CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR
NONYE
WEDDING DAY

I couldn't believe that after everything we had passed through, we were finally getting wedded. I had lost all hope at some point thinking that no one would come to our rescue. I was seated in the room where the makeup artist was working on my face. I had told her that i wanted something mild but she eyed me and said it was my wedding day and not some hangout. My phone rang, I answered immediately placing it on speaker so as to not interrupt the work going on, on my face.

"Babe" Jamil's voice rang out cheerfully from the other end.

"Bill Gate the second. How are you?" I smiled.

"I'm fine love. Hope you slept well?" He asked.

"Slept well gini (what?) How will i sleep well when we stayed up late last night talking on the phone?" I hissed subtly.

"Sorry babe. I will make it up to you when we travel for our honeymoon. I will pamper you silly" he said. I smiled sheepishly.

"Aaaaw i can't wait my love." I giggled. The joy of leaving Nigeria for the first time in my life swelled inside me.

"We leave in five days after our wedding, everything is set. Your Visa is ready and i have gotten the flight tickets too" he replied.

"Wow that's good. What are you up to babe?" I asked.

"We are on our way going to the church now" he said. I widened my eyes in surprise. They were on their way going to the church while i hadn't finished dressing up yet. I had finished wearing my wedding gown actually and my hair had been fixed already. Just the makeup and my shoes.

"Oh okay. The makeup artist is still working on my face" I replied gesturing to Bola the makeup artist to hasten up.

"You are finally getting a makeup on your face? I can't wait to see you" he giggled.

"It's my wedding day. I need to look pretty" I chuckled.

"You are pretty even without a makeover. You are my attraction and i love you with all my height. I would have said heart but my height is longer." he said. I let out a laugh.

"All these Edo people sha" I said.

"Yes i know. Edo men are cute" he chuckled.

"Keep feeling yourself." I laughed before speaking up again "You are distracting me husband. If you want me to join you in church and on time, you need to let me concentrate" I answered.

"Okay wifey. See you soon and don't say no to going with the police men i sent" he said. I rolled my eyes.

"Yes i will go with the police men" i answered.

"Bye then" he ended the call.

"Sister this your honey moon go loud. E go choke some people. Who dey zuzu?" My sister said. I had totally forgotten she was in the room.

"Onye Ara (mad person)" I hissed.

"Where una dey see all these love abeg? I go love ooo" Bola said. I only shook my head at the both of them.

"Ndi Ara( mad people)" I said and we all laughed heartily.

The drive to the church lasted about ten minutes and some seconds. The church was full when we got there. Police men stood at every corner and i couldn't help but worry. I didn't want to scare people away or give them the impression that something was wrong. I walked into the church with my sister following behind. Jamil was already standing at the altar waiting for me. We joined him and my sister together with Jamil's best man walked back to sit at the front pew. The pastor walked to us with a younger man bearing the rings on a tray. Jamil winked at me and i eyed him before looking away.

"Marriage to some is a bed of roses while to another set of people, it is not. It all depends on how you handle your imperfections" the pastor said when he was standing beside us. "Mr Jamil Onose Bello do you take miss Nonyelum Cherish Dike to be your lawfully wedded wife? To love and to cherish, In sickness and in health, for richer for poorer Until death do you part" he asked Jamil shifting the microphone to his mouth.

"Yes i do and will always do" Jamil replied immediately. People cooed at his response and reaction. The pastor turned to me.

"Miss Nonyelum Cherish Dike do you take Mr Jamil Onose Bello to be your lawfully wedded husband? To love and to cherish, In sickness and in health, for richer for poorer until death do you part?" He asked bringing the microphone close to my mouth. I looked at my mother and she was shedding tears. My eyes burned as my own tears gathered. I was sure Mama couldn't believe that her daughter was getting married after all the troubles we went through.

"Yes i do." I replied. The pastor took a ring from the plate and gave it to Jamil and said "you will repeat after me and mention your name where necessary" Jamil nodded.

"I call upon you all present to witness as i Jamil Onose Bello take thee Nonyelum Cherish Dike as my lawfully wedded wife, to love and to cherish. To honor and protect. For better for worst until death do us part" Jamil said out loud pushing the ring to my ring finger. The pastor turned to me and even without saying anything, i already knew what to do.

"I call upon you all present to witness as i Nonyelum Cherish Dike take thee Jamil Onose Bello as my lawfully wedded husband. Whom i will continue to love and Cherish in all circumstances. Whom i will continue to respect even in the worst moment until death do us part" I repeated after the pastor and pushed the ring to Jamil's ring finger wondering why my own vow was different from that of Jamil's.

"Before i proceed. Is there anyone that is against this union or has something to say please come forward and speak or forever hold your peace" the pastor said. I held my breath. What if Jamil's uncle appeared from no where and tried to stop the wedding?. I looked at Jamil and he gave me a reassuring smile. "In the absence of that and with the power bestowed upon me, I declare the both of you Husband and Wife" the pastor concluded and everyone clapped.

We sat down for the sermon and after a few more hours, the service was over. We all filed out to take pictures and after which the reception commenced. I changed into a red strapless gown with a slit running from my feet up to my thigh while Jamil never changed. Everybody ate to their satisfaction and i could even see my sister from the corner of my eyes acting all lovey dovey with the best man. I rolled my eyes. That girl was a gbaza queen.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE
JAMIL
TWO DAYS TO THE WEDDING

We were on our way to the address sent to me the previous day. I know i was told not to involve the police but i had to anyway. They had fixed a tracking device on the button of my shirt and a listening device too. They dropped me off miles away from the address and i took a taxi there. When i got to the address, it was an uncompleted building that was fenced with a zinc. I stood outside contemplating if i should go in or stay outside. My phone beeped signifying an arrival of a text message. I opened it and the content of the text said i should go in. I went in and a young man was waiting for me.

"Follow me" he said and i obeyed. We walked to the back of the building and there my uncle sat on a block. He grinned the moment he saw me.

"Who do we have here?" He asked.

"You have me now. Let my wife go" I said.

"You don't command me boy" he thundered bringing out a gun from a bag i hadn't noticed earlier.

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

"Isn't it obvious? I want to kill you" he replied sarcastically.

"What did i even do to you Uncle Gerald? Why are you doing this to me?" I asked.

"Since I'm going to kill you anyways. I might just tell you everything from how your grandparents are the ones responsible for the man I have become today" he replied then turned to the young man that brought me in earlier "tie his hands and leave us" he said. The man nodded and tied my hands behind my back before leaving. "You might as well sit down because the story is a long one" he said calmly to me. I hurriedly sat down on a pile of blocks a few feet away from him. I hoped the police would arrive before he shot me.

"After your grand father willed everything to my younger brother your father. I wasn't happy and your father always seized any opportunity he got to rub it all in my face. One day i overheard your grandparents talking about a very important issue. I heard the man i had grown to see as a father say that he didn't will anything to me because i was the adopted son. I didn't understand at first but when i eavesdropped more, i learnt that they were childless for sometime after they got married and since they were rich, they decided to adopt a son. A certain woman gave birth to a set of twins and was willing to sell one because she didn't have what it would take to train the both of them. Your grandparents bought one child from her and paid her the sum of two million naira" he stopped for sometime staring intently at his wristwatch. I still hadn't figured where the story was headed but then something clicked in my mind.

"The person in prison is not your doppelganger?" I asked.

"You have always been a smart boy. He is my twin and not any doppelganger" he gave me a sinister wink.

"How does that concern my parents and me?" I asked.

"Calm down boy, I'm not done with the story yet" he answered. "After i was adopted, two years later they had their own son which was your father. They preferred him over me. Favoured him over me always. When i found out i was adopted, i went out in search of my biological parents. It was very difficult but i found them at last. My biological father had died from heart attack, he was never a good father anyways. The money they made from selling me, he spent it on gambling and drinking thereby plunging the family into abject poverty again. I met my brother, he was living a life of a criminal. He smoked and did all manner of criminal activity just to survive." He checked his wrist watch again.

"Are you expecting someone?" I asked. It was none of my business but i just wanted to buy more time for the police.

"It wasn't hard for me to instigate hatred in the heart of my twin against my foster brother and together we planned your parents death" he ignored my question. "The day i got arrested, he was waiting for me on the road. We got swapped and he went to prison instead of me because i wasn't yet done with you. You are probably thinking of how i carried out the plan meticulously. I have a handful of police men working for me and i also know you involved them. You think they would come to save you? You know nothing boy" he laughed sarcastically. My heart started beating in fear. I hoped he wasn't saying the truth.

"You think I'm a fool boy. I know everything going on in the police station. Right from when you laid a complain about me having a doppelganger, they told me." He bragged.

"How do you plan on achieving this? Your brother won't leave prison" I asked still praying that he lied about the police not coming to rescue me.

"You are still underestimating me boy" he clicked his tongue. "Honey please come" he said. I wondered who he was referring to until someone walked out from the building and i got the greatest shock of my life.

"Jesus Aunty Maria" I yelled "aren't you supposed to be dead? Jesus Christ am i dreaming?" I started sweating all of a sudden.

"I'm not dead boy, I was never dead. It's all part of the plan" she laughed walking towards her husband.

"Listen to me boy, you are still a kid. I lied to you about my wife's death so that you would believe that my so called daughter Isabella didn't have a mother she would stay with and would want to live with you. I knew you would agree if you thought my wife was dead" he winked. I couldn't handle everything i heard. I held my banging head in my hand and bent my head.

"Drink this" he said. I looked up and my Uncle was thrusting a bottle of something i didn't know to me.

"What is that?" I asked.

"Poison. You thought i was going to shoot you? I'm always ahead of you in the game" he chuckled. I motioned to him that my hands were tied. He opened the bottle and brought it up to my mouth.

"Everybody freeze. Hands up in the air" someone said. I turned my head sharply and a group of uniformed men were standing behind me. I didn't know any of them but i didn't even care as long as they would save me.

"Who are you?" My uncle asked.

"We are from the Lagos State division. Someone called us over" one of them replied then turned to me. "Mr Ahbulimen inspector Damian contacted us a few days back. He said some of the police men in the Umuahia division are working for your uncle, the reason we came in to save the situation" he explained.

"Thank you thank you" they untied my hands and handcuffed my uncle and his wife. We all walked out of the building.

"We need to find my wife" I said the moment we were out.

"She is fine. She has been saved" he replied with a smile. I looked at my uncle and his wife, they had a defeated look on their faces.

CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
NONYE
THREE DAYS TO THE WEDDING

I had spent two days with the crazy couple but it felt like two years already. They hadn't been treating me like a hostage though, infact they fed me morning, Afternoon and Night. I had refused eating at first but i figured if i was going to escape, i needed food to give me strength. I hadn't left the room since i was brought in, not like they didn't want me to. They often left the door unlocked and said i could go to the living room if i wanted to but i never left anyways. The door to the room opened and Maria came inside.

"Follow me" she said leaving the room while i sluggishly followed behind. When we got to the living room, her husband was seated already. He pointed at the space beside him and told me to sit. I eyed him skeptically before sitting.

"I told you that i would let you contact Jamil when the time is right" he said. I kept mute and when he saw i wasn't going to reply, he continued. "We are going to call him now. Tell him that an address will be sent to him once you drop the call and he is expected to come to the address alone. He shouldn't involve the police because if he does, he won't like what will happen. Did you hear everything i said?" He asked. I only hissed and looked away. "I will take that as a yes then" he added. He dailed a number on his phone and gave it to me. I snatched the phone from him and placed it on my ear. After a few seconds, Jamil's voice rang out from the other side.

"Babe it's me" i said.

"Oh my God Babe is that you?" He asked. I heard a shuffling sound in the background and concluded that he must have stood up upon hearing my voice.

"Yes it's me" I said.

"Where are you? How are you? Who abducted you? You are calling with a private number" He asked all at once.

"Babe listen to me. Your Uncle abducted me and he is planning to kill you. Please don't go to any address he texts to you after now" I said. Jamil's uncle landed a very dangerous slap across my cheek and snatched the phone from my hand. I winced in pain.

"Listen to me boy, if you want to see your wife alive, come to the address i will text to you now. Don't involve the police, if you do i will kill your wife before killing you. Be there tomorrow by 5pm" he said before ending the call. He stared at me with a bloodshot eyes.

"Because i said i didn't want to abuse you in anyway, you think you can flout my orders? Don't make me change my mind." He warned before leaving the sitting room.

"Go back to your room" Maria growled. I shrugged before entering the room. I landed heavily on the bed as tears gathered in my eyes. I wondered how my mother was taking the news. She must have cried herself to sleep since the day i got missing. Then my sister, I wondered how she was feeling too. I stood up and wiped my tears concluding to escape in one way or another. I went back to the living room and fortunately for me none of them was in the living room. I quietly walked towards the door and turned the doorknob, surprisingly, it gave way. I gently closed the door after i had stepped out. I heard noises from outside the compound and i longed for freedom the more. When I stepped fully away from the door, i noticed the house was a bungalow. It was the only building in the compound and it had a very high fence which was wired. I ran noiselessly to the gate and tried to open it. It was padlocked with a very big key. I fell down helplessly on the ground and cried my eyes out. I heard a laughter behind me and turned to see Maria.

"You think you can escape? We left the doors open because we felt you would like to come out for fresh air sometimes. You see this gate? It's always locked, you can't escape. When you are done crying, come in and have your lunch" she said all at once before walking back to the house.

Dedicated to Oyinella
Happy Birthday boo. Lines will continue to fall in pleasant places for you. Live long and Prosper.

CHAPTER THIRTY

JAMIL

I couldn't even describe how i felt at that moment after hearing that my attraction had been abducted. I was shocked, angry, sad, frustrated, depressed, furious, annoyed all at once. I walked tro and fro in my living room while my in-laws were seated at a corner crying their eyes out. I offered to get her a bodyguard but she refused. That girl was really stubborn and for the first time in my life, i regretted loving stubborn ladies. I knew her disappearance had something to do with my Uncle. I felt downcast and useless. I couldn't even protect her. Someone rang the doorbell and i rushed to get the door. There were two police men standing outside and i let them in. My in-laws rushed to them immediately asking if they had found their daughter.

"Calm down please. We are doing our best" one of the officers said.

"Did you say calm down? My daughter is missing and you are saying i should calm down?" My mother in-law yelled.

"Mom please calm down" I said to her and she went to sit down.

"Sir have they contacted you yet to ask for ransom or anything?" He asked.

"No they haven't. I wish they will call. I can give them any amount they want as long as they will release my wife" I said in all sincerity.

"Once they contact you, do well to inform us" he said again. I nodded and sighed all at once.

"I just wish I'm dreaming" I muttered.

"Is there anyone you are suspecting?" The officer spoke up.

"Yes my uncle" I replied sharply.

"But your uncle is in prison sir" he replied. I felt like punching the stupidity out of him. Was he thinking i was going crazy?.

"Listen to me. The person in your custody is an imposter. I don't know what is happening but i know that he is not my uncle. My uncle isn't that chubby and he doesn't have a tattoo on his arm" I sneered.

"Okay sir we will investigate it together with the abduction case. Is there any other person you are suspecting?" He asked.

"No. It's only my uncle and my instincts never fails me" I answered.

"Okay sir. We will be on our way now" he said. I only nodded and walked them to the door.

Calm down lovelies. We have about four more chapters to go. Thank you cool

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
NONYE
FIVE DAYS TO THE WEDDING

I was going to pick up my wedding gown with my sister. Ever since Jamil's observation of his uncle having a doppelganger, we had been careful. He had reported to the authorities and they said they wouldn't do anything until we provided evidence. Not like i believed the man had a doppelganger or something, I just didn't want to get Jamil angry. It would make him look like he was going crazy if no one believed him. Mama bade us farewell as i and my sister got into the cab i had ordered. Jamil had suggested getting me a bodyguard to follow me everytime i went out but i declined. The car zoomed off and i got busy with my phone. I was so engrossed in my phone that i didn't notice when the car came to a halt. Not until i heard a gunshot and my heart skipped. I looked through the window and saw three hefty men wearing masks and gun in their hands walking towards our car.

"Sister they are coming towards us" Chimdiya panicked. I fearfully dailed Jamil's number and he picked almost immediately.

"Babe we are being attacked by gunmen" that was the only thing i said before the door to my side of the car got opened and i was dragged out of the cab. My phone fell on the ground and one of them smashed it with his boot.

"Sister" Chimdiya yelled. "Don't take my sister please she has a wedding on Saturday" she cried. I strained my eyes to look at the driver wondering why he was quiet. One of the gunmen held a gun to his head daring him to say a word. They ignored my sister's plea and dragged me to their car. My sister rushed out of the cab and attempted to follow us. One of them shot at her intentionally missing.

"I will make sure the next bullet hits you if you follow us again" he sneered before shoving me into the backseat of the car. I looked back and saw my sister sprawled on the ground crying. My eyes burned as my own tears gathered.

"Save your tears, you will need it later" the one sitting by my right side said placing a handkerchief over my nose and i became unconscious.

I woke up in a furnished room. I wondered what i was doing in a strange room when i remembered the abduction that happened earlier in the day. I quickly sat up on the bed and scanned the room. I thought abductors kept their victims in an uncompleted building?. I was about calling for help when an elderly woman entered the room.

"Oh you are awake" she smiled.

"Who are you and where am i?" I asked hoping she would say i was saved from the gunmen.

"My name is Maria and you are still abducted" she laughed sarcastically.

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

"We don't have any problem with you. It's your husband we want" someone said entering the room.

"I will take it from here honey" he said briefly kissing the woman before he turned to look at me.

"You?" I asked in shock.

"Yes it's me in flesh and blood" he grinned.

"Are you not supposed to be in prison?" I asked.

"I heard Jamil already figured there was a foul play. It's a pity you didn't believe him" he laughed.

"You truly have a doppelganger?" I asked feeling bad for not believing Jamil.

"I don't owe you any explanation. When the time is right, i will let you contact Jamil. You will be the bait" he winked at me.

"Please let me go. I have a wedding on Saturday" I cried.

"Oh no dear. It's better i kill Jamil now before the wedding. I wouldn't want to make you a widow" he replied.

"You want to kill my husband? What did he ever do to you?" I yelled.

"Nothing. I just want to kill him so that i can inherit the company" he replied casually like it was a good thing to do.

"You think you will go free after killing him? You must be insane" I scoffed.

"You really must be underestimating me. By now you should know that i have my ways. I have everything planned out" he chuckled. I flew out of the bed and launched towards him.

"Don't you dare touch my husband. Leave us alone" I said grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. He flung me away and i fell back on the bed.

"She is crazy now isn't she?" He asked his wife and they shared a long kiss.

"You are the crazy ones here and you disgust me" I screamed.

"See you later crazy woman" they hissed leaving the room. I let out a loud wail the moment they left.

CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

JAMIL

I was on my way to pick up my wedding suit from the boutique. The wedding preparations kicked off a few days after the traditional marriage which took place some weeks ago. I had told them to order the suit from Thailand, both the pair my best man was going to wear. I couldn't still believe i would become a married man in a couple of weeks. I parked my car in front of "Lexon" Empire and stepped down. I dialed a number on my phone and the person at the other end assured me he was close to Lexon Empire too. I put my phone into my pocket and leaned on my car. I felt someone was watching me. I looked around and didn't find anything unusual, I concluded i was just been paranoid. The feeling came back again, worst than before. I looked around again and just inside a car parked across the building at the other side of the road was a young man taking pictures of me. I raised my brows and stared intently at him. He continued taking pictures without noticing or caring about my stares. I started walking towards the car. I crossed the road and was a few feets away from the car when suddenly the car drove off but not before i got a glimpse of another person sitting at the passenger side, it was my Uncle. I would always recognize him even if i got just a glimpse of him. Then he smirked at me before they drove away. I could swear i saw my Uncle seated in that car smirking at me. I suddenly felt giddy and staggered backwards. Was he not supposed to be in prison? I held my head as it started aching all of a sudden.

"Jamil" someone called from behind. I turned around and it was the person i was waiting for.

"Stan. You have arrived" I said woozily.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"Yea I'm fine bro. Let's go check out the suits" I nodded walking towards the building while he followed behind. After we were done checking the suits, I drove home straight after calling Stephanie and telling her that i wouldn't be returning to the office. When i got home, my attraction was sitting in the living room watching TV. I sighed and fell heavily on the sofa beside her.

"Babe you are back early" she said muting the TV.

"I don't even know If I'm going nuts babe" I replied.

"How? What do you mean?" She asked.

"I saw my Uncle today" I whispered.

"Your Uncle? Are you sure? Is he not supposed to be in prison?" She asked.

"I know what i saw. He even smirked at me or do you think I'm seeing things?" I said.

"Okay calm down. There is only one way to find out. Let's go to the police station to pay your Uncle a visit" she replied. I looked at her and smiled. How come i didn't think about that. I grabbed my car keys immediately and stood up.

"Let's go" I said. She looked at me like i was not serious.

"Now? Babe i don't mean now. You need to eat and freshen up first" she said holding my hand.

"I need to do this now for my own sanity. Let's go please" I said dragging her up. She nodded before joining me and together, we left the house.

When we got to the police station. The prison warden told us to sit while he went in to bring my Uncle. A few seconds later, he came out with my Uncle who was handcuffed. I looked at him and for someone in prison, he had gained weight. He sat down across from us and the warden shifted away from us to give us some privacy.

"So have you come to gloat?" He scoffed.

"I just wanted to make sure you are still here" I shrugged. He let out a throaty laugh before leaning forward then whispered.

"You won't even know what hit you by the time we are done with you" he grinned.

"You are still issuing out a threat while you are still here? Unbelievable" I hissed.

"It's not a threat boy, it's a promise" he stood up and went towards the warden who led him back to the prison. We walked in silence until we got to the car.

"You see? Your Uncle is still there. You don't have anything to worry about. Probably you are stressed from work and the wedding preparations too" my attraction spoke up.

"No. I don't think that was my Uncle back there" I replied letting out a sigh.

"Come on babe. You and i saw him together. What are you saying?" She asked.

"I know my Uncle very well. The person we saw in there is chubbier than my Uncle. When he stood up to leave, his arm, I saw a tattoo on his arm. My Uncle doesn't have a tattoo plus he doesn't have the birthmark on my Uncle's cheek" I replied tiredly feeling giddy again.

"What are you trying to say?" She asked.

"I think we arrested a doppelganger" I said as the realization dawned on me.

No we don't have high bride price. Even with all the things written on the list. The groom pays whatsoever he has. Nobody will question or kill him. The list can be negotiated, it's not stamped.

Who is this Maria? I'm having a feeling that her husband is Jamil's uncle but if he is the one, who then did they arrest? Damsel this suspense is too much.

Nonye please don't mind all these village people. That was what they did during my sister's time. Our in-laws negotiated until they ended up paying just half of the things written on the list.
