Foreign Affairs / George Floyd’s Funeral To Hold On June 9 by DerickCO(m): 12:05pm On Jun 02, 2020
A funeral for George Floyd, the black man who died in US police custody after a Minneapolis officer knelt on his neck, will be held June 9 in Houston, the family’s lawyer said Monday.

“In Minneapolis, there will be a memorial here Thursday, at 1:00 to 3:00,” said attorney Ben Crump, speaking at a press conference in Minneapolis to report the findings of an independent autopsy.

“On Saturday, there will be a memorial service in North Carolina, where he was born, at 1:00 to 3:00. And then on Tuesday, June the ninth, the funeral will take place in Houston, Texas at 11:00 am,” said Crump, who is representing the Floyd family.

George Floyd died on May 27 after a policeman knelt on the 46-year-old man’s neck for almost nine minutes. Floyd became unresponsive after almost three minutes.

His death, captured on mobile phone footage, reignited long-felt anger over police killings of African-Americans and echoed high-profile cases that spurred the Black Lives Matter movement such as the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the July 2014 choking of Eric Garner in New York.

Nationwide uproar sparked over police brutality, and protests and rioting — many that turned violent — erupted in more than 140 cities over the weekend.

Crump announced the results of an autopsy arranged by Floyd’s family that shows he was suffocated by a Minneapolis police officer rather than dying from pre-existing heart problems as claimed by the official ruling.

Religion / Adeboye: It Will Take A Miracle For COVID-19 To Disappear by DerickCO(m): 1:59pm On May 24, 2020
The General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Sunday disclosed that it will take miracle for COVID-19 pandemic to disappear.

But, Adeboye said the pandemic will soon subside.

He said this during his ministration, on Dove television.

The clergy man maintained that by the grace of God, as many as were children of God indeed would be exempted from calamity associated with COVID-19.

In his message titled: “seven ways to deal with a mountain,” Adeboye stressed that the pandemic would not disappear completely but Christians must trust God, the maker of heaven and earth to remain safe.

He maintained that there was no challenge that men passed through that was strange to God, pointing out that even though he was not a prophet but a pastor, God told him at the beginning of the year, the world would be like a child in convulsion.

His words: “The coronavirus pandemic would not disappear completely but it would only subside. It is only a miracle that would cause the pandemic to disappear completely. God has told me that his children who worship him in truth would be exempted from calamity associated with the pandemic.

“I told you that this year, the world will behave like a child in convulsion. I told you at the beginning of the year, even though I am not a prophet, but a Pastor. You will come out of this problem safe and sound, but you must take the step of faith”.

However, he said that good things could also come out of the pandemic, stressing that some families had also united and bonded during the lockdown.

“Some people who did not have time for their families would now bond and have better relationships with their families. God can help you to fly over the challenges brought by the pandemic. All you need do is trust in God”.

Adeboye urged Nigerians to take a step of faith and believe that they will come out of the COVID-19 saga safe and sound.

Religion / Buhari, Family Members Observe Eid Prayer Inside Aso Villa by DerickCO(m): 1:50pm On May 24, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his family on Sunday observed the Eid-El-Fitr prayer at the presidential quarters in line with the protocol against mass gathering issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

The protocol of social distancing was also exhibited during the two-raka’at prayer.

President Buhari had on May 22 pledged to conduct his Eid prayers with his family at home as directed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI),

The President, in a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, in Abuja on Friday, said his decision to observe the Eid prayer at home was also in observance of the lockdown measures in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, put in place “to save lives and protect people from all dangers.”

Shehu, in the statement, said the president had cancelled the annual traditional Sallah homage being embarked upon by residents of the FCT led by the FCT Minister, to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

”Further to this, the President who has traditionally shared the joyous moment with top government officials, political leaders, community heads, Muslim and Christian religious leaders and children, will not be receiving these homages in a bid to stop the coronavirus from further spreading,” he added.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had in his this year’s Sallah message released on Friday urged Muslims to keep their spirits up in spite of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, the deadly virus which caught the world off guard, and has put a damper on what would otherwise have been ”a time of celebration for the Muslim faithful to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period.”

The President said: “For the first time in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the people’s spiritual, social and economic lives.

”This year’s fasting period was particularly challenging for Muslims because they had to forgo many important aspects of their daily worship, including the routine congregations for prayer and the recitation and interpretation of the Holy Qur’an as well as traveling for the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah.

“It is not easy to give up many of these important duties and activities, but it became imperative to do so in order to control or limit the spread of this deadly disease.”(NAN)

Religion / CAN Felicitates With Muslims At Sallah by DerickCO(m): 5:33pm On May 22, 2020
The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) says it is rejoicing with, and congratulating the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar 111, Head of Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) and President-General, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and all Nigerian Muslim Faithful on their successful completion of this year’s Ramadan.

In a letter addressed to the Sultan, CAN said it believes that the great yearly spiritual exercise is in obedience to the Holy Quran that says, “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183.

While the Christian body said it appreciates the coming to an end of this year’s Ramadan prayers, it however, implored all Muslims not to cease from continuously praying for the peace, unity and stability of the country.

“We wish to encourage Muslims in Nigeria and all over the world to continue to pray for a speedy end of COVID-19 in our country, continent and the entire world, to which the Christian Association of Nigeria is also fully committed.

“We commend Nigerians for their cooperation with the government so far in their attempts being made to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, despite all the inconveniences and hardships. It is our prayer that all those who are sick of the pandemic will recover very soon and that those who have lost their loved ones to the cold hands of death will be comforted by the Almighty God.

“May God help us all to continue to keep to the rules and regulations which the government has put in place to stop the spread of the pandemic! We also pray that all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliations and ethnic identities, will continue to live righteously and harmoniously even after this annual spiritual exercise.

“Finally, we wish Your Eminence, the Muslim faithful and indeed the Federal Republic Nigeria, Happy Id el Fitri. God bless you!,”
the letter signed by Barrister Joseph Bade Daramola, CAN’s General Secretary, partially read.

Foreign Affairs / UK Trains Dogs To Detect Asymptomatic Coronavirus Carriers by DerickCO(m): 3:02pm On May 17, 2020
The United Kingdom is in the process of training dogs to ‘sniff’ out symptoms of coronavirus before they appear in humans.

Trials to see how the novel works out are to commence soon, according to the London Mail.

The UK government is supporting the landmark trials to the tune of £500,000 under its funding of vital research into early methods of detecting the virus.

If successful, the dogs could be used to sniff out up to 250 people an hour in a bid to ramp up testing.

The dogs, a mixture of labradors and cocker spaniels, can already identify deadly diseases including cancer, malaria and Parkinson’s disease.

They will now undergo intensive training to spot Covid-19 before symptoms appear.

They will be trained using samples of people infected with coronavirus and those who are uninfected, as some respiratory diseases are known to change body odour.

Research has revealed the dogs are able to detect the odour of disease at the equivalent dilution of one teaspoon of sugar in an astonishing two Olympic-sized swimming pools of water.

The first phase of the trials will be conducted by researchers at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), in collaboration with the charity Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) and Durham University.

A hopeful Professor James Logan, head of the department of disease control at the LSHTM, is quoted as saying: “Our previous work has shown that malaria has a distinctive odour, and with Medical Detection Dogs, we successfully trained dogs to accurately detect malaria,” he said.

‘This combined with the knowledge that respiratory disease can change body odour, makes us hopeful that the dogs can also detect Covid-19.”

Education / Lagos Govt To Commence Distribution Of Food To Primary School Pupils At Home by DerickCO(m): 3:42pm On May 15, 2020
The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) is set to commence the distribution of food to primary school pupils at home.

The Chairman of Lagos SUBEB, Mr Wahab Alawiye-King, disclosed this on Thursday when he visited the warehouse where the food palliatives were kept in Ikeja,

He noted that the initiative is part of the Presidential directive that the Home Grown School Feeding Programme must continue in spite of school closure.

He explained that the government agencies involved have been working relentlessly for the past few weeks to ensure that the directive is carried out, hence the reason for the monitoring of the exercise by the Board.

“The programme is under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Home Grown School Feeding Programme, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government through the Universal Basic Education Board and all stakeholders in the basic education sub-sector”, the Chairman stated.

Allaying fears that the programme might be sabotaged, Alawiye-King maintained that the beneficiaries have been identified and verified, saying “We need to understand that the school feeding programme has been running before now; it is targeted at primary 1-3 pupils in public primary schools. We have gone around using our school vendors and school management board based on available data to identify and verify the households that will benefit from the programme”.

He also gave an assurance that the exercise will be transparent, as international and local organisations are part of the monitoring group involved to ensure that the food palliatives get to the right households, disclosing that over 37,589 homes are being targeted for the pilot scheme.

“202 centres are designated for the distribution of food packages which include 5kg of Rice, 5kg of Beans, 2 Rolls of Sachet Tomato Paste, 500ml of Palm and Groundnut Oil, Salt and 12 Eggs”, Alawiye-King said.

The Special Adviser to the President on National Home Grown School Feeding (NHGSF), Mrs. Titilola Adeyemi-Doro also said that the Federal Government is basically coordinating the process while the State is to take ownership of the Programme because the resources to reach the students are available to the government.

She said that Lagos SUBEB is taking the lead in collaboration with all stakeholders in the education sector.

In her contribution, the Board Secretary of LASUBEB, Mrs. Folusho Ajimoti, stated that a series of meetings were held to ensure efficient distribution of the food items, adding that vouchers would soon be given to the various households already identified.

She also emphasised that Board Members, alongside Education Secretaries of each Local Government as well as food vendors, will form part of the distribution team with relevant stakeholders serving as monitoring groups.

Foreign Affairs / Lesotho Records First Case Of Coronavirus by DerickCO(m): 5:06pm On May 13, 2020
Lesotho, the last African country to have been unaffected by coronavirus, on Wednesday announced it had detected its first case of COVID-19.

The virus was detected on an individual among 81 people who were tested after arriving last week from Saudi Arabia and neighbouring South Africa, the health ministry said in a statement.

“The Ministry of Health informs the Basotho nation and the entire community living in Lesotho, that the country now has the first confirmed case of COVID-19,” Director-General Dr. Nyane Letsie said.

The patient is a Lesotho national studying in Saudi Arabia.

Lesotho went into lockdown on March 29 to protect itself from a potential spread of the virus from South Africa, which entirely surrounds the kingdom and has the highest number of confirmed cases on the continent.

Prime Minister Thomas Thabane loosened the restrictions on May 6 allowing “all non-essential services and enterprises” to “temporarily open shop”.

South Africa has 11,350 confirmed cases and 206 deaths.

Travel / Nigerians Evacuated From Dubai Protest, Say They Are Treated Like Prisoners by DerickCO(m): 1:51am On May 10, 2020
Some Nigerians recently evacuated from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, have stated that they are being treated like prisoners.

They told newsmen that the hotel where they are being quarantined in Lagos is surrounded by soldiers who do not allow them to even get fresh air or receive some sunlight within the compound.

One of them, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of being victimized, said, “Sincerely, we have not had it good since we returned from Dubai. We all tested negative for COVID-19 but we are being treated as if we have the disease.

“We have been here for three days now but we have not been allowed to even breathe fresh air or even feel sunlight on our skin. It is as if we are in prison. Even the food we are being given is not good at all. We are just managing it.”

Another evacuee told newsmen no government official had even called or visited to check their welfare except some officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control who visited them on Saturday morning.

“We have been complaining about this but everything has fallen on deaf ears. No one from the government has called to ask about our living conditions. It was this morning (Saturday) that some NCDC officials came to check our health status.

“We are not allowed to even stroll within the compound. We are just inside our rooms. If things continue this way, some of us may even fall sick from being idle,” he said.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, neither responded to calls nor a text message on Saturday.

The Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, however, said inquiries should be sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyema.

She said, “All COVID-19 issues are handled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in consultation with the PTF (Presidential Task Force). Nidcom’s role was to help co-ordinate names of those who wanted to return, working with the mission.

“And we got about 4,000 from about 75 countries. We are not involved in logistics of their return. So please direct your questions to Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs who is in total control.”

No fewer than 256 evacuated Nigerians arrived in Lagos State from the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

They arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, via an Emirates Airline about 07.40pm.

Newsmen report that upon their arrival, the evacuees were put on isolation for 14 days in line with the government’s COVID-19 protocol.

Speaking on the development, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Abdullahi Binuyo, noted that no responsible government will fold its arms and watch its land being degraded by unauthorised persons.

He noted that aside the economic leakages, the illegal miners had also polluted the Osun River with poisonous metals, thereby making it unsafe for human consumption and irrigation.

Binuyo was, however, quick to add that apart from ensuring that those arrested are prosecuted, they will also be made to pay compensation.

“As part of the government’s economic reforms, solid mineral is a major sector we are looking to explore . For these reforms to work, it has become imperative on the reforms to stop illegal mining and step up enforcement activities. The result is what we are witnessing today.

“The people you see here neither have genuine mining licences nor are they registered with the government. What they claim to have is Exploration Licences, which does not allow them to mine, the way they are doing. So we will be prosecuting them and make them pay damages.

“Apart from flouting government’s Covid-19 Order, by refusing to stay at home, they have created environmental disaster for us, by poisoning our River which is a major public health concern for us,” Binuyo added.

Earlier, one of those arrested, May Zam, who was the only one that could speak passable English among the Chinese, disclosed that she was not aware they were engaged in illegal mining.

She said she worked for different companies, and she believed they should have mining licences, adding that the current company she works for, which she failed to name, has a Nigerian sponsor.

The state government maintained that the arrested people would soon be prosecuted immediately investigations are completed on the activities.

Health / Myth Busters: 19 Wrong Beliefs About The Novel Coronavirus by DerickCO(m): 10:02pm On Apr 30, 2020
There is so much information out there about the novel coronavirus, however, a great percent of what has been said are untrue or misleading.

At this time when this pandemic has brought the world to its knees, we cannot afford to be misinformed about the virus we are battling and what can be done to see that COVID-19 is eventually defeated.

Here are some wrong beliefs that must be shunned if we are to make a headway in this fight against COVID-19.

5G mobile networks DO NOT spread COVID-19
Viruses cannot travel on radio waves/mobile networks. COVID-19 is spreading in many countries that do not have 5G mobile networks.

COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. People can also be infected by touching a contaminated surface and then their eyes, mouth or nose.

Exposing yourself to the sun or to temperatures higher than 25C degrees DOES NOT prevent the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
You can catch COVID-19, no matter how sunny or hot the weather is. Countries with hot weather have reported cases of COVID-19. To protect yourself, make sure you clean your hands frequently and thoroughly and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.

You can recover from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Catching the new coronavirus DOES NOT mean you will have it for life.
Most of the people who catch COVID-19 can recover and eliminate the virus from their bodies. If you catch the disease, make sure you treat your symptoms. If you have cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early – but call your health facility by telephone first. Most patients recover thanks to supportive care.

Being able to hold your breath for 10 seconds or more without coughing or feeling discomfort DOES NOT mean you are free from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) or any other lung disease.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are dry cough, tiredness and fever. Some people may develop more severe forms of the disease, such as pneumonia. The best way to confirm if you have the virus producing COVID-19 disease is with a laboratory test. You cannot confirm it with this breathing exercise, which can even be dangerous.

Drinking alcohol does not protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous
Frequent or excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of health problems.
COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates
From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather. Regardless of climate, adopt protective measures if you live in, or travel to an area reporting COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.

Cold weather and snow CANNOT kill the new coronavirus.
There is no reason to believe that cold weather can kill the new coronavirus or other diseases.

The normal human body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the external temperature or weather. The most effective way to protect yourself against the new coronavirus is by frequently cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or washing them with soap and water.

Taking a hot bath does not prevent the new coronavirus disease
Taking a hot bath will not prevent you from catching COVID-19. Your normal body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the temperature of your bath or shower.

Actually, taking a hot bath with extremely hot water can be harmful, as it can burn you.

The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.

The new coronavirus CANNOT be transmitted through mosquito bites.
To date there has been no information nor evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted by mosquitoes.

The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.

To protect yourself, clean your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Also, avoid close contact with anyone who is coughing and sneezing.

Are hand dryers effective in killing the new coronavirus?
No. Hand dryers are not effective in killing the 2019-nCoV.

To protect yourself against the new coronavirus, you should frequently clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.

Can an ultraviolet disinfection lamp kill the new coronavirus?
UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation.

How effective are thermal scanners in detecting people infected with the new coronavirus?
Thermal scanners are effective in detecting people who have developed a fever (i.e. have a higher than normal body temperature) because of infection with the new coronavirus.

However, they cannot detect people who are infected but are not yet sick with fever. This is because it takes between 2 and 10 days before people who are infected become sick and develop a fever.

Can spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body kill the new coronavirus?
No. Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth). Be aware that both alcohol and chlorine can be useful to disinfect surfaces, but they need to be used under appropriate recommendations.

Do vaccines against pneumonia protect you against the new coronavirus?
No. Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) vaccine, do not provide protection against the new coronavirus.

The virus is so new and different that it needs its own vaccine. Researchers are trying to develop a vaccine against 2019-nCoV, and WHO is supporting their efforts.

Although these vaccines are not effective against 2019-nCoV, vaccination against respiratory illnesses is highly recommended to protect your health.

Can regularly rinsing your nose with saline help prevent infection with the new coronavirus? There is no evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the new coronavirus.

There is some limited evidence that regularly rinsing nose with saline can help people recover more quickly from the common cold. However, regularly rinsing the nose has not been shown to prevent respiratory infections.

Can eating garlic help prevent infection with the new coronavirus? grin
Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus.

Does the new coronavirus affect older people, or are younger people also susceptible?
People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.

Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?
No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria.

The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment.

However, if you are hospitalized for the 2019-nCoV, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible.

Are there any specific medicines to prevent or treat the new coronavirus?
To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

However, those infected with the virus should receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms, and those with severe illness should receive optimized supportive care. Some specific treatments are under investigation, and will be tested through clinical trials. WHO is helping to accelerate research and development efforts with a range or partners.

This advisory is based on research by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Foreign Affairs / Russian Prime Minister Tests Positive For Coronavirus by DerickCO(m): 9:44pm On Apr 30, 2020
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Thursday said he tested positive for coronavirus and will self-isolate to protect other cabinet members.

“I have just learned that the test on the coronavirus I took was positive,” Mishustin said in a video meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

“I have to observe self-isolation and follow orders of doctors. This is necessary to protect my colleagues,” he said, promising to be in constant contact “on all the main issues.”

He suggested that First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov takes his place as an “acting” prime minister.

“What is happening to you now can happen to anyone,” Putin reassured him in the televised meeting.

“I hope that you stay able to work and will actively participate” in government decision-making, he said.

“Without your opinions and your participation these decisions will not be made,” Putin told Mishustin, wishing him a quick recovery.

The IMF Executive Board today approved US$3.4 billion to help #Nigeria address the severe economic impact of the #COVID19 pandemic and the sharp fall of oil prices.

The assistance, facilitated via the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), will help limit the decline in Nigeria’s international reserves “and provide financing to the budget for targeted and temporary spending increases aimed at containing and mitigating the economic impact of the pandemic and of the sharp fall in international oil prices,” the IMF said.
Politics / Edo State Govt Commends 11- Year Old Girl Who Donated N300 To Fight COVID-19 by DerickCO(m): 6:37pm On Apr 28, 2020
The Edo State Government has received cash donation from an 11-year-old girl, Miss Agbongiarhuoyi Eloghosa Favour, in support of government’s efforts to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the state.

Making her donation in Government House Benin City, Favour said she is supporting the Edo State Government with the money in commemoration of her 11th birthday.

She said, “I am celebrating my birthday and have donated the money to support the Edo State Government. This will help to strengthen government’s fight against the spread of COVID-19.

“I brought N300 to assist the government to fight the scourge. I marked my 11th birthday two weeks ago and decided to do this,” she said.

The Focal Person of Edo State Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Office, Mrs. Ifueko Alufokhai, commended the little girl for her donation, which she said will encourage others to do likewise.

“I am overwhelmed that an 11-year-old girl is making a difference to her state through her donation.

“She is teaching the adults to know how to act, and how to support the government at this critical time. Instead of spending the money on herself, she decided to support the government to fight the pandemic. For me, it is really heartwarming. She has really done well as nothing is too small; it will go a long way to help the government win the fight against COVID 19.”

Agbongiarhuoyi’s father, Pastor Peter Agbongiarhuoyi, who accompanied her to make the donation, expressed delight for the support her daughter has given to the state government.

“I thank God for giving her the idea for the donation in support of the government. This is a lesson to others, reminding us of the need to support government with whatever we have. It will portray us as good ambassadors and role models to follow,” he said.

Crime / Police Rescue Dumped Baby In Ekiti by DerickCO(m): 6:29pm On Apr 28, 2020
A new born baby was on Monday found unattended to in an uncompleted building around Goshen Avenue in Adebayo area of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

It was gathered that the baby, with the placenta still attached to its umbilical cord, was discovered by residents of the area who reportedly heard the infant crying.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the cries of the innocent baby attracted a passer-by who intimated residents to the area of the incident.

She added that the residents contacted the office of the Ekiti State First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the police authorities in the state who came for the baby’s rescue.

It was learnt that the infant baby is currently at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, receiving treatment on the bill of Mrs. Fayemi.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr Sunday Abutu who confirmed the incident, said the residents of the community alerted the police about the baby.

“We got a call from that a newly born baby was abandoned in an uncompleted building in Adebayo.

“We have recovered the baby and we immediately move it to EKSUTH and is now undergoing some treatment and care”.

He said the Command had commenced move to track the mother of the baby, described the incident as unfortunate and highest form of wickedness.

Foreign Affairs / Uk's Health Ministry Raises Alarm Over Virus - Related Syndrome In Children by DerickCO(m): 6:19pm On Apr 28, 2020
Britain’s health minister said Tuesday he was “very worried” at signs of a coronavirus-related syndrome emerging in children but stressed it needed more research and remained very rare.

The state-run National Health Service (NHS) issued an alert at the weekend about a small number of children presenting an unusual set of symptoms, including abdominal pain and inflammation around the heart.

They have required admission to intensive care, according to a report in the Health Service Journal.

“I’m very worried about the early signs that in rare cases, there is an impact of an auto-immune response in children that causes a significant disease,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock told LBC radio.

He added: “It’s a new disease that we think may be caused by coronavirus and the COVID-19 virus.”

But Hancock said that while some of the children who have this new disease tested positive for the virus, others had not.

“We’re doing a lot of research now. What I would also stress is that it is rare. Although it is very significant for those children who do get it, the number of cases is small,” he said.

The Guardian newspaper reported that there had been at least 12 cases.

According to the Paediatric Intensive Care Society, the NHS alert warned of common overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and atypical Kawasaki disease and blood parameters consistent with severe COVID-19.

TSS is a serious illness associated with infections while Kawasaki causes blood vessels to become inflamed and is mostly found in children under the age of five.

The national medical director for NHS England, Stephen Powis, said on Monday it was “too early to say” whether the new disease was linked to coronavirus but the issue was being looked into urgently.

England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, said it was “entirely plausible” that it was linked to COVID-19.

Children have died from coronavirus but serious complications are rare.

“Evidence from throughout the world shows us that children appear to be the part of the population least affected by this infection,” said Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

But he added: “New diseases may present in ways that surprise us, and clinicians need to be made aware of any emerging evidence of particular symptoms or of underlying conditions which could make a patient more vulnerable to the virus.”

Health / Coronavirus Patient Gives Birth At LUTH by DerickCO(m): 8:53pm On Apr 27, 2020
The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, says its medical team on Monday delivered a 40-year-old COVID-19 patient, of a baby girl.

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, says its medical team on Monday delivered a 40-year-old COVID-19 patient, of a baby girl.

The LUTH management made this known in its verified official twitter handle, @LUTHofficial, on Monday.

According to the tweet, the team comprises: doctors, anaesthetists and nurses.

It said: “A team of LUTH doctors, anaesthetists and nurses delivered a woman with COVID-19 of a baby girl this afternoon.

“The 40-year-old mother and 3.3kg baby are doing fine.

“Our gratitude goes to these gallant men and women and all warriors making the nation proud in the face of this scourge.”

Newsmen recalled that LUTH on April 19 said it had successfully delivered a 68-year-old woman of a set of twins, following an IVF conception.

He said the IVF and embryo transfer were done at a facility outside LUTH.

Mr Adeyemo further said the woman was, thereafter, referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed till she was delivered.

“This is the first in LUTH, Nigeria and Africa,” he said.
