Businesses and organised private-sector groups have called on commercial banks to reduce lending rates after the Central Bank of Nigeria cut its benchmark interest rate from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent.

The CBN announced the 350-basis-point reduction at the end of its 307th Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said the decision followed improvements in Nigeria’s macroeconomic conditions, including moderating inflation, improved foreign exchange conditions and stronger external reserves.

However, business leaders said the reduction would have limited impact if banks failed to pass the benefit on to borrowers through cheaper credit.

The President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Leye Kupoluyi, said the reduction was significant but stressed the need for measures that would reduce lending risks and make it easier for businesses to access funds.

He said monetary easing needed to translate into lower borrowing costs, increased investment and job creation.

Kupoluyi also warned that factors such as insecurity and political uncertainty could continue to influence banks’ willingness to lend, particularly to small and medium-sized businesses.

The President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, Femi Egbesola, also welcomed the rate cut and urged banks to reduce interest rates on existing loans.

Egbesola said banks had historically been quick to increase lending rates when the CBN raised its benchmark rate but were sometimes slow to reduce them when monetary conditions eased.

He argued that cheaper credit would help businesses expand, invest in production and improve their ability to create jobs.

However, Egbesola warned that banks could choose to invest available funds in government securities or large corporate transactions instead of lending to smaller businesses.

He therefore called on the CBN to ensure that the rate reduction was transmitted to the wider economy.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Muda Yusuf, described the rate cut as a significant shift after a prolonged period of tight monetary policy.

Yusuf said lower borrowing costs could provide relief for businesses facing high financing expenses, but stressed that the benefit would depend on the extent to which commercial banks reduce their lending rates.

The CBN, however, maintained that the decision should not be interpreted as a broad shift to monetary easing.

Cardoso described the move as a “reset and recalibration” of the policy rate to improve the effectiveness of monetary policy transmission.

He said the gap between the MPR and prevailing interbank rates had weakened the benchmark’s effectiveness, making the adjustment necessary.

The rate cut comes as Nigeria’s headline inflation continued to moderate, falling to 15.39 per cent in August from 15.43 per cent in July.

The CBN also said Nigeria’s foreign exchange position had strengthened, with external reserves reaching $55.25 billion as of September 18.

The apex bank said it would continue monitoring inflation, liquidity, foreign exchange conditions and other economic indicators as it assesses the impact of the new policy rate.

For businesses, however, the immediate expectation is that the lower benchmark rate will translate into cheaper loans and improved access to credit across the economy.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has denied a claim by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that the Federal Government provided ₦50 billion to support the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport.

Wike had made the claim while appearing on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout on Monday, saying the President Bola Tinubu-led administration supported the Oyo State Government with ₦50 billion for the airport project.

Makinde, who is also the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, rejected the claim while speaking at the Makinde/Daura 2027 Presidential Town Hall Meeting in Katsina on Tuesday.

The governor said the Federal Government did not provide the alleged funding and insisted that the airport upgrade was being financed entirely by Oyo State.

“My attention was drawn to an interview granted yesterday by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, where he said that the President gave N50 billion to Oyo State to upgrade the Ibadan Airport to international standards,” Makinde said.

“I want to say that claim is false. The President did not give Oyo State N50bn or me to upgrade the Ibadan Airport. The Ibadan Airport upgrade project is being undertaken 100 per cent with the funds of Oyo State.”

Makinde’s media aide, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, also rejected Wike’s claim, saying the state government had not received the alleged ₦50 billion from the Federal Government.

Olanrewaju said President Tinubu’s approval of the airport upgrade proposal submitted by Makinde was granted at “no cost to the Federal Government.”

He said Oyo State had therefore financed the project, including the expansion and strengthening of the runway, improvements to airfield lighting and navigation systems, apron upgrades and supporting infrastructure.

The state is also undertaking work on a new international terminal intended to increase the airport’s passenger and cargo capacity.

The dispute follows Wike’s comments about the political relationship between the Tinubu administration and the five governors who previously belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party’s G5 bloc.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and member of the G5, said during the television programme that he was not the only member of the group to have benefited from the Tinubu administration.

Makinde’s response has now turned the disagreement into a specific dispute over the funding of the Ibadan airport project.

While Wike attributed ₦50 billion in support to the Federal Government, Makinde maintains that no such funding was provided and that Oyo State is responsible for the project’s financing.

The disagreement comes as both politicians remain active in the political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

Makinde is seeking the presidency on the APM platform, while Wike remains a minister in the Tinubu administration and has been involved in political discussions surrounding the 2027 election.

Iran’s international air links are coming under increasing pressure as the United States prepares to impose sweeping sanctions on the country’s aviation sector from Wednesday, September 23.

The measures have already triggered flight cancellations and suspensions involving Iranian airlines, with Iraq preparing to halt flights operated by Iranian carriers in line with the US sanctions.

Two Iraqi government sources told AFP that Baghdad would suspend flights by Iranian airlines from Tuesday, warning that countries failing to comply with the US measures could face sanctions.

The development is part of a wider US campaign targeting Iran’s aviation industry.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iranian airlines would effectively be shut down internationally from September 23. He warned airports and companies providing fuel, landing, ticketing and other services to Iranian carriers that they could face penalties from Washington.

The United States has already sanctioned Iranian airlines and foreign companies accused of supporting Iran’s aviation sector.

The new restrictions are expected to affect the wider network supporting Iranian airlines, including fuel suppliers, ground handlers and ticketing companies.

Several Iranian airlines have already reduced international operations. Mahan Air, one of Iran’s largest carriers, suspended flights to Istanbul, Ankara and Muscat amid the mounting pressure.

Turkish Airlines, AJet and Pegasus have also removed Iran flights from their schedules, with Turkish Airlines currently showing no flights to Iran before March 2027.

However, the situation remains fluid.

Iran Air, the country’s national carrier, said on Tuesday that it had not received any official notification from authorities in Turkey, Iraq or Azerbaijan ordering it to stop flights to Istanbul, Najaf or Baku.

The US sanctions could significantly reduce Iran’s international aviation options because airlines operating its routes depend on foreign airports for services such as refuelling, maintenance and ground handling.

Analysts say the measures could also increase travel costs for Iranians and make international journeys more difficult.

Iran’s aviation industry has already faced years of restrictions and limited access to aircraft, spare parts and international services because of existing US sanctions.

The latest measures therefore come at a particularly difficult time for the sector.

While some countries, including China and Russia, have indicated opposition to unilateral US sanctions, other countries and airlines are already adjusting their operations.

The coming days are expected to determine how widely the new restrictions affect Iranian carriers and whether additional international routes will be suspended.

For now, Iran’s aviation sector is facing growing disruption as Washington moves to enforce its latest sanctions against the country’s airlines and the companies that support their international operations.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said a government led by its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would reintroduce fuel subsidy through a different approach if elected in 2027.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, made the statement during an interview with Arise TV while discussing petrol prices and the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He was asked whether the NDC’s position on fuel subsidy could affect its campaign in the North-West, where support for the return of subsidy remains an issue.

Kwankwaso responded that an NDC government would introduce what he described as subsidy “in our own way.”

He explained that one approach would involve increased government investment in refineries to boost domestic production and make petrol available to Nigerians at what he described as a reasonable price.

“No, no, no, look. We are bringing subsidy in our own way,” Kwankwaso said.

According to him, Nigeria’s growing domestic refining capacity could provide an opportunity to reduce the cost of petrol without returning entirely to the previous model of subsidising imported fuel.

He referenced the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as an example of the country’s expanding refining capacity and said more refineries could be established.

Kwankwaso also criticised the way the Tinubu administration implemented the removal of fuel subsidy shortly after taking office in May 2023.

He noted that the three major presidential candidates in the 2023 election had campaigned on the removal of subsidy, but argued that the manner and timing of the policy implementation had contributed to economic difficulties faced by Nigerians.

Fuel prices have remained a major political and economic issue ahead of the 2027 general election. Recent increases in petrol prices have renewed debate over the impact of subsidy removal, particularly on transportation, food prices and household incomes. Reuters reported that petrol prices had risen to about ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, with prices reaching about ₦1,500 in parts of northern Nigeria.

The NDC’s position comes amid competing proposals from opposition figures on how to address the cost of petrol.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has separately proposed what he calls a “production subsidy” for petroleum products refined in Nigeria. His proposal is designed to reduce the cost of locally refined petrol rather than subsidise imported fuel.

Peter Obi has also previously said he would seek to moderate petrol prices by addressing corruption in the subsidy system and improving domestic refining arrangements if elected president.

Kwankwaso’s comments therefore place domestic refining at the centre of the NDC’s proposed approach to fuel pricing ahead of the 2027 election.

The former Kano governor did not provide details of the proposed subsidy mechanism, its projected cost or the specific amount the government would commit to supporting domestic refining.

His comments, however, signal that an Obi-led administration would consider government intervention in the petroleum sector as part of efforts to make petrol more affordable to Nigerians.

Political scientist and public affairs analyst, Prof. Odion Akhaine, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu to carefully manage his relationship with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, amid growing controversy over the proposed Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Akhaine gave the warning in an interview published by Vanguard on Sunday while examining the political realignments taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political scientist said Wike’s growing involvement in the affairs of the All Progressives Congress and his efforts to mobilise politicians across party lines could create tensions within the ruling party if not properly managed.

Wike has consistently maintained that his political activities are aimed at supporting Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

However, some APC leaders and governors have expressed opposition to the Rainbow Coalition, arguing that an arrangement involving politicians from different parties could undermine APC candidates contesting governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.

The disagreement has become increasingly public, with APC governors insisting that they would support only candidates officially sponsored by the party.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, said the governors would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the APC or affecting its candidates at the 2027 elections.

Wike, however, has rejected the governors’ position, maintaining that the Rainbow Coalition is not an APC arrangement.

The FCT minister has said his objective is to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election while allowing politicians involved in the coalition to retain their individual party affiliations.

He has also criticised some APC governors opposing the initiative, accusing them of using the President’s name to cover their own political challenges.

Akhaine’s warning comes against the backdrop of concerns that the coalition could deepen divisions within the ruling party if politicians supporting Tinubu at the presidential level back candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative elections.

Recent developments in states including Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River have heightened those concerns, with Rainbow Coalition activities involving politicians from different parties.

Akhaine also reflected on the history of Nigerian political parties, arguing that selfish political interests can contribute to the destruction of established parties and the emergence of structures built around individual politicians.

He referenced the experience of the Alliance for Democracy and the political developments surrounding the party during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to him, political alliances are not unusual, but politicians must be careful not to weaken democratic institutions and political parties in pursuit of personal interests.

The analyst’s comments add to growing calls for Tinubu and his political allies to resolve the disagreement surrounding Wike’s Rainbow Coalition before it becomes a larger challenge for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

While Wike continues to frame the coalition as an effort to secure support for Tinubu, APC governors have made clear that their priority remains the party’s candidates at all levels.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt his proposal for reducing petrol prices, saying the President can rename the idea and take the credit if it will bring relief to Nigerians.

Atiku made the call on Friday, September 18, 2026, while speaking on fuel prices, palliatives and the rising cost of living.

He argued that the impact of high petrol prices had spread beyond filling stations, affecting transportation, food prices, production costs and the purchasing power of households.

According to Atiku, the government should be willing to reconsider policies when their consequences become burdensome for citizens.

He specifically urged Tinubu not to reject a policy simply because it was proposed by a political opponent.

“Bola Tinubu should not be ashamed to do what is necessary to lower the price of petrol simply because Atiku Abubakar proposed a government intervention,” Atiku said.

“He should just take the idea, rename it if he wishes, and even take the credit. What matters to me is that Nigerians pay less.”

Atiku said a policy should be judged by its impact rather than the identity of the person who proposed it.

“A sensible idea does not become a bad idea because it came from your opponent,” he added.

The former vice president also criticised the Federal Government’s reliance on palliatives, arguing that temporary relief measures cannot substitute for policies that address the underlying causes of economic hardship.

He said Nigerians were more concerned about what their income could buy than government economic indicators such as increased revenue and gross domestic product growth.

Atiku further warned against repeating what he described as the mistakes associated with petrol pricing when electricity subsidies are considered.

He called for measures that would reduce energy costs for households, manufacturers and small businesses.

The former vice president also outlined the policy he said he would implement if elected president in 2027.

According to him, his administration would introduce a transparent production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria and sold to Nigerian consumers.

The crisis surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino has deepened after German Football Association (DFB) Vice-President Hans-Joachim Watzke called for him to leave office.

Watzke made the demand while speaking at the Big Bang KI/AI Festival in Berlin, insisting that Infantino “has to go, no ifs or buts.”

The German football official cited three major issues behind his call for Infantino’s departure.

The first was the FIFA Peace Prize, which Infantino launched and awarded to United States President Donald Trump in December 2025 during the draw for the 2026 World Cup.

Watzke criticised the manner in which the award was created and presented, arguing that Infantino appeared to have made the decision without sufficient consultation.

He also questioned FIFA’s handling of the suspension involving United States forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup.

Balogun received a red card that initially ruled him out of the United States’ last-16 match against Belgium. His suspension was later postponed for a year after Trump contacted Infantino and asked for the punishment to be reviewed.

Watzke described the episode as unacceptable, particularly because of the involvement of a political leader in a disciplinary matter involving FIFA.

His third major complaint concerned Infantino’s abandoned proposal to establish a commercial company that would have allowed private investors to take a stake in FIFA’s World Cup-related assets.

The proposal, unveiled on July 28, was withdrawn four days later following strong opposition from football stakeholders.

Watzke said FIFA vice-presidents and members of the FIFA Council were not informed about the plan before it became public.

The German official’s comments came shortly after DFB President Bernd Neuendorf also criticised Infantino’s leadership.

Neuendorf said the relationship of trust between the DFB and Infantino’s FIFA leadership had been “completely shattered” and called for the current “Infantino system” to come to an end.

The DFB was also among the federations that did not sign a letter supporting Infantino’s re-election bid.

Infantino remains the only declared candidate for the FIFA presidency ahead of the election scheduled for March 18, 2027. The deadline for submitting candidacies is November 18, 2026.

The growing criticism from senior European football officials adds further pressure on Infantino as he prepares to seek another term at the head of world football.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has predicted that President Bola Tinubu will defeat former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, even if the two opposition candidates unite.

Fayose made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The former governor argued that the opposition would face an even greater challenge if Atiku and Obi contested separately, saying their votes could be divided across the country.

“Atiku is there, Obi is there. Even if they come together, this man (Tinubu) will still defeat them,” Fayose said.

He added that if the two opposition figures failed to unite, their votes would be further divided in what he described as a “balkanised” election.

Fayose also claimed that the South-West would produce a significant vote margin for Tinubu, questioning the ability of Atiku or Obi to secure substantial support in states such as Ekiti, Osun and Ondo.

The former governor predicted that Tinubu would secure more than 12 million votes in the 2027 election.

He attributed his prediction partly to what he described as improvements in the economy and infrastructure under the Tinubu administration.

Fayose said the President inherited an economy that was in a difficult situation after the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari but argued that Tinubu had since stabilised it.

He also cited the unification of the foreign exchange market, the student loan programme and road projects as examples of developments he believed could influence voters.

Fayose acknowledged that some Nigerians might disagree with his assessment of the administration's performance.

The former governor further argued that the presidency should remain in the South for eight years before power returns to the North.

According to him, Tinubu represented what he described as the “shortest point” for power to return to the North after the current administration.

He questioned whether Atiku, if elected, would be able to serve only one term before facing pressure to hand power back to the South.

Fayose also made reference to the possibility of a wider opposition contest involving other presidential candidates, arguing that multiple opposition candidates could further fragment the vote.

His comments come amid continuing discussions among opposition politicians over the possibility of forming a united platform ahead of the 2027 election.

The Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently reverse the latest increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) warning that the move could exacerbate the economic hardship Nigerians are facing

NOSCEF made the demand in a statement signed by its Chairman, Elder Sunday Oibe in the wake of rising cost of living across the country

The group argued that the nation was in the throes of hunger, insecurity, unemployment, soaring transportation costs and loss of purchasing power and that a further rise in petrol prices would put greater pressure on households

The elders questioned the wisdom of increasing the burden of petroleum products at a time when millions of Nigerians were struggling to feed their families

NOSCEF argued that the Federal Government needed to develop more sustainable and less burdensome methods of raising revenue rather than just perpetually adding to the costs borne by ordinary citizens

The group urged Tinubu to review the latest PMS price increase and take steps that would ease the economic pressure on households

NOSCEF also called on Tinubu to use the remaining time of his administration to restore purchasing power, create jobs, tackle insecurity and rehabilitate key infrastructure

The forum acknowledged that the Tinubu administration had made efforts in some areas but said the continued hardship of Nigerians showed that more needed to be done

It also urged the President to pay closer attention to the lives of ordinary citizens as opposed to just relying on positive assessments of the economy

The Christian elders said their members lived and worked among Nigerians and hence had seen the difficulties facing families and communities first hand

NOSCEF identified hunger, insecurity, unemployment, infrastructural decay and loss of purchasing power as major challenges contributing to the uncertainty among citizens

The forum consequently called for measures to reduce the cost of living, provide productive opportunities for young Nigerians, intensify efforts against insecurity and accelerate the rehabilitation and provision of critical infrastructure

It also warned that the patience of Nigerians should not be mistaken for a willingness to endure continued economic hardship

The group urged the government to show empathy, listen to citizens and take firm steps to prevent further deterioration in living conditions

The presidential list contains 18 candidates sponsored by different political parties.

Among the prominent presidential candidates are incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Other candidates include Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), Oluseyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Sandy Ojang Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nwankwo was also reported to have died in Johannesburg following an incident involving South African police.

A Lagos court has sentenced a 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel in the state.

All told, there’s no long-term human study available on honey and heart health. More research is needed to better understand honey’s effects on heart health.

Topical honey treatment has been used to heal wounds and burns since ancient Egypt. The practice is still common today.
A review of 26 studies on honey and wound care found it most effective at healing partial-thickness burns and wounds that have become infected after surgery.
Honey is also an effective treatment for diabetes-related foot ulcers, which are serious complications that can lead to amputation.
One study including people with diabetes-related foot ulcers reported a 43.3% success rate with honey as a wound treatment. In another study, topical honey healed an impressive 97% of participants’ diabetes-related ulcers.
Researchers theorize that honey’s healing powers come from its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
What’s more, it may help treat other skin conditions including psoriasis and herpes lesions.
Manuka honey is considered especially effective at treating burns. However, if you have a severe burn, you should seek medical attention immediately.

6. May help suppress coughing in children
Coughing is a common problem for children with upper respiratory infections. These infections can affect sleep and quality of life for both children and parents.
However, common cough medications are not always effective and can have side effects. Interestingly, honey may be a good alternative, with evidence indicating that it’s an effective treatment option.
One review of several studies on honey and cough in children found that honey appears to be more effective than diphenhydramine for cough symptoms. It may also help reduce cough duration.
Another review noted that it may also improve sleep quality among children with coughs, as well as their parents. Further, unlike some cough medicines, honey doesn’t have any side effects.
However, never give honey to children under 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism.

To get a small boost of antioxidants from honey, you can use it any way that you’d typically use sugar. It’s excellent for sweetening plain yogurt, coffee, or tea. You can also use it in cooking and baking.

Remember that you shouldn’t give honey to infants under 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism.
