The US Department of Defense is working on the development of a blockchain-based, cybersecurity shield. This is a calculated effort to increase the nation’s digital protection.

According to a publication on July 12th under the title ‘Digital Modernization Strategy,’ the DoD is planning to expand on the digital front in cybersecurity. The document summarized integrating cloud and quantum computing, artificial intelligence, in addition to the use of distributed ledgers such as blockchain technology.

A section was reserved for what the DoD called its ‘Block Chain Cybersecurity Shield.’ The paper explained blockchain as a new information technology that “inverts” the cybersecurity paradigm by being trust-less and transparent. The DoD appears interested in the way distributed ledgers such as blockchain are resistant to attacks and tampering.

The report said:

“First, blockchain networks are trustless: they assume compromise of the network by both insiders and outsiders. Second, blockchains are transparently secure: they do not rely on failure-prone secrets, but rather on a cryptographic data structure that makes tampering both exceptionally difficult and immediately obvious.”

The report is of the view that blockchain networks are capable of reducing compromise while imposing greater adversary costs through the use of honest nodes that reject dishonest actions.

Bitpoint, a Japanese crypto exchange suspended all services after losing $32 million in a hack involving XRP, Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies.

In an official announcement on July 12th, Bitpoint revealed that it had lost around 3.5 billion yen (~$32 million) 2.5 billion yen (~$23 million) of which belonged to customers and 1 billion (~$9.2 million) to the exchange.
According to Bloomberg, shares of Bitpoint’s parent firm Remixpoint Inc. shed 19% following news of the incident.

Apart from XRP and Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies that had been stored in the affected hot wallets include Litecoin (LTC) and Ether (ETH).Bitpoint’s announcement indicates that the exchange’s cold wallets are not reportedly thought to have been compromised.

Bitpoint is on record as one of the multiple domestic crypto exchanges to have been served a business improvement order from Japan’s financial regulator, the Financial Service Agency (FSA).

Telecoms firm, Etisalat and the Dubai Land Department have signed a memorandum of understanding concerning real estate blockchain technology according to Gulf Today.

The Dubai Land Department works under the Executive Council of Dubai in real estate-related services, while Etisalat is a multinational, Emirati firm that serves 15 countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Both parties have said they aim to implement smart government standards and introduce paperless management and digital contracts for property transactions.

DLD’s director general, Sultan Butti Bin Mejren, said the agreement is part of an ambition to make Dubai “the smartest city in the world.”

According to Gulf Today, the MoU has the goal of improving registration and verification processes, speeding up transactions while keeping all parties involved safe.

Remember that a blockchain platform built by one of the United Arab Emirates’ two telecoms operators was officially endorsed by the government back in April.

A cryptocurrency market data provider, CryptoCompare, has recently partnered with derivatives exchange BitMEX to provide professional investors on the Refinitiv Eikon terminal with a real-time cryptocurrency futures dataset.

The partnership will see BitMEX’s dataset delivered to Refinitiv, one of the largest financial market data providers and will be ultimately integrated into Refinitiv’s Eikon terminal.BitMEX is a leading cryptocurrency futures trading platform. The platform achieved a new all-time high in trading volume earlier this year when it registered $10 billion in a single day.

Commenting on the new partnership, BitMEX’s CEO Arthur Hayes stated:

A Dutch billionaire, John de Mol, has recently sued Facebook over fraudulent bitcoin ads that showed him next to quotes about how much money he purportedly made investing in BTC with a company that was swindling users.

Reuters reported that De Mol’s lawyer has claimed the businessman, who created the reality show ‘Big Brother’ and is one of the brains behind the Endemol entertainment studio, is suing Facebook over damages to his client’s reputation, and over Facebook’s inability to stop the ads from appearing altogether.

De Mol’s lawyers wants Facebook to automatically block ads featuring him and cryptocurrencies. His lawyer further claimed consumers sent a total of €1.7 million (around $1.9 million) to the scammers, before Facebook reacted to complaints and removed the ads from its platform.

De Mol also wants to get the names of those behind the fraudulent bitcoin ads, so he can hand them over to authorities. Jacqueline Schapp, one of his lawyers, argued that Facebook’s system of reacting to users reporting problems isn’t good enough.

He said: "I don’t know what reality Facebook lives in, but that doesn’t work."

Facebook’s lawyer, Jens van den Brink, revealed the company couldn’t be forced to monitor every ad that goes through it all the time. He also said that it’s “technically impossible” to block ads with De Mol’s name on it, as he is not the only person with such a name.

Facebook will reportedly announce its cryptocurrency project this month and will allow employees to take part of their salary in the coin.

Citing a report by The Information, CNBC states that Facebook furthermore plans to cede control of the cryptocurrency to outside parties in order to ensure that the digital asset will not be completely centralized.

Third-party organizations will purportedly pay as much as $10 million dollars for the opportunity to act as a node to validate transactions on the network for Facebook’s native token.

The stablecoin which will purportedly be integrated as a payment tool on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram will also be accessible through physical ATM-like machines.

Facebook’s own cryptocurrency has been the subject of much speculation over the past several months, as the company has revealed little about the project. Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is in talks with Facebook about its upcoming stablecoin.

Rememeber that in May 2019, Facebook acquired the “Libra” trademark for the secretive project. Sources familiar with the subject claimed that Facebook was recruiting financial firms to develop the coin and that the project codename is Libra.

Facebook also registered a new financial tech firm, Libra Networks LLC, with the Geneva Commercial Register in Switzerland in May 2019.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced the filing of a lawsuit against Kik Interactive Inc. wherein it alleges the Canada-based company sold millions of dollars’ worth of unregistered securities as part of its $100 million initial coin offering (ICO).

The securities regulator says that Kitchener-based company sold the tokens to U.S. investors in 2017 without registering their offer and sale, or providing proper disclosure, as required by U.S. securities laws.

Steven Peikin, co-director of the SEC’s division of enforcement, stated thus while explaining the complaint in a press release:

"By selling $100 million in securities without registering the offers or sales, we allege that Kik deprived investors of information to which they were legally entitled, and prevented investors from making informed investment decisions. Companies do not face a binary choice between innovation and compliance with the federal securities laws."

Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Taotao is expected to go live at noon on May 30th, 2019 according to the company’s official Twitter page.The new trading platform is backed by Yahoo Japan, marking the local internet giant’s arrival into the field of crypto.

The timing comes now that the market just dropped the bear market tag.The Yahoo Japan-backed platform was first mentioned in March 2018, when local newspaper Nikkei Asian Review reported on the corporation’s plan to acquire 40% of BitARG, a Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange, and to subsequently launch its own full-fledged platform “in April 2019 or later.”It was reported that the purchase of BitARG shares would be made through Tokyo's YJFX, a retail foreign exchange broker wholly owned by Yahoo Japan, Nikkei revealed. Yahoo Japan, in turn, is a joint venture run by American internet company Yahoo and Japanese holding company SoftBank.

It is reportedly the largest internet provider and payment processor in the ‎country, which surpasses Google and PayPal in the respective fields.Initially, BitARG denied such a deal was taking place, but the acquisition was soon confirmed both by Yahoo Japan and BitARG. According to different reports, the 40% stake cost the internet corporation between 2 and 3 billion yen (around $19-27 million).

According to Nikkei, YJFX senior managers and engineers were sent to BitARG in April 2018 with the aim of reportedly developing the new exchange system and work “on a corporate governance structure, a customer management system and internal controls.” The new exchange was expected to be “newly built but based on BitARG's system,”Starting from March 2019, prospective users could sign up for a Taotao account and participate in a promotional giveaway scheme.

The platform had originally planned its debut in mid-May but then postponed the launch at the last minute.The exchange will be open for Japan-based clients only. It is unclear if it ever intends to expand to other countries.

Yang, 2020 Presidential Candidate Says Blockchain, Crypto Must Be Part Of US Future

Andrew Yang, American entrepreneur and Democratic 2020 presidential candidate has said that blockchain should be a big part of the United States’ future, Bloomberg reported on May 15.

Speaking at the Consensus conference in New York, Yang who is well known for his progressive pro-universal basic income stance stated:

“I believe that blockchain needs to be a big part of our future. If I’m in the White House, oh boy are we going to have some fun in terms of the crypto currency community.”

A challenger candidate who has recently revealed he crossed the Democratic National Committee’s threshold of 65,000 donors to participate in the first candidate debates, Yang is also the founder of Venture For America (VFA) — a non-profit accelerator for start-ups for emerging cities.

In April, he published a national framework for digital assets regulation as part of his presidential campaign.

Yang, in an interview with Bloomberg during the conference reportedly stated that he would base his consumer protection digital asset framework loosely upon existing securities laws. He said:

“We just need to provide rules of the road. We need to figure out which agency is going to be interacting with individual currencies. It would be unfortunate if every time a new currency comes out we then have to decide which framework applies.”
