1. Conduct a thorough risk assessment
Before any lifting or rigging operation takes place, it’s crucial to conduct a thorough risk assessment. First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) are two critical skills that everyone should learn. These skills can help save lives in emergency situations and are essential for anyone who wants to be prepared for unexpected emergencies. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a caregiver, or just someone who wants to be prepared, learning first aid and CPR can be a valuable investment.

First Aid refers to the immediate assistance given to a person who has been injured or is suddenly taken ill. This assistance can be provided by anyone who has received proper training, and it can range from simple wound care to more complex procedures such as administering medication or performing CPR. Education / Workplace Safety: Ensuring A Secure And Healthy Work Environment by deslogenergyltd: 12:49pm On Mar 30, 2023
place safety is an important consideration for all organizations, regardless of industry or size. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), approximately 2.3 million workers die each year as a result of workplace accidents or occupational diseases, and an additional 317 million workers suffer from non-fatal accidents or illnesses. These statistics highlight the need for organizations to take workplace safety seriously and employ dedicated health and safety officers to ensure that their employees are protected from harm.

In fact, there are many stories of organizations that have faced serious consequences as a result of failing to prioritize workplace safety. For example, in 1984, a gas leak at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, killed thousands of people and injured hundreds of thousands more. The company responsible for the plant, Union Carbide, was widely criticized for its poor safety practices and lack of preparedness for such a disaster.

Similarly, in 2010, an explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers and resulted in one of the largest environmental disasters in history. An investigation into the incident found that the companies involved had ignored warning signs and failed to implement proper safety procedures. These incidents highlight the importance of having dedicated health and safety officers who can identify potential hazards and take proactive steps to prevent accidents from occurring. Read More

Business / 10 Benefits Of Iso Certification To Corporate Organizations by deslogenergyltd: 12:44pm On Nov 20, 2021
10 BENEFITS OF ISO CERTIFICATIONS TO CORPORATE ORGANIZATIONS

Achieving an ISO quality management certification can pay huge dividends for your business in improved efficiency, productivity and customer satisfaction.

But the benefits of ISO go far beyond your operations to every aspect of the business, including sales and marketing, strategic planning and employee engagement.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent, non-governmental organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety and efficiency of products, services and systems.

It requires you to set clear objectives for your business, standardize processes and explain them to your employees.

As a business owner, getting your organization certified helps your business in the following ways:

1. Improved Chance of Winning Contracts:
Having ISO certification can go a long way to helping a business to secure partnerships with both the public and private sectors. With public sector tenders for example, certification to ISO 9001 is a strong signal that a business is well-run and credible, removing the need for extensive due diligence. Similarly, many private sector organizations have made it a requirement for their suppliers to be certified to ISO 9001. It signifies that quality is taken seriously and can be relied on in all aspects of the business.

2. Better Customer Satisfaction:
One of the most important aspects of the ISO standard is tracking customer satisfaction and responding to any issues raised. Companies that seek and maintain ISO certification prove that they take this issue seriously.

3. Reduced Product or Service Problems:
ISO certified businesses are better prepared to deal with the unexpected. For instance, if a product is not up to scratch, there will be processes in place that help to ensure that the problem is dealt with efficiently and does not recur.

4. Better Management System:
Appropriate analysis and reporting is a key factor in running a business well. The ISO standard helps businesses to get this right.

5. Increased Consistency in Business Practices:
Implementing the practices required by the standard will offer the type of consistency that benefits everyone, including customers. It ensures that processes within a business are common and understood which helps employees be clearer on the tasks involved, rather than spending time thinking about what to do or even making things up.

6. Enhanced Employee Satisfaction and Job Security
Staff enjoy greater job satisfaction and feel more secure about their jobs in a business where processes are well-defined and clearly managed.

7. Lower Costs:
Achieving and maintaining certification to ISO 9001 can lead to lower insurance premiums. This is because insurers recognize that these businesses have appropriate processes and controls that reduce risks.

8. Streamlined Business Processes:
No business wants unnecessary paperwork and yet many are burdened by precisely that. The discipline inherent in the ISO standards means that business processes should be streamlined. Regular reviews mean that processes should not become flabby.

9. Continuous Improvement:
A good quality management system provides a solid foundation for improvements to be made year on year.

10. Overall Business Improvement
The aggregate effect of the nine individual benefits outlined above is an overall business improvement and consequently profit.

Nairaland / General / Quality Versus Quantity by deslogenergyltd: 2:17pm On Mar 29, 2019
QUALITY VERSUS QUANTITY......
Which one is more important?
(weekend discussion)

This is a basic concept that we all have been taught either through lessons or experience, so also we argue with ourselves over it whenever we are into any activity that the concept touches.

for clarity purpose
Quality is a measure of excellence or of a state of being. It describes something, either of how it was made, or how it is as compared to others.
Quantity, on the other hand, is the extent, size, or sum of something. It is countable or measurable, and can be expressed as a numerical value.

The main difference between quality and quantity is the fact that quality refers to the characteristic or feature of something, whereas quantity refers to the numerical value of something.

Quality is subjective, whereas quantity is not. Quality is subjective to each individual’s opinion. One person might think that something is of great quality, whereas another might think that it is of low quality. However, one cannot dispute quantity. If there are five things, then there are five things. One cannot claim that there are four or six.

Example
Quality: The dress is beautiful. The TV has great picture quality. The students are smart.

Quantity: The dress cost $4.99. The TV has a 1080p resolution. There are 30 students in the class.

The Big Question is as an individual, an employer, an employee, what is your take, which one is more preferred, which is more important, and why so?

***Drop your answers in the comment section and lets discuss on the subject matter***

Nairaland / General / Basic Workplace Safety Tips by deslogenergyltd: 12:16pm On Mar 28, 2019
Here are some basic Workplace Safety Tips Every Employee Should Know to help their Employer to create a workplace safety environment based on shared responsibility:

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings: This step requires identifying the particular hazards related to your job or workplace. Once you have learned these risks, you are able to keep clear of potential hazardous areas, and potential hazardous situations.

Keep Correct Posture To Protect Your Spine: If you work at a desk, keep your shoulders in line with your hips to avoid spinal problems. If you are picking or lifting things up, use correct form so your spinal column does not get hurt. Avoid stooping and twisting. If possible, always use ergonomic designed furniture and safety equipment so everything you need is within easy reach.

Take Regular Breaks: So many work-related injuries and illnesses occur because a worker is exhausted, burned out and not at alert to their surroundings. Taking regular breaks helps you stay fresh on the job activities. One trick to staying alert is to schedule the most difficult tasks when your concentration is best, like first thing in the morning.

Use Tools And Machines Properly: Take the proper precautionary measures when using tools, and never take shortcuts. Taking shortcuts is one of the leading cause of workplace injury. It is a huge safety risk to use one tool in place of another for a specific job. Using tools, the right and appropriate way greatly reduces the chance of workplace injury.

Keep Emergency Exits Easily Accessible: In case of an emergency, you will need quick and easy access to the exits. It is always and highly recommended to keep clear access to equipment shutoffs in case you need to quickly stop them from functioning.

Report Unsafe Conditions to Your Supervisor: Your supervisor needs to be always informed about any workplace safety hazards or risks. They are legally obligated to ensure their employees have a safe working environment and will take care of the unsafe conditions and make them safe for you and your coworkers.

Use Mechanical Aids Whenever Possible: Instead of trying to carry or lift something that is really heavy in an attempt to save time during your workday, take the extra minute to use a wheelbarrow, conveyor belt, crank or forklift. Too many injury risks are involved with trying to lift something that weighs too much.

Stay Sober: Around three percent of workplace fatalities occur due to alcohol and drugs. When a worker’s ability to exercise judgment, coordination, motor control, concentration or alertness is compromised, this leads to any number of risks for workplace injury and fatalities.

Reduce Workplace Stress: Stress can lead to depression and concentration problems. Common causes of workplace stress include long hours, heavy workload, job insecurity and conflicts with coworkers or managers. Take your concerns about workplace stress to your supervisor to see how they might help you address them.

Wear the Correct Safety Equipment: If you are not wearing the correct safety equipment for a task, you may be injured. Depending on the job, equipment like earplugs, earmuffs, hard hats, safety goggles, gloves or a full-face mask greatly reduce the risk of workplace injury.

Nairaland / General / Risk Management by deslogenergyltd: 10:41am On Mar 28, 2019
As a project manager or team member, you manage risk on a daily basis. It is one of the core actions you take daily. Learning how to apply a systematic risk management process, and putting into action the core basic risk management process becomes paramount. Then your projects will run more smoothly and be a positive experience for everyone involved.

A common definition of risk is an uncertain event that if it occurs, can have a positive or negative effect on a project’s goals. The potential for a risk to have a positive or negative effect is an important concept. Why? Because it is natural to fall into the trap of thinking that risks have inherently negative effects. If you are also open to those risks that create positive opportunities, you can make your project smarter, streamlined and more profitable. Think of the adage –“Accept the inevitable and turn it to your advantage.” That is what you do when you mine project risks to create opportunities.

Uncertainty is the core of any risk. You may be unsure if an event or risk is likely to occur or not. Also, you may be uncertain of what its consequences would be if it did occur. Its likelihood – that is the probability of an event occurring, and consequence and the impact or outcome of an event, are the two components that characterize the level of the risk.

All risk management processes usually or more often the same basic steps, although the description of the steps might differ in different organizations. Together these 5 risk management process steps combine to deliver a simple and effective risk management process.

Step 1: Identify the Risk. You and your team uncover, recognize, evaluate and describe risks that might affect your project or its outcomes. There are a number of identification and evaluating techniques you can use to find project risks. Here the Project Risk Register is being developed.

Step 2: Analyze the risk. Once risks are identified you evaluate the likelihood and consequence of each risk. You develop a general idea of the nature of the risk and its potential to affect project goals and objectives. This information is inputted into your Project Risk Register.

Step 3: Evaluate or Rank the Risk. You evaluate or rank the risk by determining the risk level, which is the combination of likelihood and consequence. You make decisions about whether the risk is practically acceptable or whether it is serious enough that calls for immediate attention. These risk rankings are also added to your Project Risk Register.

Step 4: Treat the Risk. This can also be called Risk Response Planning. This is where you assess your highest ranked risks and set out a plan to treat or modify these risks to achieve acceptable risk levels. How can you minimize the probability of the negative risks as well as enhancing the opportunities? You create risk mitigation strategies, preventive plans and contingency plans in this step. Then you add the risk treatment measures for the highest ranking or most serious risks to your Project Risk Register.

Step 5: Monitor and Review the risk. This is where you take your Project Risk Register and use it to monitor, track and review risks. Risk is about uncertainty. If you put a framework around that uncertainty, then you effectively reduce the risk level in your project. Which means that, you can move much more confidently to achieve your project goals. By identifying, evaluating and managing a comprehensive list of project risks, unpleasant surprises and barriers can be mitigated as low as reasonably practicable and excellent opportunities discovered.

The risk management process also helps to resolve problems when they occur, because those problems have been put into considerations, and plans to treat them have already been developed and agreed. You avoid impulsive reactions and going into “fire-fighting” mode to rectify problems that could have been anticipated. This makes for happier, less stressed project teams and stakeholders. The result is that you minimize the impacts of project threats and capture the opportunities that occur.

Nairaland / General / ANGER: Just One Letter Short Of DANGER by deslogenergyltd: 2:58pm On Mar 27, 2019
SAFETY WORK TIPS

If you have angry workers in your department or you yourself are angry, you may end up reporting more injuries on the job. A recent study by the Annals of Family Medicine found that high levels of anger increase the risk of injury. Angry people are more likely to sustain injuries serious enough to require emergency medical care, and the risk is higher for men than women, says lead author Daniel Vinson of the University of Missouri.

The study, in the Annals of Family Medicine, found that nearly 32% of all the patients reported being irritable just before they were injured, 18% reported being angry and 13% reported being hostile.

Anger more than quadrupled a person's odds of being injured, while being hostile increased those odds six fold. For men, Vinson says, the link was particularly clear. Another study that followed 100 drivers for two weeks linked episodes of anger with "near accidents". Two additional studies found that angry people were more likely to have car crashes or sustain football injuries.

There is little doubt that anger can be a contributing factor in workplace injuries, but what do you do about it? Here are some tips:

Consciously determine to be calm: Do not react think! Remember your goals and respond appropriately. Choose to remain calm!

Communicate: When someone upsets you, tell him or her. Calmly talk to them about how you feel about their words or actions. Learn to express yourself better -- clear and composed. Choose to!

Remove yourself: Get away from the scene until you can respond without anger. Your success will not happen overnight. Take it one-step at a time, one day at a time.

Remember to relax. Relaxation exercises or music can be helpful. Keep in mind you can reach out to someone you trust for help. Choose to!

Frequently take time for yourself: Do something you enjoy like walking in the park, swimming, or seeing a feel-good movie. Do something nice for someone you admire. It is okay to feel good about yourself. Choose to!

Look for the positives: Do not dwell on the negatives. "Don't sweat the small stuff." Do not worry about things that are out of your personal control. This is difficult, but an attitude and behavior that can be learned!

Nairaland / General / Work Place Emergencies. How To Respond To Them by deslogenergyltd: 2:30pm On Mar 27, 2019
Nobody expects an emergency or disaster -- especially one that affects them, their employees, and their business personally. Yet the truth is that emergencies and disasters can strike anyone, anytime, and anywhere. You and your employees could be forced to evacuate your company when you least expect it.

Any unforeseen situation that might threaten your employees, customers, or the public could turn into an emergency. Emergencies can be natural or man-made and include such things as: Floods, Hurricanes/tornadoes/high winds, Earthquakes, Fire, Toxic gas releases, Chemical spills, Radiological accidents, Contagious illness, Explosions, Civil disturbances and riots, Workplace violence, etc.

Such situations may disrupt or shut down your operations, or they may cause physical or environmental damage. While no one expects any of these events to occur or affect them, their employees, and/or their business, emergencies and disasters can strike anyone, anytime, and anywhere. The best way to protect yourself, your workers, and your business is to develop a well thought-out emergency action plan to guide you and your employees in the event of an emergency.

How to Respond to a Workplace Emergency

The fact remains that accidents and emergencies can happen in any workplace. Is your business ready and able to respond to such an event? If the thought seems disconcerting, do not worry. There are steps that businesses can take to augment their response strategies. Staying calm, ensuring adherence to plans and protocol, and enhanced follow-up are just three ways any enterprise can effectively and efficiently respond.

1. Stay Calm
This is a basic element of responding to any challenging situation. Staying calm is always key. Failing to do so can lead to poor decision-making and can potentially intensify the incident. It is easier to stay calm if you have confidence in your colleagues and your organization’s response plans. It is easier said than done, but staying calm during an emergency is the best way to make sure that the right choices are made.
There are certain practices and tactics people can take to calm themselves, such as deep breaths, meditation and calming visualization. Having a sound approach and stable mind is key in tackling some of the issues in the workplace that can be quite complex and demand a great deal of your attention. In some instances, an automated safety plan can be implemented to ease the burden of these events. Nevertheless, it is important for associates and staff to be able to function under pressure. Learning how to stay calm and doing so in the event of an emergency can boost morale and reduce the likelihood of excessive damage.

2. Follow Plans & Protocols
A key to safety awareness is adherence to all relevant regulations. On a local, federal or organizational level, these directives are applied on a daily basis. Ensuring you are in compliance with these directives can prevent liabilities while also bolstering safety awareness. Plans and policies often align with these directives, and abiding by them in a time of crisis is more often than not a strong way to confront circumstances that can seem quite overwhelming at the time. By remaining calm and following all relevant procedures, you will set the stage for a successful follow-up and resolution process.
By making sure your safety program is in a top-notch state, you will set yourself up to deal with emergencies in the appropriate manner.

3. Follow Up & Resolve
Examining what causes incidents is key in preventing future problems. Following up with leadership and management after an issue has been resolved is a prudent way to determine what could be done better if the same event were to materialize. In addition to examining the root causes, it is imperative to also ascertain how those who were involved in the incident were affected. To truly resolve the matters at hand, one must break down the response strategy and discern what went right and what went wrong. These critiques often lead to the establishment of better practices, which in turn are instrumental in promoting a transformative and safety-focused work culture.

Nairaland / General / Project Management by deslogenergyltd: 11:55am On Mar 21, 2019
At the mention of project management, the basic mindset of individuals go to the thought of this is about management, so therefore it belong to mostly individuals who are in management line.

Sadly project management is beyond that, project management as a skill and a process is found in all spheres of life and all career sectors.

When we talk about project, a university student or graduate will suddenly have a thought of the final year course that determines how much you have learnt in your course of study to pick a topic from there and present facts and figures and possible development or ideas on that topic. That could be a basic description of a project.

According to Project Management Institute (PMI) A project is “It's a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”

A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources. And a project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. So a project team often includes people who don’t usually work together – sometimes from different organizations and across multiple geographies. (PMI)

What is Project Management?

Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. (PMI)
It has always been practiced informally, but began to emerge as a distinct profession in the mid-20th century. PMI’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) identifies its recurring elements:

Project management processes fall into five groups:
• Initiating
• Planning
• Executing
• Monitoring and Controlling
• Closing

Project management knowledge draws on ten areas:
• Integration
• Scope
• Time
• Cost
• Quality
• Procurement
• Human resources
• Communications
• Risk management
• Stakeholder management

All management is concerned with these, of course. But project management brings a unique focus shaped by the goals, resources and schedule of each project.

Some other related words to Project management are

Program, which is “A group of projects. There are several projects carried out in an organization and managing these projects independently becomes a challenge for the organization. Hence, a group of related projects is combined together in a program.”

Portfolio, “It is a group of programs and individual projects that are implemented to achieve a specific strategic business goal.”

Why Is Project Management Important?

1. Strategic Alignment
Project management is important because it ensures what is being delivered, is right, and will deliver real value against the business opportunity.

2. Leadership
Project management is important because it brings leadership and direction to projects.

3. Clear Focus & Objectives
Project management is important because it ensures there’s a proper plan for executing on strategic goals.

4. Realistic Project Planning
Project management is important because it ensures proper expectations are set around what can be delivered, by when, and for how much.

5. Quality Control
Projects management is important because it ensures the quality of whatever is being delivered, consistently hits the mark.

6. Risk Management
Project management is important because it ensures risks are properly managed and mitigated against to avoid becoming issues.

7. Orderly Process
Project management is important because it ensures the right people do the right things, at the right time – it ensures proper project process is followed throughout the project lifecycle.

8. Continuous Oversight
Project management is important because it ensures a project’s progress is tracked and reported properly.

9. Subject Matter Expertise
Project management is important because someone needs to be able to understand if everyone’s doing what they should.

10. Managing and Learning from Success and Failure
Project management is important because it learns from the successes and failures of the past.

Nairaland / General / First Aid by deslogenergyltd: 11:16am On Mar 21, 2019
First Aid is an Integral Part of the Health, Safety and Environment Professional Course, it is part of the recovery measures to preserve lives in the release of a hazard and or occurence of an accident.

First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a serious illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available. (Wikipedia)

Aims

The primary goal of first aid is to prevent death or serious injury from worsening. The key aims of first aid can be summarized in three key points, sometimes known as 'the three Ps' (3P) :

1. Preserve life
The overriding aim of all medical care which includes first aid, is to save lives and minimize the threat of death.

2. Prevent further harm
Prevent further harm also sometimes called prevent the condition from worsening, or danger of further injury, this covers both external factors, such as moving a patient away from any cause of harm, and applying first aid techniques to prevent worsening of the condition, such as applying pressure to stop a bleed becoming dangerous.

3. Promote recovery
First aid also involves trying to start the recovery process from the illness or injury, and in some cases might involve completing a treatment, such as in the case of applying a plaster to a small wound.
It is important to note that first aid is not medical treatment and cannot be compared with what a trained medical professional provides. First aid involves making common sense decisions in best interest of an injured person.

Note: The decision to act appropriately with first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Begin by introducing yourself to the injured or ill person. Explain that you are a first aid provider and are willing to help. The person must give you permission to help them; do not touch them until they agree to be helped. If you encounter a confused person or someone who is critically injured or ill, you can assume that they would want you to help them. This is known as “implied consent.”

The first aid method of DRSABCD

First aid is as easy as ABC – airway, breathing and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). In any situation, apply the DRSABCD Action Plan.

DRSABCD stands for:

Danger – always check the danger to you, any bystanders and then the injured or ill person. Make sure you do not put yourself in danger when going to the assistance of another person.

Response – is the person conscious? Do they respond when you talk to them, touch their hands or squeeze their shoulder?

Send for help – call emergency. Don’t forget to answer the questions asked by the operator.

Airway – Is the person’s airway clear? Is the person breathing?
If the person is responding, they are conscious and their airway is clear, assess how you can help them with any injury.
If the person is not responding and they are unconscious, you need to check their airway by opening their mouth and having a look inside. If their mouth is clear, tilt their head gently back (by lifting their chin) and check for breathing. If the mouth is not clear, place the person on their side, open their mouth and clear the contents, then tilt the head back and check for breathing.

Breathing – check for breathing by looking for chest movements (up and down). Listen by putting your ear near to their mouth and nose. Feel for breathing by putting your hand on the lower part of their chest. If the person is unconscious but breathing, turn them onto their side, carefully ensuring that you keep their head, neck and spine in alignment. Monitor their breathing until you hand over to the ambulance officers.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) – if an adult is unconscious and not breathing, make sure they are flat on their back and then place the heel of one hand in the centre of their chest and your other hand on top. Press down firmly and smoothly (compressing to one third of their chest depth) 30 times. Give two breaths.

Defibrillator – for unconscious adults who are not breathing, apply an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is available. An AED is a machine that delivers an electrical shock to cancel any irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), in an effort get the normal heart beating to re-establish itself. The devices are very simple to operate. Just follow the instructions and pictures on the machine, and on the package of the pads, as well as the voice prompts. If the person responds to defibrillation, turn them onto their side and tilt their head to maintain their airway. Some AEDs may not be suitable for children.

Nairaland / General / Occupational Safety by deslogenergyltd: 11:04am On Mar 21, 2019
Industrial, Organizational and Companies workplaces are dangerous, for example: Manufacturing facilities have machines with moving parts, dangerous tools, and ergonomic hazards. At construction worksites, falls, moving vehicles, and heavy materials are common. Warehouses experience a lot of forklift traffic, lifting hazards, and even slip and fall risks. Accidents happen, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. With some preparation and planning, employers and employees can identify the hazards in their facilities and take steps to reduce the risk of injuries, illnesses, and even fatalities. The first step to increasing safety is getting the information you need to get started.

Safety to a “layman” is the act of being safe and at the mention of safety individuals mindset goes to that it is meant for certain persons, careers or skills as the case may be. But safety is every mans business. “Every Individual is his/her own safety officer”

But safety is defined as “the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected from harm or other non-desirable outcomes. Safety can also refer to the control of recognized hazards in order to achieve an acceptable level of risk.” (wikipedia)

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY?

It refers to the management of all operations and events within an industry in order to protect its employees and assets by minimizing hazards, risks, accidents, and near misses.
A safe work environment is highly a productive one. No matter the size or type of the business, occupational (workplace) safety procedures are a necessity for all staff. Safety measures protect employees as well as equipment and business property. Avoiding or minimizing injuries and damage to equipment and facilities will result in fewer expenses and more profit for a business as well as business reputation and value goes up.

Occupational safety covers a number of issues and topics affecting safety of personnel and the integrity of equipment in a particular industry.

The following topics are generally discussed:

General Safety – General aspects of safety which are common to all organizations, companies, firms and Industries.

Occupational Health – Particularly associated with the occupation

Process and Production Safety

Material Safety

Workplace Safety – Safety issues directly related to the workplace setting

Fire Safety

Electrical Safety – Arising from the equipment used

Building and Structural Safety – Including installations as per existing building code

Environmental Safety – Concerns the direct and indirect environmental impact of the industry

Nairaland / General / Occupational Health by deslogenergyltd: 10:34am On Mar 21, 2019
Deslog Energy Services Limited as a safety organization, occupational health is one of our top priorities which is found under the professional course Health Safety and Environment (HSE).

According to Statistics, to the best available estimates 100 million workers are injured and 200 000 die each year in occupational accidents and 68-157 million new cases of occupational disease arc attributed to hazardous exposures or workloads. Such high numbers of severe health outcomes contribute to one of the most important impacts on the health of the world’s population. Occupational injuries and diseases play an even more important role in developing countries where 70% of the working population of the world lives. By affecting the health of the working population, occupational injuries and diseases have profound effects on work productivity and on the economic and social well-being of workers, their families and dependents. According to recent estimates, the cost of work-related health loss and associated productivity loss may amount to several per cent of the total gross national product of the countries of the world. (WHO)
Health according to WHO “Is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

What is Occupational Health?

Occupational health refers to the identification and control of the risks arising from physical, chemical, and other workplace hazards in order to establish and maintain a safe and healthy working environment. These hazards may include chemical agents and solvents, heavy metals such as lead and mercury, physical agents such as loud noise or vibration, and physical hazards such as electricity or dangerous machinery. (NHIS)

Occupational health is a part of Health Safety and Evironment Programs that focuses on the physical and mental wellbeing of employees in the workplace.

The aim of occupational health is to prevent work-related illness and injury by:

• encouraging safe working practices;
• ergonomics (studying how you work and how you could work better);
• monitoring the health of the workforce;
• supporting the management of sickness absence.

Why Occupational Health?

Proper attention to workers' health and safety has extensive benefits:
• healthy workers are productive and raise healthy families; thus healthy workers are a key strategy.
• safe workplaces contribute to sustainable development, which is the key to poverty reduction;
• the processes of protecting workers, surrounding communities and the environment for future generations have important common elements, such as pollution control and exposure reduction;
• much pollution and many environmental exposures that are hazardous to health arise from industrial processes, that may be influenced by occupational health and safety programmes;
• occupational health can contribute to improving the employability of workers, through workplace (re)design, maintenance of a healthy work environment, training and retraining, assessment of work demands, medical diagnosis, health screening and assessment of functional capacities;
• occupational health is fundamental to public health, for it is increasingly clear that major diseases need workplace programmes as part of the disease control strategy.
