Health / JUST IN: Ekiti State Records First COVID-19 Death by DerickCO(m): 4:59pm On Apr 22, 2020
Ekiti State has announced the 29-year-old health worker, who was the third index case of coronavirus in the state, has died of the pandemic.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, who made this disclosure in Ado Ekiti at a press conference, said the woman died on Wednesday around 6:58 am at the Intensive Care Unit of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido EkitI.

The woman, who until his death was a Community Health worker with Lagos State Government, sneaked into Ekiti last week before she fell into prolonged labour leading to the discovery that she had contracted the infectious disease.

Yaya-Kolade regretted the deceased infected a 45 -year old medical doctor, who had been identified as the fourth index case by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC).

“The woman showed signs of stability on Monday but unortunately her condition deteriorated yesterday and we lost her exactly 6.58am today (Wednesday),” she stressed.

On whether her body will be released to the family, Yaya-Kolade said the state will take standard precaution and comply with the World Health Organisation’s safety rules on the burial.

“We are going to liaise with the family on her burial. We are going to consider safety despite that there was assumption that the virus is not active in corpse, because we don’t know much about the virus.

“But whatever we are going to do won’t be against the interest of the family. But let me assure you that the state will also be on the side of safety”, she stated.

She said that where the patient died, had been sanitised and cleaned up since the woman was hospitalised, urging the patients and members of the public not to stigmatise the hospital or afraid of patronising it.

The Commissioner assured the state will proceed with its surveillance and engaging the people on sensitization, to ward off Covid 19 in Ekiti.

She added that all the 78 persons who had contacts with the deceased and the medical doctor, had been traced and placed on isolation.

The Chairman , Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Kano state chapter, Rev. Samuel Adeolu Adeyemo ,has said over one million Christians in the state stay at home to pray on Sunday, to comply with the lockdown order.

The state CAN chairman however, warned that anybody found flouting the order would be arrested and subsequently prosecuted.

However, all Churches were under lock and key,as Christians in the ancient city, complied with the lockdown order ,as worshippers did not attend the Sunday service

According to him, the lock down order impose by the state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, was necessary in a bid to stem the spread of COVID -19 in the state.

His words, ” we members of state CAN, had passed the necessary circulars round to all Church leaders ,advised them on the need to tell members ,to obey the lockdown order ,hence ,any Christians caught in the process of not compiling by the order ,he/She be arrested and be prosecuted ,because he or she does not represent Christians “.

Foreign Affairs / Israel Eases COVID-19 Movement Restrictions by DerickCO(m): 11:56am On Apr 19, 2020
Israel began easing movement restrictions on Sunday while pointedly avoiding announcing any exit from an ongoing lockdown to forestall the spread of coronavirus.

A cabinet vote in the early hours of the morning approved several measures, including a reopening of high street shops, schools for children with special educational needs and a resumption of small scale prayer meetings, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Most of the measures take effect from Sunday, while the selected schools will reopen their doors to pupils on Tuesday, according to the education ministry.

Prayer gatherings of up to 19 people at a time will be allowed, on condition that they take place in the open air with people wearing masks and at least two metres apart — higher than a limit of 10 people initially proposed by the prime minister on Saturday.

As part of social distancing, places of worship for all faiths had previously been closed and from April 12 wearing face masks in public became mandatory.

In a televised address on Saturday, Netanyahu had outlined “a responsible and gradual” plan allowing the return of some workers to offices and industry.

With Ramadan set to begin in the coming days, the premier urged Muslims in Israel to have “meals only with your nuclear family.”

Israel, which has a population of around nine million, confirmed its first coronavirus patient on February 21.

Israel has more than 13,360 confirmed cases of the illness, with 171 fatalities.

Its health ministry says that more than 3,500 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

The past few days have seen a slowdown in new confirmed cases.

But Netanyahu warned that if infection rates started climbing again there would be a fresh clampdown.

“If we see that in two weeks’ time the improving trend continues, there will be further easing,” he said.

“If there should be an additional outbreak of corona(virus), we shall be obliged to backtrack.”

Finance Ministry Director-General Shai Babad spoke in the same broadcast.

“It is important to stress that this is not the start of an exit strategy, we are not returning to normal,” he said.

Israel was an early and tough responder to the health crisis.

In late February it started barring travellers arriving from virus hotspots, gradually extending restrictions to a near-total air travel ban.

Then came regulations barring Israelis from leaving their homes except to go to the supermarket, pharmacy or hospital.

Netanyahu stressed that Israel’s rapid and tough response had proved effective compared to other states that were slower to impose restrictions.

“In Belgium, which is more or less the same size as us, there are over 5,000 deaths… these are not pointless comparisons,” he said.

Crime / No Armed Gang Coming - Lagos CP by DerickCO(m): 10:40am On Apr 19, 2020
Following the threat of armed gangs in communities, Lagos State Government has reassured residents of its commitment to protect lives and property, stressing that the responsibility will not be compromised.

The re-assurance came just as the State Police Command, acting on the orders of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stepped up its surveillance, following the panic generated by threat letters purportedly written to some communities by a faceless criminal group, “One Million Boys”.

The group allegedly threatened that it would carry out armed robbery attacks in some listed neighbourhoods.

The police described the group as “non-existent”, adding that it has strengthened its surveillance across neighbourhoods.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, who led squadrons of anti-robbery policemen to various agitated communities on Friday, allayed residents’ fear, saying the criminal gang called “One Million Boys” had disbanded in several operations.

Odumosu said a new set of criminally-minded people may be hiding under the gang’s name to scare the public, but he assured all that the police, in conjunction with other security agencies, would neutralise such threat.

He said: “Today, we have come out in full show of force to give you assurance that there’s nothing like ‘One Million Boys’; they are criminals. Be assured that government is out to protect you. The police are out there to guarantee your safety and we are doing this in conjunction with soldiers, Navy, Air Force and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.

“So, we are asking you not to panic, go about your lawful engagements. When it is time for you to sleep, you should sleep without nurturing the fear that some faceless criminal gangs will come and attack you. Faceless people are sending letters around only to put fears in your mind. We will respond swiftly to any attack and we shall be patrolling round the State.”

Odumosu gave out emergency numbers to call in case of armed robbery attacks and cautioned residents not to burn tyres on roads because such acts damage and pose health risks to children and the sick.

The numbers are: 09010512385, 09010512286, 09010512287, and 09010512288.

Health / Anambra Index Case Tests Negative by DerickCO(m): 10:30pm On Apr 18, 2020
Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has announced that the COVID-19 Index Case in the state, which has remained the only, has tested negative to the ailment.

The state registered its index case of the virus last Friday, while about 29 persons who had contacts with him were also quarantined.

But Obiano in a special broadcast to citizens of the state on Saturday said the index Case, after one week of treatment, has tested negative and would be discharged after one more test.

Obiano said, “One week ago, I announced to you that our dear state had recorded an Index-Case of the COVID-19 pandemic that has forced the world to a standstill in the past few months.

“Today, I am delighted to announce that the report reaching me from the Protective Care Center indicates that our Index Case is responding very well to treatment. In fact, the first post-treatment result from the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) returned Negative for SARS-CoV 2.

“However, following the standards which have been rigorously applied by NCDC since the outbreak of the pandemic in Nigeria, he will go for a second round of tests before he can be conclusively declared negative. We shall continue to remember him in our prayers as he fights his way back from this illness.”

The governor added that “As I assured in my last broadcast, our medical team has successfully tracked 39 people who had direct contact with the Index Case. Out of this number, 5 are in our Protective Care Center while the rest are quarantined at home.

“The people in our Protective Care Center are stable and have shown no symptoms of the virus so far. Similarly, the people in Home Quarantine are being closely monitored in strict compliance with the WHO guidelines on COVID-19 containment.

“Meanwhile, six people out of the 39 contacts have tested negative for Coronavirus. These are people who met directly with the Index Case 14 days ago. Ndi Anambra, this is something to be cheerful about.

“Similarly, out of 20 samples tested for the virus from Anambra State so far, only the Index Case returned Positive. The rest are negative. Ndi Anambra, this result gives us enough elbow room to fight this monster by adhering to the principles of Social Distancing, maintaining thorough personal hygiene and obeying government directives and policies on the COVID-19 pandemic. I have no doubt that if we keep the rules, we shall be in a good position to kick COVID-19 out of our dear state.”
Foreign Affairs / Queen Elizabeth II Cancels Gun Shooting On Birthday by DerickCO(m): 10:05pm On Apr 18, 2020
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II will not celebrate her birthday on Tuesday with a traditional gun salute due to the coronavirus crisis, Buckingham Palace said on Saturday.

“There will be no gun salutes. Her Majesty was keen that no special measures were put in place to allow gun salutes as she did not feel it appropriate in the current circumstances,” the palace told AFP.

The queen, who turns 94 on Tuesday, made a rare national address at Easter, saying that “we know that coronavirus will not overcome us” and that “we will meet again” after the country’s lockdown is lifted.

Lockdown orders were made last month, and extended this week for another three weeks as the country’s official death toll from the virus hit 14,576.

Foreign Affairs / Man In US Threatens To Shoot Over Lack Of Face Masks by DerickCO(m): 10:38am On Apr 18, 2020
Police in Florida have arrested a man who threatened to go on a shooting rampage in his local supermarket because he thought too few shoppers were wearing protective masks against the coronavirus.

Robert Kovner, 62, was arrested after he posted on Facebook that he would “empty every clip I own” in his local Publix supermarket because not enough customers were wearing protective face coverings, police said.

“Will it take shooting a few of you selfish A-holes in the parking lot to get the message through?” Kovner was reported to have posted on social media.

“Trust me, the virus is not the only thing that may cause your demise!”

Police in Sebring, some 85 miles (135 kilometers) south of Orlando, said that “these are stressful times, but there is no excuse for making threats like this.”

“It’s not a joke. It’s not just a bad day. It’s a crime. We will ALWAYS take them seriously, and you will go to jail,” they said.

Florida has some of the laxest gun laws in the United States, a country rife with mass shootings and where the right to possess guns is guaranteed by the constitution.

Gun shops have been listed as essential services during the pandemic and have racked up record sales since March.

Following federal guidelines, Florida recommends the use of masks in public spaces to prevent the spread of the disease, but face coverings are not obligatory outside of cities like Miami and Miami Beach, whose mayors have ordered them to be worn in enclosed spaces that are open to the public.

By Friday, Florida had recorded more than 24,000 cases of coronavirus, with 680 deaths.

Kovner was charged with threatening to carry out a mass shooting. A police spokesman told AFP he was released on $30,000 bail and that his weapons were confiscated.

Politics / Borno Govt Delegation donates 5.6 million Naira to Parents of Chibok girls by DerickCO(m): 10:13am On Apr 15, 2020
A delegation of commissioners and a lawmaker, sent by the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday, visited parents of the Chibok schoolgirls who were abducted by Boko Haram exactly six years ago.

The delegation which included the commissioners of education, women affairs, poverty alleviation and the member, representing Chibok at the Borno assembly, delivered Governor Zulum’s message of empathy, hope and assurance.

They also presented the families with 500 bags of rice (25kg), 250 gallons of cooking oil and a sum of N5.6million as social support.

The state Commissioner for Education, Bello Ayuba, assured the parents and members of the community that President Muhammadu Buhari and the governor will never give up on the rescue of the remaining schoolgirls.

Ayuba said, “Governor Zulum has asked us to inform you that in all his meetings with President Buhari, the President has consistently shown concern and commitment to the rescue of the missing girls.

“The President and the Governor are fathers, with daughters. They know how you feel and they share your pains. They will never give up on the rescue of our daughters. No sane parent will give up on a missing child. They are committed and by the grace of God, these girls will be rescued alive.

“The Governor sends his empathy, and as you all have seen in his activities and visits to Chibok, the Governor holds Chibok very dear to his heart. Let us remain hopeful and prayerful, while our leaders sustain their concerted efforts.”

Commissioner of Women Affairs, Zuwaira Gambo, and that of Poverty Alleviation, Nuhu Clark, who hails from Chibok took turns to support and encourage the parents.

Boko Haram insurgents had on April 14, 2014, attacked a Government Secondary School in Chibok and taken away over 200 schoolgirls from their hostels. The girls were just about to write the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination.

A total of 219 of them were held by the insurgents, out of which 107 regained freedom after various rescue efforts and largely mediated negotiations between the Buhari administration and the insurgents.

On Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari extended a lockdown in Lagos and Ogun State as well as the Federal Capital Territory by two weeks after an initial two-week lockdown, which he announced on March 29 expired.

In a nationwide broadcast, the President appealed to Nigerians to comply with the lockdown as it was essential to saving lives.

“The irresponsibility of a few can lead to the death of many,” the President warned.

With a lockdown in place, there have been humanitarian and security concerns, but the Federal Government says relief materials and cash transfers and other measures will help cushion the effects of the lockdown.

Politics / We Were Forced To Donate Our Salaries - Reps Member by DerickCO(m): 9:07pm On Apr 14, 2020
A member of the House of Representatives from Niger State has stated that he and many other colleagues were coerced into donating two months salaries to the fight against COVID-19.

Lado Suleja, an All Progressives Congress member representing Guevara/Suleja/Tafa Federal Constituency of Niger State, stated this in a radio interview in his constituency.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, had announced that the entire members of the lower chamber resolved to donate their two months salary to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The speaker made the announcement in a video he shared on Facebook.

The Senate also made an announcement to donate 50 per cent of their salary.

The two-month salary donation, the Speaker said, would be independent of the contributions by individual lawmakers to alleviate the hardship that their constituents face at this time of national emergency.

Gbajabiamila said the lawmakers’ donation would be transferred directly to the National Relief Fund account for the fight against COVID-19.

An average salary of a member of the House of Representatives is between N750,000 to N800,000 (excluding other allowances).

The lawmaker, while speaking on the hardship the lockdown in Suleja, Niger State, has caused his constituents, said despite the fact that he made the donation of his salary against his wish, he still helps his constituents who are in desperate need.

“Though we were forced to donate our two months salary, we still help the poor with the little that we have and we will still continue doing it till we see the end of this virus,” Mr Suleja said in Hausa language.

When asked by the presenter to confirm if he said they were coerced into the donation, the lawmaker affirmed his earlier statement.

“Yes, we donated the salaries because of the progress of Nigeria but I’m assuring you, most of us were not happy about it, that’s the truth.

“It’s Just the way you see workers not happy about salary deductions without their consent.”

The lawmaker confirmed he granted the interview when contacted by this reporter.

The radio station, Prestige FM 91.7 Minna, also confirmed the audio clip to newsmen.

“Yes, he granted me the interview over the phone,” Nuradeen Daza, the presenter of the programme said.

But the House spokesperson, Benjamin Kalu, when contacted simply responded by sms that the allegations were untrue.

“We were not forced. It is our sacrifice to assist the citizens going through hard times now.”

Few days before the Senate’s contribution, ministers serving under the current administration announced they would donate half of their March salaries to help fight the pandemic.

Banks, private organisations. and individuals have also donated billions of Naira, to fight the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

The United Bank for Africa on Thursday announced a N5 billion donation.

Femi Otedola, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Herbert Wigwe and Segun Agbaje also donated N1 billion each to support the cause.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, said the presidential task-force would receive and coordinate all donations made to fight against the pandemic in the country.

Nigeria reported its first confirmed case on February 27 and since then, the number of cases has since risen.

As of Tuesday, the country has reported 343 cases. The breakdown according to states shows that Lagos has recorded the highest, followed by the FCT.

Other states with recorded cases are Oyo, Ogun, Enugu, Edo, Bauchi, Osun, Ekiti, Rivers, Benue and Kaduna.

Others are Akwa Ibom, Katsina, Kwara, Delta, Enugu, Ekiti, Rivers, Ondo, Benue, Niger, Anambra and Kano.

Meanwhile, ten deaths have so far been reported from the outbreak.

Mr Buhari has ordered a lockdown in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states for 14 more days, to curb the spread of the virus.

Health / Ondo Grips Fear As It Records Second Coronavirus Case by DerickCO(m): 7:25pm On Apr 12, 2020
The fear of contracting the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has gripped the people of Ijoka in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State following the discovery of a case in the area, the second in the state.

The Ondo State Government had discovered a person with COVID-19 in the area at the weekend, a development which prompted the government to cancel Easter Sunday services in all the churches in the state.

The state government had earlier given concessions to Christians to worship in their various churches on Easter Sunday but the second case of COVID-19 led to the cancellation of the authorisation.

Residents of Ijoka area in Akure, the state capital, where the case was discovered, have been thrown into a state of unease, with many of them leaving the area to other parts of the town.

Four persons whom the latest victim had contact with, including his wife and children, have been placed on self-isolation.

The patient, who is said to be a staff of Murtala Muhammad Airport, is the second case of COVID-19 in the state.

A military officer who recently returned from India was the index case recorded in the southwestern state.
