This made her an online sensation. Peace Ufuoma who is from Delta State graduated from the Microbiology Department, Faculty of Life Sciences. She has been summoned to appear before a disciplinary panel over the video, and if found wanting, she is likely to be dismissed or have her certificate withheld. The Department of Microbiology, University of Benin has constituted a committee to probe the results of a female student, who marked her graduation in a controversial shirt. After about six months of stemming and preventing the spread of Covid-19, which of course led to the closure of all schools and borders, Federal government Friday ordered the reopening of all schools in the country. The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja. The Federal Government says the issue of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would soon be resolved. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Today, the 19th of August, 2020 Nigerian students under the umbrella bodies of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), national Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of University Students (NAUS) and National Association of Nigerian College of Education Students (NANCES) have all gathered at the Unity Fountain, FCT Abuja to protest the continued closure of schools amidst covid19. The National President of NAPS, comrade Adekanbi Sunday who spoke to news men at the ongoing peaceful protest by concerned students said that students had stayed home for more than necessary. A student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has spent nearly two months in police custody for allegedly setting up a Twitter parody account of former President Goodluck Jonathan, according to the Punch. According to a twitter user, the said influencer has spend more than two months in police custody. Speaking with The PUNCH on Friday, a human rights lawyer, Tope Akinyode, said the student was arrested after a complaint by the former President to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. Policemen were said to have obtained information of Olusola’s call log record from a telecommunications service provider. The call history linked him to his uncle, a pastor in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who was immediately placed under house arrest by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives and was ordered to invite Olusola to his residence for onward arrest, which was done. Akinyode said Olusola was subsequently taken to Abuja. He said, “I was informed that it was one of the aides to former President Jonathan that saw the parody account on Twitter and informed his boss. Jonathan immediately reported to the IG and that was how investigations began. Following what they described as Federal Government’s poor handling of schools reopening, students of tertiary institutions have given the government two weeks within which to fix a date for resumption. They threatened to protest against continued closure of schools if government failed to accede to their demands within 14 days. The groups, comprising the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of University Students (NAUS) and National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), at a virtual meeting, decried Federal Government’s approach towards resumption of learning institutions in the country. The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) says there is no going back on its on going strike as 80% of the chapter voted for continuation. Image result for ASUU Prof . Biodun Ogunyemi , the union ’s National President , told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) on telephone in Abuja that the strike would be total and indefinite. The union leadership , after its executive committee meeting , declared the strike continues till the FG yield to it request . Ogunyemi said chronic under-funding of the sector through low budgetary allocation, which went from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016, did not go down well with the union . He pointed out the failure of government to implement the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) as some of the reasons for embarking on the warning strike. The president said that its members were tired of what they described as “government ’s empty promises ’’ in setting up its negotiation team for the review of agreement as consistently requested by ASUU since 2012 . PREMIUM TIMES also specifically gathered that the meeting will discuss whether or not to accept the federal government’s offer. A top member of ASUU, who requested anonymity, confirmed this development to PREMIUM TIMES adding that all the branches are expected to submit their respective reports to the national body who will take a final decision.
