Europe is filled with many countries and cultures that you can immerse yourself in while you’re there. While it may seem like a daunting and expensive trip, a European vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. By planning affordable travel and accommodations, you can easily manage your money while abroad. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to sight-see, try new foods, and meet new people on a budget! Finding Affordable Flight Book your flight 3-6 weeks in advance of your trip. Flight prices tend to get more expensive closer to the date that you plan on leaving. Start looking for flights about 2 months before you depart to get the lowest prices for air travel. Continue checking prices for the next few weeks to see if the price changes. Track flight prices on Google Flights to see when tickets are cheaper or more expensive. Turn on notifications for the days you plan on traveling to get alerts when prices change. Use a low-cost airline to save money. Before reserving seats on an airline you’re familiar with, check smaller airlines for more competitive prices. Budget airlines like Primera Air, Wow Air, and Norwegian Air offer one-way flights across the Atlantic Ocean for as low as $99 USD. Read the airline’s terms and conditions before purchasing tickets since they may have hidden fees for items such as carry-on bags or checked luggage. In the United States, airline prices may be cheaper if you fly out of an international hub airport, such as O’Hare in Chicago, New York City, or Boston. Fly into a small city nearby if you want to travel to a popular location. Flying directly to the city you want to visit may be more expensive than a flight to somewhere nearby. Compare prices for taking a direct flight to the area you want to visit as opposed to a smaller city in a different country. That way, you can easily travel by train or smaller airlines for much cheaper. For example, if you wanted to visit London, you may fly into Dublin instead for a cheaper flight and then travel to London from there. Tip: While layovers are usually annoying, choosing a flight that has 1-2 of them may be cheaper than a direct flight. Staying in cheap accommodations Look for hostels if you’re comfortable sharing a room. Hostels are residences where you can share a room with other people. Many hostels run at a fraction of the price of hotels so they’re more affordable for you to stay in. Plan on spending between about $20-$40 USD per night if you end up staying in a hostel. Depending on the hostel, a private room could be an option, but it may be more expensive than a shared space. Tip: Always check review sites, such as TripAdvisor, to see ratings and reviews of the hostels you’re interested in. Make sure they are reputable and that others have had a good experience there as well. Search for short-term home rentals to save money if you have a large group. Use a rental app, such as Airbnb or Homestay, to find private homes or apartments to rent for your stay. Many homes offer cheaper accommodations per person if you have a group of 4 or more. That way, you’ll also have access to a kitchen, a private bathroom, and a comfortable place to relax when you’re done traveling for the day. Talk to your host about local restaurants to try or recommendations for what to do while you’re visiting. Use a couch-surfing website to stay with locals in the area for free. Websites like CouchSurfing list homeowners that are willing to let travelers stay on a couch or in a spare bedroom for little or no cost. Reach out to the homeowner online and start talking about your trip to see if you could stay. When you arrive, make sure to be friendly and hold conversations with the owner so you can get to know what local life is like in the city. Couchsurfing doesn’t work well if you’re traveling with a large group or if you want privacy. Try camping if you want to stay in an outdoor area. Even if you’re visiting a larger city, you can find a campsite to stay at overnight. Many of the camping areas have bathrooms and cooking areas that you can use while you’re there. Check online for campgrounds to see if there are any sites available near your planned destination. Getting around Europe Get a rail pass to travel between locations in Europe easily. The train is one of the fastest ways to get from place to place in Europe. Look for an unlimited rail pass so you can travel by train as much as you want and arrive at destinations quickly. Many trains come with wi-fi, food and drink, and charging stations for electronics. Major cities may have their own metro and subway systems that require a different ticket than the main European railways. You can usually buy 3-day or 7-day passes for local metros if you plan on staying in the city more than 1 night. Buy tourist passes for public transportation if they’re available. Some cities offer packages just for tourists that give you free public transportation within city limits as well as admittance to many attractions there. Locate the tourist center in the city you’re visiting if it has one, and see what’s available for you. For example, a pass in Berlin gets you free entry to over 60 attractions, sightseeing tours, and a card for unlimited travel. Try flying on budget airlines between major cities to travel quickly. Companies like EasyJet and RyanAir offer cheap continental flights between cities in Europe. After booking your main flight to Europe, look for other connecting flights to cities you want to visit. Many of the flights are around $20-30 USD, but may be more expensive depending on how far you fly. Warning: Many smaller airlines have strict rules about the size or amount of luggage you bring. Make sure to pack light to avoid additional fees or checking a bag. Walk as much as you can to travel around a city for free. If you don’t want to spend much money to get around, try walking around the city to immerse yourself in the culture even more. Explore the city you’re visiting on foot to find places you might not have seen from a car. Take the time to stop and relax throughout the day in a park or public area. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes so your feet don’t hurt after a long day. Bring an empty water bottle with you to fill up in sinks or public fountains. Experiencing Europe on a Budget Pick a few must-see spots to plan a budget for them. If there are a few locations that you know you want to visit, make room in your budget to go. Choose 1-2 things you know you want to do and schedule them to make the most of your time. Look up admission prices online so you know how much to set aside during your visit. Check websites like Groupon to see if there are any deals you can get on the attractions you want to see. Search for how far your accommodations are from your must-see places and include traveling there in your budget if needed. Take advantage of free walking tours to see the city you’re visiting. Many cities have tours guides that will show you the main areas of the city. Follow the tour guide and listen to learn history and important information about your location. As you go on the tour, you can choose to leave at any time if you lose interest. Many walking tour guides only get paid in tips, so make sure to give them some money if you enjoyed the tour. Get food from restaurants away from tourist sites to save money. Watch where locals are eating and go to those vendors or restaurants instead of touristy locations in the city. Travel a few blocks away from main tourist areas to find restaurants in your budget. Many times, you’ll find food that’s cheaper and more authentic to the region. If your accommodations have a cooking area, buy groceries and cook for a meal or two each day to save more money. Visit street vendors to try new foods without spending money on a full meal. Avoid buying souvenirs if you don’t need them. Souvenirs can get pricey and they can take up a lot of room in your luggage. If you see something you want, ask yourself if it’s something that you need and can’t purchase anywhere else. Instead of buying the souvenir, take pictures to capture experiences that you’ll remember more than a keepsake. If the souvenir is something that you must have, then purchase it. Just make sure it’s easy to transport. FULL POST/SOURCE: https://thesmartcitizens./2019/04/14/cheaper-way-to-travel-to-europe/

Making a living from Zuckerberg’s Trash in San Francisco One of the clearest signs of capitalism’s unraveling is the enormous chasm between the super rich and very poor in San Francisco. The city also offers a kind of laboratory about the ways people survive off America’s waste. For The New York Times, Thomas Fuller follows Jake Orta, a military veteran who spends his days gathering discarded material from wealthy residents’ trash bins to resell later for, if all goes well, $300 a week. He’s one of a few hundred residents who make their marginal livings this way in a city teeming with tech money and plagued by chronic homelessness. Mr. Orta has found numerous items in the bin outside Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s $10 million dollar home. At dusk he leaves his apartment building, which is wedged between a popular brunch spot for tech workers and a cannabis shop in the heart of the Mission neighborhood. The smell of marijuana fills the vestibule. Walking up a steep hill lined with mature trees, he passes homes that could pass for works of art: Victorians, some with stained glass and elaborate cornices and moldings painted in a soft palette of pastels, ocher, celadon and teal. A virtual tour of the neighborhood on the Zillow site shows that homes valued at $3 million and above are the norm. But Mr. Orta doesn’t look at the architecture. He walks the streets, slightly stooped, his eyes on the ground and a flashlight in his back pocket. His friends call him the Finder. On the six times Mr. Orta went out with a reporter, he followed a variety of circuits, but usually ended up exploring his favorite alleys and a dumpster that has been bountiful. (The first rule of dumpster scavenging, he said, is to make sure there’s no raccoon or possum in there.) In March, the dumpster yielded a box of silver goblets, dishes and plates, as if someone had yanked a tablecloth from underneath a feast in some European chateau READ FULL STORY https://thesmartcitizens./2019/04/09/zuckerbergs-trash-is-a-subcultures-treasure/ Source: https://thesmartcitizens./

This was disclosed by the state governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari on Tuesday, April 9, in Gusau during a Town hall meeting attended by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu. “Nearly 500 villages have also been devastated and 8,219 persons were injured, some are still in critical condition.” The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi, also said that over 13,000 hecters of farmlands were either destroyed or made useless as the farmers can no longer farm them. “The economy of the state has seriously suffered because thousands of shops were destroyed by the rampaging bandits who had displaced thousands of our people from their places of abode, many of whom cannot sleep with their two eyes closed because of fear,” he added. Yari said the government had written volumes of reports containing over 7,000 pages, giving details of the crises right from the beginning to the infiltration from Libya and Boko Haram. He disclosed that the government was aware of eight prominent bandits camps at different bush locations in the state, and urged that they should all be neutralized in order to decimate the criminals. The governor said that recent suspension of mining activities in the state by the federal government must “be followed by enforcement, because, it is one thing to ban, and another to enforce.” Earlier, Adamu, the acting IGP, told the gathering that the police would take more proactive measures in the fight against bandits and commended the state government for providing enabling environment to security personnel to operate in the state. Rimi stated this on Tuesday, April 9, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s town-hall meeting with Nigerians who are based in the UAE, Daily Trust reports. He said the 446 Nigerians are in prisons over drugs and other crimes. Recall that this disclosure is coming weeks after five Nigerians were arrested over armed robbery in Dubai. The senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this known in a statement by her media aide Abdur-Rahman Balogun on Tuesday, April 2, in Abuja. N6,120 per hour: Nigeria’s monthly minimum wage earned in just 5 hours on duty in American company – even by unskilled staff The agitation for a new national minimum wage of N30,000 ($83.33) by Nigeria’s labour unions led to industrial action and a series of back and forth meeting between the government and the labour leaders in 2018. The state governors insisted they cannot afford to pay a minimum wage of N30,000, adding that they are still struggling to pay the current N18,000 minimum wage. True, some states, at the current minimum wage, are still owing their workers months of salaries. However, the National Assembly eventually passed N30,000 as the new national minimum wage. While debating the new minimum wage bill, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said the proposed N30,000 is not enough for Nigerian workers considering current economic realities in the country. The speaker said the only way to curb corruption in Nigeria is for the government to pay a living wage and not just a minimum wage. Dogara’s statement may not be far from the truth, especially when the new minimum wage is compared to what workers in other countries earn. In the United States, Bank of America said starting May 1, its employees’ hourly minimum wage will rise to $17 (N6,120). According to CNBC, the bank also promised the hourly minimum wage will go higher in the next two years to become $20 (N7,200) an hour. "If you get a job at Bank of America, you'll make $41,000" a year, chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan was quoted to have said. "With the success our company has ... we have to share that success with our teammates." When compared to the situation in Nigeria, it means it takes employees, even at the lowest rung, with Bank of America just 5 hours to earn what Nigerian government workers earn in a month. Also, it will take the BOA workers just four hours to earn what Nigerian government workers earn in a month, in two years time—other things being equal. https://thesmartcitizens./2019/04/09/5-hours-needed-to-earn-nigerias-monthly-minimum-wage-in-american-company/ Source: www.thesmartcitizens.

7 Things The World Richest People Never Do Our habits tend to define who we are. If you make it a point to drive recklessly every day, nobody will be surprised when you eventually get into a traffic accident. This seems obvious to us. Yet the financial equivalent of this principle, tolerating bad monetary habits on a regular basis until you're driven into poverty, seems less obvious. For the most part, the richest people in the world didn't get to their position overnight. They didn't stumble into money, and it wasn't given to them as a gift. They accumulated it, and continue to maintain it, as a direct result of their daily habits and their underlying philosophies. These are seven things you'll never catch the world's richest people doing: 1. Playing the lottery. The lottery comes with a bold promise: a chance to win more money than you'd ever know what to do with. But the odds of winning are astronomically low, and logically, you have a far better chance of creating your own wealth than getting lucky and winning someone else's. The world's wealthiest people had no interest in taking chances; instead, they chose to forge their own paths, and as a result, they worked harder, and saw more tangible results. Plus, remember that instant wealth means nothing if you don't know how to manage it--countless lottery winners found themselves bankrupt shortly after winning because they splurged or managed it poorly. 2. Hoping for better outcomes. There's nothing inherently wrong with hope; it's a positive emotion that leads us to more optimistic lives. But for the world's richest people, hope isn't nearly enough. Hope doesn't solve problems. It doesn't create opportunities. It doesn't change anything. If you want to move past a certain chapter of your life, or achieve a certain outcome, you have to move beyond hoping and start taking action. Only through initiated, meaningful changes will you be able to make any difference. The next time you find yourself in a bad situation and hoping for something better, stop hoping and make a better situation for yourself. 3. Abandoning their goals. Goals are crucial for success; they keep you focused, they help you prioritize, and they lead you to bigger, better things. By some estimates, 80 percent of the world's richest people make and follow goals regularly. Compare that to only 12 percent of the poor. But it isn't enough to merely create goals--it's the process of sticking with them, no matter what, that separates the strong-willed from the weak-willed. If you set your goals sufficiently high, you won't be able to hit all of them all the time. But instead of giving up when you fail to meet a goal, it's better to transform or reimagine that goal. Keep making progress. 4. Forgoing self-improvement. Self-improvement is a crucial step in accumulating wealth. People tend to make money based on how valuable they are, and their monetary value stems from their experience, their skills, their expertise, and their familiarity with their respective industries. All these qualities can be meaningfully enhanced through simple, gradual exercises, such as reading the news every day or going out of your way to challenge yourself and build up your skillset. In the words of Richard Branson, "I see life almost like one long university education that I never had–every day I’m learning something new." 5. Living above their means. When most people fall into debt or find themselves unable to pay the bills, it comes down to one critical mistake; living a lifestyle that requires a greater income than you're actually receiving. Imagine for a moment you make N250,000 a month, and you pay N150,000 in rent and about N70,000 in other regular expenses. That only leaves you N50,000 leftover--if rent goes up or you have an emergency, you'll immediately start accumulating debt, which becomes more and more difficult to pay off. The world's richest people got to where they are and continue to stay there because they live below their means. If they made N250,000 a month, they'd make sure their expenses never went above, for instance, N180,000, leaving an ample N70,000 a month for unanticipated expenses, saving, and investment. 6. Settling for less. Rich people started out with their minds made up. At some point, they decided they were going to be rich someday. They convinced themselves that they deserved to be rich, and they started seeing their lives in different terms because of it. While not necessarily demanding, rich people never settle for less when they know they deserve more. They negotiate. They seek higher salaries. They look for better opportunities. They don't just accept things and move on; they're always looking for the best of all possible scenarios. 7. You shouldn’t kill spiders when you find them in your home, expert claims If you find an enormous spider in your house, it can be difficult to damp down the panic response which tells you, ‘Kill it! Kill it!’ But it’s actually a bad idea, at least according to one expert Spiders will hide away if they think you can see them – so you won’t be ‘getting rid’ of the spiders in your house, as there are probably more. Spider expert Matt Bertone of North Carolina State University says that the creatures can also perform a vital function by getting rid of insects. Bertone said in an essay for The Conversation, ‘It’s OK to have spiders in your home. In fact, it’s normal. And frankly, even if you don’t see them, they’ll still be there. Bertone says, ‘Although they are generalist predators, apt to eat anything they can catch, spiders regularly capture nuisance pests and even disease-carrying insects – for example, mosquitoes. So killing a spider doesn’t just cost the arachnid its life, it may take an important predator out of your home.’ Bertone suggests that if you’re bothered, you should take the spider outside, where it will happily scuttle off to find a new home. Well, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, once did that just to look at the cash and convince himself that he is truly rich. Dangote himself confirmed his action at the Mo Ibrahim governance weekend in Abidjan. “The way it is is that when you first start business, your target is to make your first million. Fine, I did that,” online publication The Cable quoted him as saying. “After a year or so, I realised that I had much more, and I said ok, fine, all these numbers are just written numbers. “One day I went to a bank, and at that time, there were no restrictions, and I wrote a cheque and cashed $10m from the bank and put it in the boot of my vehicle, and I went home and I opened it and I looked at $10m and I said ‘now I believe I have money’.” Mission accomplished, Dangote returned the cash to the bank the following day. Dangote is reckoned as the 74th richest man in the world with assets worth $16.4 billion. Fufu is dangerous, Eba can kill you!! Doctors make shocking discoveries about some favourite Nigerian foods that can send you to early grave- Details can save your life While food is good for the body and necessary for survival, humans are also expected to be wary of the meals they ingest and the rate at which they consume them. Some types of food, if taken excessively, are capable of causing health risks. The onus is on you to learn why certain foods are unhealthy, why you shouldn’t take them and how you can make better choices on daily basis. Here are some unhealthy meals Doctors have warned Nigerians to be cautious about their consumption: Egusi soup: At the mention of this soup, many will salivate as it is much-loved by many Nigerians… but hold that saliva. Egusi contains something called phytosterols which when consumed, compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive system. Also, egusi has a high level of calories and when garnished with few chunks of stock fish and two pieces of meat, it has a total of roughly 700 calories per serving. Imagine consuming it with about 3 wraps of eba which is about 600 calories. Loaf of sliced bread: Bread is widely consumed daily across the country especially because it doesn’t have to be cooked before consumption. Bread belongs to the class of starchy foods and overt consumption increases the risk of getting diabetes. If you are taking in 100 grams of bread, you are consuming 265 calories, especially if it is white bread. Some Nigerian-made breads are also not completely bromate free. Potassium bromate is added to help strengthen the bread dough and this chemical is cancerous. If you can steer off bread, there are other excellent choices that are low in carbs. One minute Noodles: While noodles can’t be called a Nigerian food, it has been adopted into Nigeria’s stream of foods such that it is consumed by both young and old. Nigerians go for noodles because it is cheap, easy and fast to cook, hence the name “instant noodles.” Tests have revealed that noodles contain high sodium which aside being cancerous, causes heart disease and skin damage. Eating too much of noodles is bad for digestion and it also leads to obesity. Eba: Processed from cassava, garri is a food rich in carbohydrate; both the yellow and the white type. Garri helps to restore lost energy but a high rate of consumption does more harm than good. A cup of garri contains about 360 calories, 95% of which is carbohydrates and further consumption with soup, meat and/or fish, increases the level of calories. Consuming a great deal of starchy foods like eba is like welcoming excess weight with open arms. Fufu, made from cassava: Fufu is another staple food made from cassava and its origin can be traced to Ghana. Fufu is of good nutritional value as it is rich in protein, fat, carbohydrates, potassium and low in cholesterol. Some are turned off by the smell that fufu gives and/or the fact that it takes longer time to digest. Research has it that every part of cassava plant has a toxic chemical called Linamarin. This chemical, even after boiling the cassava, doesn’t change its state and this could be harmful during digestion. Image result for Fufu Also, under-processing of fufu, which is rampant, has harmful implications on the health. This is because the cyanide content is not reduced to a non-toxic state. Women and children are susceptible to cyanide poisoning as they are usually the ones who carry out the processing of fufu. Fried plantain: There is a meme trending on social media about plantain which reads, “How can you say in good faith that the God who created plantain doesn’t love you?”. This is proof of the love people have for plantain. Granted, plantain is a good source of carbohydrates, vitamin B6, vitamin C and is also a natural remedy for peptic ulcer. However, plantain contains a considerable amount of carbohydrates and more calories are produced when it is fried in oil. Also, the water content decreases when fried and this might not be satiating enough. Integrating plantain into your diet is making way for ample calorie intake. Taking 100 grams of plantain is consuming about 30 grams of carbohydrates, 15 grams of sugar and 120 calories. Other methods of cooking plantain (aside frying) should be adopted if one cannot live without plantain. Pastries: There’s an endless list of flour-based pastries which are baked, fried or roasted and are often taken between meals. Healthy snacking helps you maintain physical and mental energy and it also helps one have control over main meals. Snacking is however, only healthy when it is done to control appetite and meet nutritional needs. It shouldn’t become a habit because many snack foods are high in fat, calories, sugar and salt. One tends to gain extra pounds through added daily calories if snacking is done out of boredom or habit. Consuming too many sugary pastries could also lead to tooth decay. Endeavour to avoid buying pastries on the street. Home-made pastries are advisable as one is sure of the type of oil used for the preparation. Oil when used over time becomes acidic but most sellers tend to keep old oil in use and keep frying with oil which is already harmful to Rice: Rice is rich in carbohydrates and fairly low in calories. It is a good source of energy because it is carbohydrate-dense. Consuming too much of carbohydrate-dense foods may cause one to eat little of other nutritious meals needed for a healthy life. Eating too much rice could adversely affect glucose metabolism in the body. White rice contains about 4 grams of fiber per cup and consuming it in excess would fill one up preventing intake of other foods. White rice is also low in phytic acid because of the bran which is always removed during processing. Ample research has it that white rice increases the risk of getting diabetes. It is advisable to consume brown rice or reduce the rate of white rice consumption. Pounded yam: A lot of Nigerians love pounded yam and it is widely consumed across the country. Pounded yam is a source of carbohydrate and a good source of energy which contains dietary fiber that helps reduce constipation. Pounded yam is high in calories as a small slice of yam contains about 330 calories and one tin cup of pounded yam contains about 400 calories from carbohydrates alone. Pounded yam has the highest glycemic index compared to boiled yam and the process of arriving at pounded yam makes carbohydrates more available to enzymes that disintegrate the carbohydrates to glucose. Eating pounded yam is consuming calories with no real nutrition. Diabetic patients are advised to steer off foods with high starch and embrace foods with low starch. Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate — a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Usually prostate cancer grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm. However, while some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly. Prostate cancer that's detected early — when it's still confined to the prostate gland— has a better chance of successful treatment. Symptoms Prostate cancer may cause no signs or symptoms in its early stages. Prostate cancer that's more advanced may cause signs and symptoms such as: Trouble urinating Decreased force in the stream of urine Blood in semen Discomfort in the pelvic area Bone pain Erectile dysfunction When to see a doctor Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you. Debate continues regarding the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening, and medical organizations differ on their recommendations. Discuss prostate cancer screening with your doctor. Together, you can decide what's best for you. Causes Prostate gland It's not clear what causes prostate cancer. Doctors know that prostate cancer begins when some cells in your prostate become abnormal. Mutations in the abnormal cells' DNA cause the cells to grow and divide more rapidly than normal cells do. The abnormal cells continue living, when other cells would die. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade nearby tissue. Some abnormal cells can also break off and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Risk factors Factors that can increase your risk of prostate cancer include: Age. Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you age. Race. For reasons not yet determined, black men carry a greater risk of prostate cancer than do men of other races. In black men, prostate cancer is also more likely to be aggressive or advanced. Family history. If men in your family have had prostate cancer, your risk may be increased. Also, if you have a family history of genes that increase the risk of breast cancer (BRCA1 or BRCA2) or a very strong family history of breast cancer, your risk of prostate cancer may be higher. Obesity. Obese men diagnosed with prostate cancer may be more likely to have advanced disease that's more difficult to treat. Complications Complications of prostate cancer and its treatments include: Cancer that spreads (metastasizes). Prostate cancer can spread to nearby organs, such as your bladder, or travel through your bloodstream or lymphatic system to your bones or other organs. Prostate cancer that spreads to the bones can cause pain and broken bones. Once prostate cancer has spread to other areas of the body, it may still respond to treatment and may be controlled, but it's unlikely to be cured. Incontinence. Both prostate cancer and its treatment can cause urinary incontinence. Treatment for incontinence depends on the type you have, how severe it is and the likelihood it will improve over time. Treatment options may include medications, catheters and surgery. Erectile dysfunction can result from prostate cancer or its treatment, including surgery, radiation or hormone treatments. Medications, vacuum devices that assist in achieving erection and surgery are available to treat erectile dysfunction. Prevention You can reduce your risk of prostate cancer if you: Choose a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables. Avoid high-fat foods and instead focus on choosing a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and nutrients that can contribute to your health. Whether you can prevent prostate cancer through diet has yet to be conclusively proved. But eating a healthy diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables can improve your overall health. Choose healthy foods over supplements. No studies have shown that supplements play a role in reducing your risk of prostate cancer. Instead, choose foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals so that you can maintain healthy levels of vitamins in your body. Exercise most days of the week. Exercise improves your overall health, helps you maintain your weight and improves your mood. There is some evidence that men who don't exercise have higher PSA levels, while men who exercise may have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Try to exercise most days of the week. If you're new to exercise, start slow and work your way up to more exercise time each day. Maintain a healthy weight. If your current weight is healthy, work to maintain it by exercising most days of the week. If you need to lose weight, add more exercise and reduce the number of calories you eat each day. Ask your doctor for help creating a plan for healthy weight loss. Talk to your doctor about increased risk of prostate cancer. Men with a high risk of prostate cancer may consider medications or other treatments to reduce their risk. Some studies suggest that taking 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, including finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart), may reduce the overall risk of developing prostate cancer. These drugs are used to control prostate gland enlargement and hair loss in men. However, some evidence indicates that men taking these medications may have an increased risk of getting a more serious form of prostate cancer (high-grade prostate cancer). If you're concerned about your risk of developing prostate cancer, talk with your doctor.
