Charlie Boy Does not Deserve a Bus Stop in Lagos

My name is Mrs Ebunola Adebusoye. I'm the Deputy Women leader of Indigenous Lagos Teachers Association

I write this in my personal opinion. My group has not authorised me to do this on itse behalf, but I have to do it after consultation with the Lagos General Secretary, at least to avoid organisational indiscipline. I'm happy I was given to go-ahead to write my own personal opinion.

I speak on the reigning issue of the renaming of Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos to Badoo Bus stop, an exercise executed by the Chairman, Bariga LCDA.

First of all, I thank the Chairman for living up to the expectations of the people of Gbagada where Charles Oputa, alias Charly Boy also referred to as Area Father lived and tormented the residents for many years. As a Lagos indigene and from the Royal home, we are proud of what the Chairman did.

At 65 and as a retired School teacher, I have a sense of what morality means.

Having a Bus Stop with the name Charly Boy is an attempt to glorify immorality of the highest order.

Firstly, Area Father never had a Bus Stop allocated to him at Gbagada. When he moved here many years ago, the first thing he did was to pull down the existing Bus Stop signpost which was second Pedro named after a prominent Lagos family that had put in sweat and blood to the growth, fame and rise of Lagos.

Charly Boy was never officially allocated any Bus Stop. That is the truth. Calling the place Charly Boy was his own creation.

Secondly, Charly boy lived in this area as as a little beast. He tormented the reisidents, turned the place into a jungle, a hub for hard drugs including cocaine and hooliganism. I lived close to him for about 5 years. Myself and my husband had to relocate to Ikorodu because of this nuisance.

He was an extremely bad influence on youths and the core values of Yoruba Nation.

I recall his attack on a 70 year old Mr Akinyemi who challenged his rascality.
He ordered his thugs to beat up the old
man who he stripped naked.

I recall the children of this old man who came to challenge him were also beaten up.

These actions if taken in any civilised world would have been challenged by the relevant authority and Charly Boy would have been sent to jail.

He was contemptuous of Yoruba people who he derided and insulted so often.

He has no respect for the tradition and values of his host.

He owed his landlord 7 years rent which he never paid. The landlady, a Yorubaland woman died of hypertension

Charly Boy converted the rented apartment into a studio that his wife managed. He pulled down the fence and converted the building to his own shape.

He would insult and harrass the woman, playing music all day and all night. The woman died.

People who support Charly Bus stop should tell us what single contributions he made to Lagos or to the people of Gbagada. Monuments should be named after heroes not hooligans and common criminals.

That is an insult and an assault on us whose ancestors own the land.

Kano, Enugu, Owerri, Calabar belong to certain ethnic groups, so why should Lagos belong to everyone? It is just silly and provocative for anyone to slogan this assault on we the people of Lagos.

We hereby caution and warn those who think they can continue to spit on Lagos heritage to beware of the wrath of our ancestors and at the fullness of time, we shall challenge them BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY.

My wife and I had some misunderstanding that resulted in heated arguments.

With the intervention of some elders, the issue was sort of resolved. However, weeks later, I observed that my wife changed the way she saved my number on her phone from "Hubby" to "Dele - Airtel" (not real name, but something like this - assuming I worked in Airtel).

I am thinking of parting ways with her, but children are involved.

"Finally, what is the meaning of Yorubalokan in this tribal politics that has not helped us in 65 years to be anywhere near Qatar and UAE, which both got independence from Britain in 1971?"

The reasons are not far-fetched, as you too must have known despite your tongue in cheek posturing:

1. Tribal monogamy: UAE and Qatar are purely made up of Arab ethnicity, no tribal division. As is the case in Nigeria, where one tribe wants to lord it over the other (plus and including anonimi).

2. Low population density/high oil deposit and output. In contrast to Nigeria's high population density/ low oil output.

Therefore until ethnic affliation/agitation is removed from Nigeria politics, we will remain poor.

Solution: Regional separation or restructuring.

Jerrynet:
A CALL FOR CLARITY AND CONSTITUTIONAL INTERPRETATION:
The Rivers State Case Before the Supreme Court

I am not a politician, and I have no intention of becoming one at this time - even though I studied Political Science and was actively involved in student politics, at some point, contested and won an election on campus, which led to my emergence as the Speaker of the Students' Union Government Parliament. My decision not to enter politics is not because I am a clergyman or that it is somehow sinful. No. Politics, in itself, is not a sin. As members of society, we are all inevitably affected by political decisions made through the mechanisms of governance, particularly within the framework of the Social Contract Theory.

However, my personal decision to avoid politics is based on the unfortunate reality of our present political climate - one that has been marred by partisanship, manipulation, and a troubling lack of accountability. That said, my interest in this matter stems not from partisan loyalty, but from a genuine concern for constitutional order and the future of democratic governance in Nigeria.

On March 18, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a six-month State of Emergency in Rivers State under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, suspending the elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and all Members of the State Assembly. He appointed Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the Sole Administrator.

In response, seven - and later eleven - PDP Governors filed a suit (SC/CV/329/2025) at the Supreme Court. They argue that the President lacks constitutional authority to suspend elected officials or dissolve state institutions via emergency rule - claiming this violates Sections 1(2), 5(2), 176, 180, 188, 192, and 305.

They’re asking the apex court among others to:
1. Nullify the emergency declaration and the suspension of democratic institutions.
2. Prohibit future abuse of such power.
3. Void the appointment of a sole administrator.

Since then, many of us are left wondering: Why has the Supreme Court not delivered judgment on this matter?

What is delaying the hearing and determination of the case? Is there an intentional stalling of justice to allow the situation to be overtaken by events and, thereby, justify an eventual ruling that favours the presidency?

Let me be clear: this is not about Governor Siminalayi Fubara, former Governor Nyesom Wike, or President Bola Tinubu. Frankly, I am not concerned with their individual political ambitions or internal rivalries. Most of our contemporary politicians, regardless of how they try to rebrand themselves or appeal to the public, have historically not demonstrated genuine care for the welfare of the masses.

My concern lies with the integrity of our constitutional democracy and the rule of law. We are a federal republic, and in a federal system, governmental powers are constitutionally divided between the national and subnational governments. The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) makes provision for the autonomy of democratically elected officials at both the state and national levels.

Thus, can a sitting President, unilaterally and without due process, suspend a democratically elected governor or dissolve institutions created by the Constitution? If so, where does the Constitution permit such action? If not, what is the constitutional remedy? These are the questions that demand urgent and authoritative interpretation from the Supreme Court.

If this issue remains unresolved, it may set a dangerous precedent that future Presidents could exploit. It opens a constitutional vacuum that could lead to executive tyranny - a scenario where elected state officials may be suspended at will by federal authorities under vague claims of "Emergency Rule."

Therefore, we respectfully call on the Supreme Court of Nigeria to give this case the attention it urgently deserves. We also appeal to constitutional lawyers, civil society organizations, and all defenders of democracy and justice to speak up and demand clarity and accountability.

Let this not be swept under the carpet. For the sake of constitutional governance and the preservation of democratic norms, we ask:

Why has this case not been given a speedy hearing?

This is not a matter of party politics, but a call for justice, legality, and constitutional fidelity. The future of our democracy may very well depend on how this moment is handled.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

— Pastor Jerry A. H.
