Romance / Bad Breath Ruins Relationships: Stop It Now by dentalchannelng: 12:30pm On Oct 11, 2017
Many a girl never finds out why her romances fizzle out. That’s because, much as they dislike oral offence, people just can’t bring themselves to tell a girl she is guilty of it. Someone needs to tell her but unfortunately nobody does.
#Why #must #you #stop #it #now?
#It is one of the reasons people move away from you.
#It is one of the reasons people sit away from you
#It makes you look unattractive and unclean.
#It’s the main reason why some people don’t fancy you when you talk
#It hinders affectionate kissing – a veritable tool for good sexual intimacy
#You tend to cover your mouth everywhere and unfortunately it makes the situation worse
#It can ruin your relationship, as it often leads to separation & divorce
#It can lead to psychological problem if not well handled.
It is believed to be the third most important reasons why people see a dentist worldwide. The other two main reasons are tooth decay and gum disease.
Unfortunately people who have it may not know they have it until they are told and sometimes someone may claim to have it and yet does not have it.

Health / What Is It About A Dental Clinic? by dentalchannelng: 11:36am On Sep 04, 2017
For many Nigerians, dental clinic is a nightmare and there are a number of reasons for that which are:
1. The new environment…
2. The scary instruments & equipment used by the dentists.
3. The uncomfortable sounds of the drilling machine or the noise from the suction tips very close to the ear.
4. The fearful idea of somebody doing treatments in the mouth.
5. The smell of medicines and disinfectants.
6. The metallic taste of instruments or taste of any dental materials can itself be irritating.
7. Misconception about the dental treatment options.
8. Fear of dental pain.
9. Cost of dental treatment
10. Locating a dental clinic etc.
Hmmmmmm, we can’t agree less with you. These aforementioned reasons are more than enough to delay dental visits/ treatments for many. But do you know what? If you really want to enjoy your oral health, you need to take a bold step and locate a nearby dental clinic and book an appointment to shame ignorance, fear and dental diseases.

Food / Oral Habits (1): Effects Of Finger Sucking & Nail Biting On Your Teeth by dentalchannelng: 9:49pm On Aug 11, 2017
Finger sucking & nail biting as oral habits

An oral habit is any repetitive or stereotypical behaviour which utilise the mouth. It is a reflection of growth and maturing of structures in the mouth.
It becomes detrimental to the mouth structures beyond the age when the permanent teeth begins to erupt. They occur in 90% of normal developing infants within 2 hrs of birth. 100% of children within the 1st year of life indulge in oral habits. It becomes a mild to moderate health r...isk after 4 yrs of age.

There are numerous habits that fall under this category such as NAIL BITING, FINGER/DIGIT SUCKING, DIGIT SUCKING, TONGUE THRUSTING, LIP SUCKING, ARM SUCKING,BRUXISM.

When I was a little boy, each time I tried to bite my nails or suck my fingers, my mum would scream ‘stop that, it is bad, are you hungry? So, over time I asked myself what is the big deal about finger sucking? When we were in pry school, our teacher used to say it is bad because the fingers and long nails when dirty, harbour infectious organisms. In fact, they waged war against keeping long nails but no one ever told us the effect of nail biting and finger sucking on the teeth probably because they didn’t know about that.

Many in the time past have proposed theories on why people suck their fingers or bite their nails like food, but mostly it is believed that it often stems from loneliness, stress or just as a form of newly acquired habit. The habit of nail biting is often a way to ease anxiety as it keeps at least one part of the body busy while the mind lacks interest. Anger, frustration, hunger, boredom and loneliness can also be seen as added emotional triggers

Family / What Is Your Take On It?: A Letter From A Grumpy Mother To Her Daughter by dentalchannelng: 4:06pm On Aug 07, 2017
My dearest daughter,
There is something bothering me about my dental health which I can’t bottle any longer because I cherish you so much.
-You can see I'm getting old and my teeth are not the way they used to be- sparkling white with fresh breath, now I often have some unpleasant odour coming out of my mouth. I beg you to please be patient with me, and for the sake of our union, try to understand what I'm going through, don’t be covering your nose when you sit close to me.

If when I brush my teeth, blood comes out of my gums, please don’t be irritated, it is because my teeth are no longer as healthy as they used to be again, remember when I was helping you brush your teeth when new ones were about to come out, that your gum became swollen and brushing became difficult and you also bled in pain.

When I don't want to brush my teeth, don't be mad and don't embarrass me. Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to brush your teeth when you were just a little girl?

Food / Foods That Can Influence Your Oral Health by dentalchannelng: 1:06pm On Jul 22, 2017
Most Nigerians know that a balanced, nutritious diet is very essential to healthy living. They also know that eating patterns and food choices play an important role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease. That shows we are informed. Good. The question now is ´are we well- informed?'

Tooth decay in every form is the single most common long term childhood disease, but the good news is that it is entirely preventable and treatable. Tooth decay happens when the sticky stuff on the teeth called plaque which contain some bacteria in the mouth come into contact with sugar in the mouth, causing acid to attack the teeth
Limit the quantity of snacks you eat and if you must snack, choose fruit or vegetables and plain water. Foods that are eaten as part of a meal cause less harm to teeth because more saliva is released during that period as compared to those taken in-between meal throughout the day. Saliva performs cleansing function in the mouth and lessens the effects of acids which dissolves the teeth

Health / Facts About Wisdom Teeth by dentalchannelng: 12:50pm On Jul 17, 2017
Have you ever wondered why we call the teeth at the back of our mouth wisdom teeth?
One could have imagined that it is because it’s only the wise who have the complete 4 of them in the mouth or it is because they usually stand out among other forms of teeth in the mouth, so that they will dodge being used for hard labour of crushing and chewing and thus last longer in the mouth. Anyway, the usual answer is that they're thought to be called "wisdom teeth" because they appear so late—much later than the other teeth, at an age in which people are supposed to be wiser than children - which is when all your other teeth grow. Easy isn’t it?
Wisdom teeth or third molars are the teeth furthest away in the jaws and they are usually the last ones to erupt… if they ever come out! They usually erupt between the ages of 17 years and 21 years.
Also, 90% of Young people around of 20 years have at least one wisdom tooth that hasn’t yet erupted or that has erupted only partially.
Wisdom teeth can continue to erupt until the age of 25 years. For their emergence and eruption to occur without any barrier, there must be adequate growth at the back and each side of the jaws to fully accommodate these teeth.

Food / Seven (7) Ways Keto-compliant Diet Affects Your Teeth by dentalchannelng: 9:32pm On Jun 25, 2017
Hello Nigerians, it is trendy and real. Keto-compliant diet or ketogenic diet which is an effective, tested, confirmed and recent way to lose excess body weight and improve the overall health. Losing weight is most common challenge among individuals in the recent time. Exercising regularly, diet control have been tried but a recent way is through KETOGENIC DIET which is becoming more popular. It is a kind of restricted and tailored diet that contain principally LOW CARBOHYDRATES (from low starch vegetables, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables), HIGH FATS (high quality plant and animal-based fats) & MODERATE PROTEINS.

Summarily, keto diet work on the principle that your body can change its main source of energy from carbohydrates to fat. Once the body does not get adequate carbohydrates, the system is automatically forced to switch the source of energy/fuel to fat. These provide a new fuel or energy source for your body, and cause most of the unique health benefits of this diet. On a ketogenic diet, your body undergoes many biological adjustments and adaptions, including a reduction in insulin and increased fat breakdown. When this occurs, the liver then starts to produce large amounts of KETONES to act as source of energy supply for your brain. If this dietary habit is sustained for a period of time, KETONES levels in the blood will be raised and one will soon be in KETOSIS.

There is no doubt that what we consume have either benefiting or damaging effects on our teeth and a ketogenic diet is no exception to influencing dental health. These are Seven (7) ways keto-compliant diet affects your teeth. Eat the diet with great relish, shed excess weight and still have your teeth intact.

1. KETO DIET=LOW/NO CARBS- Principally LOW CARBOHYDRATES from low starch vegetables, leafy greens and vegetables.

-DENTAL EFFECT–NO ACID FORMATION- It has been shown that sugar or sugar containing foods promote disease causing bacteria within the mouth. This is because Carbohydrates serves as substrates for the bacteria to act upon and produce acids which result in dissolution of the teeth substance leading to tooth decay. This means that low carb diets will lead to a much healthier mouth in the long run because it prevents tartar build-up and holes on the teeth.
2. KETO DIET=KETOSIS- It encourages the breakdown of fat stored for energy instead of glucose, a process known as ketosis or dietary ketosis. This process of ketosis signals your body to burn the available fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates that it naturally chooses to burn first. When this occurs, the liver then starts to produce large amounts of KETONES to act as source of energy supply for your brain. If this dietary habit is sustained for a period of time, KETONES levels in the blood will be raised and one will soon be in KETOSIS.

-DENTAL EFFECT- BAD BREATH AT EARLY STAGE- Restricted carbohydrate intake also may have a negative effect on the oral cavity. While ketosis provides the benefit of rapid weight loss, it also leads to halitosis (chronic bad breath) or fruity-smelling breath. The breakdown of fats by enzymes results in three different smaller units called ketones, acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate. The last two (acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate) can be used to generate energy by most tissues in the body. The third ketone, acetone, cannot be used by the body and is excreted in the urine and exhaled by the lungs, causing halitosis (bad breath). While the resulting chronic bad breath causes no harm to your oral health, it can be especially annoying when you’re in close contacts with others. This breath is actually a positive sign for your diet though it may affect your social interaction. Many ketogenic dieters brush their teeth several times per day, or use sugar-free gum or sucking on mints that contain xylitol to solve the issue.
Fear not, all you need do is to drink plenty of water which will help to weaken the stench by diluting the concentration of the fruity smell. You can also mask the smell with chewing of sugarless gum e.g. orbit, Mentos & xylitol. Perhaps, your halitosis is too difficult to manage, the best option for you is to increase your carbohydrate intake and exiting the state of ketosis may be.

3. KETO DIET= WATER + LEMON- It is often advised that water is simply the base of what you should drink on a keto diet (or any other diet). If you would like some taste when drinking your water you can add a few drops of lemon.

-DENTAL EFFECT- TEETH SENSITIVITY- Plain water is very good to the teeth. A squeeze of lemon or lime can turn a simple glass of water into a fun beverage, however it is not always the best choice for your mouth. Lemon is acidic and it can make the teeth to become sensitive over time.

4. KETO DIET=COFFEE AND TEA- you can drink as much coffee and tea as you want on a keto diet. Coffee contains a very small amount of carbohydrate. It is so small so you do not really need to worry about it. Tea usually contains no carbohydrate at all. There is however some types of tea that contains some carbohydrates so try to check it before you have some.

-DENTAL EFFECT-TEETH DISCOLOURATION- Tea and coffee frequent consumption often cause generalised dark or brown stains called extrinsic/ external teeth discolouration.

Health / Ten (10) Reasons Why You Need Healthy Teeth by dentalchannelng: 2:38pm On Jun 21, 2017
I remember when we were in medical school, a senior lecturer asked us a question being fresh clinical students ‘which is the most important part of the body. Many of us were eager to say THE BRAIN, THE HEART, THE KIDNEY, and THE EYES. After hearing us out with our reasons, the senior lecturer went further to counter us one after the other and established the fact that ALL THE PARTS OF THE BODY ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT.
Do you agree? If not, imagine a man without mouth or a mouth without teeth. We all need healthy teeth to survive in this our sojourn. Sometimes we don’t appreciate the value of something until we lose it. Though a great thinker would say we have 32 teeth and only one heart, brain and kidney. Well, one may be right, after all a man once said ‘don’t break a woman’s heart because she got only one, break her teeth because she got 32’’.The reasons why we need teeth in our body can’t be overlooked. What dentists do is to help you prevent dental diseases, promote good dental health and prolong your life by attending to your oral health need. They work by creating the healthy teeth you want or maintaining the healthy teeth you have through science, medicine and artistry!

Here are reasons why you need healthy teeth;
1. CHEWING

-Chewing, the first stage of the process of digestion is the main function of the teeth and it entails biting, tearing, cutting and crushing of food substance.
-Food needs to be chewed and broken down before entering the blood so that the body can easily absorb nutrients from them. In the absence of teeth, digestion is hampered leading to significant disturbances in food absorption.

-Depending on their position and type, teeth have a role in cutting shearing, tearing or grinding of food.

N.B. if you are chewing with one side of the mouth or constantly feeding on soft diets or fluids because your teeth are not healthy, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible to avoid further complications

2. PRONUNCIATION
- Teeth can help us pronounce accurately as they have an important role in the pronunciation of consonants.
- The proper positioning of teeth facilitates correct syllable pronunciation and prevents the tongue from straying during speech formation.
- When the front teeth are missing, the normal speech can be severely affected.

3. AESTHETICS

-Teeth, especially those located in visible areas (incisors and canines) and sometimes premolars during wide smiles, have an important aesthetic role.

- The position, shape and shade of teeth have a pronounced impact in shaping each individual personality.

-Some people frown their faces like zombies just because they don’t have good dentition and over time they have assumed the status quo

4. THEY CAN MAKE YOUR SMILE BEAUTIFUL.

- A better life they say starts with a beautiful smile and an attractive smile makes a lasting impression! A smile is a curve that sets everything straight

-When you smile, the first thing that most people notice will be your teeth. Since your incisors are your eight front teeth, they have a tremendous effect on how your smile looks. This leads many people to whiten their teeth, get braces, fix chips, and get dental work done

- If your smile is not becoming to you, then you should be coming to me, says the dentist.

-It takes 43 muscles to frown but only 17 to smile and most people have less respect for a boss with bad hygiene .i have never seen a smiling face that was ugly before.
N.B. if you can’t smile confidently in the public, please see your dentist

5. TEETH HELP IN GUIDING THE TEETH WHILE CHEWING.

- Whenever you move your jaw to either the left or the right, canines act as the guideposts. If you slide your jaw to the right side now, you’ll notice that both the upper right and lower right canine teeth are sliding against each other.

- Absence of teeth makes the joint around the mandible and base of the skull called TMJ TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT painful sometimes with Clicking sound and Jaw deviation

Romance / Your Wedding Prep Is Not Complete If You Don’t Add Dental Check-up by dentalchannelng: 1:37pm On Jun 14, 2017
Your Wedding Prep Is Not Complete If You Don’t Add Dental Check-up To Your To-Do-List
Marriage is a beautiful thing and wedding preparation is one of the most interesting part of the whole ceremony. Starting from the joyous time of finding true love, to the fantastic era of courtship and the period of family endorsement; the excitements from the intending couples usually know no bounds. We all know that most people engage in a lot of preparations before fully entering into this lifelong union.
One may not consider adding dental appointments to wedding preparation as necessary, but those who have had nasty experiences triggered by stress of wedding planning would attest to its importance. I have seen a bride who had severe toothache on her wedding day because she failed to attend to her dental need on time, it was a terrible experience for her and her family; I have heard of a groom whose toothache became aggravated by crushing of bones after engagement ceremony just few minutes to church program.
Dental problems can develop without being noticed and progress extremely quickly with or without pain or any other form of unpleasant discomforts. Mouth odour (which is the third major reasons why many couples attend dental clinics) can affect communication and kissing, poor oral hygiene can affect one’s aesthetics and psychology, untreated holes on the teeth can suddenly and progressively cause mild-moderate–severe pain overnight.

Health / Oral Health Problems That Elderly People May Have (1) by dentalchannelng: 2:09pm On Jun 07, 2017
The ‘golden’ period of life is the stage reached by those in the over 65-year old generation. The expectation of every nation is an increase in proportion of the elderly in the population due to improved health care. The population of the elderly people is expected to keep rising further in the nearest future. This increase will necessitate an increased sensitivity to, and a heightened awareness of the uniqueness of the elderly patients by the dental profession. Longevity varies considerably with gender as there are more elderly women than men.

Aging causes people to be less active, frail, and exposed to more risks of contracting diseases. The United Nations recognised this fact at the United Nations General Assembly in Vienna, in 1982. This assembly then adopted a set of principles for Member States and incorporated them in their programmes for the old.

Despite the above, and the provisions made in the 1999 Constitution, in Nigeria, the burden of care squarely rests on family members. Section 14. 2(b) of the constitution states that, “The security and welfare of its people shall be the primary purpose of the government”, and it goes on to promise in Section 16, sub-section 2(d), “That suitable and adequate shelter and suitable and adequate food, reasonable national minimum living wage, old age care and pensions and unemployment, sick benefits and welfare of the disabled are provided for all citizens.” Unfortunately, the government seems to have reneged on these promises as most elderly are not covered by any social security scheme.
Aging process is an interesting gift to whoever experience it .Aging is multifactorial. Starts from birth. Aging is a normal process that take place at different rates in different people and sex, and within different systems of the body. From person to person, the rate of this progression really differ. As we age, our bodies change in many ways that affect the functions and forms of our cells. These changes occur little by little and progress over time.

The major results of the aging process are: reduction in the functions of the kidney, heart, lungs, heart, brain, eyes etc.; a decline in quickness of response; a changed motor and visual coordination; a decreased interest; a lowered oxygen consumption;a decreased capability of adapting to altering conditions; a decreased immune response; a decrease in gastric juice production; a reduced feeling of thirst; a reduced muscle mass; an increased fat content; hardening of soft tissues; as well as related increased incidence of cancer and age related immune conditions; sensory loss such as reduced smell perception, visual impairment, hearing defect, and tastelessness of food; digestion problems since constipation is more common in older adults due to slowed circulation, reduced sense of thirst and lessened activity level. Apart from what we see in the general health, there are also changes in dental health, however, there could be some problems associated with these changes.

ORAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG AGED PEOPLE
These health problems have strong association with the socioeconomic status of individuals, with past medical and dental records of individuals, and accessibility of oral healthcare

1. POOR ORAL HYGIENE- due to poor manual dexterity which will affect the technicality of tooth brushing and accumulated effects of lack of dental care probably due to unavailability and inaccessibility of dental clinics or unaffordability of dental services with ; the sticky stuffy substances on the teeth will lead to general poor oral hygiene

Dentistry is highly competitive and there are just two ways to get it .First ,blast well in your exams both o-levels and utme.the cut off point can be as high as 80% and above depending on the performance and number of students who chose your school of choice.
second , get average score and have strong connection.some few people will score 60% and add connection to it and secure the admission .when I say connection I mean serious one that can influence the admission process whether directly or indirectly because it is highly competitive.
if LUTH which is the first dental school in Nigeria is not allowed to admit more than 40 students ,how much more of LASUTH that just graduated their first set(about 10 dentist) recently .
The requirement to train a dentist is very huge and thus dental schools only take few students per year in accordance with strict admission guidelines.
In summary, if you lack the second criteria , just forget it and change to another course or try again if you really want the course .
All the best

Health / Things You Need To Know Before Choosing Your Dentist In Nigeria by dentalchannelng: 12:33am On Jun 02, 2017
The public expect that the dental care they receive will be of the highest quality, in a safe environment, using appropriate treatments and materials and that any customer service necessary will be readily available. The dental health care in Nigeria is not generally available, it is not completely accessible, it is not broadly acceptable and it is not satisfactorily affordable and also there is insufficient use of appropriate technology. Despite the fact that the number of dentists in Nigeria is far below the W.H.O recommendation. It is not a bad idea to understand how to choose a dentist.

Dental care globally is a highly personalised interaction between patient and dentist and will vary in degrees of complexity. Thus, absolute guidance on what constitutes a “good” dentist or “good” dentistry difficult to ascertain. There is always a huge gap between what the dentists perceive patient needs and the patient’s expressed needs and expectations.

In order to ensure continuity of dental care, it is prudent that you visit a dentist or a dental clinic on an ongoing basis. Establishing a good rapport with your dentist provides you with ready access to total or comprehensive oral healthcare counsel or treatment you would cherish for long because oral conditions such as tooth decay and gum diseases will be easier to detect and cheaper to treat through early professional intervention.

The likelihood of the need for complex and expensive treatment later will also significantly be reduced. This Guidance is designed to assist patients in making a choice in Nigeria.

Ideally the choice of dentist should be made before any dental emergency arises to avoid having to make that decision in urgent or hurried circumstances and start telling that touch the heart.

If you have not come across a dental clinic or a dentist before or you have had nasty experiences in the past, then this write-up is for you.

1. RECOMMENDATION FROM OTHERS

There is nothing like trust when it comes so health issues. You will agree with me that each and every one of us have at one time or the other come in contact with a general healthcare professionals or patients with some dental experiences before.

A dentist in general practice is qualified to provide all routine dental care and can also provide appropriate referrals in cases where more specialised treatment is indicated or where facilities or materials needed to give standard service are not available You can consult your general health physician to guide you or consider asking friends, family, neighbours or co-workers to recommend dentists with whom they have experience and have been pleased with their treatment. Whether the dentist works in a government or private setting should not be an issue.

Health / Six (6) Ways To Keep Your Toothbrush Safe by dentalchannelng: 12:34am On May 31, 2017
One may be tempted to say “I have not even finished taking care of my teeth and you are talking about toothbrush; please, spare me that!”
It is okay but don’t forget that unless the tooth brush is in good condition, your mouth will be in danger
You might not have thought about keeping your toothbrush as much as we would discuss here, since you’re wetting it every day to scrub your teeth. Relax, learning few more things won’t hurt.
You may not realise what is hanging out on the bristles of your toothbrush as you reach for it each morning.
Toothbrushes can become contaminated with oral microorganisms whenever they are left out without proper care and this can often be injurious to one’s health
Ways to keep your toothbrushes safe for use are as follows:
1. AVOID STORAGE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER AT HOME.
Moisture levels in a closed container are high and this creates an enabling environment for the growth of bacteria. However, when you travel, it should be kept in a container to prevent it from picking up any contaminants. Make sure it is dry before packing it in the casing.

Health / The Nigeria Of My Dream As A Dental Surgeon by dentalchannelng: 1:06am On May 29, 2017
Nigeria dental profession has not got to where it ought to be but it has left where it used to be. Though, the rate at which doctors are leaving the country is alarming, we can always hope for a better tomorrow. It is a matter of time, something will be done to improve the situation on ground so that it can augur well with us as a nation. What the brain drain is causing is simply retrogressive and anti-socialistic. Dental care is scarcely available in many towns in Nigeria and even in the main cities where it is available, it is not affordable to the common man. The inaccessibility and unaffordability of oral health care is a big issue. The Nigeria of my dream is a great Nigeria. My dream of this country has many parts.
