The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecom operators have expressed optimism over the commencement of the Sim card registration from May 1.

In a telephone interview with NEXT, Reuben Muoka the spokesperson for the commission said, “Any new sim card bought subsequently from May 1, 2010 must be registered for life.”

The commission announced in December that the sim card registration is part of efforts to curb crime in the country, but the exercise will, however, begin with new sim cards purchased by new subscribers.

Mr. Muoka explained that the registration will be done online, adding that “operators are expected to put all machinery in motion for the commencement of the process. We suspect that they will sell what is called partially activated lines, whereby, you may get a line but can only receive calls or Short Message Service (SMS) but not able to make calls or send texts. So, you must now go to a particular place where you will have your sim registered before you can begin to enjoy these services,” said Mr. Muoka.

The last is yet to be heard about the alleged distribution of expired milk by the Ekiti State Government to its public schools’ pupils, FEMI MAKINDE writes.

The school feeding programme initiated by the administration of Governor Segun Oni of Ekiti State to further boost enrolment in the state has come under heavy criticism from the main opposition party in the state

The gesture of providing a meal of cocoa drink and an egg a day to each of the pupils in public primary and junior secondary schools in the state is now under intense criticisms by the Action Congress as the party accused the Oni administration of deliberately feeding thousands of pupils from poor families with expired milk.

The state government had given more than enough sachets of MILCOW pineapple milk to thousands of its pupils. The unusual gift, which was distributed in large quantity in March, caught the attention of many curious parents who were suspicious of the gesture. The parents eventually discovered that the milk, which was packaged by a Lagos-based company, had expired before they were distributed to the children on order of the state government.
