The major problem we have had over the years is throwing money at everything. I feel it's a bit awkward to prioritise salary before your ambitions of working at such a place in a corporate world. One even said 'let me know if I can risk coming'. Strange.

Sharing a range before knowing the ability/value of a potential employee can attract ugly eggs and potentially keep away the valuable ones. You can peg a salary at an amount, but be willing to increase it for those whose value are worth it. You can also peg it at too high to get the great hands, and end up inflating job market needlessly.

You are correct, but with the sad reality of the current economic hardship, you wont want blame anybody that wants to know what they'll be paid before committing themselves. The country is harsh and hard. Even to feed you have to think well.
