Legendary Serbian Novak Djokovic has been fined over N6 million for smashing his racket in the 2023 Wimbledon final on Sunday.
Djokovic lost his first final at the All-England club for the first time in six years following an explosive encounter against Carlos Alcaraz at the Centre Court.

The 36-year-old lost to the youngster in the five-set final following a 1-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 defeat in the game that lasted over four hours.

Djokovic punished by Wimbledon
During the game against Alcaraz, the legendary Serbia failed to control his emotions having failed to break and then losing his own service in the fifth set.

Djokovic was cautioned by umpire Fergus Murphy for time violation, per Daily Mail.

But 20-year-old Alcaraz broke Djokovic in the game of the fifth set and the Serbian lost it and smashed his racket against the net.

Djokovic has now been fined $8000, over N6 million by the All-England Club for what they described as “racket abuse.”

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez could be another player leaving Europe as reports suggest that he has agreed personal terms with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.

The Algerian player has two years left on his current contract at the Etihad after winning a historic triple with City last month.

Mahrez joined Manchester City in 2018 for a fee worth £60 million and could end his five-year stay at the Etihad this summer.

The City forward has been linked with a move away this summer and recent reports suggest that he has agreed personal terms with a Saudi Arabian team.

According to reports, the recently promoted team is willing to pay Pep Guardiola's team £30 million to sign the Algerian.

Al-Ahli, one of the four founding teams that were taken over earlier this month by the nation's Public Investment Fund, which also owns Newcastle United, was unexpectedly relegated to the Saudi top division.

Last month, Mail Sport claimed that Mahrez was considering ending his career in Saudi Arabia where he could receive a two-year contract for £43 million plus bonuses.

While they continue to pursue great European players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, who have joined Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad, it is evident how ambitious and financially powerful the Saudi clubs are.

Mahrez not sure of the move
According to Daily Mail, Mahrez is understood to be hesitant about leaving City this summer having recently won the Treble under Pep Guardiola.

Mahrez was frustrated about his lack of playing time toward the end of last season when he was left on the bench in the Champions League and FA Cup finals.

The Algerian has made 236 appearances for City since moving from Leicester in 2018, making 78 goals and 59 assists.

Declan Rice has finally completed his move to Arsenal after agreeing a fee with West Ham several days ago.

4. Decision-making on and off the ball
The English midfielder’s ability to make the right decisions at the right time is one quality every midfielder needs to possess.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has opened up about his disastrous spell as Chelsea’s interim manager last season, noting that the task of motivating the squad was too difficult for any coach to pull off.

The former Chelsea captain was tasked with keeping Chelsea’s 2022/23 campaign respectable after the Blues suffered under former boss Graham Potter but he was only able to guide them to a finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Lampard noted that the team had already suffered too much by the time he arrived, and noted that a number of factors hampered the team’s motivation and desire, which he was unable to recover.

Despite having an expensively assembled squad at his disposal, Lampard noted that the level that the Blues were playing at when he arrived was unbefitting of the Chelsea badge and said he was not surprised at the ensuing struggles.

Lampard joined a sinking ship as Chelsea boss
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Lampard said he realised as soon as he joined the club that something was wrong.

He said, “I could see in training the the level wasn't enough. It wasn't enough to get a result at Brentford at home or whatever, let alone Real Madrid.”

He also noticed that after losing to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, things got even worse.

“When I got there I could see the team spirit and the togetherness was not there. It was nothing bad, but you have to train elite to be elite.

“The minute we didn't get through against Real, you're into that end of season zone and what are you playing for? And that is not the norm at Chelsea.

“At Chelsea, we should be playing for something. We played for not so much, another reason why motivation came down.”

Lampard also noted that it was difficult to motivate the large numbers in the Chelsea squad especially players who had been ostracised and felt they deserved better.

'When I came in, I noticed very quickly that some players were thinking the season was going to peter out and what the future would look like for them,” Lampard said.

“If I'm a player that's not been playing for seven months and think I might be leaving in four weeks' time, I'm probably going to struggle to motivate that player. I haven't got a magic wand to motivate them.

“When you have international players in a big number, you're telling internationals they have to stay at home. It's not easy.”

Lampard has been out of work since leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2022/23 campaign and is looking to get back into management as soon as possible.

Nine teams to qualify directly for World Cup
Due to the number of teams to play at the World Cup increasing from 32 to 48 in 2026, Africa as seen its slots increase from five to nine while also gaining a place in an inter-continentl playoff.

There are nine qualification groups in the CAF region, meaning that only one team can qualify directly from each group, with only the top team from each of CAF’s nine qualifying groups automatically reaching the 2026 World Cup.

Four of the best losers from the nine groups will also qualify for a continental play-off, the winner of which will compete in an inter-continental play-off which could see Africa get an astounding 10 places at the 2026 World Cup.

On Wednesday, LeBron James made it official that he would play his 21st NBA season with the Lakers.

The former Japan international has been an active footballer since 1986 with Brazilian side, Santos, and is still unwilling to hand up his boots, 37 years later.

Miura has been a staple in Japanese football for decades, and despite taking his services outside his home country, appears to be no closer to retiring than the day he started his career.

After making his debut in football with Santos, Miura went on to represent 17 teams in five countries, playing for clubs such as Vissel Kobe, Genoa, Dynamo Zagreb, Palmeiras, Sydney FC, and Verdy Kawasaki.

The forward also represented the Japanese national team 89 times, scoring 55 goals for the Blue Samurai, including at the Afro-Asian Cup final against the Ivory Coast as he helped his country to the 1993 title.

The world football governing body FIFA has banned Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr from registering any new signing going into the new Saudi Pro League.

FIFA banned Al-Nassr after failing to pay the money they owed Leicester City for the transfer of Ahmed Musa.

Musa joined Al-Nassr from Leicester City in 2018, shortly after the World Cup in Russia, for €16.50m.

While the Knights of Naja have paid the transfer fee, they are yet to pay the add-ons Leicester are entitled to despite The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling.

According to Ben Jacobs, Al-Nassr were ordered to pay the Foxes €460k in performance-related add-ons as part of the conditions of the deal that took Musa to their club in 2018.

However, the Saudi Arabian giants are yet to obey CAS’ ruling, forcing FIFA to ban them from registering new players ahead of the new season.

Nonetheless, FIFA will likely lift the ban soon as Al-Nassr are expected to pay the money to Leicester before the new season kicks off.

Musa joined Al-Nassr in 2018, going on to play 60 games for the club. The Super Eagles captain scored 11 and registered 14 assists during his time at the club, winning the league title in his first season and also the Super Cup in his second year.

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has admitted he would not be able to turn down a move to Chelsea this summer.

Despite Brighton's interest in seeing Chelsea offer Levi Colwill in any bid for Caicedo, Chelsea have made it clear they will not entertain the possibility.

Following an investigation into salary manipulation during the Covid-19 pandemic, former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has been banned from football for a further 16 months and fined €60,000.

On Monday, Agnelli was sanctioned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for salary manipulation, agent relationships, and other club partnerships.

The 47-year-old will be adding this suspension to a two-year ban he was already serving for alleged financial malpractice following a capital gains case in January.

As part of the plea bargain Juventus and other past and present directors struck with the FIGC in May to bring an end to the sporting penalties for financial malpractice, he agreed to stand trial after not entering a plea bargain.

Juventus, along with other past and present directors, agreed to a fine after refusing to enter a plea bargain.

The verdict in May ended the scandal and allowed the Bianconeri and FIGC to move on without further sanctions, such as a points deduction next season.

During the game against Enyimba, an official of the Naija Super 8 came to the happy corner to ask the home fans to put an end to what he termed ‘noise’.

The official called on a high-ranking Sporting Official who was at the Stadium to caution the fans to stop as they were making noise.

Sporting fans protested mildly before they continued to support their team with their vuvuzelas.

The Naija Super 8 official was furious with this and gestured to the VIP area to fine the club; “N5m for Sporting Lagos, Sporting Lagos.”

Following the bizarre situation at the Stadium in Onikan, the fans have now taken to their social media accounts to blast the organisers.

One of the organizers of this Super8 came to Happy Corner to say that the noise is too much, that the noise has to go. Baba this is @SportingLagos!!! The noise is going nowhere. You better go home,” one of the fans stated.

Reacting to the post above, another of the fans at the happy corner said;
This was one of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever heard since I started watching football. Well, the organizers have not really been top-notch around here and seem to be okay with the level the league is at. “Making too much noise” as if this is a library.”

“Telling people they're making too much noise in a stadium is a very foolish thing. That's why the Nigerian Premier League will never move forward. Dead league. Brain-dead organisers. I wonder what they did to even merit their positions of authority,” another fan added.

“If you like the Anfield atmosphere or the Signal Iduna stadium in Dortmund, you will be watching Sporting Lagos play at Onikan. - the happy corner is here to make the loudest noise in Lagos.”

Sporting Lagos will be playing their next game in the Naija Super 8 against neighbours Remo Stars on Tuesday.

On the first day of the Nigerian Championships, World Record (WR) holder Tobi Amusan competed in the women's 100m Hurdles semifinals, which she won effortlessly and later on the final.

To the disappointment of Nigerian sports fans and enthusiasts, the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium (the venue of the championship) was empty, with no spectators present or media promotions worthy of a homecoming befitting of a national heroine.

This has caused several debates online, making many suggest that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have no understanding of the business side of sports, maximising the social media and online presence of Amusan, and they may have lost its plot in organising world-class athletics championships.
1. Rush-hour organisation by AFN
According to a confirmed source (name withheld), the Nigeria Trials organising committee was selected a week before its commencement.

Now a well-organised country or federation, planning would have started at least six months ago when the federation knew that Amusan will be in the country to race in front of her home fans.

Organising a world-class athletics meet takes time to plan and put up a show. Though the AFN have a pretty good committee, they could not pull off any marketing or get the locals out to watch due to time constraints.

2. Location
The last time Nigeria held a continental athletics competition was the 2018 African Championships in Asaba which exceeded expectations based on media awareness and spectators turnout.

Applying a similar approach would have been better, using Delta State as the location as it's known to b a sports-loving state, and fans would have turned out in their numbers.

Another viable location is Lagos, using the school vicinity of Yabatech Sports Center. The track is known for its fast surface, and there would have been a guarantee of high spectators turnout from students and athletics-loving fans who wants to watch their national icon for the first time.

3. Non-functioning media or marketing departments in AFN
Does the AFN have functioning media and marketing departments responsible for athletes and competition promotions? Because if they do, the departments should have done a better job using Amusan's popularity and relevance to attract sponsors and media engagements.

In an organised country that understands sports marketing and fan engagement, the Nigeria Trials should be aired live on a local TV station and live-streamed on at least one social media platform of the AFN.

4. Zero social media presence by AFN
It's unbelievable that in this media age where online presence is the foundation of any successful business and dissemination of information, the AFN doesn't have social media platforms.

So when a governing body whose only means of communication is through letters/mails and depending on other online platforms, they won't understand the relevance of how to work with a global star to improve their brand visibility.

For example, there was no online or traditional media exposure concerning the Trials - the biggest yearly athletics meet in the country, and apart from athletics enthusiasts following the sport vividly and creating online content, the meet is as good as bland.

5. Poor online and offline publicity
It still boils down to poor media awareness before and during the trials.

Publicity should have begun at least a month ahead, talking to sponsors about the magnitude of the online presence it'll gather with the presence of Amusan, Ese Brume, and other recognised Nigerian athletes flying into the country.

A pre-championship international meet could have been put together, inviting some elite athletes and using Amusan as the headliner to attract sponsors and awareness.

Unfortunately, these were not considered, and the outcome was what was seen at the stadium.

The 24-year-old remains a hot property in the transfer market but is currently on holiday following a brilliant last season with PSG.

His form includes a memorable outing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he emerged as the tournamen’s top scorer and golden boot winner in Qatar.

However, despite his impressive form for club and country, there are still uncertainties around his future in Paris.

As reported bymbappe, early this year the France international made it clear that he would stay at PSG next season but will not be taking up the option to extend his contract at the club beyond that.

Now, according to a report by Marca, Mbappe has demanded for a whopping 240 millions euros in transfer package to leave Ligue 1 champions, PSG.

Real Madrid's reaction
Real Madrid remain in the hunt for Mbappe but are not impressed by his latest demand.

Accoding to the report, Los Blancos now view the World Star as a prisoner of money but remain interested as they look to snap him up next year as a free agent.

With Mbappe’s demands making move this season a difficult one following the departure of club legend Karim Benzema, Real have already moved on with the signing of former youngster Joselu from Espanyol.

Pulse Sports also reported that the 33-year-old had sealed a return to the club on a season-long loan which would see him replace Benzema until the end of next season when Real are expected to try again to sign Mbappe on a free transfer.
