CHAPTER FIFTEEN
JAMIL

I yawned as i typed in some documents on my laptop. It was almost 1pm and i was getting hungry. I eyed the food Bella had packed and gave out a little hiss. I didn't want to eat that. I needed real food. My Uncle entered my office breaking my thoughts.

"Good Afternoon Uncle Gerald" I greeted with a smile.

"Afternoon son" how are you doing? He sat down and made himself comfortable.

"I'm fine. What brings you here today?" I asked. I knew my Uncle well enough. He only came to the Office whenever he had something he wanted to discuss with me.

"Bella called me. She complained that you have not been eating at home. Why?" He asked.

"I have not been hungry. These days i eat out" I shrugged.

"Look at this boy. You have been eating out? You don't even take instructions. Do you want to die?" He shrieked.

"If i eat out for a few days, i won't die. Please stop exaggerating" I chuckled.

"Imagine. He is even speaking grammar for me. Listen son. I won't forgive myself if you die because of something we could have avoided. Please my son, eat at home. Your life is important" he pleaded.

"I told Bella i was going to eat dinner. She shouldn't have disturbed you" I sighed.

"Let her disturb me ooo, did you hear what i said? Let her disturb me. It's my son we are talking about here" he eyed me.

"Don't worry, I will be eating at home from tonight" I smiled at him.

"Better do that" he replied and then bent closer to the table "Have you noticed any changes in your body?" He asked.

"No. As a matter of fact, I have not coughed for some days now and my hands no longer shake" I drummed my hand happily on the table.

"Thank God. You see? It's because you were taking your drugs as you should. When they tell children of nowadays something, they won't hear" he hissed.

"Uncle calm down" I chuckled.

"Have you written your will yet?" He asked.

"No. But i will call Barrister Alex later" I nodded.

"No don't call him. Don't write your will yet. I have a strong feeling that you are going to live. What you just told me is a sign that you are healing" he said.

"You think so? I don't want to raise my hopes high" I replied.

"I think so" he reassured me.

"Okay sir. Thank you" I smiled.

"You welcome son. I will be on my way now. Make sure you eat at home" he waved heading to the door. I only nodded and thought about what he said. What if it was true? What if it meant i was healing and wouldn't die again? I sighed and called Stephanie. She entered my office a few seconds after.

"Sir you called" she asked.

"Yes. Did you contact the agent concerning Mrs Abayomi's apartment?" I asked.

"Yes sir i called him. He sent me pictures of an apartment at Allen Avenue. I have printed the pictures, let me get them" she said before leaving. Stephanie had been working for me since i took over the company. She was efficient and i thanked God everyday because i hated working with incompetent fools. She re-entered my office and dropped a few files on my table. I picked them up and nodded after i had gone through.

"How many bedrooms?" I asked.

"Two bedroom flat. Very close to the office. Constant Electricity/water supply. Tarred road and the compound is interlocked. Plus there are only three people living in the compound including the vacant flat" she explained.

"That's good. How much?" I asked.

"Three hundred and fifty thousand naira" she replied packing the files.

"We will take it but you will have to take a look at the house yourself first" I nodded.

"Okay sir" she replied.

"And tell Him to look around for three bedroom bungalow. Not for rent. I want to buy. Somewhere that will only take twenty minutes from my house." I told her.

"You want to buy a house?" She raised her brows.

"Yes. For someone" I replied. She nodded before she left. I left the office too to have lunch at the company canteen. I would make it up to Bella in the night.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN
JAMIL

I woke up energized that particular morning without even knowing the reason. I felt a new surge of energy waltz through my body. I wore my suit and searched around for the packet of handkerchief i used. I took one out of it and tucked it in my suit pocket. I nodded at my self in the mirror before picking up my briefcase then something hit me. I had not coughed for the past few days and my hands no longer shook. I covered my mouth as my eyes popped out in realization. Did it mean i was healing? Did it mean my treatment was working? Did it mean i would survive? I blinked furiously as tears blinded me. I didn't want to die anymore, i had grown cold feet towards dying. I wiped my tears and walked out. When i got to the living room, Bella was making breakfast as usual. I wasn't hungry so i decided to skip breakfast. She came out from the kitchen carrying a plate of food which was placed on a tray.

"Good morning Bro" she greeted as soon as she saw me.

"Morning Bella" I scratched my head. I didn't know how i was going to skip breakfast without getting her angry.

"I made salad with vegetables" she said dropping the tray on the dining table.

"I'm not hungry Bella. My stomach is full" I muttered.

"Full with what? You haven't been eating my meals for some days now Jamil. Did i do something bad? I know you don't like your new menu but it's not my fault. I'm only following the doctor's instruction" she said sadly. I felt guilty for making her sad.

"You didn't do anything Bella. I'm not just hungry" I looked at her, she still had that sad look in her eyes. "Okay i will eat dinner, I promise" I said.

"I will pack it up for you. Eat it in the afternoon" she said going into the kitchen. I didn't want to argue, i just sighed. I watched her pack the food in a flask and then finally put it in a lunch bag and then handed it to me.

"Thank you" I said with a nod collecting the bag from her.

"Make sure you eat it" she said

"I will. Take care" I smiled at her before leaving for work. I connected the car Bluetooth speaker to my phone and sang along to Ckay's love Nwantiti. I couldn't even remember the last time i listened to music while on my way to work. When i drove into the company premises, everybody ran around trying to get busy. I decided to have a meeting with all my employees as soon as i get to my office. Stephanie was on her desk when i got to my office. She stood up the moment she saw me.

"Good morning sir" she collected the briefcase and the lunch bag from me.

"Good morning Steph. How are you?" I entered my office while she followed behind.

"I'm fine sir" she replied. I nodded and took the briefcase and lunch bag from her, placing them on the table.

"I want to have a meeting with everyone in the next 30 minutes" I told her.

"Sir?" She said.

"I said i want to have a meeting with all the staff of Javelin Builders. Gather everyone. From the lowest to the highest position" I explained.

"Okay sir" she nodded.

"When we are done, you can read out my schedules for the day" I removed my suit and draped it on the hand of my swivel chair.

"Yes sir" she left immediately. I opened my briefcase and brought out my drugs. I popped three of each container in my mouth and swallowed. Thirty minutes later, Stephanie entered my office to tell me that everybody was waiting for me at the conference Hall. I removed my suit from the hand of the swivel chair and wore it. I followed Stephanie to the conference Hall and there were about Thirty people seated quietly. I wondered when we hired all of them. It didn't matter to me though, as long as they did their work. I climbed the podium and sat on a chair that was already placed there.

"Good Morning everyone" I greeted.

"Good Morning sir" everybody chorused.

"I hope you all slept well?" I asked again. Different replies flew in from different angles. When the noise died down, i continued. "I know you all will be wondering why i called for a meeting" I said. I rarely called for meetings. Unless i wanted to fire an incompetent fellow. "I have an important announcement to make. By Month end, your salaries will be doubled. Whatever you are earning now, you will get a double of it from now onwards" I smiled.

"Thank you sir. God bless you sir" everybody chorused.

"You all work so hard to make sure this company grows. There wouldn't be Javelin without you all. Thank you" I had learnt to say thank you and appreciate people. Our lives weren't even guaranteed. We might drop dead anytime.

"Thank you sir" the emotional ones amongst them were already shedding tears.

"If you know you are married, can you stand up please?" I said. About ten persons stood up. "You all have kids?" I asked again and they all answered in affirmative. "Send in your children's names to the financial secretary. The company will place them on a full scholarship. Any university of their choice" I announced.

"Oh my God. Thank you sir. thank you sir. God bless you. You shall never know a better yesterday" they all chorused. I nodded at them and then turned to the financial secretary.

"Miss Blessing, make sure this rule is effective as from the end of this month" I said to her.

"Okay sir" she replied.

"Alright. Meeting is over. You can go back to your various duty posts" I stood up and left. I needed to spend my money. I had so much money and wouldn't want to be stingy with it when i would soon die.

"Sir" Stephanie called behind me.

"Yes Stephanie?" I answered entering the office.

"God bless you. Some of us actually needed the increment. Especially Mrs Abayomi. Things have been tough for her and the children ever since her husband died. They even stay in an unhealthy environment" she said sniffing, entering the office too.

"Mrs Abayomi? As in the janitor?" I asked to be sure. I sat down and relaxed my back on the chair.

"Yes sir" she nodded.

"I hope her children are among those that received scholarship?" I asked again.

"Yes sir" she still nodded.

"How much do janitors earn?" I twirled round the chair.

"Twenty Thousand Naira sir" I almost screamed.

"Twenty what? Who designed such payment slip?" I asked.

"The HR sir"

"Thank God i have doubled everybody's salary and look for a better apartment for Mrs Abayomi and her children please" I instructed. I didn't know people were suffering. I had never suffered in my life, I didn't know what it was like to suffer. I wiped the tear that had found its way down my cheek.

"Thank you sir" She said with a smile.

"What are my schedules for today?" I asked.

"Nothing much sir. You have a meeting with the C.E.O of Zentab conglomerate by 11am and your uncle requested to have a meeting with you by 1pm. Mr Kalu will be coming for his gravels today by 4pm and that's all" she read out.

"Okay then. Thank you" I smiled opening my laptop. As soon as Stephanie left, I took my phone and dialed my attraction's number. In the spur of the moment, her voice would add to the happiness i felt already. She picked on the second ring.

"Edo man" her voice rang cheerfully from the other end.

"How are you doing? I hope I'm not disturbing you?" I asked. I wouldn't want to put her into trouble.

"Not really. I'm at the counter today. No too much work. Did you eat breakfast before leaving for work?" She asked.

"No i didn't. Bella made something but i wasn't hungry so i skipped breakfast but she packed it up for me though as lunch" I explained.

"Who is Bella?" She asked. I rolled my eyes. All the things i said, that was the only one she picked." Women."

"Bella is my cousin. She lives with me and helps around the kitchen" I replied.

"Okay. I bet you are wearing suit as usual. This Edo Man sha" I heard her hiss.

"What am i supposed to wear to work? Ripped jeans?" I chuckled.

"Jeans is okay. It must not be ripped. On Wednesdays and Fridays, you can dress casual by wearing jeans and T-shirt. You can even spice it up by adding sneakers. Corporate attire makes you look too serious" she said sounding like she was admonishing her younger brother.

"Yes Ma" I replied. "Have you thought about what we discussed?" I added. It was two days already since we talked about it. She should have an answer for me.

"Yes i was going to call you later. My mother agreed after much persuasion" she said happily.

"That's good" I smiled gleefully. "Alright then. Talk to you later"

"Take care" she replied before i ended the call. I called Stephanie and she entered my office almost immediately.

"Sir you sent for me?" She asked.

"Yes. I need you to contact Mr Lawal from Gucci clothings, i need to restock my wardrobe. Call Chegez too, i need a touch of Luis Vutton and don't forget Dior and Versace. And yes, Puma shoes and Air max. Please do that now. I will call Bella and tell her to receive them once they arrive. They should deliver as many as they can." I said all at once.

"Okay sir" she replied. I could see questions in her eyes but she left nonetheless. The Queen said i shouldn't always be on corporate. Whatever the Queen wanted, she got always.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
NONYE

I was in the kitchen, packing up. We had already closed for the day and i was packing my own share of food in a take home plate. Joshua strutted into the kitchen and scanned everywhere briefly until his eyes landed on me.

"Nonye. Another fine man is looking for you" He said. Joshua was the assistant manager and the only male in our midst.

"Again?" Rachael spoke up after swallowing a lump of Eba.

"Nonye this one fine fine men just dey find you today, wetin dey occur na?" Esther asked from where she stood.

"So my friends can't visit here again?" I asked rolling my eyes. You all remember Ikem right? The one that just came back from Ghana? Yes, he dropped by the eatery earlier in the day. He said he came to see me and to know where i worked. While leaving, he squeezed a few notes in my hand and said we would talk when i get back from work.

"That's not what we are saying ooo. They are just too Handsome" Rachael replied going to wash her hand in the sink

"Word of advice though, i prefer this one that came now to the one that came in the morning" Joshua said.

"They are both my friends Joshua, you don't need to have preferences" i rolled my eyes.

"It's like i will go and see this one so that i can call result" Rachael said wiping her wet hand on a piece of cloth.

"You have seen him ooo Rachael" I half screamed. My colleagues were mad. If i didn't stop Rachael she was actually going to look at Jamil. "He is the guy i was talking to that night, a few nights ago" I added. I already knew it was Jamil because he called a few hours ago and said he would pick me up after work.

"You mean that Hunk? I prefer him too abeg. He is really cute" she smiled.

"Una goodnight. I'm going. See you tomorrow" I said already heading out. I didn't see Jamil in the eatery so i stepped out and searched around for his car. I was about dialing his number when he got down from a huge white car. It was different from the one i had been seeing him with. I looked closely and saw "Range Rover" written on it. I made a mental note to ask my sister how much it would cost.

"You are done" He said letting out a smile. I shifted my gaze to him and as usual, he was wearing a suit. I rolled my eyes, that guy and suit were just like Akara and Bread.

"Good evening" I greeted walking towards him.

"Evening. How was work today?" He asked.

"Stressful but fine. How was yours?" I asked.

"It was fine." He opened the door for me and i entered the car. No wait, I didn't enter the car, I climbed in. The car was big that i had to climb in. I shut the door and fastened my seatbelt.

"So i was thinking about something today while i was at the office" he spoke up.

"What's that" I asked.

"I want to get an apartment in town for you and your family" he said. I stared at him for some minutes before he spoke again. "I'm not trying to intrude in your life or anything. You need a well deserving job and you can't get it in this place. There are better opportunities in the main Town than here" he concluded with a sigh. I was confused. I couldn't even say anything. "Say something please" he said glancing briefly at me before taking his gaze back to the road.

"Why do you want to help me? What do you want in return?" I asked.

"I don't want anything from you. I just want to help. I made a decision to help anybody i can and in any way i can" he said with a nod.

"I don't know. My mother will not agree to this" I shrugged.

"Just look for a way to convince her. You need to leave this place" I only nodded at him. We drove in silence until we got to my house. I unstrapped my seatbelt and let out a sigh.

"Thank you for dropping me off" I said.

"It's nothing. Just think about what i told you" he said.

"I Will. Goodnight" I was about to open the door when he stopped me.

"I have not heard you talk about your father before. Does he live with you guys?" He asked.

"Naaaaah he died a few years back. It's just I, my mother and my younger sister" I replied.

"Ouch. I'm sorry about that. You know I'm an orphan. My parents died in an accident and I'm the only child" he said. I felt pity for him. At least i had Mama and Chimdiya but he had no one.

"I'm sorry" I said. He only chuckled and waved it off.

"Goodnight. Sweet dreams" he said.

"Yes. Call me once you are home" I nodded stepping down from the car. I waved at him before entering the compound. Ikem was sitting outside, just in front of their flat when i stepped in. I wondered why he was outside because there was light and everybody was inside the house.

"Hey. You are back" He said when he saw me.

"Why are you outside?" I asked.

"I don't feel like staying inside the house. How was work?"

"Work was fine" I replied heading to our flat. He called me back and i turned to him.

"I want to talk to you about something" he said. I rolled my eyes. What was doing that one?

"What's that?" I asked, hands akimbo.

"I would like us to go out on a date" he said. I almost let out a hiss. When i was crushing on him and giving him greenlight, he ignored me. I hoped it wasn't because of the three thousand Naira he squeezed in my hand when he came to the eatery that was making him ask me out on a date?

"I'm busy Ikem and you know it. My work is stressful" I sneered.

"You have an off day. We can go any day you are not working" he insisted.

"Okay. Goodnight" I waved hurriedly entering inside. I was going to find a way to convince Mama so that she could let Jamil get us an apartment. I didn't even have time for Ikem. I felt nothing for him anymore and i didn't want to lead him on.

CHAPTER TWELVE

He walked straight to the waiting room as soon as he entered the hospital. He was a regular visitor there so no one questioned him. He crossed his leg as soon as he sat down while he waited for the younger man to surface.

"Good afternoon sir" the younger man greeted as soon as he entered the waiting room.

"Good afternoon" he looked at the younger man who was wearing a lab coat. "How are you?" He asked.

"I'm fine sir" he replied sitting beside the older man.

"Do you think that stuff is working? Because i don't understand why he is still alive despite all we are doing" the older man spoke up.

"It's working. It just doesn't kill immediately. It kills slowly" he replied with a chuckle.

"The doctor said he still has more months to live. That's too far. I can't wait" the older man said balling his palm in a fist.

"Let's wait until when the doctor said he will die. How is She? I hope she is doing her job well?" He asked.

"I don't even know for her. She is acting as if she has feelings for that boy" he hissed. The younger man let out a quick laugh.

"I actually like the pattern she is using. She is being careful so that when Jamil finally dies, they won't even suspect us. You know who they will point fingers at?" He grinned at the older man.

"Yea right? I think you are correct" the older replied with a nod.

"Just let her do her thing" he said.

"Okay then. If you say so" the older man shrugged.

****************
JAMIL
To say i was shocked when i got a call from my attraction (I will continue to call her my Attraction even after knowing her name. I even had her contact saved on my phone as my Attraction) in the morning is an understatement. I was more than shocked. The way we just clicked immediately after we exchanged contacts was mesmerizing. The way she spoke to me like we had been friends since ages was just amazing. When she had said she was going to take care of the bills i was actually surprised. Nigerian ladies didn't really like taking a man out not to talk of paying the bills. I drove into her street and checked my wrist watch, it was a few minutes to 5pm, I was right on time. Few minutes after, I was parked in front of her house and then i put a call across to her. She walked out of the compound a few seconds after and crossed over to where my car was parked. She had worn what i used to know as an underwear but ladies recently renamed "Biker's Short", well whatever worked for them. She was wearing a white T-shirt on the short and a slippers. She packed her natural hair into a bun. She dressed so casual that i felt i was overdressed with my suit.

"Hey Edo man" she said the moment she entered my car.

"Hey dear" I said back. "You look simple and beautiful" I said igniting the car.

"Thanks" she replied then looked at my outfit. "You really like suit don't you?" She asked.

"Where are we going to?" I asked ignoring her question.

"Just keep going straight. When you get to the end of the street, take a turn to the right, drive down a little and then stop at the first place after the hospital" she explained. I nodded and drove off. "You didn't answer my question Oga" she said. I glanced at her briefly, she didn't have any make up on, I decided to derail from the subject of discussion.

"You don't like wearing makeup?" I asked taking my gaze back to the road.

"No i don't" she replied curtly.

"Okay" I shrugged.

"Why are you always on suit?" She asked again. That girl was really stubborn.

"I'm a business man. Everything about me should be corporate" I smiled.

"Even when you are out on a date with your friend on a Saturday?" She scoffed.

"Well i just love wearing suit" I shrugged.

"If you are going to be my friend, you will have to touch your wardrobe a tiny, weeny bit" she said.

"Yes Ma'am" I answered with a nod.

I stopped in front of an empty land and turned to look at her to know if i was at the right place. "Is it here?" I asked.

"Yes. Just drive in, they have a parking space" she replied. I drove in and parked beside a black Lexus. We got down from the car and i looked around. It was an open space, about two plots of land with trees planted all around producing natural air. A wooden table and two wooden benches were kept under each tree with the table in the center. A big Caravan was at the extreme, that was where the kitchen was. Where they made everything they sold. There were many people there enjoying the serenity of the place as well.

"Wow this place is calm and cool" I said out loud. I liked how it was quiet.

"Wait till you taste their meal, you will just go crazy" she replied with a smile. She led me to an empty table and we sat across from each other. I nearly removed my suit to enjoy the natural breeze the tree provided. My attraction waved at a little girl and she ran towards us instantly.

"Aunty Nonye welcome" the little girl said.

"Zoba what do you people have?" She asked the little girl.

"We have the complete menu" she replied. My attraction turned to me and asked what i wanted to eat. That was the only opportunity I had to eat something different from what Bella had been cooking for me so i decided to grab it.

"Let me have fried rice and chicken please" I said. The little girl let out a slight chuckle. I stared at her to know what was funny before my attraction spoke up.

"This is a local place Jamil. They prepare only local dishes here like Abacha, Nkwobi, Bush meat pepper soup and native soups" she explained.

"Okay" I scratched my head. She looked at me for a while before she turned to the little girl.

"Get two plates of Nkwobi and one Hollandia yogurt and" she looked at me "what will you like to drink?" She asked. I was advised to stop taking alcohol after my test results were released but whatever, i wouldn't die if i drank alcohol for one day.

"I will take Heniekein" I smiled. The little girl nodded and ran off. "I guess you come here quite often" I told her.

"Not really. The owner of this place knows me. She is in the same C.W.O group in church with my mother" she kissed her teeth.

"Okay" I nodded. After a few minutes, the girl came with our order. I stared on as she placed them on the table. I stared curiously at what they called Nkwobi. A small wooden plate that had stirred meat full to the brim with onions sliced expertly on top. A green sliced vegetable placed on top of the meat beside the onions. I wondered how it would taste.

"You have not eaten Nkwobi before?" She asked.

"No" I shook my head.

"Well you are going to eat it today" she winked at me and my heart skipped. "Wash your hands" she pushed a basin of water to me and i hurriedly washed my hands. I took the first piece of meat and put it in my mouth and looked at her before i chewed. The feeling was heavenly. I picked another piece and chewed hurriedly before picking another piece again. "I see you like it" she chuckled.

"I love it" I simply replied and went back to chewing the meat. I uncork the drink and poured some into a glass cup. I took a sip and returned to the meat again. I put another piece in my mouth and moaned. "This is really good. Wow" I muttered which only earned me a laugh from her.

We were done eating and the same little girl had cleared our table. I had let out a belch like more than three times. My attraction stood up and said she was going to pay for what we ate. I immediately dipped my hand in my trouser pocket and retrieved some money. I gave it to her but she shook her head.

"It's my treat Jamil, don't worry i can handle it" she said before heading towards the caravan. I put the money back in my pocket. She had just won my heart completely and that stunt she pulled out there was her ticket to not pay for anything again as long as i was with her.
