I expected better from El-Bubba but this his comment is brainless. There is a constitutionally set time in which Tinubu cannot stay in office beyond and that is 12 noon May 29th 2027. If he has to remain in office beyond that date then it must be because he is being sworn in for a second term. Elections must be held as a matter of necessity. The constitution recognises nothing else. |
givedemwotowoto:You need to consider that if he hadn't removed the subsidy in its entirety when he did, he would not have been able to subsequently and turn of events like the current US invasion of Iran would have even pushed those subsidy costs up more. I strongly believe that the pain of subsidy removal is far preferable than the outright economic collapse that continued subsidy payments would have caused. At least with removal of subsidy, the country gets to see another day. There is no way the energy consumption of a nation of 260 million people will be sustainable. |
I'm sure a lot of heads are doing a double take at the captioning of my post. I believe though that we can freely support whoever we want while being objective in our analysis. Yes, I support Obi and proudly so. At the same time, that hasn't blinded me from seeing and acknowledging positive steps the Tinubu government has undertaken. Let me get to the point. The truth is a burden and can be uncomfortable to read or hear. But that inconvenience doesn't stop it being the truth. Was Tinubu right about subsidy removal? Could he have gone about it in a different, less hurtful way? I'll answer that shortly. Nigeria would have collapsed if Tinubu hadn't stopped subsidy payments when he did. Every president before him, had toyed with the idea or even attempted some measure of subsidy removal. Subsidy payments was the elephant in the room of every economic policy meeting the NEC was having. But it was the holy grail few dared actually face head-on. At a point, Nigeria's subsidy payments were exceeding its earnings. Nigeria was borrowing not for development but to offset subsidy claims. Claims that for the most part, were unverifiable. The country was shouldering fuel costs of a good number of neighbouring African countries. There was no way that was sustainable short or long term. The argument can be made that Nigeria's present economic crisis can actually be tied to years of subsidy payments. The country was living on debt and borrowing from the future. That future is today and the cheque has come due. Nigeria borrowed so much for subsidy payments that these debt obligations and servicing costs still take huge chunks of our earnings. It doesn't help also, that future crude production was the collateral used to secure these loans. We must also take notice that a healthy portion of Nigeria's debt profile is debt incurred by the various states but that's a topic for another day. If Tinubu hadn't stopped subsidy payments, Nigeria would have probably experienced a similar situation Greece and Argentina faced a few years back. But we aren't entirely out of the woods yet I must say. Some have argued that Tinubu was wrong for channeling the freed funds accruing from subsidy payments to state governments. On the face of it, that appears to be a legit argument but here's a key overlooked detail. Every money that hits the federation account must be disbursed according to the distribution formula set by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Committee (RMFAC). There is an enabling law backing this and the president would be remiss act otherwise. In simple terms, no. Tinubu on his own cannot decide how the money canceling subsidy payments has brought, gets shared. That said, he does his government no good by not putting pressure on the senate to investigate the NNPC and get to the root of how 210 trillion naira cannot be accounted for. Money doesn't just fly. Accountants know that every money has a trace and a trail. In who's interest is the Nigerian senate refusing to investigate this matter. The country cannot be embarking on a borrowing galore when its chief earner, the NNPC, cannot account for over 30 billion dollars. I welcome nuanced, well reasoned and fact based arguements. Thank you for reading. |
OP, I am by no means a Tinubu supporter but I am very objective in my analysis. Tinubu did the right thing to remove subsidies on petrol. He however lacks the power to decide how to use those freed funds. The constitution doesn't give him that power. By the law that set up the RMFAC, every naira that hits the federation account must be shared according to set down percentages. Tinubu is powerless to stop that. |
playapayaski:He likely paid for this post to make front page. |
Trump is about to throw Israel under the bus. Iran just indicated that it might not sign the agreement with the US today. They know Trump has backed himself into a corner. Oil executives are beginning to warn Trump that the reserves a good number of countries have relied on to stabilise prices of crude, are dangerously low. The war needs to end now or the consequences for the price of global crude will be dire. Trump is sweating already and that's why he called Netannyahu today to yell at him. Iran knows all this and it is what they planned for. That's why they are in no rush to sign anything. They want to exact maximum gains from the US as possible. We are already hearing about 24 Billion dollars being released to Iran (their own money though) but this figure may get as high as 300 billion dollars because that's how much of Iranian money that western banks have seized. Donald Trump has in effect, lost this war. |
At this point Shettima doesn't know and Tinubu doesn't know either. One thing is certain though, if he drops Shettima, he'll be setting this country on fire worse than it is at the moment. |
See incompetence of the highest order? Firstly, of what use is the police dogs that the NPF has? Abi dem never chop? Secondly, as soon as news broke of this kidnap, why did the Nigerian airforce not put up a drone or an aircraft with thermal imaging systems to comb the immediate vicinity of the incident? Calculating the distance it would take a group of humans to travel on foot in a given time. None of that was done. We are a country ruled by the dumbest of us with even more dumb people in positions of authority in the military. Imagine close to a month later, that's when the Nigerian army is lazily looking for their grand father in the roadside that leads to nowhere. This is super embarrassing. |
Let's break this down. The aircraft is a military transport plane. It landed successfully but somehow veered off the runway and became engulfed in fire. Still survivors should have come out of that but then the possibility exists that whatever cargo that plane was carrying, came crashing down on everyone in the plane when it nosedived. They got crushed to death instead of burning to death. It is also remarkable to see that no fire fighters came to the scene right away. I guess incompetence is not limited to Nigeria alone. |
The traditional deity is not deitying again? I thought they said they were invoking their gods against Fulani? |
Number 15 on that list was my class mate in secondary school. 😥 |
They need to begin to start touring and campaigning. Let the public see more of them while Tinubu stays hidden in Aso Rock with saliva dripping all over his body. |
I wonder how much such a vintage car will be worth now. |
Why doesn't the IMF makes suggestions like this to the US, UK, Germany, France and Canada? They recommend subsidies for these countries but keep advising African countries to impose the harshest of economic measures on her citizens. |
Susan Rice, a known CIA asset, is aware that the CIA uses substances of unknown make up to trigger cardiac events and traces of these substances will never show on any toxicology report. MKO Abiola had no history of heart ailments before then and neither was he undergoing treatments for same. |
These people are high on their own supply. |
It is also being reported that the US might agree to give Iran 24 billion dollars tomorrow after another cease fire agreement is signed with a possible 300 billion dollars of seized Iranian funds in the future. Talks about Iranian uranium enrichment may be held at a later date. In effect, Iran has achieved a victory beyond their wildest aims. The JCPOA that Obama negotiated with Iran and Trump tore up, is far better than this. There is no way this can be taken to be anything more than a loss and a total humiliation of the United States. |
Russian social media has been circulating images of a Ukrainian drone bomb which is square with a metal point like the ground spike for a fence post. This is a penetrating weapon, as a sticker on the bomb proclaims, and it has Russian military bloggers worried. Now nowhere is safe. FPVs and drone bombing have driven Russian forces underground into bunkers and forced them to cover roads and facilities with nets, wire cages and steel mesh. A few weeks ago Russian reports started circulating of a new drone bomb punching through such defenses. The new images suggest that this weapon is now being produced at scale, and a Ukrainian video shows it in action. Bunker Busting Basics Ukraine operates a fleet of heavy bomber multicopters of various types, notably the Vampire, but also Kazhan (“Bat”), Heavy Shot and Nemesis. The Russians call them by the generic term of Baba Yaga. Vampire can deliver a 33-pound bombload to a target ten miles away. The Ukrainians however, fondly refer to their new toy as 'Anal punisher' or penetrating weapon as the sticker on it indicates. Source: Forbes.com

If only God can end insecurity in Nigeria, then resign as deputy minister of defence! Also, the Nigerian Defence Academy should be shut down because clearly their products over the years do not have what it takes to end insecurity in Nigeria. That said, what business has someone who couldn't even pass WAEC doing as defense minister? This is an indictment on Tinubu. |
I don't think anyone has the right to sit in the comfort of his home, typing on his phone and negate the efforts of men who have spent the better part of the past 14 years facing bullets, bombs, IEDs and rockets. If you think the army isn't doing enough, why don't you sign up and show them how it is done. |
oluwaseyi0:The same Islamic terrorists Israel and the US have been funding over the years? |
Shame on Donald Trump. He bites the dust again. |
See goat talk. What will Iran say? Iran and North Korea are the most sanctioned countries on earth and yet they have very established weapons manufacturing industries. Nigeria has no excuse. I'll keep saying it, without an established steel making industry, Nigeria will never be developed and achieve self sufficiency in anything. Without a fully functional power generation industry, steel production and sufficiency will never be possible in Nigeria. No country can develop without any of the above present. DICON exists but they may as well be making just catapults for all the toys they've been producing over the years. That said, Musa is simply being intellectually lazy and disingenuous. FPV drones are the game changer in Ukraine. That's why Russia is currently suffering huge losses there and that's why the US is afraid to put boots on the ground in Iran. Even Israel is already feeling the heat from Hezbollah using FPV drones against the IDF in Lebanon. FPV drones are cheap and easily accessible. Deploy a batch of NYSC members, give them a 2 weeks training and position them tens of kilometres away from terrorist enclaves and see what they'll achieve in no time. |
Apcshit:Who did this to you? Why are you like this? |
I watched where a hundred floor sky scrapper was bending like plastic during the earthquake. Modern engineering really is a marvel. Engineers building on earthquake prone areas use specialized materials that can withstand the stress and strains of earthquakes to build such structures. |
VDM needs to thread with caution. Those soldiers are from the guards brigade Abuja. They generally don't look too fondly upon protests like this. As much as VDM has a constitutionally guaranteed right to protest, he can't prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the march to cause mischief. While I share his sentiments that Tinubu must not continue to be Nigeria's president, the only acceptable way to enforce this change remains at the ballot box. VDM should walk his talk and advocate for as many who feel the same way he does, to ensure that they have their PVC and must vote! It is a certainty that practically everyone who is marching with him as seen in this video, do not have their voters card or are even inclined to vote. That is where he should channel his energy on. |
It is finished for this country. Haba! |
It is finished for this country. Useless police say around doing nothing. Hunters engaged in self help efforts and all the police could do us arrest and detain them? They couldn't go after the kidnappers and neither did they interview any of the rescued kidnapped victims to verify the truth behind what the hunters are saying but instead, they detained them. What is wrong with the Nigerian police force? |
Electricity cost of 47 billion naira yearly? Are they operating a steel rolling mill there? How much does a whole state consume? AEDC do estimated billing reach 47 billion naira abi na person siddon just dey chop dat money? How much power does the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) even consume in an entire year? It isn't anywhere near 47 billion naira! |
