The journey has been so interesting. Very interesting. I never thought it would be this possible. I'm forever honoured and humbled for the opportunity by God....how time flies cool

I'm not worth any of the glory. I am indebted of praise to God and the Holy spirit

Thank you @everyone
EducationFrom Uncertainties To Distinctions: A Brief Event Of My Preclinical Journey by Dawson126(op):
I didn’t come from Medicine. My first degree was outside the medical sciences. So walking into Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, and preclinical aspects of Community Medicine felt like learning a new language.

The training in Nigeria doesn’t apologize. 10 hours daily – 6 hours lectures, 4 hours practicals. Weekends most times are not yours. New concepts every day, most times inviting the previously done concepts. Days with no fund for food or upkeeps. I was shortlisted for a scholarship but age cut me out by the review committee. Then remote work entered the mix. I learned to shuffle deadlines with dissections. Classes and practicals sometimes were brutal. Jesus held me through.

65% pass rates for first Anatomy in-course. MBBS 200L promos with 0.09% pass rates (about 5 in every 50 students at first sitting). Negative marking. "Steeplechase"- is real and crazy. 200+ MCQs in limited time. Why? The rationale is brutal but clear: doctors can’t guess at bedside. Patients don't call before hand they'd be sick. Holistic clinical decisions when other voices speak from allied health fields. There must be a coordinator, a conductor of an orchestra so noice is turned to harmony. You are trained as a leader. Negative marking trains precision. Volume + time pressure simulates emergency decision-making. It filters for stamina.

Class of 75+ reduced to 60+ after 100L by months to MBBS Part I, it was 50+. By days to the exams, 1 voluntary withdrawal. It was crazy.

My turning point for Histology was YouTube. A lecture series on Human Histology by Prof. Christiana E. Howard of the Oregon State University Medical School. I subscribed and replayed every slide. Practice like I should just become a histopathologist in few months. Soon, I was noticed. When labels fell off in lab and second opinions were needed, I was called. That obsession for Anatomy earned me a body for personal dissection from the HOD. I stayed overtime in the morgue and dissection room, becoming friends with staff because seeing beats memorizing. And more knowledge comes from these people. Experience beats.

My anchor was the Holy Spirit. I prayed and worshipped before every study session. The human body became a masterpiece for me, a sight to see the wonders of God. That peace and grace gave me speed. With God's help, I covered some texts:
1. Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry– Murray et al.
2. Biochemistry for Medical Students – Vasudevan et al.
3. Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology
4. Sembulingam’s Essentials of Medical Physiology
5. Last’s Anatomy – Chummy Sinnatamby
6. Gray’s Anatomy by Henry Gray– 20th ed 1920. Very old textbook with old terminologies but I enjoyed it
7. E.t.c

The mock MBBS Part 1 came. I came out overall best across all subjects with distinctions. Time for main exam, performance retained. “Distinction viva” means an oral exam only top scorers face – external examiners test if you truly understand, not cram. God helped me impressed the Biochemistry and Physiology externals. The Anatomy external, permit me to say, erroneous thought I was playing “too smart” and grilled me harder, nearly lost my feet. Our Biochemistry lecturers, mostly non-medical doctors, favourably appraised my approach. The HOD of Physiology asked in front of examiners: “Who taught you this well?” I pointed to him.

Verdict came sometimes later: I retained 2 distinctions out of the 3 subjects. Only a quarter of few invited retained the various distinction they had. Something that took roughly 8-9hours of meticulous drilling for us.

The lesson as a once outsider: Medicine isn’t just a degree. It is talk and do (if there is anything like that) as in now, you've poured out all the theories, now take instruments, let me see your skills. That’s why postgraduate training is through fellowships – West African College, National Postgraduate Medical College. It’s apprenticeship, like everywhere else in the world. Skills, not just papers alone. But that level of commitment only happens when there’s financial dignity, something to at least make people to be willing to be committed to this rigor. To rush it. Then this rigor must be funded to have competent doctors. I now understand why the labour market operated how it does for these guys. As someone with some background in Economical sciences, the more demanding the job, the more the funding. We can see this with oil and gas folks. Even with that it still takes love and respect for humans. There are many things to do with less effort and may still profit same or more than what Medicine gives or promises.
And my view changed too, I believe the highly intelligent ones are in Mathematical sciences and Computing - but Medicine uses Abstract, Affective and Psychomotor domains of intelligence.

To incoming Part 1 candidates: You may come from any background. Let God order your steps. Master one resource at a time. Do your lab works well. The system is tough because lives are at stake. You’ll pass. And you’ll be better for it.

You’ve got this.

Chikarata2020:
Am not a Doctor, just working in the health Sector. The truth is that no one is happy about the undue monopoly of medical doctors across the health sector. Just recently they pushed a bill to harmonize all the health care associations under NMA. The major reason they are successful in their game of monopoly and dominance is lack of unity among other health care professionals, for me dragging of the doctor title with them isn't relevant. But making sure that their excess are kept in check, if all the health care professionals continue being selfish in their agenda, then it will be a field day for the monopolists.
The monopoly and dominance of what? This is something I keep asking everyone even physically. Because till now, I never understand that thing cos everyone comes to work daily, do their jobs in the respective enclosures and offices. So why can't everyone continues to do their jobs as specified and let the patients be happy since they're employed for them.

I think they probably wanted to bring all these allied health sciences then under MDCN supervision so that they kind of cut of unnecessary proliferation of bodies. I think this was the news, I doubt your submission but can check it up online.

Now, Generally speaking, it is in human psychology the sanctity of Medicine. The Law, the Clergy, the teacher and the Physician are something entrenched in the core of the society that it is difficult to take away in terms of reference and honour. Even before the introduction of "Dr" title that most want to die on, these four have always been respected. If you take the titles away, they will still. I don't use the title 'Dr' and never planned using it except it shows in formal documents but I can tell you the respect comes no matter how humble I want to be. In fact I hide my identity most times. Who titles help abeg. Moreso, you could be Dr of anything, but will the title make one a medical doctor? A physician? Or a surgeon? If anyone wants these, pick UTME, read Medicine and Surgery and go after it. It is something anyone can do once they can spend the time and are dedicated. It's that simple. I've seen elderly people who still do this to fulfill the call. I did. Why then do one need to think they need to tear a house down to build their own. It's irrational and a personality disorders; there are arrays of them in psychiatry, not necessarily does one need to walk naked on the streets.

Sometimes as Africans I wonder how we arrived here. Even the Whites who brought all these jargons are not so crazy about it in their countries. Everyone knows their places and keep to it.

Make everyone just do their jobs in their places, make the patients happy and go home to meet their families.

I'm a Doctor, and please anything to reduce our workload, make una do am.
But sha have sense to refer cases you can't handle and fast .
Sir, This is correct. This evening I was sharing what happened few days ago at our place to a friend. We saw a colleague give stethoscope to a patient. Later we asked him what happened, He explained that the guy never allowed him to his job, he was the one diagnosing himself with investigations to run and saying all these shits he got to know probably via AIs and he guessed he probably had some knowledge in Microbiology and he wouldn't let him talk. He said prior to this, the guy only allowed him do few physical exams
Baba said he asked him, 'Why then do you have to come to me when you know all these, you could have had the investigations done in all these private laboratories in the town, give AI to explain it to you, go visit any of these pharmacies or chemists and you're done, drugs! Drugs!! As in here, And you're fine. Then reiterated it to him he was joking and not a medical advice over and over to him again. He then continued "Just take the stethoscope, you are already a doctor (off record)". He said what the guy never knew was his condition was heart related from the cardiac (heart) sounds he got during the physical exams. So he knew within himself the guy was a complication waiting to explode. So he allowed him do oversabi, filled a pt refusal form and leave. Cut his voice record because the guy could be interested in litigation when his cardiac condition is well blown and have the record saved.

Most times people are funny. Just imagine, what happens to customers that usually think they can overdo their service providers especially handiworks e.g mechanic, builders, contractors etc, they end up being a victim.

Just imagine if this same patient have gone through all those above routes, AIs will collect money in form of data, private lab go chop their own, pharmacies self nor go carry last. Are they to be blamed? No, they did their jobs, you presented yourself to them and it is your right to have such choices. The hospital self nor carry last for benefits, you know why? Unnecessary workload doesn't have to come that day. But at the end, if complications arise, hospitals will now have enough time to eat to satisfaction and it wouldn't even be sure the same patient will survive. Something that most times, when caught early will have been a work over to the health management team. Who lost? Put your family on unnecessary financial burdens even after you're gone! The spouse and children may now be subjected to all kinds of life horrors. Very wicked soul

This is why on nairaland, I hardly post anything regarding those looking for diagnosis here. Is nairaland a hospital? I will rather give money to those actively been taken care of in a hospital but because of a financial challenge, couldn't meet up. The doctor will still be paid whether you come to hospital or not. Forget it, complications from different areas will still flood in and bring money to hospitals, the pharmacies will get their cash, the chemist will sell his or her mixtures and get paid, the AI will have more users and even learn more through you. Everyone gets money along the chain. Smart people. Who suffers it most? MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) don't need advertisement whether you like it or not. It is a club. You're in, you're in with nothing to lose at the end in the chain. Do your work within the limit of medical ethics, conscience and framework of the law. I was never bittered on it when I wasn't in. When it was time, God made it happened and still grateful for it. For the opportunity to serve humanity. But humanity should give itself sense too.

Why lose when you're the one to suffer the most?

Please this is a welcome development. We love it. Reduce the workload. God bless your profession. Ride on man.
EducationRe: Please I Need Advice? Is There Hope For Me With My Bsc Anatomy? by Dawson126:
ThatWriterBoy:
Hello everyone! Please I need advice. I'm 25 (will turn 26 this year) and I'm currently serving at the Federal University Lokoja medical school. The Human Anatomy department there. I graduated with a BSc Human Anatomy, 2.1 (4.25 GPA) from University of Port Harcourt. Before, I would always say I didn't want to go back for MBBS because of the cost and I felt that time had passed for me, but a couple of things made me start considering it again.
1. When FUL was trying to get MDCN accreditation late last year and early this year, I noticed that only 2 of the lecturers on the anatomy staff list had a BSc in Human Anatomy. The rest were doctors. Some had a first degree in anatomy, while others were pure MBBS. When I asked one of the first degree anatomy holders, he explained that in a short while, non-MBBS degree holders would no longer be allowed to teach medical students, and coming into academia with an MBBS degree was much better than coming in with a BSc. I realised that even if I have a PhD in Anatomy, perhaps a time would come where a doctor without a PhD would be preferred to lecture medical students than me. I really did not mind becoming a lecturer though, but now I'm not so sure with my anatomy degree.
2. Someone asked me today what my plans would be after I'm done serving (I finish in May), and I genuinely did not know what to say. The truth is, I would say I'd go for an MSc or something (I was considering doing something with neuroscience), but I'm starting to feel like I'm delaying the inevitable. Unemployment or underemployment and stuff. I remember my doctor uncle telling me that the 5, 6, 7 years I did not want to spend to go back to school after my anatomy degree, would still be spent on the unemployment line, and his words were scary.

I think I'm going to apply for direct entry to MBBS this year. After all, the worst that would happen is I don't get in, and I wouldn't know unless I try right? Please I need advice on the best university to apply to where I would actually stand a chance of getting in on my first try.

I considered Rivers State University since the school is in my village and they'd definitely have an indigene quota, but the school fees even for indigenes is too much for me to pay. My parents are near retirement and I don't want to put this extra burden on them after they paid for the first degree. Yes, all my siblings are done with school with the last one in final year, but I would feel guilty if I put another degree cost on them. I'd like to fund this one myself or at least get a scholarship for it.
I considered going back to Uniport where I got my anatomy degree as I heard that schools normally consider their graduates for MBBS admissions, but I also heard Uniport would give more preference to their JUPEB graduates from Ashgroove than DE so there's a massive chance I may not get in. Like the quota for DE is normally shared with JUPEB guys, and more would come from JUPEB since they pay so much money for their program. I considered Unical too because I saw they accept a 2.2 in anatomy for direct entry, and so it might be easier to get in with my 2.1. Someone was also suggesting I try Unilorin, which might be cool although I don't know whether I actually stand a chance, or FUL where I'm serving (but since the medical school just started, I'm a bit skeptical about applying, and I don't think I'd like to school there considering that I served there).

Is there any other school I should consider with my grade which would not be so expensive, and maybe a bit closer to my family in Port Harcourt? Although I really wouldn't mind going far if the chances of me getting there would be high. Also, would the calendar of the school be fast enough? I know RSU has a very fast calendar and they don't go on ASUU strikes.

But perhaps there's still something I can do with my BSc in Anatomy. I have just 3 months to be done with my NYSC service, and maybe I don't have to go back for an MBBS degree.

Please give me your advice. I'd really appreciate you. Thank you!
Good afternoon sir,

I think your uncle submissions might be valid but nor be God. God knows the best and His supremacy cannot be questioned. For the foregoing, your objective is just two things: Get admitted into a medical school and be able to cater for the expenses
1. RSU is in your village, your people might be connected to one or two persons who could help with admissions considering the fact that you're from the state. If you're there, feeding is a lot catered for and since you've known the ground quite well, seeing one or two things to do wouldn't be difficult. School fees? Your family members, if there are supportive o, will at least cater for something. Nelfund self go drop
2. FUL: I would have said you've dull yourself. You served there, at least you would have used hands of men mixed with prayers to gain favour that short time especially with people in authority there, people that could move things o, like the provost or college secretary, then find your way in even if it's 100L. Accreditation will still come provided the school is serious, I doubt if FUL haven't gotten it already. That school has at least resources on ground. Forget all these I serve there kinda things. I am attending medical school in the LGA I served a year after and omor, even corp members posted there new or people I senior, na sir and ma. Like play play, I don dey clinicals. One of those guys dey write JAMB this year as him eyes don open
FUL school fees is relatively cheap and the town self go cheap cos all these northern areas, nelfund go help and little they give at home will supplement, you will quickly adapt cos you've been there for a while. Competitions would have been lesser before they got accreditation, if they have already o
UNILORIN: not a bad idea too but omor that school and competitions en but nothing is impossible for God

Foremost, go write JAMB fess, that one nor go wait for you at all, put school wey catchment areas cath you while you figure things out. Make sure you do the exams cos I think you can convert UTME to DE later so that incase if later na UTME 100L be way, you won't be pained and if na DE later sure, you just convert. Find out more info. Dey try your leg for FUL, if it later work, you just enter straight, if family assure say Dem go support for RSU, nothing do you, if na Unical latter hit your objectives and assurance or other ones in SE, nothing go do you, if later you're not sure, check all these new medical schools that already have students in 300L and awaiting accreditation, ensure they've done NUC's but waiting for MDCN's, get info from their students regarding seriousness and resources on ground and that you're sure they are admitting for that academic session, then put those ones later with COC and institution. By the time they have the accreditation, the competition of the next academic session you would have escaped it. Make sure you're sure they are admitting for that year

If that one nor work, check all these new medical schools that people might not know well, maybe this year jamb self na their second set, put am enter, once it's affordable to what you and your family could carry. Accreditation will come provided resources dey ground. One self dey Kafatchan and Dem don get buildings already

Meanwhile this year wey remain, learn skill even if na to learn phone repair, that one go help you hold body for medical school and not much capital required regarding shop, you fit dey your room dey handle students phone

Lastly, pray, pray, pray that God order your steps and give you favour. Nor joke with God o

Have you heard something called Arrival fallacy or delayed gratification?
You see, it's the way most humans are wired. Without much medical details, without this feeling, your desires directed towards executive planning and motor actions won't be able to achieve more, you wouldn't want to be active and the brains hate such feelings until it is overwhelmed with another gratification such as imagination. It's a circadian rhythmic characteristics of the brain.

Hello DemMillionaire,

Sir,

The advice I would have offered is that if you have any deep freezing mechanisms, you just curr them as they're already mature. You kill them and just deep freeze while you look for a buyer whether in Kg or the parts like the head, the thigh (drumstick). Or better still you get into talk with eateries around you whether big or small about the availability of chicken with you. If you don't do this, you might end up using the money you get from selling two or more to feed the rest as in keeping them alive and the appreciable gain in size at the end wouldn't even be equivalent to the cost you have incurred in keeping them alive.

As funny as this may sound, this is the reality of today.

The basic education of Nigeria has improved to some extent especially towards the south. These days, it has reduced really seeing anyone celebrating they gained admission to polytechnics not alone COE. Coupled with the fact that universities are proliferating because of these politics of my state has more unis, my town must have cos I'm gov etc, with other reasons, most Colleges of education get minimal amount of students. Even some universities are struggling with enrollment and that's one major reason the cut off point is low compared to those days. If you don't bring it down, less than 2,000 might apply to a uni with carrying capacity of 8,000. Education facilities are becoming oversupplied.

It's just better to float everything to Unis because of increasing uni demand leading nowhere, create more jobs for people in the academic, but the graduates, Omo, how dem being won do market for them?

I had an experience with someone here some months ago. He had appendicitis and was booked for surgery at a private practice. The amount should be about 150-200k, I can't really remember. This guy was a young person who had left the village hoping to find better life in the city so he could gather money and established his business cos he learnt some handiwork according to him.

This guy left the hospital willingly and was at home wriggling in pain, refused to call home because according to him, none would even come to his aids cos they're even expecting from him and not them him now. So he decided to come home that he would rather die here than go home.

You know on a norm, once you're a medical student and you have few people around that you guys just talk a bit somehow, they begin to call you doc, doc. So one of these people who happened to know the guy called me and hearing his story I was really touched. I made some calls and visits to some of my ogas that really understands how life could deal with people and pleaded with them here in our TH, we were able to hook the guy on a program from a donor/ppp health insurance. At the end, it only costs us 15k.

If I had the power, I would make sure there is compulsory health insurance for everyone in the country and make sure there is enough awareness regarding it, enough actions. People shouldn't die anyhow over diseases that are won battles already. And people don't need to suffer at the hospitals!

This is so saddening. May God help every business out there and continue to support their owners.
