FG targets sachet water reduction Listen 👂 on Podcast YouTube Watch & Subscribe ⬇️ https://youtube.com/shorts/HlMUgXTytu0?si=6Wfpccw0FRqBcOP8 The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) says Nigeria consumes more than 2.5 billion litres of sachet water every year, produced by over 32,000 manufacturers nationwide, a trend it says has worsened plastic pollution across the country. The Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja at the inception meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Child Project 11193, titled Circular Solutions to Plastic Pollution in Nigeria. Barikor said the project is designed to reduce the consumption of plastic sachet water while ensuring that Nigerians continue to have access to safe and affordable drinking water. He described the meeting as a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to tackle the environmental and public health challenges posed by plastic pollution. According to him, the widespread use of single-use plastic sachets has become both a convenience and a serious environmental burden. He noted that while sachet water has helped bridge gaps in access to potable water, it has also contributed to blocked drainage systems, flooding, ecosystem degradation, and threats to public health and biodiversity. “As you are aware, Nigeria consumes over 2.5 billion litres of sachet water annually, produced by more than 32,000 manufacturers across the country,” Barikor said. “While this has helped bridge gaps in access to drinking water, it has also resulted in severe environmental consequences.” He added that the project addresses the dual challenge of water access and plastic pollution, making it both timely and necessary. Barikor explained that the GEF Child Project represents a strategic intervention aligned with Nigeria’s environmental priorities and NESREA’s mandate to protect the environment for present and future generations. “The project adopts a holistic, circular approach—focusing not only on waste management, but on prevention, innovation, policy reform, and systemic change,” he said. In a goodwill message, Isabella Vanderbeck of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) described Nigeria as a key partner in global efforts to reduce plastic pollution. “Life without plastic is truly fantastic, let us hit the ground, let us do away with plastic,” she said. Also speaking, Evelyn Swain of the Global Environment Facility reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in reducing the use of single-use plastic water sachets while ensuring access to safe drinking water. “GEF is proud to support Nigeria in its journey to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic water sachets in Nigeria, while ensuring accessible and safe drinking water,” she said. Swain, a Senior Environmental Specialist and Plastic Reboot Coordinator at the GEF Secretariat, was represented by Anna Blanpain. Mrs Zuliat Mohammed, Chief Scientific Officer at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, said the ministry was ready to collaborate with NESREA to ensure the success of the project. She said the programme would help Nigeria reduce and eventually eliminate plastic sachet waste in the country. Copyright ©️ Dash Press Media

Starting January 2025, the government will begin a nationwide crackdown to sanitize the fintech space. The Key Takeaways: Seizures: Any POS terminal used by an unregistered business will be confiscated. Fintech Watchlist: Payment providers (like OPay, Moniepoint, etc.) that continue to service unregistered agents will be placed on a regulatory watchlist and face heavy sanctions. The Goal: To curb financial crimes, including fraud and untraceable ransom payments, by ensuring every terminal is tied to a registered business name. What You Need to Do: Register: If you haven't, register your business name via the CAC portal immediately. Upload: Submit your registration documents to your Fintech provider to avoid being deactivated. The Bottom Line: If you aren’t registered by January, you risk losing your terminal and your livelihood. Act now! Copyright ©️ Dash Press Media

Singer Johnny Drille speaks on how much Nigerian artists earn from streams compared to the UK Watch & Subscribe ⬇️ https://youtube.com/shorts/rg2qbuVHm9w?si=ZSwquY3mITs78YFA Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has opened up about how low streaming revenue from Nigeria affects artists financially. Speaking about the challenges of being an artist, Johnny Drille explained that musicians in Africa — especially Nigeria — don’t make much from streams because of the low streaming value. According to him, while 1 million streams from Nigeria may earn an artist around $300, the same number of streams from countries like the UK could bring in as much as $5,000. He said: “For an artist, it can be quite challenging early on. Streaming from Africa is not the best in terms of numbers. I hear that if your 1 million streams are from Nigeria, it’s probably like $300. But the same 1 million streams from the UK, for example, could be about $5,000.” Johnny Drille added that despite the struggle with streaming revenue, artists can make better money from live performances once their music starts gaining traction globally. He encouraged upcoming artists to stay focused and committed, saying: “It might be tough early on, but if you believe this is your path, just keep pushing. At some point, it will happen for you.”… Copyright ©️ Dash Press Media

Abuja–Kaduna train service to resume this week — NRC Watch & Subscribe ⬇️ https://youtube.com/shorts/xG6OoTYoQX8?si=b_gjqFsrsRkt2KDz The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the Abuja–Kaduna passenger train service will resume operations this week, following extensive repair and safety checks on the affected section of track at Asham. In a statement issued on Saturday, September 26, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed that while the exact resumption date and schedule will be released in the coming days, all necessary measures have been taken to restore the line and rolling stock to global safety standards. The service had been suspended after a derailment occurred on August 26, 2025. According to the corporation, since then it has worked “tirelessly to ensure both the infrastructure and rolling stock were restored to the highest safety standards.” As part of its passenger welfare commitment, the NRC disclosed that refunds have already been issued to 512 of the 583 passengers onboard the affected train, with efforts underway to complete payments for the remaining passengers. “The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of our esteemed passengers and assures the general public that their safety, comfort, and satisfaction remain our top priority. We also acknowledge the invaluable support of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, security agencies, the media, and all stakeholders during this period of recovery,” the statement read. The derailment, which occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 am, was the second incident at the same station within 13 months. Passengers described the aftermath as chaotic, with many scrambling to safety. Four passengers sustained serious injuries. NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, publicly took responsibility for the accident in a subsequent interview, while the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) later revealed that poor maintenance and a faulty track switch were central causes. The NSIB’s preliminary findings indicated that several previously damaged sleepers had been inadequately patched rather than fully repaired. It also found that the automatic switch mechanism at the station’s crossing point was unserviceable, forcing workers to operate it manually with a point clip, which was later discovered broken, compromising track integrity and causing the derailment. The report further highlighted systemic issues, including insufficient refresher training for NRC personnel, as well as the inaccessibility of essential tools and spare parts from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Despite these challenges, the NRC says resumption plans are now firmly in place, with a renewed pledge to prioritize safety as operations return on the vital Abuja–Kaduna corridor.
