Politics › Young Leaders Embark On Voters' Sensitization Campaign In Abuja. by DigitalSec(op): 4:25am On Feb 20, 2023
By: Adebisi Matthew Adewale

In preparation for the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, the Young African Leaders Initiative - YALI Network Abuja embarked on massive voters' Sensitization Campaign in Abuja on Saturday 18th February, 2023; under the auspices of the YALINaijaVotes Campaign Program of the network.

The Naija Votes Campaign is an initiative that was launched during the 2019 General Elections by the Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Association of Nigeria (MWFAAN) which is an arm of the Young African Leaders Initiative - YALI, under the auspices of the US Department of State. The sensitization campaign, which was facilitated by MWFAAN through the Embassy of the United States in Nigeria, took place across the 36 States in the country where YALI Hubs and YALI Regional Leadership Centres (RLCs) are domiciled, ahead of the 2023 General Elections.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of patriotism, YALI Abuja members flooded the streets of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in large numbers with sensitization materials - including placards, banners, pre-recorded voiceovers, amongst other informative materials and gadgets, conveying the need for the electorates to exercise their democratic rights at the forthcoming 2023 General Elections without yielding to enticement of vote selling, violence, false information dissemination, amongst other electoral malpractices.

It is also worthy of mention that the 2023 Naija Votes Campaign was officially launched on the 9th day of January, with several online engagements, routine info-graphical release(s), twitter space conversations, in-house face2face dialogue with professionals within the electoral clime, media interviews and sensitization walk, geared towards ensuring voters' inclusion and active participation in the general elections for a smooth and democratic leadership transition in Nigeria.

During the election campaign, YALI Abuja members who were branded as Voters Sensitization Officers (VSO) had a one-one-one interaction with members of the public domain - especially market sellers, street-hawkers, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and a host of the citizens - the electorates; providing real-time answers to questions on modalities of acceptable polling exercise using the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amongst other interventions.

Considering the high response level of the electorates captured during the sensitization campaign survey analysis, it was deduced that a sizable number of the electorates have secured their Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) and are prepared to cast their votes to preferred candidates across various elective positions, without yielding to intimidation or enticement to indulge in electoral malpractices. However, a number of the respondents expressed fear over the current security challenges ravaging some parts of the country amidst the new naira scarcity glitches. According to these demographics, these may pose a challenge to smooth voting exercise if not swiftly addressed.

Meanwhile, the sensitization campaign addressed these fears, with qualitative explanation by YALI Officials that INEC has re-inforced several strategic structures and measures towards curtailing these potential challenges for a seamless electoral process throughout the electioneering period; as such, it is needless to fear. Also, as part of efforts to follow through the electoral process for a successful outcome, YALI members across the states - including FCT, have been strategically stationed as Elections Fact Checkers (Data Clerks), Situation Room Analysts, Observers, amongst other strategic roles, through the existing mutual partnership with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) focused on Elections and Democratic Governance in Nigeria and Africa.

The Young African Leaders Initiative - YALI Network Abuja, alongside other hubs in Nigeria is committed towards contributing immensely to the success of the 2023 General Elections, while building-up the next generation of young leaders with the right democratic leadership orientation and skill-set to change the worrisome economic narrative of Nigeria in no distant time.
