Following recent attacks by Boko Haram insurgents on some parts of Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima on Tuesday held a meeting with members of youth volunteers involved in counter insurgency operations popularly known as 'Civilian JTF' during which he appreciated their gallant efforts and unveiled welfare packages for them.
At an open session with majority of the volunteers, Governor Shettima paid glowing tributes to them for sacrificing their lives towards complimenting the efforts of armed forces to fight for the restoration of peace in the state. He said no amount of welfare package can equal the sacrifices being made by the volunteers especially given the fact that some of them had laid their lives for Borno State.
The Governor said despite its meager resource, the Borno state Government would expend whatever it takes to ensure that the volunteers were properly paid allowances, equipped and highly motivated. He announced a bonus of twenty million naira to the volunteers while directing that any backlog of allowances be paid immediately. Shettima directed the Ministry of Health to put a system in place that would guarantee free medical attention to all youth volunteers in all public hospitals in the state. He also ordered the supply of more patrol vehicles to the volunteers.

THE Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to probe the military on its alleged involvement in reported ballot snatching and violence that rendered Bayelsa State governorship election inconclusive.
Ekiti PDP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, said a probe of the allegations against the military in the Bayelsa elections had become imperative “if the military panel set up on Ekiti and Osun states elections should not be taken as mere witch-hunt.”
The party said it had been “vindicated that the military panel on Ekiti and Osun states was set up on sentimental interest rather than a guide to democratic practice in Nigeria with the alleged participation of the same military in the election materials-snatching, thumb-printing and killing of PDP members that marred the Bayesa State governorship election.”
Adebayo said “President Buhari should prove to Nigerians his sincerity on free and fair elections by asking the military why its men aided the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.”
He said “if the military could probe the Ekiti and Osun elections where there were no records of killing, ballot snatching or mass thumb-printing of ballot papers, then that of Bayelsa State should be handled by a military tribunal to probe the wanton destruction of lives allegedly by soldiers.”


Adebayo maintained that “the president cannot stand aloof while the military under his administration have decided to join hands with his party to be rigging elections as witnessed during the inconclusive Bayelsa election while at the same time, the Nigeria Army is probing its men that provided security that prevented rigging during the 2014 Ekiti State governorship election.”

He reminded the president that Ekiti election was adjudged to be free and fair by both local and international observers.
Adebayo added that the president should not look the other way in a matter like this and his action should be urgent to prove his sincerity with Nigerians on every other matter, saying “if he doesn’t, he would be seen as giving nod to the impunity of the military in Bayelsa election.”
According to him, “the essence of the military probing the Ekiti and Osun elections will become an exercise in futility and kangaroo arrangement if the president behaves as if what happened in Bayelsa was normal.”
Ekiti PDP, however, saluted the courage of the Bayelsans who despite the killing and assistance of the military in electoral violence during the inconclusive election prevented the fraud to scale through.

1. The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been brought to the report making rounds that its operatives illegally blocked the residence of the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki (Col/Rtd), in violation of a subsisting court order granting him a relief to travel oversea for medical services. This is to say the least that such report is not only unfounded and malicious but aimed at tarnishing the good image of the Service.
2. It may be recalled that SAMBO was initially arrested and charged to court for unlawful possession of firearms and money laundering, for which reason his international passport was seized and on the order of the court, returned to the registrar for custody. What has however brought the seeming standoff between SAMBO and the Service, despite the court-ordered release of his international passport on 4th November, 2015, is his refusal to appear before a Committee undertaking the investigation of an entirely different case.
3. The public may wish to note that the government set up the Committee to investigate procurement processes relating to a two billion dollar ($2billion) arms transaction by the last administration, under which SAMBO was the NSA. It was on this premise that he was invited by the Committee to shed more light on his involvement in the deal. It, therefore, remains surprising and shocking that SAMBO has refused to honour invitations of the Committee but instead resorts to grandstanding and subtle blackmail of the Service. His refusal to appear before the Committee has left the Service with no option than to adopt legal means to ensure his attendance.
4. Therefore, without doubt, SAMBO is pulling all strings available to him to evade justice and put the Service in bad light. The simple fact is that the DSS is not persecuting him. Nigerians are therefore enjoined to disregard the impression being created by him. This Service wishes to re-emphasise its commitment to the rule of law and strict adherence to democratic ideals. However, any person or group, no matter how highly placed, that may wish to test the will of the present democratic dispensation, will definitely be checked through the legal provisions of the law.

A woman caught with 4.450 kilogramme of cocaine at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos has blamed her ill-health for her involvement in the illicit act.

Abdulrasaq Modinat Alake, a trader, is one of two women apprehended at the Lagos airport by officials of the anti-narcotic agency, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Some of the reasons adduced for their involvement in drug trafficking include ill-health and lack of support from their husband.
NDLEA in a statement yesterday said the two suspected female drug traffickers are currently assisting narcotic investigators with relevant facts relating to the exportation of 4.450kg of cocaine to India and 7kg of cannabis to China.

Modinat, 44 years old and indigene of Kwara State told investigators that she became involved in drug trafficking after she suffered an ailment that took away all her resources.

She said, “I was married but later separated. I am the only person taking care of myself.
