Statement released
Former Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan forward Robinho has responded today to being sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault.
The news broke yesterday afternoon that the Brazilian had been given the hefty sentence and details started to emerge of what happened.
The offence came in January 2013 with the act coming against a young Albanian woman.
Robinho and five other men were accused of sexual assault towards the woman but Robinho has now defended himself.
Posting a picture stating ‘CLARIFICATION NOTE’ in bold letters, the caption read as follows:
“Relating to events of a few years ago, we would like to clarify that he already defended himself from the accusations, saying he had no involvement with the episode.”
“All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance.”
Whether this will have any effect on his sentence is yet to be seen, but reports did state the trial will go through an appeals stage.
That means that Robinho could still escape jail time even after the reports that have emerged.
Football Italia claims that:
“Although this is a guilty verdict and a nine-year prison sentence awarded, the Italian justice system includes several levels of appeal."
“Because of that, the verdict is effectively put on hold until the appeals process is completed and no sentence will be enforced until then.”
Time will tell if Robinho is truly found guilty or not.

Thousands of voters came out on

by - election in Mashi /Dutsi federal constituency in Katsina state
Voting began as early as 8 am in the presence of political party agents and security personnel.
An official of INEC , who pleaded anonymity , told NAN that both sensitive and the non - sensitive materials were supplied to polling units in good time .
He said the electoral officers had been adequately trained on the conduct of the election.
Malam Sani Mashi , an agent of the Peoples Democratic party attached to the Mashi Arewa polling unit , said he was satisfied with the conduct of the exercise .
He said agents of all the political parties had agreed not to allow anybody to mar the conduct of the election.
Hajiya Rabi Yakubu , a female voter , at Dutsi Central polling unit commended the massive turnout of women .
She called on women to continue to participate in elections not only as voters but also as contestants .
NAN reports that the by - election is to fill the vacant seat following the death of Sani Bello the member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives .

The latest political news on air as Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu​,​ has welcomed​ the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship aspirant, Uchechukwu Ogah,​ to work with him.
Fresh news report as this is contained in a letter he personally signed on Friday and sent to Ogah.
Recall that Ikpeazu’e election was affirmed by the Supreme Court ​last Friday.
A five-man bench of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, unanimously upheld Ikpeazu’s election as Abia State Governor​after dismissing Ogah’s appeal for
lack of merit.
In his reaction, Ogah said he had accepted the verdict and urged all the people of the state to support Ikpeazu as governor of the state.
The statement read, “On the 12th of May 2017, the Supreme Court of Nigeria gave their final verdict over my case with Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, the governor of Abia State. Even though a painful verdict, but as someone that believes in the rule of law and the judiciary, I have accepted the decision of the apex court in good faith.
“As the legal battle comes to an end with the Supreme Court’s declaration, I’m exceedingly happy today that in the course of this struggle, I never resorted to self-help nor encouraged my supporters to indulge in any form of violence either in my State or elsewhere.
“May I especially thank my teeming supporters for standing by me all through this journey and may I also use this golden opportunity to congratulate His Excellency, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, governor of Abia State and urge all Abians to join hands in supporting the Governor in order to move our dear state forward.”
In his letter, Ikpeazu said thanked Ogah for extending hand of friendship.

I write to personally acknowledge the message of congratulations sent to us by your good​ self following the final judicial imprimatur given to my mandate by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Friday, May 12, 2017 as the lawfully nominated and duly elected Governor of Abia State.
First, I wish to draw your attention to the fact that in my administration, the title HIS EXCELLENCY, as used in your letter is not applicable. This is a policy statement that has been in place since my inauguration, please.
As was widely reported in the media, as soon as the Supreme Court delivered their judgment, I immediately issued a statement wherein I urged all parties to sheath their swords and put the interest of our dear fledging state above narrow and personal political interests.

There is a report of another foiled suicide bomb attack near University of Maiduguri earlier today.
In a release by NEMA’s North East zone information officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim one male adult suicide bomber hid in the bush within the university community surrounding, supposedly trying to gain access into the university premises where students were gathering.
But unfortunately for him, the IED exploded and killed him. The explosion was said to have taken place at around 10am today, Saturday 20th may 2017.

No casualty was recorded and the suicide bomber’s corps has been deposited at Borno Specialist hospital.
It will be recalled that on thursday, an attempt to bomb the university’s female hostel by 3 male suicide bombers was also foiled by security operatives resulting in the three suicide bombers killing themselves.
