The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has confirmed that the initial unrest that broke out at the Mile 12 area of Lagos State is under control.
The state police PRO also confirmed that free movement has been restored to the area.
It was earlier reported reported that fighting erupted in some areas on the popular Lagos-Ikorodu expressway in Lagos State over the scarcity of the new naira notes and the hardship the policy has thrown Nigerians.
It was gathered that suspected louts in Mile 12, Ketu and Ojota areas on the expressway, took to the road attacking commuters and creating chaos.
A driver, attached to one of the cab-hailing firms operating in the state who does not want his name in print over fears of harassment, said he had to turn into one of the streets due to the chaos.
Tweeps, who shared details of the ongoing fighting in the area, alleged they could hear sounds of gunshots.
However, Hundeyin, who initially confirmed the unrest, has now said that sanity has been restored to the area, adding that men of the Lagos State Police Command are on the ground to ensure no further breakdown of law and order.
Making this known via his Twitter handle, he wrote, “Free movement of vehicles and people fully restored. Our officers and men are still on ground to prevent any breakdown of law and order.”
Hundeyin also retweeted a tweet from a Twitter user who confirmed that sanity has been restored to the area.
The tweet read, “Road is clear now, na there I pass now to Ikorodu.”
The crisis in the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Wednesday with a former governorship candidate in the party, Segun Sowunmi, saying he is still in the governorship race.
Sowunmi made the assertion in Abeokuta, the state capital during a day workshop for about 300 ward party mobilisers and collation agents from the 20 local government area of the state ahead of the general election
He added that he had instituted a case at the Supreme Court with the expression of optimism that he would emerge victorious as the governorship candidate of the party in the state.
The PDP stalwart tasked party faithful on unity of purpose, urging them to ensure an overwhelming victory for the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar in the oncoming election.
He however charged party members to go back to the wards and mobilise votes for the party.
Sowunmi also warned them against any form of manipulation during the election, just as he commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the reforms in the electoral processes in the country.

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday promised to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Complex in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, if elected. He also promised to dredge River Niger to enable ships berth in its inland ports.
Tinubu also said his government will prioritise development of mineral resources in the Confluence State.
Hailing the Supreme Court ruling on the old and new Naira denominations, the eminent politician said those who sought to make a political capital out of the currency swap have been shamed.
Tinubu spoke at a rally attended by a party faithful and supporters in Lokoja, capital of Kogi State.
At the rally were APC Vice Presidential Candidate Senator Kashim Shettima, APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Abubakar Kyari, Governors Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger) and Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa).
The rally was also attended by APC National Women Leader, Dr. Betta Edu; Secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council, James Faleke; former Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar and Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Unveiling an industrialisation plan, he said: “Hope is here. Ajaokuta resuscitation will be done. Dredging of Niger River will be done. Agriculture will be the source of our prosperity. North Central has the potential for great mineral industrialisation, we will work on that.”
Tinubu felicitated with the people of Kogi State and other Nigerians over the Supreme Court judgment on the currency swap impasse, saying those who wanted to take advantage of the situation have failed.
He said members of the opposition were counting on the unintended suffering caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy to play to their advantage.
Tinubu lauded the crowd for turning up for the event in spite of the challenges, urging them to repeat the same on the day of election.
He said the opposition wanted to take advantage of the people’s hardship.
Tinubu stresssed: “They even rejoiced when you cannot sell your products. You will never see hardship in your lives. You will see prosperity, you will see progress.
“This your determination, I want you to multiply it. On the 25th of February, there will be vote for president, for senators and House of Representatives members, it is in your hands now. But we have come to remind you, whether by Keke NAPEP, or by bicycle or even with your legs, you should go here in the morning. Cast your vote, be vigilant. Do your part, play your own role.”
Tinubu assured the electorate of the best deal when they elect him as president, promising to execute projects that will foster development.
He said: “I know how to do it. I am smarter than their candidate. I am the front runner, the best candidate. I know the road. I am a man who knows how to develop wealth, a man who keeps promises.”
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello recalled that the state had a good showing for the APC during the 2019 poll, saying the performance will be surpassed at the general election.
The governor also chided members of the opposition parties who, he said, were counting on the “unbearable” situation to reap support at the polls.
Bello said: “We have seen clearly between light and darkness. Some few elements decided to make life unbearable so that our party will be affected.
“Our leader made his stance clear to the whole country. He showed that he is with the people. Some people decided to make a political capital out of it.”
He described the cashless policy as “a good policy which some people want to turn around to inflict hardship on our people”.
Governor Bello said with the Supreme Court order, “hope has been renewed. Go ahead and use your money, the old and the new Naira.”
All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed the Governors of the 36 states for standing on the side of the Nigerian people over the Central Bank new Naira and cashless policies that have subjected the masses to pains.
According to Asiwaju Tinubu, the Governors especially the APC Governors who instituted the suit against the CBN and Federal Government at the Supreme Court acted well on behalf of the hapless Nigerians who have been made to bear the brunt of Naira redesign policy that has been poorly implemented
The Supreme Court on Wednesday morning in a law suit brought before it by the governments of Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna States gave an interim injunction against the CBN and Federal Government, allowing the old N200, N500 and N1000 to remain legal tender beyond February 10 deadline until the case is fully disposed.
Following the apex court ruling, Asiwaju Tinubu noted that the governors have saved the country from a needless political and economic crises and miseries which have clearly become the unintended consequences of the monetary policy of the apex bank.
Asiwaju Tinubu noted that the Supreme Court ruling coincided with the advisory of the International Monetary Fund urging for the extension of the deadline for the swap of the old naira notes, going by the problems being experienced across the country in getting the new notes.
"I want to salute the courage of our Governors and most especially the Progressives Governors in APC who acted to save our country from avoidable and dangerous political crises and social unrest which the Central Bank policy on new Naira notes has brought on our country.
“Our country was dangerously careering toward anarchy and political and economic shutdown. But with the Supreme Court interim ruling our country has been pulled back from the precipice. We thank our Supreme Court Justices for ruling wisely on the side of the people who have been subjected to undue agony and pains since this policy was announced.
"The Federal Government and relevant stakeholders can now sit down and work out better framework on how to proceed with the new policy without causing any social and economic disruption and inconvenience to our people. We have examples of other countries that have successfully and seamlessly changed their currencies to learn from.
“Those countries give a long time, at least 12 months to effect the currency change. They do not engage in CBN-like Fire Brigade approach.
"We have seen how a good policy can be poorly implemented to cause unintended problems for the people who should be the beneficiaries. While lessons have been learnt, we must now move on as a country and people with a Renewed Hope for a better tomorrow.
“The sole aim of my running to be the president of our country is to make life better and more abundant for our people and this is an ideal for which I will remain eternally committed to."
Asiwaju Tinubu called on the CBN to ensure that the Supreme Court ruling is effectively executed by taking all necessary steps to (i) ensure sufficient availability of Naira notes (whether old or new) and (ii) properly sensitising the public on the ruling and the consequent validity of old Naira.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has on Monday dismissed the suit by a former presidential candidate of Hope Democratic Party, Chief Ambrose Owuru, against the election of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in the 2019 presidential election.
The suit seeking Buhari’s was dismissed by Justice Inyang Ekwo on three grounds.
One of the grounds was that the suit constituted a gross abuse of court process, statute barred and was an affront to the supremacy of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The judge also held that the suit was baseless and frivolous.
The PUNCH reports that Owuru had instituted the legal action against Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Owuru, a British-trained constitutional lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984 asked the Federal High Court to declare him as the winner of the poll.
Among other reliefs, he had asked the court to determine the legality or otherwise of the decision by INEC in 2019 during which it postponed the election from February 16 to March 23.
He claimed that INEC acted against the constitution in illegal and unlawful ways and manners the presidential poll was shifted and the declaration of Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the unlawful act should be declared null and void and of no effect.
The ground of his claim was predicated on the fact that the petition he lodged against Buhari had not been adjudicated upon by the Supreme Court as required by law.
The politician claimed that his petition at the Supreme Court was unjustly dismissed following his absence from the Apex Court due to discrepancies in the hearing dates conveyed to him.
He, therefore, prayed the court removes Buhari and declares him (Owuru) the authentic President and that Buhari should be compelled to refund all monies he collected as salaries, emoluments and security votes.
The HDP presidential candidate also asked the court to order his inauguration for a four-year tenure of office upon removal of Buhari from office and that the Federal High Court should stop INEC from conducting the 2023 presidential election.
While claiming that his tenure had been usurped by President Buhari, the plaintiff prayed that the court should compel Buhari to refund all monies he collected as salaries, emoluments and security votes.
Justice Ekwo had on November 4 last year fixed January 30 as the judgment date following the adoption of final addresses by Buhari, the AGF, INEC and the plaintiff.
