With a touching end to the Christmas break and the UEFA Champions’ League group stage, many footballers have had an impressive season so far,

Clubs like Juventus, PSG, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have been in excellent form in the league while the other team’s success has been quite shaky and inconsistent. Clubs like Arsenal, AC Milan and Chelsea are competing in the Europa League, and many more poor clubs will be set to join them after the first round of the Champion’s League.

While it was encouraging to see the rise of teams like Ajax and Inter in the Champions’ League, a lot has been investigated about the situation of below-average performances of Monaco and PSV Eindhoven.

These are five footballers who are not getting much recognition for their talent and their display on the pitch. These footballers deserve more credits for their achievement so far this season:

SERGIO BUSQUET (Barcelona)

At the start of his career at the Camp Nou, Sergio was not really a fan-favourite and the situation of his Barcelona contract was surrounded by politics in that the low-key and shadowed midfielder was the relative of one of the Barcelona legends. The decision to sign him was cloudy but after decades, the man has become the subject of debates among pundits and lovers of La Liga.

Sergio’s record in the middle of the park is impressive and envious as Barca’s tiki-taka style of play brings in someone that can hold the play from the first-quarter of the pitch.

WILFRED NDIDI (Leicester City)

The Nigerian International’s growth in the competitive atmosphere of the Premier League is overwhelming. Ndidi boasts of top-notch passes, important interceptions and ability to stop counter-attacks as Leicester City enters the post-Ranieri era and the former Chairman’s calamitous helicopter death.

Wilfred Ndidi, after few years in the League has cemented the first team and is looking irreplaceable to the team as top stars like Vardy and Maddison have connected wonderfully in the attacking unit of the former Premier League Champions team.

Few months ago, Ndidi’s stats showed him as among the top five (5) stoppers of attack and tacklers in the Premier League. This revelation will be important to Leicester and Nigeria as his home country aim to build on a disastrous outing at the last World Cup in Russia.

MARCO VERRATTI (PSG)

The presence of stars like Mbappe and Neymar in the team has made it blind for fans to see the ability of the Italian in the PSG team. What else do you expect from a team that rampages in the transfer market and swims in spending spree every now and then?

For a player like Verratti that builds attack from the back coupled by his passing ability, it is sad that his goal to match ratio will never match that of Neymar and Mbappe. Of course, that is understandable and undermining to the credits of the diminutive central and defensive midfielder whose work rate and attitude on and off the pitch is commendable.

AXEL WITSEL (Borussia Dortmund)

Voted as one of the vital signings in Bundesliga, the inclusion of the Belgian to the highly attacking style of Borussia Dortmund has created more freedom for Gotze, Pulisic and Reus to play high up the pitch with much protection at the back.

With all these qualities, Axel is the complete package and deserves praise for his role in Borrusia Dortmund team.

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA (AC Milan)

The gigantic shot stopper doesn’t gain much attention majorly for two reasons, with the foremost being Milan’s inconsistent form and frequent team shuffle. Milan’s unprofessional backline has been a concern also.

The good news is that the goalkeeper is among the rebuilding the Azzuri. The man is excellent on one-on-one situations and possesses swift reflexes. Gianluigi also has a wide aerial reach and is calm and composed under intense moments.
