According to investigators, the gang specialized in kidnapping young children, murdering them, and removing vital body parts. These parts were then sold to businessmen and political figures who believed they would bring them wealth, power, and good fortune.

The bust happened in 2008 when a missing child’s body was discovered in a shallow grave near an old shrine. Police followed leads that led them straight to the gang’s hideout, where disturbing evidence — including blood-stained ritual tools and charms — was found.

Several members of the group confessed to supplying human body parts to influential people in exchange for large sums of money. This revelation caused widespread outrage, with angry residents demanding the public execution of all those involved.

Human rights groups described the incident as one of the most gruesome ritual murder cases in Burkina Faso’s history. Authorities later promised to crack down on traditional ritual killings, but locals fear such practices still happen in secret across parts of West Africa.

In the pre-colonial Yoruba kingdom of Owu (present-day Ogun State), royal funerals were not just ceremonies — they were gateways to the afterlife, and the king was never meant to make that journey alone.

When an Olowu (king of Owu) died, tradition demanded that certain members of his household and trusted warriors follow him into the spirit world. This meant actual live human sacrifice during the burial.

The Burial Ritual

1. Selection of the Sacrificial Companions:

Usually personal attendants, palace guards, and in rare cases, close family members.

They were chosen for their loyalty in life, so they could continue serving in death.

2. The Final Feast:

Before burial, a grand feast was held. Those chosen to “travel with the king” would be honored with rich food and drink — a deceptive kindness before their fate.

3. The Sealed Tomb:

The king’s body was placed in a special underground chamber with his ornaments, weapons, and treasures.

The selected companions were led inside alive, the entrance was sealed, and they suffocated or starved — believed to awaken together in the next world.

4. Spiritual Justification:
The Yoruba belief was that a king’s reign continued in the spiritual realm, so he needed the same comfort, protection, and service he had in life. The sacrifice was seen as an honor, not a punishment.

The End of the Practice

By the 19th century, with the spread of Christianity, Islam, and British colonial influence, the ritual killing at royal burials was outlawed. However, oral history in Owu still tells of one of the last Olowu burials where more than 20 people were sealed alive to “accompany” the king.

Inikpi was the beloved daughter of Attah Ayegba Om’Idoko, the ruler of the Igala Kingdom in present-day Kogi State, Nigeria. She is remembered as a heroine whose selfless sacrifice saved her people from destruction. Her story is one of courage, loyalty, and love for her kingdom.

Many centuries ago, the Igala Kingdom faced a deadly war against the powerful Benin Kingdom. The Igala army was struggling, and famine spread across the land. The Attah (king) sought guidance from the gods through an oracle.

The oracle delivered a painful prophecy:

The Igala Kingdom would only survive if the king sacrificed his most beloved child.

Attah Ayegba was devastated. He loved Inikpi deeply and could not imagine losing her. But when she i learned of the prophecy, she made a decision that would change history forever.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly accused the EFCC of witch-hunt, claiming Nigeria’s anti-graft agency has turned its mandate into a political weapon for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

ADC Accuses EFCC of Witch-Hunt. In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, criticised what he described as “calculated media trials” targeting opposition politicians, while APC figures with well-documented corruption cases remain untouched.

According to the ADC, recent actions by the EFCC, including the detention of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, the “urgent” investigation into the seven-month tenure of former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, and a probe into the Senate presidency of ADC’s national chairman, David Mark, are politically motivated moves aimed at discrediting rivals ahead of the 2027 elections.


A fight against corruption that begins and ends with the opposition is not justice, it is persecution,” Abdullahi stated. “These are carefully staged scandals designed to destroy reputations and sway public opinion without delivering real justice.

The ADC accuses EFCC of witch-hunt by questioning the timing of the investigations. The party noted that Tambuwal, Ihedioha, and Mark all left office years ago, yet APC leaders accused of recent corruption continue to enjoy immunity from scrutiny.

“Why now? Why these men? Why these timelines? If corruption truly has no statute of limitation, why are the EFCC’s files on APC’s own ‘big men’, many with fresher cases, gathering dust?” Abdullahi asked.
