A British man could become the first person in the world to be cured of HIV using a new therapy designed by a team of scientists from five UK universities. The 44-year-old is one of 50 people currently trialling a treatment which targets the disease even in its dormant state. Scientists told The Sunday Times that presently the virus is completely undetectable in the man’s blood, although that could be a result of regular drugs. However if the dormant cells are also cleared out it could represent the first complete cure. "This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV,” said Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure. “We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it's still early days but the progress has been remarkable." The trial is being undertaken by researchers from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London and King's College London. HIV is so difficult to treat because it targets the immune system, splicing itself into the DNA of T-cells so that they not only ignore the disease, but turn into viral factories which reproduce the virus. Current treatments, called anti-retroviral therapies (Art), target that process but they cannot spot dormant infected T-cells. The new therapy works in two stages. Firstly, a vaccine helps the body recognise the HIV-infected cells so it can clear them out. Secondly, a new drug called Vorinostat activates the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system. More than 100,000 people in Britain are living with HIV, around 1 7 per cent of whom do not know they have the disease , and 37 million are infected worldwide. The first unidentified patient, a social care worker in London, said: "It would be great if a cure has happened. My last blood test was a couple of weeks ago and there is no detectable virus. "I took part in the trial to help others as well as myself. It would be a massive achievement if, after all these years, something is found to cure people of this disease. The fact that I was a part of that would be incredible." Professor Sarah Fidler, a consultant physician at Imperial College London, added: "This therapy is specifically designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses, including dormant ones. "It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too, but we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy. "We will continue with medical tests for the next five years and at the moment we are not recommending stopping Art but in the future depending on the test results we may explore this." Only one person has ever been cured of HIV. He is Timothy Brown, also known as The ‘second’ Berlin Patient, who received a stem cell transplant from a patient with natural immunity to HIV in 2008. Ian Green, chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the Aids charity, said: "There is still no cure for HIV and we welcome this ambitious study which looks to eradicate the virus completely from the bodies of people living with HIV, instead of suppressing it." Philip Christopher Baldwin, an HIV awareness activist. "I'm really excited by the recent developments regarding a potential cure for the HIV virus. "The first person to complete an experimental course of treatment has cleared the virus. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2010, when I was 24 years old. It took me a number of years to come to terms with my HIV. "I am proud that five British universities have been responsible for this pioneering research. It remains to be seen whether the virus will return in the "cured" patient, or if the other people taking part in the medical trial will respond in a similar way. "The research, though, is great progress and I hope that these early results will be repeated throughout the trial group. This is an important step towards a world free of the fear of HIV." So I thought I might say this. I started on upwork some few weeks ago, got my first job worth 25 dollars to review an audio book. I was excited like madt when I received my naira equivalent after transacting with an amazing lady on NL. Two weeks later which is right now, I have in queue, jobs worth 500 dollars and I am anticipating more. Dunno if it's luck (it's definitely not hard work cos I haven't tried hard enough) but I know that you are sure to make money on upwork especially if you are creative when applying for these jobs. I know if I really settle down and get organised, I might be earning more than a thousand dollars monthly. Bottom line is that there is much money to be made online. Stop procrastinating or waiting for the perfect time and jump right at it. Cheers! |
LadyF needs to be back soon o |

The idea of owning a blog or establishing a freelance writing service would definitely excite anyone with a thing for writing and/or blogs. Executing this idea is where the honeymoon ends. Easier said than done right? But engaging in this thrilling and lucrative venture does not have to be a nightmare if the newbie knows what to do and how. In this article I will be bulleting 16 things that would make any newbie break through the shackles that holds their work from floating. 1. Get a professional looking blog/website It doesn’t take much to do this! Thousands of writing based websites is being created daily so there’s your competition. Prospective readers would skim through any site they land on for at least five seconds and if your site is worth their two cents, they stay a while longer. Now am not suggesting anything too fancy but a decent site should be characterized by a theme that says you mean business and well defined pages to match. If you can afford it, have a pro fix you a wordpress.org site but if not, use and study similar sites that have a lot of traction before designing yours. First impression is key. 2. Take your time Believe me you are gonna want to take this one very seriously. Designing your blog site is one thing, posting articles is another thing but penning and publishing an article that would make readers bookmark your page at first view is something else entirely. For every person that reads your hurriedly written mediocre article, you lose one out of the potential 3 billion plus audience; probably forever. It’s a normal thing to want to get your piece out there but it is better not to have any at all than to stain your brand in anyway. Every poor piece you create equates to a bad credit. From your choice of theme, to your article title and then content should be carefully picked. 3. Network hard. Getting your work out there may not be as easy as tossing a ball but you can make it happen even without spending a dime. These days sharing of links on ones facebook wall do not guarantee views, you have to do better. Make use of facebook groups in addition to sharing on your wall. There are writers that share your vision; make them your friends, exchange creative ideas, set up a blog carnival (where you and your new friends exchange works and promote yourselves). Make the best of forums out there. Get yourself noticed. 4. Do not be overwhelmed by your target I am all for getting results and so I know how it feels when you fall behind your target but beating oneself is good therapy either. Even the worlds richest do fall short of their targets otherwise they would be trillions of dollars rich by now. Targets are meant to be a pointer that we move towards and knowing that you gave it what you could should mean something. Rather than beating yourself down about how you aren’t as good as the other, you should make the best of a not too good situation. Figure out where you went wrong but do not fail to note out methods that worked out for you and retain them or improve on them if there’s room for that. 5. Start with your A-game If you are gonna write, write well! There are millions of writers out there so why do we have to read what you have to say? It’s not what you say but how you say it. In most cases, the true best do not get the job. The guy who brought his best act first does. So when you make an article make sure it’s something you really want to talk about and something you would want to read. Write, edit, rewrite, polish, borrow extra eyes, and demo your work if possible. Make sure it’s something that makes you smile to yourself any time you read it, before you post it on your blog or send it out to a client. 6. Tell some white lies if you may While this may sound bad, it really isn’t. Most readers want to think that they are getting their information for good authority even when it is a crappy write. I’m not asking you to tell them that you that you are a qualified psychiatrist just so they can read your article on depression but command your sentences in such a way that they would think you are. After all if you work is good and it helps, you might as well be one. Say that you have been through the experiences you write about. People want to know that someone out there have walked through that lane and have seen the end of it. Be that someone. 7. Do not over research It really sucks to. Over researching a topic before you write on it could really screw you over by messing with the ideas on your head. Sometimes you go too deep that you lose the original concept. Let your audience feel you and not Wikipedia. Go through some materials to give you wider scope on your topic be do not go beyond the scope. 8. Be creative with social media Thanks to the likes of Mark and co, reaching out to a good number of people now cost next to nothing. Social media can champion your audience but you’ve got to be really creative with it. The obvious ways do not stand you out. Everyone can do it so they don’t see anything special in you. Take two hours of the day and pretend to have a publicist, only that the publicist is you but no one has to know. For these two hours, map out social media strategies and timelines. Avoid spamming as tempting as it might be, it makes you look unserious Build communities around hashtags; it does magic. Test out ideas; ask readers what they want to read. Use twitter. Partner up with other brands ‘publicists’ Ask for social shares. Monitor your progress and work on the lags. Come up with your own ideas. 9. Write long posts The thing about long post is that it makes the work really seem valuable prompting users to bookmark your page. Starting out, you would need such treatment. Readers and client should perceive you to be very knowledgeable on what you write. I suggest nothing less than a 1000 worded article for a newbie. 10. Engage your readers Interactive works compels more readers. They would want to get more from you, know your answers to questions which you imposed in their minds. Dare to be controversial but do not be disgusting. Readers and clients love boldness plastered on a work. True not everyone would agree with you when you bring in a little controversy, not everyone would agree with you when you don’t. plus controversy trends. Excite you readers with points they didn’t know before on a really known topic. How? Research and discover things you didn’t know either. It’s most likely that a lot of people wouldn’t know. 11. Avoid multi-tasking Better to be a master of one than a jack of all trades. Jettison all other ideas and topics when you are working on one. Squeeze out every ounce of juice you have on that one and be sure to be done and dusted before you exclaim on to the next ! 12. Read and write a lot Devote certain hours of each day to studying and writing. It may not be pleasant at first especially if you haven’t been used to it but it comes with the job. It is non-negotiable in this industry and you get result for it. It increases productivity and flexibility. 13. Use short paragraphs Crowded words threaten most readers. It makes the work look long and boring so you must avoid it. Limit a paragraph to 2 or 3 lines and double space between paragraphs. 14. Be frighten descriptive Don’t just drop a heading and expect the reader to figure it out no matter how self defining it make seem. Readers trust you to paint your points to them and produce an artistic picture in their mind. Emphasis on describing points especially those that could be open to different interpretations. 15. Use enticing images and catchy titles Believe me, most books are judged by their cover. Capitalize on this fact. When you search for a topic and Google comes out with various results, you go for the ones with certainty about the heading, yes? Use heading that sound sure and commanding. Rather than using should, use must. Images bring style and a certain professional look. Use them a lot. Design images for quotations if possible. 16. Persevere after doing then needful; your break would certainly come! www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/151-things-new-bloggersfreelance-writers-must-know_us_57bedd71e4b0b01630ddcca2 |
South Africa has regained the title of Africa's largest economy, two years after Nigeria rebased its economy to claim the spot, according to IMF data. A recalculation using current exchange rates put South Africa on top because the rand has strengthened against the dollar. Nigeria's currency has fallen sharply since a peg to the dollar was dropped. But BBC Africa Business Report editor Matthew Davies says both economies could be on the brink of recession. Africa Live: More on this and other stories Nigeria rebased its economy in 2014 to include previously uncounted industries like telecoms, information technology, music, online sales, airlines, and film production. Most countries do rebasing, updating the measure of the size of the economy, at least every three years or so, but Nigeria had not updated the components in its GDP base year since 1990. Analysis by Matthew Davies, BBC News On the basis of these numbers, there's not a lot between the two. South Africa's economy is worth around $301bn (£232bn) and Nigeria comes in at $296bn. The exercise in calculating the numbers using last year's IMF figures and this year's currency exchange numbers, technically puts South Africa back on top. But look behind the league table and the light-hearted jostling about who has the largest economy in Africa and things, economically speaking, are a little bleaker. Both economies contracted in the first quarter. Another contraction and they'll both be in recession. Nigeria is almost entirely dependent on its oil exports. And as the price of oil slumps so does the flow of petrodollars coming into the country's coffers. South Africa's economy is more diverse. Indeed, after Nigeria knocked it off the top spot two years ago, we started describing it as "Africa's most industrialised economy", rather than Africa second-largest economy. But economic growth is unlikely to make it above 1% in South Africa this year and many, including the country's Reserve Bank, are forecasting it at zero. Unemployment remains stubbornly high and a credit rating review is looming at the end of the year. If the whole "largest economy in Africa" competition was a horse race, the two leading contenders would be virtually neck and neck. But they wouldn't be galloping, they'd be trotting at best. And looking increasingly tired and in need of sustenance. www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-37045276 |
LORDOFAFONJAS:dasuki is in jail, duh |
A former Commissioner of Transport in the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Orobosa Omo- Ojo, has opened a can of worms on the administration of the comrade governor in a book, “Breach of Trust, An eyewitness account of political events in Edo state before and under Adams Oshiomhole’s watch”. Omo-Ojo who has since fallen apart with his erstwhile boss, explained his sack as Commissioner in January this year, saying that his removal was because he refused to divulge details of his meetings with some perceived enemies of Governor Oshiomhole. He alleged in the book that the state government spent N14 billion to design website for the Edo Open Portal project and urged the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate the project. According to Omo-Ojo, it would be a cruel fate to Edo people if the EFCC failed to investigate the Open Portal project and others in the ICT including biometrics, oracle, internet provision for Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs). He alleged that the open portal was a deception, designed as a cover-up for the growing criticism of lack of transparency in government operation and a means to justify the $225 million World Bank loan which was equivalent to N50 billion. Besides, the former Commissioner alleged that Oshiomhole spent N500 million to pursue vice presidential ambition and granted Certificate of Occupancy waiver to Alhaji Aliko Dangote worth N1.08 billion for the establishment of a fertilizer plant, just as he described Oshiomhole’s administration as “mob government where every one contributes to the affairs of the state without a clear direction of government policy. “Working with Oshiomhole is like watching a circus show. There is never a boring moment. Either he amuses you with sheer energy to talk unending or you are amazed at his self-delusion as he speaks on every subject like an authority. The only way to reduce priceless time wasting during meetings is to allow a monologue. This practice led to poor project execution”, he alleged. Reacting to the allegations yesterday, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Peter Okhiria, said “we have a copy of the book, we will react to the allegations appropriately.” www.sunnewsonline.com/edo-ex-commissioner-opens-can-of-worn-on-oshiomholes-administration/ |
