Politics / Re: Oyo, Imo, Ogun, Others Lead In Armed Robbery In Nigeria. by dominics: 1:48pm On May 06, 2011
I can not find any news reports about this, but I was told there was a gang of 14 armed robbers that stopped cars and buses crossing over from mainland to the island during the morning commute.  They posed as police and set up a fake checkpoint.  5 people were killed, all were robbed, and 3 cars were stolen.

Has anyone else heard about this??  I can't find a single news item on this event that happened Wednesday morning.

Please respond if you know anything.  My friend says he was robbed and injured.

Thanks.
Investment / Is A Nigerian Stock Exchange License Necessary? by dominics: 1:10pm On Aug 26, 2009
My friend plans to come to America and sell some of his stock purchased at the NSE a few months ago.  He was told he needs a Nigerian Stock Exchange License to trade or sell in the US.  He says this is a new requirement because of the change in the Central Bank Govenor.  I am hoping someone familiar with this can verify the information given him.  He's told he need $850 for the license, and he is asking me for help with that.  I think it sounds odd.  He was charged $650 for 2 stamps of authentification - supposedly one needed for Nigeria, the other needed in the US.  So why the license too?

Also, does he need this "license" to sell or trade in Nigeria?  Can that be true?  Isn't that the roll of the broker?  Why would he need this?  Please, if you have an insight into this I would so appreciate the advice.  Clearly, I don't think he's being given good advice, but I'm not sure.

Thank you

Business / Please Help! How Can A Non-resident Cash An International Bank Draft? by dominics: 8:25pm On Oct 10, 2008
I have a friend who is from the UK.  He was issued an bank draft issued from a Nigerian bank for subcontract work he completed in Lagos.  He wants to return to the UK, but was told by customs agents that he could not leave without paying a 1% tax on the total draft amount.  This is a substantial amount which he does not have.  He was told an option was to open non resident bank account for $1000 US!   Then he could deposit the draft, wait for it to clear, then his only option would be to have the money wired to a beneficiarys account outside the country.  This, he was told would cost 1.5% of the total draft amount!  We are talking thousands of dollars.   Additionally, he was told he would not be able to access these funds himself.

Has anyone had any experience with international bank drafts and trying to cash them?  Or has anyone encountered the tax problem and how did you resolve it.

Is there a bank I could recommend to him that might work with him on this problem.  This is urgent and if anyone can assist with a solution, I'd be so grafteful!  cry
