I bumped into this article by our own Ada-Igbo, Adaobi Nwaubani, and I just can't restrain the hatred I bear for some of our Igbo parents. That our language is nearing extinction is because Igbo parents in their incenssant quest to westrnise their children, refuse them the ultimate benefit of engaging their language of identity. Often times, children are scolded or given harsh corrections by their parents whenever they speak their language. Here is a case that justifies this reality which is clearly ravaging our society and battering our identity as a people. Read here... "In our series of letters from African journalists, Nigerian novelist and writer Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani recalls how she was banned from speaking her mother tongue My parents forbade my local language, Igbo, from being spoken in our home when I was a child. Unlike the majority of their contemporaries in our hometown of Umuahia in south-east Nigeria, my parents chose to speak only English to their children. They also conversed between themselves in English, even though they had each grown up speaking Igbo with their own parents and siblings. On the rare occasion my father and mother spoke Igbo with each other, it was a clear sign that they were conducting a conversation in which the children were not expected to participate. Guests in our home adjusted to the fact that we were an English-speaking household and conformed, with varying degrees of success. Our live-in domestic staff were equally compelled to speak English. Many arrived from their villages unable to utter a single word of the foreign tongue, but as the weeks rolled by, they began to string complete sentences together with less contortion of their faces. Over the years, I endured people teasing my parents, usually behind their backs, for this decision. “They are trying to be like white people,” they said. Similar accusations were levelled against Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s former prime minister, when he replaced Chinese with English as the official medium of instruction in schools. But, as he explained in his autobiography, From Third World to First, “With English, no race would have an advantage… English as our working language has… given us a competitive advantage because it is the international language of business and diplomacy, of science and technology.” My parents seemed to share these convictions. Each time it was my turn to stand and read to my primary school class from our recommended Igbo textbook, the pupils burst into a giggling session at my placement of the wrong tones on the wrong syllables. Again and again, the teacher made me repeat the words. Each time, the class’ laughter was louder. My off-key pronunciations tickled them no end. But while the other pupils were busy giggling away, I went on to get the highest scores in Igbo tests. Always. Because the tests were written – they did not require the ability to pronounce words accurately. The rest of the class may have been relaxed in their knowledge of the language and so treated it casually, probably the same way a reckless Briton might treat his or her study of English. I, on the other hand, considered Igbo foreign and so approached the subject studiously. I also read Igbo literature and watched Igbo programmes on TV. My favourite was a comedy titled Mmadu O Bu Ewu?, which featured a live goat dressed in human clothing. Speaking Igbo was also banned in the boarding school I attended. The Federal Government Girls’ College, Owerri, was one of the country’s “Unity Schools” founded after the Nigerian civil war to promote integration among ethnic groups and to discourage divisions and tribalism. Local languages were part of the curriculum, but speaking them beyond the classroom was a punishable offence. And so, under the tutelage of some of the country’s best teachers, I continued my ardent study of Igbo, despite not having the opportunity to practise how to speak. By the conclusion of secondary school, I was confident enough in my knowledge of Igbo to register it as one of my subjects of choice for the university entrance exam. Everyone thought I was insane. Taking a major local language exam as a prerequisite for university admission was not child’s play. I was treading where expert speakers themselves feared to tread. I still meet many Igbos who have been speaking the language all their lives, but are unable to read and write it fluently. On the appointed day, presided over by supervisors in premises outside my school, less than six of us sat in the large hall, never mind that the exams were taking place in an Igbo town. When the results were eventually released, my score turned out to be good enough, when combined with my scores in the two other subjects I chose, to land me a place to study psychology at Nigeria’s prestigious University of Ibadan. In Ibadan, south-west Nigeria, home to the Yoruba ethnic group, I was free to speak Igbo at last. Far away from home, from the giggling voices, and from those who did not allow me to speak Igbo, I was finally free to express the words that had been bottled up inside my head for so many years – the words I had heard people in the market speak, read in books and heard on TV. Speaking Igbo in university was particularly essential if I was to socialise comfortably with the Igbo community there, as most of the “foreigners” in the Yoruba-dominated school considered it essential to be seen talking their language. “Suo n’asusu anyi! Speak in our language!” they often admonished when I launched a conversation with them in English. “Don’t you hear the Yorubas speaking their own language?” Thus, in a strange land, I finally became fluent in a mother tongue that I had hardly uttered my entire life. Today, few people can tell from my pronunciations that I grew up not speaking Igbo. “Your wit is even sharper in Igbo than in English,” my mother insists. These days, she enjoys it when I gossip with her in Igbo, although I still can’t get myself to speak the local tongue with my father who, despite being a typical Igbo man in many ways and a titled chief, has never regretted choosing English over Igbo. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how God made him build a church during his incarceration at Yola Prison and later won the souls of several inmates including a notorious robber/murderer who later became a pastor with Baptist church. Speaking at the Shepherdhill Baptist Church in Lagos, last Sunday, during a Thanksgiving Service to mark his 80th birthday, Obasanjo called on Nigerians to work for God no matter the circumstances they find themselves. “One, God made me to build a church,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “It’s very unusual, I asked the authorities for land, they were reluctant, but eventually they gave me land and immediately we started getting donations. “It was started before I left Yola. Wherever you are, you can still be useful to the work of God.” Obasanjo said he also got approval from prison authorities to farm while in detention and he cultivated “enough beans to feed all the inmates and warders.” When he was transferred to the Kirikiri Prison in Lagos, Mr. Obasanjo said he became the prison pastor and won several souls for God. "There was a boy whom they had introduced to me, his nickname was Baba Ali,” the former president said. “Baba Ali was the head of the armed robbers in the North. And if you were an armed robber and you came to prison, you must first of all go and pay homage to him. If you were going out, you must go to him and ask for instruction on what to do next. “So I called Baba Ali one day and said, ‘You are not coming to fellowship, I want you to be coming to the fellowship.’ And he said, ‘Baba, don’t worry me, don’t worry me at all because God can never forgive me. I have killed so many people in my life, I have drunk the blood of so many people, I have eaten the flesh of so many people and God will never forgive me, so don’t waste your time about me.'” Mr. Obasanjo said he left Baba Ali for a while, and then returned later to continue his evangelism. “I went back and said, ‘Baba Ali, you know all you said that you are a murderer, whether you killed only one person or a thousand people, you are a murderer; but you have forgotten that Moses was a murderer but God used him to bring the people of Israel out of Egypt? “David was a murderer but God called him a man after my heart. By the time I was leaving the prison, I told Baba Ali that if he was able to make it and he would like to go to Bible school, I would send him to Bible school.” Baba Ali was released from prison two years after Mr. Obasanjo, the former president said, by which time he had been elected Nigeria’s president. “It took him two years to get through to me, when he got to me, I reminded him of our agreement and he said he was ready to go to the Bible school. “So I sent him to the seminary, Baba Ali spent two years in the seminary. Today, he is a pastor of a Baptist Church. What is more? Baba Ali’s junior brother took after him and has also become a pastor" Credti: PREMIUM TIMES http://igbobia.com/?q=i-built-a-church-and-won-souls-for-god-while-i-was-in-prison-olusegun-obasanjo-claims.html

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, today, Monday, warned against any attempt to try its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu under Sharia law, insisting that doing so amounted to continuing what it described as the ongoing crime against pro-Biafra groups in Nigeria. Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan IPOB media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, in a statement in Awka, likened what the pro-Biafra groups were going through, to what the people of Biafra went through during the 1967 -1970 civil war that claimed the lives of many people, mainly Christians. Describing the alleged move to try Kanu and others under Sharia law, Powerful observed that, even in the predominantly Moslem part of Northern Nigeria, nobody had been tried secretly under Sharia law since the creation of Nigeria by the British merchants in 1914 and wondered why Nnamdi Kanu and other Christians in the southern part of Nigeria should be exposed to such trial. He wondered why the United Nations and other world leaders had decided to keep quiet over the matter concerning the IPOB leader, despite the fact that the United Nations had in its charter a provision for the right of the indigenous people to have their self determination. Being known for his assertiveness in matters of national importance and speaking up against the injustices the federal government of Nigeria has so far, metted out against innocent IPOB members and pro-Biafra agitators which have left many dead and the IPOB leaders, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others locked up in jail, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has yet again, called on Nigerian government to accord the agitators their right to seek for self-determination, while calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, reportedly 74years old, to reveal his health condition after spending nearly two months in Britain on medical leave. While speaking in an interview with AFP at Paris Book Fair weekend, Soyinka also said "indigenous people had right to assert themselves as a distinct people, even within a political and geographical zone anywhere in the world." On Buhari's health he said: “He’s ill, there’s no question, and I wish for heaven’s sake that people in public positions would just be honest. Illness is part of our existence. Buhari owes it to the nation and I don’t know why he and his advisors are being so coy about it,” Soyinka said. Soyinka, who also noted that US President, Donald Trump, exploited “latent xenophobia” to reach the White House, said a people had a right to agitate for self- autonomy within a geographical expression. He was obviously reacting to the agitation for declaration of independent state of Biafra in the South East of Nigeria. He said: “It’s not the real estate for me that defines a nation or a people, no, it’s a history, a culture. What is a crime within an artificial entity like Nigeria? You have states being created which are not viable.” Biafra unsuccessfully fought for independence in a brutal three-year civil war — during which Soyinka was imprisoned for nearly two years over allegations of espionage. With the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested in October 2015, more demonstrations, rallies and awareness have surged greater than expected. In many occasions, Security forces have had to use fierce restrictions to constraint the agigators who would march-out in intimidating numbers which often than not, ends bloody. The military denied the evidences by Amnesty International in November of how they killed some 150 Biafra protesters in the past year. Calling for the Biafran agitators to adopt peaceful means in actualising their aim, Soyinka said: “I cannot accept the notion that people have a right to kill other people because they want to assert their identity… It it doesn’t cost anything to recognise it.” Recall, IPOB threw its support behind Trump’s presidential campaign in the belief he would recognise their independence movement. Soon after Britons voted to leave the European Union in a referendum last July, the group pushed for its own version of “Brexit” from Nigeria that it dubbed “Biafrexit”. Soyinka, reacting to President Donald Trump's attitude to non-American indigenes, said Trump exploited “latent xenophobia” to reach the White House, decrying the erection of walls, especially in people’s minds, anywhere in the world. He said: “He played to a latent xenophobic streak which exists in all societies including mine,” said Soyinka, who renounced his US green card upon Trump’s victory in November over the Republican’s anti-immigrant rhetoric. When I see that kind of conduct… to gain power, I’m completely revolted.” Soyinka, who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1986, said further: “To me a horrible moment was to watch hundreds of thousands of people actually applauding when (Trump) uttered these sentiments” during the election campaign. “I’m against the erection of walls, especially in people’s minds,” the white-haired professor added. I’ve never made any bones about it, whether it’s happening in Nigeria” or elsewhere.” Credit: Vanguard http://igbobia.com/?q=biafrans-have-the-right-to-agitate-for-independenceipob-have-committed-no-crime-prof-wole-soyinka CC: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Stephanie Okereke-Linus, nollywood actress, was on Wednesday, unveiled as the Regional Ambassador for Maternal Health in West and Central Africa Region of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole who was represented by Mr Greg Izuwa, the Deputy Director, Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health in Lagos. According to him, she has been found worthy in character and in learning. "We take that to what she is going to do as the ambassador. "She went through rigorous screening before she was appointed. “She has already been appointed, but we are now making the general public to know she is now the regional ambassador in West and Central Africa,’’ the minister said. Stephanie Okereke, in accepting the honour, said motherhood is often a positive and fulfilling experience, but for thousands of women in sub-Saharan Africa, it is associated with suffering, ill health and even death. “As a woman and as a mother, I believe every woman has right to be beautiful, every woman has the right to health, and every woman has the right to support their children to achieve their potential. “It pleases me to know that these concerns are encapsulated in UNFPA’s mandate to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. “When I produced the movie Dry, I told the story of millions of girls in Africa who are forced to be child brides. “I encapsulated in Halima’s tears, the sorrow, pain and health complications that arise from marrying too early and getting pregnant too soon,’’ Stephanie Okereke said. The ambassador said that two years after the film’s production, she has not stopped raising her voice or using her platform to advocate for the rights of women and adolescent girls and advocating their right to equality, education and access to reproductive healthcare and information, including access to family planning. “I am honoured to partner with UNFPA to create an enabling environment for women, girls and every young person to fulfill their potential. “I will work closely with the fund to draw attention to the work that still needs to be done across the region to increase universal access to comprehensive sexual reproductive health services and information. “This is to stop women from dying in the course of bringing forth new life, to empower women and girls to choose freely and for themselves,’’ she said. http://igbobia.com/?q=stephanie-okereke-linus-made-unfpa-ambassador-for-west-and-central-africa-photos.html-0

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described as false, a statement credited to the Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State that Nnamdi Kanu, at a stage in his struggle, insulted Igbo leaders, adding that “the bitter truth, they did not want to hear" which Kanu has been telling him and the federal government of Nigeria is what he regarded as insult IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, Awka, in a statement released in Awka, Anambra State, said the reason people like the IMO State governor were propagating lies against Kanu was because IPOB had said that the All Progressives Congress under President Muhammadu Buhari had a mission to Islamise Nigeria. Their press statement read in part “It is well known to everyone in Nigeria, both the government, that they don’t like to hear simple truth and other things that is eating deep into the contraption called Nigeria. "Mazi Nnamdi Kanu propagates the truth to the whole world which people with good conscience around the globe understood and nicknamed him the prophet of our time because almost his teachings and prophecies on Radio Biafra have come to pass. "He prophesied that the APC party led by Major General Muhammadu Buhari was coming to Islamise the country through their brothers in the guise of cattle rearers/ herdsmen and that they would be getting support from their people in the Nigerian security agencies especially the soldiers who will protect them. "Today, the islamisation agenda is ongoing in the country without any hindrance. Since the killing in Agatu Benue State, Uzouwani Enugu State, Southern Kaduna and the killing of unarmed peaceful members of IPOB, there was no official pronouncement against the killings from Nigeria government and APC. "These murderous agents in the guise of cattle rearers in every part of the country killing people, raping women and girls and destroying farmland everyday without any arrest proves Mazi Nnamdi kanu rights and also proves that they are being supported by the government in power. "That was what IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu preached against not what some politicians understood”. "Kanu also said that you may think they are coming to in prove the economy, but they are coming to position their people in all the security agencies for total Islamisation of the country”. IPOB described as unfortunate that politicians, like Okorocha, could not see beyond their eyeglasses the hidden agenda “in the contraption called Nigeria”. It maintained that the best thing that could happen to Nigeria now was to allow those desirous to have their own sovereignties to go their ways. A member of the legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Johnmary Jideobi has written President Muhammadu Buhari on the continued disobedience of court order as it concerned the release of the IPOB leader. Jideobi, in the letter, said that by constitutional structuring and operation of Nigerian laws, the Department of State Service (DSS) and all military and para-military agencies were under the president’s ultimate control and command as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and should therefore react when laws were flouted. He recalled that the Federal High Court had, on December 17, 2015, delivered a ruling on the application brought by Kanu, adding that in the said ruling, a sacred order was solemnly pronounced against the DSS to the effect that Kanu should be released unconditionally, having been admitted to bail. Jideobi said: “The decisions of the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, a High Court and of all other courts established by the Nigerian Constitution shall be enforced in any part of the Federation by all authorities and persons, and by other courts of law with subordinate jurisdiction to that of the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, a High Court and those other Courts. “The discernible constitutional duty that has crystallized on your shoulders as eventuating from the provision of the law is to enforce the decisions of the Federal High Court, such as the one made by Justice Ademola J. on the 17th December, 2015. ”Obedience to orders of courts is fundamental to the peace and stability of the Nigerian nation. The ugly alternative is a painful recrudescence of triumph of brute force or anarchy, a resort to our old system of settlement by means of bow and arrows, machetes and guns. “Disobedience to an order of court should, therefore, be seen as an offence directed not against the personality of the Judge who made the order, but as a calculated act of subversion of peace, law, and order in Nigeria.. “Obedience to every order of court is a duty which every citizen who believes in peace and stability of the Nigerian State owes to the nation. To allow court orders to be disobeyed would be to tread the road toward anarchy. “If orders of the court can be treated with disrespect, the whole administration of justice is brought into scorn…If the remedies that the court grants to correct wrongs can be ignored, then, there will be nothing left for each person, but to take the law into his own hands “The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, despite a subsisting order of court to the contrary, has satisfied all the ingredients of the definition ascribed to a contemnor who our Supreme Court adjudges to be an anarchist, terminator of democracy and enemy of order, peace and stability of Nigeria. Indeed, this is a shameful toga that is most unworthy of any occupant of the number one office in our Republic as ordained by our Constitution. “This is primitive rape of our democracy and unrestrained slide into tyranny and impunity, which all along we thought had been buried seven months ago. “No matter how intimidated and scared a people might be, it will necessarily get to a point where they will be compelled to protest to their dreaded king even if it means covering their faces with baskets in so doing.” Jideobi urged the president to objectively appreciate the issues at stake and develop the courage to retrace his discomforting unconstitutional steps on the issue of the continued detention of Kanu despite the court ruling granting him bail unconditionally. Nollywood actress-turned-pastor Eucharia Anunobi, in a message she released on her instagram page stated that it is only hardwork that guarantee success. She drew instances from the bible to explain her position. According to Eucharia, who also admonished we follow the precepts of God in whatever we do, no amount of miracle from any pastor, prophet or whoever can bring lasting success. One must need to work hard and pray as well. She said: "The Bible speaking in Romans 8 : 37 says - Nay , in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us . Hallelujah . The love of God for us is showcased in His teaching us to follow His examples . Follow His modus operandi . You will ask , what are His modus operandi or examples ? . He feed the poor . He healed the sick . He changed water to wine . He rebuked the deaf and dumb spirits . He loosened the tongue that was tied . He never condemned . He mingled with everyone . He ensured no crumbs was wasted . He was zealous about His fathers business . He explained mysteries to His disciples . He endured mockery , pain and betrayal and He PRAYED . If all the above are examples of His love for us and modus operandi . We can see inherent in all the above are the operations of a doctor , creative person ( actors , musicians , writers , painters etc ) pastor , NGO founder ,bizman , accountant etc . Beloved ones , you can't rule your world and be celebrated if there's nothing you're doing with your hands and your brains . You have to put your hands to the plough Don't be deceived by senseless messages of you receiving strange money you never laboured for . Don't be deceived by any one calling out your phone number or the name of your village or dead relatives . Until you actively learn a skill or go through training , and be gainfully employed , you will continue to be oppressed by poverty and never be celebrated Now if you're a minister and you have no work , to generate money for your upkeep and run your ministry - church work , you had better reconsider your stand . Our God is not a magician : go and read what He has said in Genesis 3 : 19 . We become conquerors over all trials , when we seek to be educated , when we seek the right medical advice / solutions to our ailments other than sitting at home and watching that disease ravage our bodies , we become powerful and great preachers when we become knowledgeable to feed our members with seasoned pastures ( knowledge ) - Read Malachi 2 : 7. We become brilliant students , when we dedicate time to our studies . We become adorable husbands and wives when we treat our spouse's lovingly .
