I relocated to the United States about eight years ago. My relationship with my dad has been strained and continues to deteriorate.

Background:
I grew up in a lower-middle-class family with both my mom and dad working hard. Everything changed when my dad started earning significant money. His newfound wealth led to a lifestyle filled with parties, women, and alcohol (to be fair, he earned his money, so he had the right to spend it as he pleased). He built a hotel and was barely home afterward.

2010:
While I was in college, I wanted to leave Nigeria due to the incessant ASUU strikes. I told my dad I wanted to study abroad. Initially, he agreed and gave me the funds to start the process. I was admitted to a school in Ukraine and secured a visa, but he later said he couldn’t afford to send me abroad. This decision felt contradictory, as his lifestyle said otherwise. (To be fair, it’s his money, and he has the right to decide how to spend it.)

2016:
I got admitted to a master’s program in the U.S. and approached my dad for help again. He told me to "cut my coat according to my size" and said he couldn’t sell any of his properties for the sake of a child studying abroad. (Again, to be fair, he was right—he had already paid for my college tuition in Nigeria.) Around the same time, he married another wife.

On the other hand, my mom sold her only piece of land and some jewelry to give me half of my first semester's tuition. After involving family members, my dad reluctantly gave me ₦400,000, stating that was all he could afford. I thanked him for the support.

Fast Forward to Today:
I struggled and worked odd jobs to make ends meet, determined never to ask him for help again. Over time, I’ve become financially stable, secured a good job, and am now a permanent resident. I give my dad a monthly allowance and occasionally send more during festive seasons. My mom, on the other hand, gets spoiled with gifts, extra money, and I’ve even invited her to visit and spend time with me in the U.S.

Now, my dad is broke and has suggested I buy him a car and increase what I do for him, despite the fact that my parents are separated and he currently lives with his second wife. I’ve told myself I won’t go above and beyond for him, especially since he chose to prioritize his lifestyle and the new wife (who came with a stepson). I find it hard to reconcile his past decisions with his current expectations.

Many people reading your complain wish they have somebody to call “father” or “Daddy”. They have never spoken that word to a human being in their entire life especially to one who would even reluctantly contribute N400,000 to their education. I noticed you never mentioned he was not in support of your education in Nigeria. It’s just that he considered your sponsorship abroad as way beyond is Nigerian finance…the lifestyle you mentioned he lived can be relative in the sense that he is not spending dollars for his enjoyment but it is naira he was spending.

I have experienced that many people look rich driving big cars and wearing expensive clothes but their bank balance is red on reserve mode. Such is business certain business. I don’t know your dad character. I am just saying you may not have known the true nature of his finance cash flow at that time unless he told you.

Also You did not mention that your mom was independent of your dad’s finance. It may be that the land she sold and jewellery she sold came from him or is one way connected to his money unless otherwise. Maybe your dad gifted it to her and she sold it for your sake. Moreover, your dad may have still been paying her rent and taking good care of you guys so his finance may have been spread thin by committing to further expenses with high exchange rate.

I can not tell you if you are wrong or right, but what I can say is that it is not easy to be a real man. Real men don’t get heard sometimes.

My conclusion: if you can easily afford buying a car for your father without feeling it or breaking the bank, then be the pride of your father and don’t rob him of that fatherly pride. Many adults would kill to do same if they ever had someone to call father. You are a lucky person. Personal Vendetta ain’t worth it.

To add to your point. Anyone born in USA must pay tax on their income every year once they hit 18 whether they reside in USA or not. America run on double tax system by default which means if you are a citizen doing your business or work outside USA, you are a expat and must send back your tax else IRS will come after you. I am almost certain Davido could not escape paying US tax unless he renounce US citizenship. Then complainers should tell me why he shouldn’t participate in the country that collects his money without fail. Plus he sees his tax is being put in good use in a sustainable manner which is a thing to be proud about.

If we remember what happened to human beings in the Tower of Babel, how they became divided, we will understand that it is human nature to be divided from that time henceforth.

Even Jesus Christ himself prayed that his church will be united “that they may be one”. He knew this part of human existence is real. Just when we think there is unity then comes the little spark of division and then unity again. God constantly plants and uproots. God has been working for thousands of years. He never sleeps or tire.

It is not a matter of Christianity not meaning same line but a matter of people deciding to do their own bidding. We see this all through records of God’s dealing with the Israelites, the legitimate grandchildren and descendants of Abraham.

So Jesus gave no one the authority to abolish any form of falsehood rather what we are taught to do is concentrate on the SHEEP who are within the congregation of God but as for those who love deceit they will never ever accept correction! 2Timothy 3:13

The word of God does give us authority to correct one another in love thus by correcting, the false believe they have becomes abolished through the power of the Holy Spirit working in their heart.

If a teacher err and he stands to be corrected in love just as Apostle Peter accepted Apostle Paul’s correction, it does not make such teacher a false teacher. Like I have written in the article, humans are not 100% correct. This is why God was able to use Apostle Paul to correct Apostle Peter. While you may agree with all or some part of what I have written, let us be careful not to call a true servant of God whom God called to ministry false.

Corrections and changes can be done so the children of God walk in the path of truth. I do not condemn raising of fund in church to do God’s work. The concern is that the tithe collection is not the way it was done in the past even in Apostle Paul’s time for certain reasons. One of the reasons certainly is that it was designated for running of Jewish synagogues and gentiles were not obligated to tithe. Letter to the Hebrew church (Jewish church) mentioned tithe to emphasis that their messiah was indeed a Jew (of Judah) and beyond.

Now that the topic of tithe is introduced to the gentile church in this last days, it is evidently helping to divide the unified faith in Christ. They are still Jesus’ sheep and must be corrected in love. This is why corrections must be made so God himself would abolish it.

For example, there was a time in the Roman Catholic Church history when certain reverends collected money from penitent member that their sins might be forgiven. Such belief was abolished when God raised a man to protest about it stating the Bible says forgiveness and salvation is by faith alone and not by money we give. Though he was cast out of the church, God still worked in their hearts with the truth thus abolishing such error.

In the last decade, certain Protestant church group have unknowingly allowed teachings of marmon that originated from American soil creep into the church. They are carried away by what they call principles of giving and prosperity. God might have to raise a Martin Luther of the Protestant church to correct their errors because their Gospel as deviated from Christ alone to principles of marmon.

How did the church of Christ get to this point where pastors now preach saying

“Anyone who is not paying his tithe is not going to heaven, Jesus is the one collecting your tithe, If you don’t tithe, things will be tight for you, and You suppose to pay more than 10%”

It is written that Jesus Christ never gave himself to men because he knew them neither did the Berian church believe until they searched for the truth. Heresy can creep in anytime, but God show us his truth because he is good.

Our assurance of salvation is in Jesus Christ, in his death death and resurrection. No other works of men can save.

There are still those who believe men can be 100% correct in teaching the word of God. But it is not true. There are certain things the Holy Spirit directly teach without using men.

Apostle Paul had such teaching directly from the Holy Spirit and was able to correct Apostle Peter when Peter erred concerning is relations with the gentile church. Apostle Peter admitted his error and accepted the truth. Both were teachers of the word. So not all teachings must be taken hook line and sinker from a teacher.

We must rely on God’s Holy Spirit all the time even when we learn from his servants. He tells us what to accept and what not to in our spirit and conscience. It is written “God is greater than our conscience”.

My believe about giving to the church treasury. Do not give by being coerced or mandated by church leaders because God did not call them to tax the church of Christ like the government of this world does but to preach Christ. Give to the church treasury when God lays in your heart and as much as God leads you to give and cheerful in a manner that there will be enough left to distribute in the care of your household and *your widows* and your orphans. And when God leads, directly give to actual missionaries in the fields for they and their household are selected and sent out by the Holy Spirit.

You can call a non-denominational missionary ministry to indicate your interest in directly sponsoring one of their missionaries who are in parts of the world where people have never heard about Jesus Christ since they were born. If you are willing to or are lead to, please do. Ensure you check and verify before making donations so as not to get scammed. A reputable one I have always heard about since my days in the University is called Calvary Ministries CAPRO.

I was in RCCG church today and was shocked when the pastor talked about what Pastor E.A Adeboye mentioned. I never knew about it until today.

The pastor said they disagreed with their GO apology thus still stand on their believe that people will go to hell for not tithing. (Emphasis: disobedience).

Some people who believe in the 10% tithe are paying less than 10%. What’s the point of their believe. They are still bound by Judaism law because they seek to be righteous before God by their works.

Fathers of faith and God’s generals of old - William Seymour of Azusa street revival, Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, Charles Finney, Smith Wigglesworth, Maria Woodworth-ether etc all did not preach tithe nor did they pay tithes yet God used them powerfully to bring unbelievers into Christ. I don’t think all of them are in hell for not upholding the topic of gentile believers obeying the Jewish laws about Jewish 10% tithes into Synagogues.

Thus God will is to ensure none of his children hold false faith that they are righteous because they tithe or they are sinners because they do not tithe. We are redeemed by Christ and have been made righteous already by his blood. He became sin that we may be righteousness of God.

Anyone who must give should do so with purpose in God’s will and of a cheerful heart and in faith without being coerced into it.

How can I tell a white man to come to my church when my pastor says,added to his 20% tax paid to government, he should pay extra 10% and more. Pastors have made things difficult for evangelist and many will refuse to come to church because of money matter.

Truly many people in Africa where such preaching prevail will remain in poverty even if they have big faith. It is not a curse. It is fact.

Nigerians are used to poverty and being misled by those they look up to.

We are all human beings and can err.

After watching Pastor Adeboye say one should pay more than 10% of his already 20% taxed income to church treasury, I have just decided not to pay tithe anymore but focus on giving as I can and when God leads.

This is God’s will

You can pay 10% of all your 20% taxed income or gross income to church if you want to [cut out section for privacy] but I have decided not to because I am not led to.

But know that you are free not to pay such amount of money monthly because it is not a Jewish synagogue (temple) you are paying into as instructed to the Jewish people in Malachi. We are gentile believers in Christ.

We all want to live in abundance and riches. However, true abundance and riches comes from God. Many have sought to bribe God with ‘tithe’ to gain access to abundance yet they died in poverty. We are where we are today because of God’s mercy. Let no one deceive us with heretic preachings.

My recommendation is to give to Christ body the church when God leads and as much as he lay in your heart per time.

Thus you will have enough to use for care of your family and loved ones.

Do you have relevant people that matters in your contact group. These people might be those who help you financially from time to time as the economy bites hard. If you care about them not losing money to scammers, then this is for you. It is your responsibility to ensure you don’t become the reason they loss thousands or even millions of Naira all for sake of negligence. Also it is your responsibility to not get scammed via WhatsApp especially if you are on the giving end for loved ones.

Did you know a WhatsApp group gets compromised once a member’s account is hacked? It is advisable for admin of the group to Kick out any member account that has been hacked ASAP. Therefore, if you are sure a number has been hacked and you are in a mutual group, please notify the admin and other members of the group about the particular hacked account so they can block it individually. Note Whatever message you pass on the group will be seen by the hacker who will want to act fast, so ensure your warning is passed in direct message.

Now let’s go to my 5 tips that might help you and loved ones stay protected. This is how you might prevent getting scammed or hacked.

1. Never Share Code sent to your phone: You may be asked to share a number or code sent to your phone. Never share any number sent to your phone to anybody even if the person pressure you to tell them. That number might be the code that will remove WhatsApp from your phone and transfer it to the persons phone. If you share the number, your WhatsApp is gone. This apply to other aspect and not just WhatsApp. Never share or text back codes to anyone. The codes are usually 5 to 7 numbers (eg 528493) and are meant for only you to know.

2. Call first before sending money: If you eventually chat with anyone on Whatsapp or via any media and the person request for money to be sent to him or someone else’s bank account, make it an habit to call the person to verify it is the actual person you know. It is preferable you do not call via WhatsApp but do a normal call. The normal call might cost you small money. It is better to lose N200 recharge card on the call than to loss big amount of money.

3. Turn on 2 step verification: Turn on 2 step verification in your WhatsApp account settings. Add your email, then turn on 2 step verification.

4. Avoid clicking links as much as possible: Don’t click links you are not sure about. The link may be laced with virus or malware tool to hack into your phone so they can read your text messages. Technically, you download the malware just by simply clicking the link carelessly. If they do get exclusive access to your phone through this way, they will not need to ask you for the OTP code on your mobile phone because they can see it. Your 2 step verification will be bypassed and made useless. It is a sophisticated hack and scam technique.

5. Set profile picture to “My Contact” in privacy: The moment you know one of your contact or a member of a group has been hacked, I recommend, set your privacy profile picture section from “everyone” to “My contact” once you have blocked the number. This is to deter the scammers from making you a target. The hacker or scammer have no face, so should you. Don’t show them your face. I consider it an advantage game. Let them work so hard to visualise how you may look like. Whether you look rich and are worth being a target or you are one pauper. Don’t make their evil but someworth innovative work easy for them.

Bonus tip:

Delete transaction receipts or sensitive documents: Some folks are fond of sending bank transactions receipts or sensitive document via a backed up WhatsApp. The downside to it is that the hackers get everything when the account gets hacked. UNFORTUNATELY for those who send their nude pictures or videos to their long distant spouse or loved ones and have it backed up on their WhatsApp, they might find themselves on pornography websites if the hacker is not a gentleman. No hard feelings.
