JideSM Kindly advice...I can't make/receive calls OR do USSD activities when on MTN 4G (only browsing happens) |
Some Toyota's may tolerate ATF as the power steering oil; please confirm from your car manual (NOT "friend", "mechanic", "rewire" or "workman" )!! Honda's typically specify their ATF as different from the power steering oil. Once topped a Honda power steering with Honda ATF; the reaction was immediate (lots of noise from the pump). You may "manage" with products labelled as useful for both auto-transmission and power steering systems...but you'll only get perfect performance from a Honda power steering if you use their original recommended power steering fluid pictured on page 1 of this thread (speaking from experience) |
Speaking from years of driving within and between several cities/towns spanning from Lagos to Calabar, I have to agree with autojosh. Knowing and understanding the relevant laws for driving in Nigeria is highly recommended. However, you can save yourself TIME and STRESS if you learn how to deal with various classes of enforcement agents on our roads (Customs, Police, Soldiers, FRSC, state/LG officials i.e. LASTMA in Lagos, VIO etc...). Claim your right but also apply "common sense" considering your immediate safety as well as that of passengers, your vehicle and it's contents (as applicable). |
Interesting read... Driven to and in different parts of Lagos (mainland and island), several cities/towns (Benin City, Onitsha etc...), done numerous inter-state journeys across Nigeria. Each place has its "vibe"...just flow with it (most importantly, understand and obey traffic rules!). Honestly though, "moving" a vehicle from place to place does NOT mean one can drive...most of us do need to learn/re-learn the art of driving. |

autotrader2:Supported. 5W-40 is usually full synthetic. If its Total Quartz 9000 5W-40 u used (cost #8,500 for 5 litres but now #11,000 this year), its API category SN/SM which applies for 2011 and older engines (backwards compatible). However, be careful with rapid swapping of oil grades...I have seen an engine damaged (crankshaft, main bearing, piston) within weeks of switching to the said 5W-40 (so high cost of oil does not exactly grant safety from engine damage). Don't panic; if you already using the 5W-40 and have not noticed any issues or changes in performance...just be consistent with it...don't keep changing the specs. General rule: stick with manufacturers specs (especially for newer cars with low mileage i.e. less than say 100,000 miles) Where the specs are not available, get something close enough. (You may not need to order from abroad) Just take time to research the various brands available locally. Go to major filling stations with well stocked lube shop. |
Siena:, the recommended 5w40 doesn't last in the engine , it just too thin to stay the engine, so I opted for 20w50. Its been 4yrs and counting vehicle still runs, oils is clean because I change it every 3 months. Share your practical experience of how you look after your car, dont band wagon to look cool.[/quote]Had to comment on this topic because it something I am researching on right now @kaeforum - I agree with you 100% and your experience/comment is supported by comments from other car users/reviews posted in other automobile forums. @Siena - thank you for sharing. The key word in your post is "modern engines" so yes I see your point. However, some notes: - the talk about engines knocking on using recommended specs does happen; I have experienced it. But factors such as genuineness of the said recommended engine oil needs to be considered. Its not easy to tell a genuine product in Nigeria unless you manufactured it yourself OR are certain of importation process (third parties can also import junk and package it as "recommended" for same price!). Even the so-called major corporate outlets still openly sell "OBSOLETE" engine oil of category API SF/CC SG/CF - for some users, using 20W-50 is a practical last resort because the recommended engine oil as not always readily available in Nigeria (not just because of the cost). I have paid for and used 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 (including those of API category SM and SN) and the ubiquitous 20W-50. |

Piyke:Just stumbled on this thread...your observation is correct. After having a failed engine and been told that the "knock" was either due to a failed engine oil pump OR the actual engine oil (manufacturer recommended 5W20) thinning out at high temperatures and high-speed driving (engine failed on the Sagamu-Ore-Benin expressway); here's my view and my plan going forward: - I do not think the manufacturer specs of 5W20 is the problem even though the vehicle was manufactured in US and is now used in Nigeria (different climes and conditions) - The real problem is - does the can actually contain what the label says? (Alot of fakes out there; I strongly suspect the "Honda 5W20" I bought over #10,000 here in Lagos and used for the car was fake, hence the "knock"!) - Some (I think "majority of" ) marketers sell fakes (forget the labels; they can refill the can & re-seal) - To reduce my risk, I will only buy engine oil specs from known major corporate outlets (such as Mobil or Total) or order from abroad if feasible That is my contribution, dissenting views are welcome |
