PoliticsSchool Feeding Promise: FG Already Looking For Excuses- Fayose by Decibel(op): 7:31pm On Jun 12, 2016
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has insisted that the School Feeding Programme of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government must be done without the proposed 40 per cent counterpart funding from the States, saying, “the Federal Government is already looking for excuse for the impending failure of the programme by asking States to contribute 40 per cent to the scheme.”
The governor, who said the school feeding programme was purely a contract between the APC-led Federal Government and Nigerians, asked, “Were the States consulted before the APC made the promise during the presidential campaign? How can you make a promise and win election on the basis of that promise and now expect States to help you to fulfill the promise? That to me is fraud!”

In a statement on Sunday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said that Ekiti State and other States in the country deserved to benefit from the programme without assisting the federal government with any 40 per cent counterpart funding.
The governor said the APC-led Federal Government should rather blame itself for failing to do proper study on the practicability of the scheme before promising Nigerians instead of looking for who to blame for not fulfilling the school feeding promise.
He said; “apart from the fact that Ekiti State lacked the financial wherewithal to provide counterpart fund for such a programme, it is the duty of President Muhammadu Buhari and his APC that won election on the basis of their promise to give free meal to school pupils to fulfill the promise without placing any burden on other tiers of government.”
“Nigerians should come to term with the reality that the federal government is already looking for a ready alibi for the impending failure of the school feeding programme.
“The federal government knows that 80 per cent of the States lack the financial will to be able to contribute the 40 per cent counterpart fund for the programme and the time the programme eventually fails, Nigerians will be told that it failed because States did not key in to it.

“As for us in Ekiti, we are interested in the programme because Nigeria belongs to all of us. But we won’t contribute any counterpart fund because the programme is solely an electoral promise of the APC and we were never consulted before the promise was made. We don’t even have the capability to make any financial contribution even if it is 10 per cent because our financial condition is such that we can’t even pay workers salary,” Governor Fayose said.

PoliticsSack any worker and lose your License FG tells Firms by Decibel(op): 9:02pm On Jun 07, 2016
GENEVA - The Federal Government, Tuesday expressed shock that employers in the financial sector, especially banks were breaching its directives to stop further retrenchment, threatening to withdraw the operating license of any bank or telecommunication company that breached its directive to stop mass sack of workers.
Speaking to Nigerian journalists at the ongoing 105th session of the International Labour Congress, ILC, in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, warned that government would sanction erring companies because government had a duty to protect jobs in this harsh economy.
Ngige was responding to questions on alleged breach of his earlier directive to banks and other financial institutions to stop further retrenchment of workers pending the stakeholders meeting scheduled for next month.
The minister, who spoke after his speech to the ILO National Assembly, said: “We will go a step further if they continue. We know what to do. After all, the banks have the licenses giving by the government.
We know what to do. They need to comply. They need to come to the negotiation table. We did (halted the
spate of sack to hold a stakeholders meeting) that in the oil industry and we succeeded. Even if you are going to lay off, there is a way to declare redundancy, there is a process.
Section 20 of the Labour Act says it. You must call the unions and discuss with them. You don't just treat them as slaves in their own country and you want us to keep quiet.
“We want them to maintain the statusquo. As far as I am the minister of labour, I will protect the interest of workers; same to the telecommunication companies, they are also talking about compiling lists without discussing with anybody.”

PoliticsConfab Report:Restructuring Nigeria Not Our Priority APC Tells Nigerians by Decibel(op):
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has said the issue of restructuring is not the party priority for now.

According to him, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration is currently focused on rebuilding the economy, creating jobs and ensuring the security of lives and property.
The APC chief said this in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH in Abuja, on Friday.
He explained that because the issue was important, the party would at the appropriate time; make its position on the matter public.
This is as the Presidency on Saturday said it was on the same page with the ruling APC on calls for the reconstruction of the country.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH .
Odigie-Oyegun noted that there were several challenges the administration was currently grappling with.
He said, “To bring this additional issue (restructuring) – is not the wisest thing for a nation that is struggling to stabilise to go into an unnecessary diversion at this point.

“Nothing is wrong with the idea but at this time, it is best for us to concentrate on our priorities. As a party, our priority right now is to rebuild the economy, create jobs and deal with the security problems at hand.
“And with what is happening in the Niger Delta you can see that there is so much to do. We must get our priority right some day we will come to that.”
He pleaded with Nigerians not to lose hope because the current challenges were temporary while appealing to them to continue to give unwavering support for the Buhari-led administration to enable it to deliver on its mandate.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had, on Tuesday, advocated the restructuring of the country to ensure the development and growth of the federating units.
“Agitations by many right-thinking Nigerians call for a restructuring and a renewal of our federation to make it less centralised, less suffocating and less dictatorial in the affairs of our country’s constituent units and localities,” the former vice-president had said at a book presentation, “We are all Biafrans”, in Abuja.

Eminent Nigerians such as a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and an ex-Chairman of the Nigerian chapter of Transparency International, Maj. Gen. Ishola Williams (retd.), as well as groups such as Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, and the pan-Igbo umbrella body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had also supported Atiku’s call.
When asked about the Presidency’s position on the calls, Adesina referred our correspondent to the ruling party’s roadmap for the country.
He said, “The governing party, the APC, has a position on restructuring in its roadmap for the country. Please consult the document.”
Our correspondent’s online check of the party’s document titled “Roadmap to a new Nigeria” showed that the closest information to the issue of restructuring was contained in a section titled “Strengthen peace, security and Foreign Policy.”
Under that section, the APC listed its roadmap for peace, security and foreign policy to include; to enable states to have their own local police forces that address the special needs of each community, including community policing initiatives that restore trust among local citizens; establishing a serious crime squad with state-of-the-art training and equipment to combat terrorism, militancy and ethno-religious communal clashes; and to provide a comprehensive compensation plan for victims of ethno-religious crisis, communal clashes and terrorism.

PoliticsFG Directs Banks To Suspend Retrenchment by Decibel(op): 7:20pm On Jun 03, 2016
The Federal Government on Friday directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to suspend the on-going retrenchment in the sector.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry.

This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria,’’ it said.
The statement said that the decision was further predicated on the fact that the continued retrenchment and redundancy by the sector were jeopardising the outcome of the reconciliatory and mediatory processes undertaken by the ministry.

In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold.
Pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for the first week of July 2,’’ the statement read in part.

However, Ngige advised all parties in the interest of industrial peace and harmony to maintain the status-quo ante-belum.

PoliticsCoward-in-chief - Nigerians React To Buhari's Absence In Ogoni by Decibel(op): 8:33pm On Jun 02, 2016
When it was announced that President Muhammadu Buhari would on Thursday, June 2, visit Ogoniland to flag-off the clean-up exercise in the region, many were elated, however, the militant group Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) did not think it wise .
President Muhammadu Buhari’s cancelled trip to Ogoni land has become an issue of keen debate.
Nigerians again were sent into a frenzy when news broke out that the president had cancelled his trip and in his stead, Vice President Osinbajo would attend. The cancellation of the president’s trip to Ogoniland has caused so much uproar on social media, with some Nigerians calling it cowardice, while others defended the move.
Below are the takes of Nigerians on the very controversial issue.

Chidimma Joy said: “Buhari is afraid of Niger Delta Avengers because of the threatening letter they sent to him yesterday. But wait o,I thought Buhari said he is the strongest man on earth, and that he will crush Niger Delta Avengers; but now he is afraid to visit their land as he promised.”
Lukpata Jeremiah was of the opinion that Buhari cannot go to places like the Niger Delta, when he has no clean mind or conscience.
“He promised to come to Lagos but failed, he only sent his houseboy. Now he promised Ogoni people but failed again. He is a promise-and-fail person. His next promised place will be Sambisa forest but I know he will fail also. You northerners i do know quiet well that you people will attack me on this buh i must tell you the truth. When GEJ was there, he entered anywhere including military camp in Sambisa forest that is the quality of a leader with a deep love for his country,” Lukpata.
Hilldon E Meku said: “Everything I have heard and seen about this APC regime is all lies, can’t the same so called president also delegate his deputy to go and represent him on foreign trips? I believe those foreign trips are for his selfish interest and not for the benefit of Nigeria. Jonathan may be corrupt , Yes! But Buhari is one of the leading vanguards of corruption if not their father. To me he is not a worthy father because he is a dictator and its all over his words and actions.”
Buhari is “The coward-in-chief of the Nigerian forces Buhari has his tail between his legs,” Kalu Azu Elijah.
“General that cannot lead the war from the front. Is that one General?,” Kami Eazychi
Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to the situation. “Whether it’s PMB or Vice President that travelled to Rivers, the most important thing is that the FG has taken a bold and unprecedented step in cleaning up Ogoni land and the Niger Delta in line with #UNEP report and recommendations. An initiative hitherto disregarded by past administrations.By his action,PMB is present.Action is the soul and testimony of physical presence.”

Babatunde B Yusuff said: “Why are you all wailing? When an Ijaw man was president for six years and cannot clean up his own Ogoni land. The measure was implemented in 2011. Another man now comes and do it and you are not ashamed.”

“Sometimes, most times, common sense is not always common. GEJ saw the need to concede defeat to prevent bloodshed. If PMB sends his vice to stop trouble makers from having a field day, does that mean cowardice? No (in d upper case). It is just common sense. Of course it’s d timid soldier that usually conveys the corpse of the brave warrior home(words of our elders),” Ujay Udobong said.
Dickson Ighavini said: “I think the president is in order. He knows the consequence, in the event of anything happening to him, on the Niger Delta. Surely, you can’t expect him to leave such a burden of guilt on his family if the rascals should carry out an act, the consequences of which they do not know.
Lanre Azeez: “Do u think he (Buhari) stopped going because he is afraid? He is not afraid to go but he avoids spilling of human blood because the wailing wailers would cry foul when Ogoni water land becomes blood land. Humility of a tiger is not being afraid. Buhari is ahead of the game.”

PoliticsEFCC Probe: Jonathan Flees Otuoke To An Unknown Destination - Naija by Decibel(op):
– Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s has left Otuoke for an unknown destination this afternoon
– While some sources have said he left for Port Harcourt en route Abuja, some have said those destinations may have been publicized to throw interested parties off his track
– It was alleged that Jonathan had gone on exile to evade arrest from the EFCC for allegations of corrupt practices that occured during his administration, which he denied
Former president Goodluck Jonathan has surprisingly left his country home in Otuoke barely hours after news of his return to Bayelsa was made public.

According to a report on Sahara Reporters, Jonathan’s departure from Otuoke was discovered after some of his kinsmen thronged his Otuoke home this Thursday afternoon, June 2, only to be told he had left for Port Harcourt.
It was gathered that some security men were seen turning visitors back at the ex-president’s residence.
“He just left for Port Harcourt en route Abuja; the aircraft just left,” one of them was overheard telling visitors at about 2.30 pm local time.
Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan has surprisingly left his country home in Otuoke hours after news of his return to Bayelsa was made public.
However, there is a bit of confusion as sources are yet to identify Jonathan’s presence either in Port Harcourt or Abuja.

It was reported that a few hours after his return to Nigeria through the Port Harcourt International airport in Rivers on Wednesday, June 1, the former president went to his home town in Otuoke
Friends and well-wishers were around to welcome the former president back to the country.

PoliticsTambuwal Warns Council Chairmen Against Hiding In Hotels by Decibel(op): 8:26pm On Jun 01, 2016
Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Wednesday warned local government chairmen in the state against abandoning their jobs and hiding in hotels in Sokoto and its environs.
The governor gave the warning while swearing in newly-elected chairmen of the 22 local government areas of the state in Sokoto.
''The previous nefarious habit of some of your predecessors who abandoned their various local governments and hid in hotels in Sokoto as well as other hideouts will no longer be tolerated.
"Any council chairman who is found wanting in this direction will be dealt with accordingly.
'' You must stay in your respective local governments and deliver the needed social services to the people.
''You must be good ambassadors of the APC and the state government as well as be God-fearing and accountable.
''You must also uphold the sterling tenets of democracy and justify the confidence reposed in the APC, and work with the civil servants, security agencies and traditional rulers,'' he said.
He called on them to prioritize the sectors of education, agriculture, health, youths and women empowerment as well as maintenance of peace and security.
Tambuwal directed the chairmen to immediately swear-in the councillors-elect to enhance good governance and service delivery to the people.

PoliticsKatsina State Completely bankrupt & moribund - Aminu Masari by Decibel(op): 8:18pm On Jun 01, 2016
Aminu Masari of Katsina State on Wednesday said 24 out of the 34 local government councils in the state are completely broke.
Masari told newsmen in Katsina that the 24 local government councils have no money to pay salaries and execute projects.
He added that even the 10 solvent local councils usually have no money left for projects after paying the salaries of their workers.
“Our local government councils are faced with scarcity of funds. As I am talking to you, some local government councils have no fund to even buy stationeries to work with in the offices.''
The governor revealed that the state government now spend between N600 million and N900 million monthly to bail out the councils, to pay salaries.
Masari said that the state government is using its savings to support the local councils, adding that the burden was becoming unbearable.
The governor explained that the government has no plans to hold local council elections in the state for now.
He said that the precarious financial problem facing the local government councils, would not be able to support an election.
"Based on estimation, about N10 million is needed monthly to pay salaries and allowances of elected chairmen, councillors, supervisory councillors and other officials of the councils," Masari said.
The governor stressed that measures had been adopted to strengthen the capacity of all the 34 local government areas to explore new revenue options to save the system from total collapse.
