If presidential and governorship elections are conducted simultaneously, it'll do either of two things:

1. It'll greatly reduce rigging
2. It'll push wicked politicians to go all out to rig because they don't want to lose.

Reps propose conducting all elections in one day in 2027

The House of Representatives has proposed that all five major elections in 2027 be conducted on a single day, in a sweeping reform outlined in the proposed Electoral Act 2025. If passed, the amendment would empower the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship and House of Assembly elections simultaneously.

The bill, sponsored by Bayo Balogun, Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, passed second reading in the House and seeks to repeal the Electoral Act No 13 of 2022. Among other key changes, the proposed law mandates a N50 million administrative fee for political associations applying for registration as political parties. It also sets spending limits for candidates, including N10 billion for presidential candidates and N3 billion for governorship aspirants.

Further provisions include the conduct of elections not earlier than 210 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the current officeholder’s term. Petitions arising from elections must be resolved within 90 days of filing. The bill also seeks to curb the frequent conduct of by-elections by allowing political parties to nominate replacements when lawmakers resign or die, provided the replacement is submitted to INEC within 60 days.

The proposed legislation outlines new rules for campaign financing, prohibiting donations exceeding N500 million from any individual or entity. It also criminalises false affidavits and misrepresentations by candidates, with penalties including fines up to N10 million or imprisonment.

The bill sets strict timelines for pre-election and election petition matters. Petitions must be filed within 21 days of result declaration, and pre-election suits within 14 days of the contested action. Appeals must be concluded within 60 days. The proposed law also bars courts from halting elections pending the resolution of legal disputes.

On the use of technology, the bill retains the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System for accrediting voters but is silent on the mandatory use of permanent voter cards. Voters will be allowed to present either a downloadable voter identification with a QR code or other recognised forms of ID.

Election results must be transmitted both electronically and manually from polling units to collation centres. Officers who violate this provision risk fines of at least N500,000 or six months imprisonment. Collation officers must also verify and confirm that the number of accredited voters and recorded votes match the data transmitted from polling units. Disputes during collation will be resolved using original results and accreditation records.

The bill also addresses internal party democracy and discipline, mandating the submission of party registers at least 30 days before primaries and barring the use of any register not submitted to INEC. Political appointees are prohibited from serving as delegates or being voted for in party conventions.

Candidates can challenge the submission of false information in affidavits by opponents. If a court determines that constitutional requirements were not met, the candidate and the sponsoring party will be disqualified.

To discourage baseless legal challenges, penalties of up to N10 million may be imposed on petitioners and their legal counsel if their suit falls outside the recognised grounds for contesting an election.

The bill emphasises that courts cannot declare as winner any candidate who did not fully participate in all stages of the election. It also exempts periods of national emergencies, disasters or war from the computation of legal timelines under the Act.

INEC will be required to issue certificates of return to nominated replacements without conducting by-elections, provided parties comply with the replacement procedure. Special voting arrangements will be introduced for security personnel, INEC officials, observers, journalists and ad-hoc staff who will vote on designated dates prior to the main election.

The proposed Electoral Act 2025 represents one of the most comprehensive electoral reforms in recent history, with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s political and electoral landscape.

Nollywood star and producer Femi Adebayo has opened up about the exact moment he chose acting over a career in law.

In an interview with Pulse, the actor revealed he was earning just N20,000 monthly as a lawyer before an acting gig changed everything.

“Acting was a hobby for me at the time,” he said. “But then I got offered N50,000 to act for just three days. Meanwhile, my monthly salary as a lawyer was N20,000. That was when I said, ‘Femi, this acting is your calling.’”

That moment made him fully embrace his passion, leaving law behind to pursue a career in entertainment—one that’s been shaped by his talent and the legacy of his father, veteran actor Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has hit back at Meta Platforms Inc, warning the tech giant that its threat to exit Nigeria will not erase its legal responsibilities or liabilities under the Nigerian law.

Meta said earlier today, May 3, that it “may be forced to effectively shut down the Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria in order to mitigate the risk of enforcement measures.”

Meta’s warning came after it lost a legal bid last week to overturn a ₦220 million fine imposed by the FCCPC for violations of data protection and consumer rights laws.

Reacting to Meta's threat, FCCPC, in a statement on Saturday, May 3, described Meta’s statement as “a calculated” move aimed at “inducing negative public reaction and potentially pressuring the FCCPC to reconsider its decision.”

FCCPC said that Meta threatening to leave Nigeria does not absolve the company of liabilities for the outcome of a judicial process.

“These infringements included denying Nigerians the right to control their personal data, transferring and sharing Nigerian user data without authorisation, discriminating against Nigerian users compared to users in other jurisdictions and abusing their dominant market position by forcing unfair privacy policies,” FCCPC wrote on X.

“Interestingly, Meta had been fined for similar breaches in Texas ($1.5b) and only recently was asked to pay $1.3 Billion for violating E.U. Data Privacy Rules. Elsewhere in India, South Korea, France and Australia, Meta had faced varying penalties for similar breaches. But Meta never resorted to the blackmail of threatening to exit those countries. They obeyed.”

INEC moves to legalise voting without PVC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed readiness to allow eligible Nigerians without Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote in the 2027 general elections, provided that the current electoral laws are amended to accommodate such a change.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, confirmed the commission's position in an interview with The PUNCH. He noted that while the electoral body is open to expanding voter access through the use of technology, it cannot proceed without legal backing.

“It is not our stand alone that is important,” Oyekanmi said. “Equally critical is what the subsisting law says. While the commission is favourably disposed to the recommendation by stakeholders—that PVCs alone should not be the only criterion for voting at an election—the law needs to be amended to reflect it.”

The development comes on the heels of remarks by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke during a quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in December 2024. Yakubu said that the commission was considering alternatives to PVCs to improve efficiency and reduce electoral fraud.

“The commission also believes that with the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, the use of the Permanent Voters’ Cards as the sole means of identification for voter accreditation on Election Day should be reviewed,” Yakubu said.

“Those who already have the PVCs can still use them to vote, but going forward, computer-generated slips issued to the voter or even downloaded from the Commission’s website will suffice for voter accreditation. This will not only save cost, it will also eliminate the issues around the collection of PVCs and the diabolical practice of buying up the cards from voters in order to disenfranchise them,” he added.

INEC's proposal has sparked conversations among electoral stakeholders and reform advocates, many of whom see the move as a step toward a more inclusive and technologically advanced electoral process. However, Oyekanmi emphasized that any significant procedural change must comply with the existing legal framework.

Education minister calls for NYSC to be extended to two years
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Education is proposing an extension of the national service duration from one to two years.

The proposal was made public in a statement issued on Saturday by the NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Caroline Embu.

The development was revealed following a visit by NYSC Director-General Olakunle Nafiu to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, in Abuja on Friday. The visit forms part of broader reform efforts aimed at tackling certificate racketeering and improving the integrity of the NYSC scheme.

In 2024, a federal investigation uncovered that approximately 22,789 Nigerians had submitted fake foreign degree certificates to enrol in the NYSC programme. This revelation triggered a nationwide crackdown and a series of reforms to sanitize the system.

Alausa highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts to digitise the verification process for foreign-trained Nigerian graduates. He also commended the NYSC for its digitisation of the mobilisation process, a move he said has significantly curbed certificate fraud.

The education minister reportedly advocated for the extension of the NYSC service year to two years, stating that it would allow for an expansion of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme for corps members. “You have done so well as an organisation. Let NYSC give people more opportunity to become job creators that will meet the needs of the country,” Alausa said during the meeting.

Responding to the proposal, the NYSC DG reaffirmed the scheme’s commitment to aligning with federal government directives. “We are also trying to reform the scheme to conform with the present national needs,” Nafiu stated.

He also called for the creation of a central database to track Nigerian youths travelling abroad for undergraduate studies. According to him, such a database would provide the government with a reliable record of students and help eliminate the prevalence of fake graduates.

Dr Tunji-Ojo stated this at a meeting with the Director General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Princess Zarah Audu in Abuja.

According to the Minister, travellers would still be able to apply online for short stay visas, with approvals being granted within 24 to 48 hours. He added that once approved, the visa will be sent to the applicant’s email, eliminating the need for a physical sticker upon arrival.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo said this upgrade builds upon the existing online approval system, streamlining the process and enabling travellers to receive their approvals ahead of time.
