ProgrammingRe: Mention Your Price And Stop Asking Clients Their Budget! by DevLaive(op): 12:06pm On May 22, 2025
MindHacker9009:
If a client says they want an e-commerce website and, when asked about their budget, they respond with ₦10,000, how would you respond to them? Is it:
1. That's fine.
2. You need to increase your budget.

Will it not be better to just give the client a quote based on the how long it will take you for the coding X your rate per hour, plus hosting and support cost.
Thank you for this! It's better this way. It's my time and energy for goodness' sake.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. But I'd rather present a range of prices to give my potential clients options. I don't have to tailor down my services based on a client's budget. It won't speak well of me if it turns out poorly. Not because of my incompetence, but because of client's budget.

You're assuming your potential client will be technically inclined to know all these?? If they have the technical knowledge, they probably won't contact you. It's your responsibility to break down everything and give them price options.

Here is where costing in cost accounting is needed. It should be the programmer that should give the client a quote. This can best be done by how long it will take x your rate per hour plus the cost of deployment and support.
Exactly... Give the client options based on what you know. Not to ask a client their budget. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Not entirely true. If a client gives you a specification of what they want in the project, the onus lies on you to give a price range. If they accept to pay after negotiating, then you've won the project. But asking for a budget and then delivering the project based on their budget doesn't speak well of you. People will see the project and judge it based on what they see.

If a project is poorly done due to the client's budget, people will conclude that you as the developer lack the skills and aren't professional. They won't ask the budget.

I have politely declined several projects not because I didn't want the money. But because the money is not worth the energy I'll put in to make the work perfect. I can't just deliver a project for the money of it. I love doing good things.

Wbuser21:
There is this idea social media has given, that asking a clients budget automatically means the client will tell you an amount that is way higher than the original price.

But from my experience as a fullstack developer when i ask this question the immediate response is "how much do you charge for the website"

Its kind of like a trick that no one ever falls for and if anyone falls for it the likeliness of them budgetting more than the worth is almost 0

Even if i go to buy something today which in most cases i already know the price range from what others have informed me, if anyone asks me my budget

1. i will definately not tell them because im not stupid instead i will call a ridiculously low price for you.
2. It will show me that this person is not trustworthy because he is trying to trick me.
3. This person is still new if not he would have come to a conclusion that this doesnt work.

Rather tell the person your price even if he planned to spend more, the fact you saved him that cost the customer will come back or even refer you to a friend.

Business is about building customers not cashing out instantly
Thank you. You really nailed more on my points above. It's just sad how new and inexperienced developers feel making money entails outsmarting potential clients.
ProgrammingMention Your Price And Stop Asking Clients Their Budget! by DevLaive(op): 7:06pm On May 15, 2025
I've seen this trend among developers/designers and almost everyone in the tech space. When approached with a gig/job, instead of mentioning what they will charge for it, they end up asking the client questions like: "What is your budget?", "How much do you want to pay?", etc.

In my opinion, questions like these mostly come from non-professionals. A professional who knows their worth, values their time, energy and resources -- will be straight to mention what they want to charge for a project.

You know better for goodness's sake. You're in the know of what the project will cost because you know what is involved. It's your skills that will be put to use!

It's better you mention your price and then let the client negotiate their way through. The question: "what's your budget" presents you as being open to any offer. Only hungry and desperate developers do that.

Stop it and be professional.
ProgrammingLaravel Framework: Tips For Absolute Beginners by DevLaive(op): 11:54pm On May 07, 2025
The Laravel PHP framework in a nutshell is an very powerful framework. According to Taylor Otwell himself, developers will be very surprised at what they can build with the Laravel framework.

Despite its a huge and sophisticated framework, Laravel really makes crafting applications with PHP very easy and very fast.

But how do you learn it if you're a beginner? Here are my tips for absolute beginners:

0. Learn the basics of HTML. This is always the starting point. PHP itself renders content using HTML. So learning HTML is where it starts.

1. Learn the basics of PHP. It is a server-side language and must therefore be rendered on the server. So learn how to write some PHP code and render it using a server.

2. Learn and deeply understand PHP Namespaces. Laravel uses PHP namespaces a lot and you'll need to understand how it works to be able to use the Framework.

3. Get comfortable with the command line interface (CLI). We are used to doing things using the graphical user interface. But the CLI is actually very powerful. You'll need to understand the basics of the command line interface in order to use Laravel.

4. Understand the concept of MVC - Model, View and Controller. This is the architecture that Laravel uses. The model interacts with your database. The Controller handles and processes HTTP requests and business logics; while the View handles data presentation.

5. Learn Git and GitHub. This skill will be needed when it's time to deploy your Laravel application to a cloud hosting provider such as Laravel Forge. So learning Git will be extremely helpful.

6. Read the official Laravel Documentation. That's where all you need to know about the framework can be found in details. No summaries, just full raw information. So read it.

7. Start building stuffs. Yes! Start with smaller projects and as your skills improve, start building larger applications.

There you have them! My personal roadmap to learning the amazing Laravel framework.

just d script is enough... I am a web designer with a degree from India... I don't need someone to design for me. I only need the script for personal reasons. Preferably, DepositController.php
Everything is not about "design". I am not talking about "designing" the website. I am talking about developing it from scratch. Sometimes, script vendors remove certain files from a script thereby making it incomplete. If the only file you need is the DepositController.php, then all I need is a brief study of the entire script in order to implement the deposit functionality. But all I am saying is I can build everything from ground up if u want me to.

ProgrammingDo Not Learn Programming If You Don't Enjoy Solving Problems! by DevLaive(op): 9:21pm On Mar 28, 2025
A friend recently asked me: "This coding stuff, how do I learn it?". I asked him why he wanted to learn "coding". The hilarious response he gave was, "So that I will get jobs and earn high money na like other people do". I told him that as sad as it sounds to the ear, no one pays anybody just for coding.

"What do you mean?", he asked. I repeated it again to him that no one pays anyone just for "coding". He looked so confused, expecting to hear more from me. What I told him next is what I am about to share here in summary.

Nobody, company, or organization will just hire people to come and sit down and write "code" that DOESN'T ADDRESS OR SOLVE PROBLEMS. You can read that again if you want to.

A lot of people "write code" just for coding sake, but that code doesn't solve a problem. And once you can't figure out a real world problem and try to "code" a solution to it, then forget it. You'll just be "coding" maybe to impress people or for the fun of it.

Individuals, organisations and companies face different problems on regular basis. Therefore they won't hire a person just because s/he knows how to "write code". They'll hire an experienced person because s/he knows how to use his coding skills to solve their problems.

It's as simple as that!

This applies to all tech fields, be it data analysis, web development, mobile app development, UI/UX design; you name it! All you need to have is a burning desire to solve problems.

And interestingly, if you enjoy solving problems, you'll enjoy programming. But if you don't enjoy solving problems, then programming will look like a chore to you.

There will be moments in your career as a programmer when a bug in your code will break things. Your ability to stay focused, demonstrate patience and come up with a solution is what sets you aside from the regular "code writers".

If solving problems isn't your thing, then forget about programming because you'll lose interest very quickly even before you finish the basics of programming.

Happy programming!
Webmasters5 Things To Know Before Hiring A Web Or Mobile App Developer For Your Projec by DevLaive(op):
Most web or mobile application projects never get to completion not because of lack of funds, but because the project owners never really hired the right developers. While skills and experience are very important in getting a project delivered, they are not the only things you should look at when looking at hiring a developer.

As a web developer myself, I have had the opportunity to work on a few projects for clients and I have also had the privilege to supervise some projects for clients in recent times. And in doing this, I have learnt a lot. So I felt I should highlight a few things you should consider before hiring a web developer, of course purely from my experience.

What I am about to share will help you as a project owner to avoid regrets while also ensuring your project is delivered as expected.

#1 Understand that it's not just about skills or years of experience of a developer

One of the things most project owners or hiring managers look out for is years of experience and skills set in the field. These are necessary parameters to look out for when considering to hire a developer for your project. But people can lie just to impress you. And you can't determine how many years of experience a person has simply by looking at the previous projects they completed or the places they have worked. The era of AI has made almost everyone appear to be "really smart". It's important to look for years of experience and skills in a developer, but remember that people can lie their way out just to secure a job/gig.

#2 Understand that most developers work remotely

The way people work generally has changed overtime. Most developer now prefer to work within the comfort of their homes without the hassle of waking up in the morning, dressing up and heading to work. You should not expect to hire a developer and then demand that they come to your own location in order to work. This might work but it's rare!

#3 Look out for good oral and written communication

There are developers who are highly skilled and experienced, but lack effective oral and written communication skills. You don't want to work with such persons because there is nothing as frustrating as trying to explain something to someone in the simplest terms and yet they can't understand. Imagine trying to explain an important feature you'd like to have your application to such a developer and they can't understand you. Or on the other hand, the developer lacks the ability to explain to you why something would or would not work. It can be frustrating. Also think about project documentation ! What if you need a documentation for your project? How will such a developer write it for you? Would you need to hire another developer to study the code base and then write the documentation for it? That'll be double expenses on you.

#4 See the project delivery timeframe as tentative

A lot of the times, project owners are so concerned about when a project would be completed. While this is normal, it often leads to disappointment and sometimes conflicts. Most projects are novel or completely unique. What I mean by this is that a lot of the time, your project might be something the developer has never worked on before. Or maybe a slight variant of something they have worked on before. So even if they told you it will be completed in 3 months, take it with a pinch of salt.

#5 Never be forced to mention your budget

Yes, a lot of the time, some developers will ask to know about your budget for a project. While this is very common in the tech space, I personally don't subscribe to it. A true developer who knows their worth and who truly understands the task at hand, will take responsibility for deciding what the project would cost from start to finish. Even if they won't give you an accurate amount, they can simply estimate knowing that there might be other aspects of the project they may not have knowledge about. For example, it's better for a developer to say something like: "This project will cost between #500k to #800k to build". This gives you the opportunity as a project owner to see ahead if it's something you can afford.

There you have them, the 5 things to consider before hiring a developer for your project. There are other things worth considering, but in my opinion, these are some of the most important ones.

For your web or mobile application related projects, you can contact me let's work on it together. I believe every project should be fun to work with and not a burden.

Based on the numerous security issues I found on their website, I advised this company (name withheld) some months ago to hire me to rebuild their tax collection project from scratch. They declined, claiming they don't have enough money. I just laughed. grin

Now here is the picture of a critical error on the website, showing the database connection credentials. Which is really a serious issue.

That's what most people get, when they decide to hire cheap developers or "script sellers" claiming to be developers.

Oga o
Trust some of these people at your own risk. I can't remember the number of times I've spent my precious time either debugging a custom script I didn't write myself only for the so-called client to either snub me or make it look like they don't need the job done again. You know how painful that can be, especially for a script without documentation or at least in-line comments.

Unless for really trusted and returning clients, I demand 50% commitment before even opening my IDE or Code Editor. That way, I don't loss completely if their demons arise in them to not continue the project for reasons best known to them.
