ASUU has threatened to mobilise Nigerians to the streets to protest against the proposed removal of oil subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Dr Ademola Aremu, chairman of ASUU, while speaking at a symposium organised by ASUU on the proposed subsidy removal, which took place at the Institute of African Studies, on Friday, said the union rejected the proposal entirely. There are about 71,000 Nigerian students in Ghana paying about a billion US dollars annually as tuition fees, according to the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Prof. Patrick Muobaghare, Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State has advised the Senate to drop the post-University Matriculating Examination debate. He described it as meddling in the universities’ internal affairs. The Unites Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultutal Organization recently rated African universities low in the usage of information technology in relation the other universities around the world. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Uyo Branch, has condemned the move by a group of legislators to abolish the post-UTME screening test. This was made known to newsmen by its Chairman, Mr Nwachukwu Anyim, at the end of a congress meeting held on Thursday in Uyo. A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has restrained the National Universities Commission, NUC, from going back on its initial accreditation of the Law programme of one of the private universities in Nigeria, Lead City University, Ibadan. Professor O. G Oshidin, vice chancellor of university of benin has called for more funds for federal universities in Nigeria. Professor Oshidin made the call during the opening ceremony of a retreat for governing council and principal officers of the University held at the Le Merdien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Lagos State University students, today, went on a protest against the planned increase in tuition fees by the state university authorities. The planned change is about 700% increanse in the present tuition fees which the students see to be overboard. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, richest man in Africa, recently made a donation of 50 million naira to Crescent University one of the muslim private Nigerian universities and also vows to build a 250 capacity hall of residence for the students of the institution. The Senior Staff of Nigerian Universities has described the plan by the federal government to remove fuel subsidy on fuel as not only scandalous, but an attempt to set Nigeria on fire. Abdussobur Olayiwola Salaam Ogun State chapter chairman at university of abeokuta addressing journalist, canvassed a mass action to protest president jonathan’s action which he described as ”the height of economic rascality”. The planned removal, according to him was a further attempt by the government to emasculate the masses to the advantage of the few rich elite in the society His words: “It is anti-people because it will add more to the prevailing hardship rampaging the land. Professor Chukwu Onyebuchi, Health Minister said that unaccredited medical schools are to go. He said that the increasing number of such schools is worrisome to the federal government. Professor Chuckwu said this when the National Association of College of Medicine (NACOM) visited him. Health Minister, Professor Chukwu went on to say any medical school not accredited after one year of take off should be shut down. 24 Nigerian students have been awarded scholarships worth £120,000 (about N31.5 million) to study in various schools in the United Kingdom by Preparation For Life (PFL), a student advisory service organisation. The students got £4,000 pounds each and would be studying various courses in the University of the West of England, Aston University, University of Derby, University of Hull, the University of Greenwich, Kaplan International Colleges, University of Leeds and University of Sunderland. The Nigerian Education Conference, Book Fair and Exhibitions, promoters of academic stability in Nigerian academic institutions, have conferred the “Best Managed University in Nigeria – 2011” award on Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). Faith University a private university situated in Delta State has been shut down by university regulatory bodies for allegedly operating illegally in Nigeria. Prof. Hope Eghagha , Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education said that the university was shut down because it has not been registered by the National Universities Commission, NUC. The Federal University of Petroleum Resources located in Efurrum, Delta State has not been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) after 4 yrs of establishment. The institution lacks basic academic infrastructures to train students. The Federal University of Petroleum which is the pioneer university of petroleum in Africa poorly funded has led to friction between the students and the authorities. The students recently discovered that the federal government owned school resources were not well managed by the authorities and the government has not taken any action to question the authorities in charge of the school. The final semester of the academic year (second semester) was disrupted at the university of Ibadan as a result of a strike by members of SSANU – Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, NASU – Non Academic Staff Union and NAAT – National Association of Academic Technologists over non – implementation of the 2009 agreements by the federal government of Nigeria. A similar reason that caused the previous 1 week warning strike by ASUU. Members of the various unions arrived at the school early and blocked the entrances of the university as a result prevented the staff and students of the university from getting into their offices and classrooms on time. Due to this occurrence, there was a long queue of vehicles trying to get into the university of Ibadan. A senior lecturer in the History Department, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr Victor Osaro Edo, who is also a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has faulted the call by the union to extend years of service for university lecturers. Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Ilorin, Kwara State, at the weekend, after attending a MMmM, Dr Edo said, "if I were to speak as an individual, I do not support that a civil servant should remain in service up till the age of 70." I have attended a private university and i can say that most of the things promised are not delivered or in fact none of the promises were delivered during my time in a private school. my advice is after high school do a good research about <a href="http://universitiesofnigeria.com">universities in nigeria</a>and then apply a federal school. I will also advice you to ask some students already in the school before deciding to attend any private or state university in nigeria. |
