ABUJA – The Supreme Court has okayed the convicted General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Rev. King to die by hanging.

In a unanimous judgment Friday afternoon, a seven-man panel of Justices ‎of the apex court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, upheld the death sentence that was earlier handed to Ezeugo by the Lagos State High Court.

Consequently, the court in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, dismissed the appeal the convicted clergy lodged before it.

Justice Ngwuta who noted that “the ‎facts of the case could have been lifted from horror film”, resolved all the 12 issues Ezeugo raised in his appeal.”

“This appeal has no merit. The judgement of the court of appeal is hereby affirmed. The prison sentence that was earlier handed to the appellant is no longer relevant in view of the death sentence passed on him”, Justice Ngwuta held.

It will be recalled that Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging on January 11, 2007, for the alleged murder of his church member, Ann Uzoh. He was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.

The charge against him was at the instance of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

During the trial, the prosecution had argued that the convict poured petrol on the diseased, Uzor and five others. Uzoh died on August 2, 2006, exactly 11 days after the incident.

In her judgment, trial Justice Joseph Oyewole who is now a Justice of the Court of Appeal at Calabar, said there was sufficient evidence linking the accused person to the commission of the crime.

Consequently, Justice Oyewole convicted and sentenced Ezeugo to 20 years imprisonment for the attempted murder and death by hanging for the offence of murder.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, Ezeugo took the case before the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal.

The condemned clergy, in his notice of appeal dated January 16, 2007, prayed the appellate court to set aside the judgment.

Aside 16 grounds of appeal he raised through his lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, he was subsequently granted leave to argue additional 16 grounds based an amended notice of appeal he filed on June 15, 2008.

Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident.

He insisted that the deceased, Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries.

Ojo said the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had tendered statements which stated that Ezeugo was not responsible for the burns that led to Uzoh’s death.

He alleged that the trial Judge refused to admit in evidence, the statements he said exonerated Ezeugo of the crime.

The lawyer further contended had those “vital exhibits” been admitted rather than expunged by the trial judge, they would have operated to cast serious doubt on the case of the prosecution.

He maintained that Justice Oyewole’s refusal to admit the exhibits in evidence “occasioned a great miscarriage of justice” against his client.

Meanwhile, after due consideration of the case, a three-man panel of justices of the appellate court, in a lead judgment that was delivered by Justice Fatimo Akinbami, dismissed Ezeugo’s appeal and upheld the high court verdict.

The other members of the appellate court panel that equally concurred with the lower court’s verdict were Justices Amina Augie and Ibrahim Saulawa.

Determined to save his life, Rev Ezeugo lodged an appeal before the Supreme Court.

His appeal was challenged by the Lagos state government which through its Attorney General, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem and Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Idowu Alakija, urged the apex court to dismiss it and uphold the concurrent verdicts of the two lower court

The Presidency yesterday assured the Ijaw that it has nothing against them and therefore has no intention whatsoever harass or persecute them.

But it warned that whoever violates the law should be ready to face the consequences.

The Presidency was responding to suggestion by Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, that the Buhari administration is harassing his people.

He cited the trial of ex-militant leader Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo for theft and money laundering and the cancellation of the proposed Maritime University in Delta State.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) expressed similar sentiments yesterday.



Speaking to The Nation on the phone last night, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said it was untrue to say the administration is out to punish any ethnic group in the country.

He said: “Anybody who is a follower of events in the country knows that this administration persecutes nobody.

“The administration is just asking all Nigerians to do the right thing and anybody that goes contrary to the law will answer, irrespective of where the person comes from.

“So if anybody says a particular group is being targeted for attack or assault or persecution, right thinking Nigerians know that that is not true.”

Chief Clark in the open letter to Buhari described Tompolo as a gentleman who could not have been responsible for the recent pipeline attacks in Delta State.

He said: “In the course of my interactions with these militant leaders, I discovered that Tompolo is one of the most responsible and peace-loving militant leaders. This was also observed by the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and late President Umaru Musa Ya’Ardua.

“That was also one of the reasons why during one of the discussions I had with the former President, Chief Obasanjo in February, 2007, he said to me that he learnt that Tompolo was not well educated, that he was wondering what appointment or position could be given to him to keep him engaged and to effect permanent peace in the area.

“I suggested to him that because of his (Tompolo’s) dexterity, he should for a payment, be engaged to provide surveillance for the oil pipelines and supervise oil installations together with his colleagues in the various communities.”

He condemned the pipeline vandalization that trailed the arrest order issued against Tompolo last week by a Federal High Court in Lagos after the ex-militant failed to show up to answer charges for theft and money laundering.

Clark said the perpetrators of the sabotage should “be fished out and punished for their actions.”

He added: “On the other hand, however, whilst not making a case for Tompolo, I do not think that he will be part of such dastardly acts.

“Mr. President should please take time and look at the indices of cases of pipeline vandalism between 2014 and today.

“I will plead with Mr. President to investigate this matter and treat it strategically.”

Clark faulted government’s decision to discontinue work on the Nigerian Maritime University.

Clark said: “Tompolo is one of the owners of Mieka Dive Training Institute Limited/Gte. The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) entered into an agreement with the institute to purchase the institute covering an expanse of 6.597 hectares of well sand-filled land together with all the structures thereon, for the sum of N13,072,564,822.00 (thirteen billion, seventy two million, five hundred & sixty four thousand, eight hundred & twenty two naira only), as the take-off campus for the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko.”

He said: “This legitimate transaction was approved by the Federal Executive Council at its 34th Executive Council, EC; meeting presided over by the former President, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.”

Clark took exception to a statement by Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi who was quoted as saying: “who will attend the university (Maritime University)? How many parents will allow their children to go to such place where it proposed to site the university…”

The Ijaw leader said: “If this statement is true, it is very insulting, callous and vindictive on the people by Mr. Rotimi Amaechi. It is all aimed at executing his plans of personal vendetta against the people of the Niger Delta.

“This is unacceptable to the people. I strongly advise him to retrace his steps and reconcile with the people. He is appointed as Minister to represent Rivers State (Niger Delta people), based on constitutional provision.”

Apparently taking a cue from Chief Clark’s open letter the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) yesterday accused the Federal Government of singling out their ethnic group for persecution and asked President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest the situation.

IYC spokesman, Eric Omare, told AFP: “Our position is that due process should be followed. We support an anti-corruption war that is done within the ambit of the law.

“We seriously oppose selective prosecution and political victimization.”

The IYC condemned the pipeline vandalization but also claimed that the military had invaded several Ijaw communities in Delta State, destroying properties and causing injuries.

“The Ijaw people are not at war with the federal government. We call on the military to exercise restraint in their actions. There is no basis to attack innocent villagers,” said Omare.

THE destination was Inagbe Grand Beach Resort on one of the islands that dot the Lagos lagoon waterway heading to Badagry. The take-off point was the jetty along Queens Drive, Ikoyi where a luxury boat latched to the jetty bobbed to the rise and fall of the waves on the lagoon. Each member of the team made his or her way to the boat, collected a life jacket and gingerly stepped into the boat.

The leather settee felt comfortable. The boat paraded a 1, 000 horse power twin outboard engine. The last person to come on board was a tall, young man in navy blue shirt and white chinos trousers. He had stayed back to ensure that everyone was comfortably accommodated. He boarded the vessel and glanced round to make sure everybody was comfortable and safe. Then he ordered the boat operator to launch the trip.

We have mostly foreigners who come in here. We realise that we have a very huge market, even people from outside the shores of the country, we know, come to see what is happening here. Outside countries like Gambia, Seychelles, even France; they depend on tourism. So, we have very huge potentials in Nigeria, and we realise that the potentials are enormous for us to actually capitalise on.

“The objective of this, like I said earlier, is to let it be reachable to a typical Nigerian. What do we mean? We are going to come up with a scheme that has actually been tested, we want to now come up with it and launch it for the public. It is going to be on point basis. The point basis simply means: when you sign on to have an Explore card, you want to come and have an experience and explore the entire resort. The minimum point you can access is the 25,000 points. Each point is being given at two naira. It can be converted for our foreign visitors to the dollar equivalent. What that means is that if you are signed up to it, we have three different categories of Explore card.

“The objective of the Explore card is for a typical Nigerian not to have that impression that look, it is elites that would come here. No, you can come here with as low as 25,000 points and experience everything that can be experienced at the resort because Explore card comes with some level of discount. It is going to be a loyalty package. From time to time, you gather your points as you keep giving commitments to the resort.

“We are not perfect, anywhere you think we are not doing well, we want to get a feedback from out clients. At the initial stage when we launched it last year, we had so much pressure on demand than even the supply that we were able to meet up vis-à-vis the demand, so we had to slow down, but now we are ready to open the market, we are ready to open it to the average Nigerian and non-Nigerians, for them to come and experience what you can obviously see for yourself. You have moved around, you’ve been to the rooms, you can see how the whole resort is, how refreshing it is when you wake up in the morning, breathing the clean air that is free of pollution; it is a typical getaway.

“It is a culture that we want to try as much as possible to encourage Nigerians. Of course we don’t need to depend on oil for everything we need. It is the non-oil sector that is going to boom because, like I said earlier, some economies depend largely on tourism. So, we want to focus on it and start on a gradual basis, and we will even implore other organisations to work towards how we can make a lot of other varieties of tourism packages that can actually encourage a lot of Nigerians to travel.

“A typical Nigerian likes to travel. The resort is an experience of actually travelling outside away from what you are used to on land. Just travel on top of water, travel for 15 minutes and come and experience nature. So, what we are doing now is that the holiday season is coming again and everybody knows what the foreign exchange is saying. It has really gone up.

“So, we want to encourage local developers in terms of tourism, so that a typical Nigerian could say, ‘okay, I want to come and rest; I want to have a getaway. Price of traveling abroad is too expensive, because a lot of Nigerians are used to when summer comes, when children are not in school, to actually take them out of the country. This is an environment that we want Nigerians to come and feel and experience nature. A lot of people that have been here don’t believe that we have such a place.

“So, for even children, we have a lot of different packages for children, teenagers and youths. It is more of a family-oriented environment, and even for young couples, for them to have a getaway. Like I mentioned, we are even strong with our corporate clients, we want to actually reach out with our tentacles the more.

“So, Explore card is a form of loyalty programme that, from time to time, you can be boost. And it is of three different categories. As you are boosting it, you will be gathering points, points that you can use to do a lot of things at the resort. You will get points for your accommodation and luxury chalets, for business meetings, parties, children fun games, and boat cruise for people to explore what Nigeria and Lagos has to offer.

“In horse riding, we have a lot of horses that we are bringing so that people can go on horse riding, jungle experiencing and quad biking because we have a large expanse of land. We have a floating restaurant right in the middle of the lagoon so that people can actually experience a very romantic dinner and go on the floating lounge to have and experience how to express love and affection towards your partner.”

The Ooni’s vision to provide Nigerians with a getaway resort extends beyond Lagos with plans to replicate the Inagbe experience all over the country. He said: “So, what we are here for is to let everybody know that this actually exists; this is up and running, and we are trying to work towards our objective as a company which is to set up this all over the country, so that we can do a lot of reciprocity programme.

“If you don’t want to come to Lagos, you want to go to the North for an experience of nature there, you can actually go. If it is the east this time round, you don’t want to go to South West. So, our strategy over the next five years is to replicate this resort all over the country and pick each state’s comparative advantage.”

Kanu, who is also acclaimed to be the Director of Biafra Television and the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was said to have been arrested in Lagos, yesterday.
The Deputy Director of Radio Biafra, Uche Mefor, alongside other members of the group, in a marathon broadcast on the pirate radio, alleged that Kanu was arrested in Lagos by the security operatives, as he flew into Nigeria from his base in the UK.
The group in a tweet on Sunday, via its Twitter handle, confirmed the arrest.

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has suspended work in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

This followed a meeting with land owners and farmers at Jibowu Hall of the Government House yesterday.

An oil palm plantation farmer, Tijani Hakeem, was said to have died of shock after the destruction of economic trees on his plantation by government bulldozers.

It was gathered yesterday that Tijani’s remains were conveyed to his village in Kogi State for burial.



With the tension surronding the project concerning payment of compensation, the governor summoned a meeting.

At the meeting, which was also attended by officials of the Ministry of Works and Transportation, Fayose appealled to land owners and farmers and promised to compensate them.

The governor said his administration had resolved to suspend work until December to allow for the payment of compensation.

He noted that the suspension would also allow plantation owners and farmers to harvest their crops.

Fayose said: “Ekiti is my own priority and the innocent will not suffer under me.

“There is no desperation because of the airport. I will not say you should suffer. In the meeting we chose enumerators to go to your land.

“The law gives me power to acquire land in the overall in the overall interest of the state. I love you more than you imagine, this project is your project and I have set aside compensation for you.

“I feel your pains but the government has to move ahead. This project will stay down till December to allow enumerators to do their work and for you to harvest your crops.”

Speaking with reporters before the meeting, one of the plantation owners, Julius Fabiyi, described Hakeem’s death as unfortunate, noting that the deceased could not bear the shock of the loss of his farm.

He said Hakeem was survived by a wife and six children, saying the community of Aso Ayegunle and its environs had been mourning.

Fabiyi said he had developed hypertension since the airport project started.

A cocoa farmer, Julius Oso, said they were shocked that bulldozers could be mobilised to the site without notice and compensation

Oso said the leader of the Iwajo Family, Chief Italohun Fadahunsi, was also suffering from hypertension.

He said further: “We were not given any notice, they started bulldozing the land and this was very shocking.

“We are talking about cocoa plantation that extended to Afao, Igbogun, Igemo, Iwajo and Ijan.

“I don’t know the value the airport will bring to us; this project will displace a lot of people and deny them access to their means of livelihood.

“These cocoa plantations are our means of livelihood and we should not be thrown out of jobs.

“This land belongs to the Iwajo Family and we have been on this land since time immemorial.”

Commissioner for Works and Transportation Kayode Oso said the government would follow due process and ensure payment of compensation to land owners.

Robbers, Tuesday morning stormed FESTAC Town, in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, in military fatigue and raided three banks on 4th avenue in the area.
Vanguard gathered that the heavily armed robbers who came via the canal in speed boats blew up the security doors of Diamond, Finbank and Access banks and carted away unspecified amount of money.
It was learned that the robbers announced their presence with sporadic shootings which sent everyone in the vicinity scampering to safety. Several persons were reported injured in the process.

However, eyewitnesses said that the men of the underworld shot indiscriminately while they were been chased by the Police and youth in the area as they made good their escape.
