The head of Nigeria’s biggest lender has called on the central bank to ease regulations he said are hurting profits and causing some foreign investors to shun Africa’s largest economy.

A rule forcing banks to place 31 percent of deposits with the regulator needs to changed, said Bisi Onasanya, chief executive officer of First Bank of Nigeria Ltd. The requirement should be lowered or the central bank should pay interest on the funds, he said.

“The existing cash reserve regime is not helpful,” Onasanya said Thursday in an interview during a Bloomberg conference at the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos.

First Bank has close to 650 billion naira ($3.3 billion) sterilized at the central bank at zero percent interest. These are funds we pay interest on. So you can imagine the impact this has on our revenue-generating capabilities and our ability to fund loan obligations.

The central bank of Africa’s largest oil producer has increased reserve requirements as part of measures to bolster the naira, which fell 18 percent against the dollar in the past year as crude prices slumped. Ratcheting up the ratio reduces the amount of naira in circulation, helping to bolster its value.

If the central bank must keep that level, which I feel is very high, it should be complemented with some cushioning effects, Onasanya said.

The central bank should consider remunerating, even at the average cost of funds, for banks to be able to meet their funding costs.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has written to the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in response to an earlier letter by the party leadership captioned, party position on principal officers of the 8th Senate where the APC forwarded to him the names of those it wants to be principal officers.

Saraki used his letter to explain why he could not see to the implementation of the party’s wishes, noting that his hands were tied on the issue.

He noted in the letter that,

the said letter was received after the various APC zonal caucuses had taken their decisions to nominate candidates as Principal Officers of the Senate in line with parliamentary convention and the extant provisions of the Senate Standing Orders 2015 as amended.

Senator Saraki had read yesterday, to the hearing of all at the Upper Chamber, the names of the elected Principal Officers appointed from the various Zonal caucuses meeting of the party, APC, which was contrary to the party leaders’ preferred candidates.

Nigeria will probably be hit by fuel shortages in three weeks as the government doesn’t have enough money to pay for gasoline subsidies, according to the head of Seplat Petroleum Development Co Plc.

American rapper, Rick Ross, has been taken into custody by the fugitive task force of United States Marshals Service on Wednesday after being arrested at his mansion in Atlanta, Georgia over kidnap and assault charges. He was taken into custody with a man described as his bodyguard.

The rapper is being held in jail on charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Local news station reported that the incident also involved a builder who was working on his house.

They claim Ross got into a fight with one of the workers and pistol-whipped him.

Ross’ bodyguard, whose name hasn’t been released, faces the same charges.

US entertainment website TMZ says the incident is said to have taken place two weeks ago.

Jim Joyner, a supervisor with the Marshals’ Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, told the AP news agency that officers showed up at the mansion, once owned by boxer Evander Holyfield, but someone inside refused to let them in.

They refused to open the gate, so we opened the gate for them, Joyner said.

He, however, said that there was no struggle.

He said that once officers got past the gate, someone inside opened the front door so they didn’t have to break it down.

Two weeks ago, Ross was booked into the county jail on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

In that case, Ross and a passenger were pulled over because the windows of the Bentley in which they were travelling in broke tinting regulations.

The officer who arrested him said he smelled marijuana and found some inside the car.

Dr Adebola Ogunbiyi, Consultant Dermatologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has said that 47 per cent of Nigeria’s young females have frontal balding before age 19.

Ogunbiyi disclosed this in Ibadan while speaking at a symposium organised to mark the 2015 World Health Skin Day, on June 18, by the National Association of Dermatologists.

She said the frontal balding was as a result of recurrent traction of the hair during braising, weaving and relaxing of the hair.

Ogunbiyi, who is also the President of the association, said this year’s theme: “The African Scalp and hair: Problems and Solutions”, was apt and appropriate.
The World Health Skin Day was inaugurated in Nigeria in 2014, at a meeting of all dermatologists in Africa.

We are educating people on issues affecting the skin and scalp, and this year’s theme is dedicated to addressing diseases of the hair and scalp, she said.

Ogunbiyi said Nigerians have no adequate information and knowledge about their hair and skin, because dermatologists are very few in the country and very few people have access to quality skin healthcare.

She said the

function of the skin is to regulate its temperature, produce vitamin D and serve as barrier to infection and sunlight.

She disclosed that hair problems in Nigerian women had become worrisome, as most hair stylists were not properly trained and equipped in hair and scalp management.

She added that most of them do not adhere to instructions from manufacturers and as a result the hair and scalp are damaged when applying chemicals and braiding the hair.

Because of the nature of the African hair which is curly, shorter, breaks easily, various grooming methods have become difficult and painful.

Traction should be avoided when doing weaving, braiding and corn-rows as this may cause inflammation and breaking in future, particularly to the frontal hair.

The hair should be washed thoroughly with water through a shower which applies pressure that pushes the chemicals out, after applying relaxers, said the expert.

Dr Omololu Enigbokan, a resident doctor, advised women and men who use bleaching soaps and creams to stop the act because they were injurious to skin health.

People should know the PH level of the soap they use and routine use of medicated soaps is not advisable.

They are harsh on the body and contain a high PH level (normal soaps contain 5 per cent) which is not beneficial to the skin, he said.

Enigbokan advised Nigerians to know their skin types as this would guide them in choosing appropriate soaps and creams.

He said the skin absorbs water into our bodies through hydration, adding that regular bathing with water improve hydration of the skin.

Prof. Kunle George, a consultant dermatologist in UCH, who spoke on how men could manage acne keloidalis (Bumps), said the disease was common in African men.

Bumps manifests on the back of the head of the black male, itchy and may cause pain when infected by bacteria, adding that it initially appears as painless and un-itchy bumps.

Avoid scratching which promotes inflammation and scraping it may lead to scar keloids, he warned.

The Abia State Police Command has rounded up a middle-aged woman identified as Mrs Agnes Uchendu alongside her son, Ikechukwu Uchendu, in Umuahia for allegedly inflicting injuries on their house-maids using hot electric iron.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, in Umuahia, the suspects were rounded up based on a petition by the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Abia State Chapter, led by one Florence E. Igwe, Esq.

Onyeke noted that the suspects allegedly tortured their house helps, Hope Ajunwa, 11, and 9-year-old Ngozi Ajunwa.

He said,

Upon the receipt of the petition, operatives proceeded to the given address and arrested both suspects and rescued the victims. One of the victims, Ngozi Ajunwa, had injuries on the sole of her foot and other parts of her body.

The victims had wounds on other parts of their bodies which were inflicted by the suspect with a hot electric pressing iron.

The police spokesperson further stated that the suspect upon interrogation, confessed to the crime, stressing that,

Ikechukwu admitted committing the crime alleging that the minors stole one hundred Naira.

Onyeke averred that the victims were taken to the Nigeria Police Clinic, Umuahia for medical attention.

He said the matter was still been investigated, noting that they will soon be charged to court soon.

Princess Charlotte would be christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Sandringham on Sunday, July 5, 2015 it has been announced.

The baby, who was born on May 2, 2015, would be christened by Most Rev. Justin Welby in a private ceremony at St Mary Magdalene Church in the Norfolk town.
Kensington Palace said in a short statement:

Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce the christening of Princess Charlotte will take place on Sunday, 5th July at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham.

Princess Charlotte will be christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are currently living at Anmer Hall which is where they are expected to spend much of their time while their children are young.

The house is only around three miles from the church which is where the royal family usually attend a Christmas service.

The date in early July may have been chosen as it fits with the Queen’s plans as she would be going to Balmoral for the summer.

The princess’ older brother, George, was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury at St James’s Palace in October 2013.

That service was also an intimate gathering, with around 60 friends and family members attending.

George wore a Honiton lace christening gown, which was a replica of the one used by more than 60 members of the Royal Family since 1841.
