Politics2023 Elections: The Subtle Media War? by DeAdvokate(op): 7:35am On Dec 04, 2022
I have noticed the subtle media war between Arise TV and TVC ( A station owned by Tinubu). If you notice closely you will realize that Arise TV seems to be anti-Tinubu. The level of criticism against Tinubu is much more than other candidates. Despite the refusal of Atiku to attend any of their Town Hall debates, he rarely get criticized, Peter Obi seems to be their 'favourite' media friendly candidate.

However, this is not new, as CNN (unlike Fox News) was basically against the Trump led government in America while they were clearly Pro- Biden.

What is your view?

Politics2023 Elections: Obi, Tinubu, Atiku Use Of Propaganda by DeAdvokate(op): 5:28pm On Nov 27, 2022
As part of my MSc thesis in communication, I wrote extensively on the use of propaganda in Nigeria elections.

The case study was the 2015 elections between the then President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.
I cited newspaper 'headlines' that were pure propagandas.

Propaganda is simply half truth or "factual lie" in order to gain political favour or sway people to a cause. It was prominent during the Adolf Hilter led war in Germany where Joesef Goebbel was the chief propagandist promoting "the final solution" mantra.

Types of proganda

Ad hominem: attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments. This was apparent in the build up to the election some examples will suffice here: Nigerian needs a true nationalist to pilot its affairs; not an ethnic Jingoists or disguised religious fanatic... (Nigerian Tribune, 20 January, 2015, p. 5) “…To all GEJ fans, may God run your life the way GEJ has run this country” (The SUN, 21 January, 2015, Back page) “… Goodluck in Jonathan has become bad luck to Nigerians… Goodluck means bloodshed”- Father Mbaka. (Vanguard,7 January, 2015, P. 38) “Retired General Muhammadu Buhari is too old and sick to become President. (Daily Trust, 21 January, 2015 p. 7).

Ad Nauseam: it is a repeated argument such that people begin to take it as truth. Instances abound in the build up to the 2015 elections where the term “clueless” “drunkard” was tagged on President Goodluck Jonathan, again on the part of General Muhammadu Buhari he was perpetually referred to as an “Islamic Fundamentalist” “dictator” as captured in these newspapers: “APC’s Presidential Candidate is a Fundamentalist”- Edwin Clark (Thisday, 17 January, 2015 p. 15) “…Jonathan is a Failure, not my Generation”- Fashola. (National Mirror, 14 January, 2015 p. 7) “… Goodluck in Jonathan has become bad luck to Nigerians… Goodluck means bloodshed”- Father Mbaka. (Vanguard, 7 January, 2015, p. 38).

Appeal to Authority: in the context a prominent authority is cited to support a position, idea argument or course. On the issue of alleged corruption in The Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) former President Olusegun Obasanjo was reported to have “cleared” the involvement of General Muhammadu Buhari as captured here: “PTF: Obasanjo clears Buhari”- (Daily Trust, 14 January, 2015) “Obasanjo clears air on PTF, absolves Buhari of wrongdoing…” (The Nation, 13 January, 2015). ”Again, President Jonathan was endorsed by pockets of royal fathers in South-West Nigeria”. “Polls: Ooni leads Yoruba Obas to endorse Jonathan (Punch).
Appeal to Fear: this technique seeks to build support by instilling anxieties and panic in the general public. From what transpired during the 2015 elections, this technique was deployed recklessly especially to put fear in the electorates. Newspapers carried screaming headlines such as this: “Fayose explodes: Presidential contest is a do or die” (Desert Herald, 6 – 12 January, p. 52) “…Tompolo insists Nigerian will break if Jonathan loses”. (The Nation, 30 January, 2015 p. 1) “2015 Presidential Elections: Ex-Militants Meet, threaten war” (Daily Trust, January 25, 2015; front page); “Jonathan represents light and Buhari represents darkness” (This Day, 8 January, 2015, p. 1); “APC vows to form parallel government if 2015 elections are rigged”, (The Sun). “Ekiti guber Polls will be rig and roast”- Tinubu (Vanguard, 24 April, 2014) “Niger Delta militants threaten war if Jonathan loses”- Boyloaf, Militant Leader (The Punch, 25 January, 2015, p. 5).

Black and White Fallacy: presenting only two choices, with the product or idea being propagated as the better choice. The technique was applied in these campaign ads: “Jonathan represents light and Buhari represents darkness”. (This Day, 8 January, 2015; front page) “Who is allowing Islamisation of Nigeria? Buhari or Jonathan” (Saturday Vanguard, p. 31) “Will you allow history to repeat history itself? Enough of state burials”. (The Sun, 19 January, 2015, p. 1) “...Don’t fall for this deception or its agents of darkness...” (The Sun, 24 January, 2015, p. 57).

Big lie: the repeated articulation of complex events that justify subsequent action. The description of these events have elements of truth, and the “big lie” generalizations merge and eventually supplant the public’s accurate perception of the underlining events. “Buhari threatens to drag NTA, AIT to court over hate broadcast…” (Vangaurd, 2 Febuary, 2015) “This man shares the same vision with ‘Boko Haram” (terrorists); “Can we trust such a man to be president”? (Vanguard,18 January. 2015, p. 4) “Broadcast: APC asks NBC to probe, punish AIT, Articles…” (This Day, 1 Febuary, 2015).

Common Man/Plain Folks: this approach attempts to convince the audience that the propagandist’s position reflect the common sense of the people. It is designed to win the confidence of the audience by communicating in the common manner and style of the target audience. Propagandist use ordinary language and mannerism (and clothe their message in face -to-face and audio visual communications) in attempting to identify their point of view with that of the average person. “Osinbajo campaigns on BRT bus…” (Vanguard, 20, January, 2015). Many other politicians were seen walking on the street buying roasted corns, plantain, shopping in local markets just to show that they are “common man”

Demonizing the Enemy: making individuals from the opposing party, ethnic or those who support the opposing viewpoint appeared to be subhuman, worthless, or immoral, through suggestion or false accusations. Ezeibe (2015, p. 5) observed that the hatred between the ethnic groups that make up Nigeria has intensified as the use of hate speech continues unregulated. This hatred manifests mostly between the dominant ethnic groups- Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. The Igbo and Yoruba see the Hausa as “Abokis‟ which though means friend but derogatorily means a slowpoke. Similarly, the Hausa and the Yoruba see the Igbo as lovers of money and opportunists while the Hausa and Igbo see the Yoruba as cowards and saboteurs.

Glittering Generalities: these are emotionally appealing words applied to a product or idea but which present no concrete argument or analysis. “PDP National Sec., Prof. Wale Oladipupo refers to Buhari as semi-illiterate”. (Vanguard, 4 January, 2015 p. 10)
PoliticsRe: Why Will Southwest Present A Candidate Like Tinubu? by DeAdvokate(op): 3:18pm On Nov 27, 2022
KwaraRat:
Tinubu is not a consensus candidate of the Yoruba nation but a candidate iof the APC ticket which he secured from party delegates that saw majority of Igbo delegates vote for him

Know the difference.

Afenifere's position on Tinubu is there for you to see Tinubu as a party product and not a Yoruba consensus candidate.

The only people with a tribal candidate is you igbos and for that I am not considering Obi .
I'm not Igbo, take note
PoliticsWhy Will Southwest Present A Candidate Like Tinubu? by DeAdvokate(op): 3:06pm On Nov 27, 2022
I was shell-shocked yesterday when I heard the speech of APC Presidential candidate blurry and unfathomable speech. Is this the best Southwest can give to Nigeria? Why do we want to trade the lives of 200 million Nigerians just for the selfish ambition of an old sickly and frail man. In all honesty, can you be happy to have Tinubu as a lecturer who had to teach you an important course in the university? Imagine him speaking to any foreign media! If this man eventually wins (I hope he doesn't) the so called 'cabals' will hold this country by its jugular. Tinubu can be worst than Buhari, his gaffes in the last two months are pointers to what to come. God save us from power grabbers!
