Following the recent attack on a Shia Muslim group in Zaria by the Nigerian Army over the weekend, killing numerous people after a military convoy got stuck by a march, the Iran military has vow to "visit" Nigeria very soon.

The trouble began on Saturday, when thousands of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a pro- Iranian Shia group, held a march in Zaria, in Kaduna State, to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, and his convoy wound up trapped in the gridlock. According to some accounts, a metal object was thrown at the general's vehicle by someone in the crowd. Soldiers mistook the sound for gunshots and apparently thought it was part of an attempt to assassinate the general.

At any rate, soldiers in the convoy opened fire, killing a number of people. Members of the sect put the number at more than 100.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital has dismissed the suit filed before it by Governor Idris Wada of Kogi state as well as that of James Faleke, the running mate of late Abubakar Audu today.

The court also ruled that supplementary elections slated for December 5 in 91 polling units will go ahead as planned.

Kolawole struck out all the suits saying that his court has no jurisdiction to entertain the issues brought as they are post election matters.

He therefore ruled that the issues in the different suits should be taken to the Election Petition Tribunal for determination when it is constituted.

The Judge also ruled that the issue of the legality or otherwise of the supplementary poll can also be determined by the Tribunal. He therefore ruled that the supplementary election should go ahead as planned by INEC.

Wada who was second to late Audu in the polls argued that since Audu is dead, he should be declared winner and given a certificate of return.

Similarly, Faleke approached the court arguing that since he was running mate to late Audu, he deserves to run as the candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress.

Yahaya Bello who finished behind Audu in the primaries was picked by the party as his replacement for the supplementary polls.

Following his elevation as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has replaced the immediate past petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, as the Conference President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC.

In November 2014, Alison-Madueke was named the first female president of OPEC when she was elected at the 166th ordinary meeting of the organisation. There have been speculations that President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources would take over the OPEC top job, but the body in a recent update on its website named Kachikwu as the head of the OPE conference.

While disclosing his plans for OPEC, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, promised to do his best to delay Iran’s intended oversupply of crude oil, to control pricing.

Speaking with reporters in Lagos, he said: “I think the key thing will be obviously crude oil price. There is a lot of sensitivity on that, $42 currently and with potential to go down if Iran throws their barrels into the field.

“My first target as I meet with ministers one- on-one is to try to delay Iran’s flooding of the market to the last quarter of next year. I will be talking with Iran’s oil minister on that so that we can stabilise the price. “Maybe, hopefully, by the first or second quarter of next year, we will begin to see how that statement can now embolden us to go and begin to address removing the 1.5mbpd production that is lying in the market internationally.”
