The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is reportedly considering a new equity partnership arrangement that could hand Chinese investors a majority stake in the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries as part of efforts to rehabilitate and reposition the facilities commercially. According to reports, the proposed deal may give Chinese partners up to 51 per cent equity ownership under an arrangement similar to the model used by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), where investors participate in governance and long-term operations. The development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NNPC and Chinese firms Sanjiang Chemical Company Limited and Xinganchen Industrial Park Operation and Management Co. Ltd during a meeting held in Jiaxing City, China, on April 30, 2026. The agreement was signed by NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, alongside executives from the Chinese companies. Sources familiar with the arrangement disclosed that the proposed partnership goes beyond ordinary refinery rehabilitation contracts and may involve long-term operational participation and joint management of the refineries. The planned collaboration reportedly covers: * Completion of rehabilitation work at Port Harcourt and Warri refineries * Operations and maintenance services * Capacity expansion and profitability improvements * Petrochemical and gas-based industrial projects around refinery locations NNPC officials stated that the goal is to transform the refineries into commercially sustainable assets capable of meeting cleaner fuel production standards and improving operational efficiency. Speaking after the signing ceremony, Ojulari described the agreement as a major milestone in efforts to revive Nigeria’s struggling refineries. “The MoU is a significant step on the journey towards identifying potential technical equity partner(s) to restart and expand NNPC’s refineries,” he said. Industry experts say the arrangement may reflect concerns about previous refinery rehabilitation efforts and the need for technically experienced investors to ensure long-term sustainability. The Executive Secretary of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria, Clement Isong, described the proposed model as innovative, arguing that investors with equity stakes are more likely to ensure the facilities operate efficiently because they would directly benefit from profits. The move could significantly deepen Chinese involvement in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum and gas sector if negotiations progress into binding commercial agreements. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/nnpc-considers-giving-chinese-investors.html

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Aina, a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, will succeed Is-haq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure is expected to end on July 31, 2026. The announcement was made on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the Presidency, Aina will become the youngest Registrar in JAMB’s history, as he is set to turn 40 in July. He had earlier made history as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering at the age of 39. Professor Aina studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom before obtaining a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. The Presidency also noted that Aina has extensive experience in technology, examination systems, and institutional reforms, having worked with examination bodies such as NECO and NABTEB on ICT systems and examination integrity. He reportedly began his relationship with JAMB during his National Youth Service, where he gained early experience in national admissions and educational data systems. According to the statement, President Tinubu expects the new registrar to build on the achievements of his predecessor and further modernize the operations of the examination body. The appointment has already sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians discussing the significance of a relatively young academic taking charge of one of the country’s most important educational institutions. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/tinubu-appoints-39-year-old-professor.html

Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has blamed late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, for the collapse of the historic Aburi Accord of 1967, describing his actions as deliberate attempts to derail peace efforts before the Nigerian Civil War. The revelations were contained in Gowon’s newly released 859-page autobiography titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, particularly in Chapter Nine, “Aburi and Our Road to Nowhere.” In the book, Gowon accused Ojukwu of attending the Aburi peace meeting in Ghana with pre-planned positions while allegedly misrepresenting the outcome of the discussions to people in the Eastern Region after the meeting. According to Gowon, Ojukwu repeatedly frustrated attempts by the Supreme Military Council to peacefully resolve the political crisis that followed the 1966 coups. “Ojukwu deliberately and effectively thwarted every effort we made to amicably resolve all vexing national issues,” Gowon wrote. The former military ruler also claimed Ojukwu privately mocked him as a “Bible-carrying” officer who would never go to war. “He only saw me as a Bible-thumping ‘Jack’ who would pick up his Bible and pray rather than stand up to fight,” Gowon stated in the autobiography. Gowon further alleged that while peace talks were ongoing, Ojukwu was secretly building up arms in preparation for conflict. According to him, intelligence reports at the time suggested the Eastern Region was strengthening its military capabilities before the eventual declaration of Biafra. The former Head of State claimed Ojukwu later openly boasted about the Eastern Region possessing one of the strongest armies in Africa at the time. The Aburi Accord meeting, held in Ghana in January 1967, was initially seen as a major attempt to prevent civil war and rebuild trust among Nigeria’s military leaders after the political crisis of 1966. However, Gowon argued that Ojukwu later gave a different interpretation of the agreement to Eastern Nigerians, creating confusion and deepening tensions across the country. He also revealed that despite implementing major concessions through Decree No. 8, which decentralized power significantly, Ojukwu rejected the arrangement because it contained a clause against secession. The Nigerian Civil War eventually broke out in July 1967 after the Eastern Region declared independence as the Republic of Biafra, leading to one of the deadliest conflicts in Nigerian history. Gowon’s latest comments are expected to reignite debates about the true events surrounding the Aburi Accord and the origins of the Nigerian Civil War. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/gowon-blames-ojukwu-for-failure-of-1967.html

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has sparked conversations after declaring that Nigeria’s tourism sector is collapsing not because of a lack of ideas, but because governments fail to sustain projects after leaving office. Speaking at the International Tourism Summit 2026 organised by the Oyo State Government, Fayemi said many tourism initiatives across Nigeria die immediately political administrations change, leaving behind abandoned projects and wasted opportunities. According to him, Nigeria’s “tourism graveyard” is filled with brilliant ideas that were never properly institutionalised. “The graveyard of our country’s tourism is not littered with bad ideas. It is littered with good ideas that were never institutionalised or carefully executed,” Fayemi said. The former governor explained that tourism has become one of the biggest economic drivers globally, helping countries create jobs, attract foreign investors, improve infrastructure, and promote culture. However, he said Nigeria has failed to maximise those opportunities because leaders focus more on temporary political achievements instead of building lasting systems. Fayemi stressed that sustainable tourism can only work when governments create policies and institutions strong enough to survive political transitions. Drawing from his time as governor, he recalled that Ekiti State had only two functioning hotels when he assumed office in 2010 despite possessing major tourist attractions like: • Ikogosi Warm Springs • Arinta Waterfalls • Hills of Okemesi He described them as “neglected treasures” with massive economic value that remained largely untapped for years. Meanwhile, Seyi Makinde also spoke at the summit, assuring investors that his administration was building tourism structures capable of surviving beyond his tenure. Makinde revealed that Oyo State had already signed a 15-year concession agreement with SystemSpecs for the management of Bower’s Tower as part of efforts to strengthen private-sector participation in tourism development. The comments from both leaders have now reignited debates online, with many Nigerians asking the same question: Why do government projects in Nigeria disappear once a new administration takes over? https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/nigerias-tourism-graveyard-is-full-of.html

The African Democratic Congress has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections after screening more than 70 governorship aspirants across Nigeria. The screening exercise, which took place in Abuja, attracted politicians and former government officials from several states including: • Lagos • Rivers • Delta • Adamawa • Nasarawa • Plateau • Bauchi • Zamfara • Benue • Jigawa Party members and aspirants reportedly praised the exercise, describing it as transparent, professional, and fair. Big Political Names Participate Among those screened were several notable political figures including: • Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour • Abubakar Malami • Mohammed Jibrilla • Great Ogboru • Mohamed Onawo The party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Queen Okiyi, confirmed that over 70 governorship aspirants had already been screened, with more expected afterward. “Exercise Was Fair And Professional” Several aspirants commended the screening panel for conducting a credible process. Senator Mohamed Onawo described the exercise as “thorough and fair,” saying the panel asked important questions and carefully reviewed documents. Former Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour also praised the professionalism of the committee, saying strong internal processes help political parties avoid future legal problems. Former Adamawa governor Mohammed Jibrilla, popularly known as Bindow, equally described the process as transparent and intellectually engaging. ADC Positioning Itself For 2027 Political observers say the ADC appears to be positioning itself as a stronger alternative ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as internal crises continue to affect some major political parties in Nigeria. Some aspirants argued that the growing dissatisfaction within larger parties could create opportunities for the ADC to expand its political influence nationwide. The party also announced new committees to oversee its presidential and governorship primaries. Former Cross River governor Liyel Imoke was appointed chairman of the presidential screening committee, while former Kwara governor Abdulfatah Ahmed will head the presidential election committee. Nigerians Watching Closely As preparations for the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum, many Nigerians are closely watching whether smaller political parties like the ADC can truly challenge the dominance of bigger parties in the country. With more politicians reportedly considering alternative platforms, analysts believe the coming months could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/adc-rising-party-screens-over-70.html

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has asked Nigerians demanding an investigation into the N135.6m cash donation made by the senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District, Kaka Lawan, to All Progressives Congress officials in the state as Sallah gift, to submit a formal petition to the agency. The anti-graft agency said it would only act based on facts and official complaints, not social media outrage or speculation. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated this while reacting to public criticism that followed the senator’s distribution of cash to APC executives across his constituency ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. “Anybody who feels that he has contravened the law or is suspected to have contravened the law should write a petition to the EFCC and the commission will look into it,” Oyewale said. “It is not enough to be making commentaries on social media. The EFCC works with facts and not speculations,” he added. The controversy began after an aide to the senator, Usman Alkali, announced in a Facebook post that Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan distributed N135,650,000 to APC executives in Borno Central as Sallah packages. According to the aide, the donation was made to support party officials during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration and to appreciate them for their commitment to the party. “This is the third time the senator has given such a donation since becoming a member of the National Assembly,” Alkali reportedly stated. The development sparked reactions online, with several Nigerians calling on the EFCC to investigate the source and legality of the funds, while others defended the senator’s action as political empowerment and festive support. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/efcc-asks-nigerians-to-submit-petition.html

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has declared that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force is over, promising reforms aimed at building a more transparent and accountable police system. Speaking during a visit to the Edo State Police Command in Benin on Friday, the IGP said officers involved in misconduct would now face serious consequences. Disu referenced a recent case where a police officer allegedly shot a civilian who was not resisting arrest, describing the incident as a clear example of impunity. “That’s impunity. You arrested somebody who was not struggling with you, brought him out in daylight and shot him,” he said. According to the IGP, the officers involved were immediately tried, dismissed from the force and would face prosecution in court. He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force was entering a new phase focused on discipline, accountability and professionalism. “The era of impunity is over. We have to build a new Nigerian Police Force,” Disu stated. The police boss also promised to improve the traffic warden unit after officers complained about years of poor recruitment and lack of support. Meanwhile, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, appealed for more logistics and tactical support to strengthen security operations across the state. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/era-of-impunity-is-over-igp-disu-warns.html

The Federal High Court in Abuja has criticised the delay in prosecuting a suit seeking to disqualify former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election. Justice Peter Lifu, who presided over the matter on Friday, imposed a N1m fine on the plaintiff, Johnmary Jideobi, and his counsel, Ndubuisi Ukpai, over what the court described as lack of diligence in handling the case. The judge said the conduct of the plaintiff caused unnecessary delay in a matter with political implications that required accelerated hearing. According to the court, the plaintiff failed to properly serve key defendants, including the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney-General of the Federation, despite the suit being filed since October 2025. Justice Lifu noted that political matters should be treated with urgency in line with judicial policy. “I have taken judicial notice of INEC’s timetable. The duty of this court is to ensure political cases are given accelerated hearing and disposed of expeditiously,” the judge stated. The court ordered the plaintiff to serve all pending court processes on INEC and the Attorney-General of the Federation within two hours. The judge also directed the second and third defendants to file their responses before 11am on May 18, 2026. Justice Lifu subsequently adjourned the matter till May 18 for hearing of the substantive suit and pending applications. The plaintiff, Johnmary Jideobi, is seeking a court order restraining former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election and preventing INEC from accepting or publishing his name as a candidate. During proceedings, counsel to Jonathan, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), criticised the plaintiff for repeatedly delaying the matter and urged the court to dismiss the suit. However, counsel to the plaintiff later apologised for arriving late to court, claiming their vehicle broke down on the way. https://www.dobblog.online/2026/05/court-fines-plaintiff-n1m-in-jonathan.html
