EducationEstate Management Students Association (emsa), Oau, Inaugurate New President by donnn(op): 11:27pm On Jun 27, 2015
AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY OJEKUNLE, OLABISI SUNDAY THE PRESIDENT OF ESTATE MANAGEMENT STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (EMSA), OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY; ON THE OCCASION OF THE SWEARING- IN INTO OFFICE, THIS DAY, 26TH JUNE, 2015.

The Head of Department, Dr. Olatoye Ojo, EMSA Staff advisers Dr. O.I Adegoke and Dr. T.T Oladokun, All Lecturers Present, all other Executives, SRC Members, and the members of judicial council for the 2014/2015 Session, Fellow Estate Management Students of all Levels, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Leadership is about service, and elected offices serve as an opportunity for diligent representation of the mandates and wills of the electorates. Today, we are gathered here to witness the baton to serve being passed to yet another set of student leaders in our dear association.

‘Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to successes – Stephan A. Brennan.

How well this administration will perform depends on how willing and submissive we (the students’ body) can be in partnering with the Staffs of the Estate Management Department and the entirety of our students
It is primordial to every electioneering campaign to make convincing promises to the electorates. The peculiar case of our department was resoundedly made known in the course of campaign; every successive administration has achieved little success on the promises they had made. I will like to use this God-given opportunity to charge every elected officer here today, starting with myself; to actualize our manifestoes.

Much of my responsibilities as President will be coordination of the activities of EMSA while keeping faith with the rule of law as espoused in the constitution of the association.

The electioneering period witnessed certain divides in interests or alignments. Fellow classmates had to compete against each other in seeking the votes of you all (student). The Vice President 1 and P. R. O post was between two individuals who both possesses the capabilities to reposition EMSA. Even so, I want to state that in spite of the outcomes there is NO VICTOR, NO VANQUISHED.

The Creation of the Estate Management Students Representative Council (EMSRC) and the judicial council was necessitated to ensure the executives make periodical reports to the entire students’ populace and to check and curb the excesses of the executives. The Pioneering Members of the EMSRC and the judicial council seated here today will be standing in for these students, and they must not fall short in their responsibility to serve as oversight to the Executives.

To the wonderful set of executives I will be serving with in the course of the next 6-7 (six to seven) months, I believe our interests are aligned to the notion of Qualitative Service to the entirety of Estate Management Students, and I will ensure that it is our perpetual duty to follow these interests.
To every Estate Management Students I will be serving, I will work not to disappoint you.

God bless Estate Management Department,
God bless Obafemi Awolowo University
God bless Nigeria.
Thank you. From the office of the PRO, EMSA Oauife.

PoliticsBuhari, Atiku Presidential Bids Split APC by donnn(op): 6:27am On Sep 14, 2014
Already Atiku’s announcement has split members of the party.

It was learnt that the announcement by the Atiku Campaign Group was considered by other contenders as hasty. They argued that the party had yet to release guidelines for its presidential primary.

Besides Atiku, other presidential aspirants in the APC include a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

While Atiku’s supporters say he is the best candidate of the party, Buhari’s camp argue that Atiku cannot give President Goodluck Jonathan a good fight in 2015.

A former National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change and associate of the former head of state, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, dismissed insinuations that Buhari would dump the APC should he lose the ticket, he said the party’s presidential primary should not be a matter of money.

He said, “General Buhari is going nowhere; he is a loyal party man. Any talk about Buhari leaving the party is balderdash.”

Fashakin said while it was true that Buhari left the All Nigeria Peoples Party, the circumstances which led to that decision no longer existed.

He explained that Buhari had done a lot to stabilise the APC, noting that the support Buhari enjoyed in the North was non-transferable.

According to him, supporters are of the view that Buhari stands heads above shoulders over other contenders.

He said “The APC will be the ultimate loser should its mandate become the subject of horse trading or a matter or naira and kobo.

“The party would have scored an own goal. He remains the only living Nigerian right now who can give Jonathan and the PDP a run for their money. Any other candidate the party puts forwards can easily be overrun by Jonathan.”

Also speaking on the issue, a Buhari supporter within the party hierarchy who pleaded anonymity, said, “Others may have more money, but if you look at the manifesto of the party, it says one of our cardinal programmes is to fight corruption and instil national re-orientation. Between Buhari and the other candidate, who is in a better position to do this?”

However, the Atiku campaign group does not appear to be bothered by the interest generated by the opposition from Buhari’s camp. The Director of the Atiku Media Office, Garba Shehu, in a telephone interview said his principal’s quest for the APC ticket and ultimately Nigeria’s Presidency was hinged on his desire to serve.

According to him, Atiku’s reach and connection within and outside the country makes him the best person for the job.

He said all the former Vice-President was seeking to do was to give back to the Nigerian society which gave him enormous opportunities.

Shehu said the Atiku campaign group had taken a conscious decision not to attack any aspirant bidding for the ticket and would run only issue-based campaign.

He said “You are not going to see us attacking any aspirant, because if we attack any aspirant, we will weaken the party; his conduct will be one of civility, and respect for each contestant. We are hoping that this will be about ideas. We need more aspirants within the APC to put themselves forward for election and Nigerians will choose who they want.”

Shehu noted that the assumption about other aspirants who had yet to declare was not a problem because the Nigerian Constitution does not say the first person to aspire automatically gets the ticket.

Shehu said, “Today, Abubakar ranks higher than most state governments in terms of job creation as the businesses he is involved in has served more Nigerians both directly and indirectly in terms of employment than even the government.”

A high ranking member of the party who appears sympathetic to Atiku dismissed insinuations that the former Vice-President would be treated differently from other contenders because he was not a foundation member.

The member, who pleaded for anonymity because he did not want to be seen to be biased, told SUNDAY PUNCH, “The Constitution of our party does not discriminate against anybody,” he said.

It was learnt that supporters of Buhari were putting finishing touches to an internal campaign, which would be anchored on provisions of the party’s manifesto. The campaign would rely on the provisions of the 31-page party manifesto dealing with the issue.

Multiple party sources, confided in SUNDAY PUNCH, that the party hierarchy was already grappling with the daunting task of picking a flag bearer.

One of the sources said, “The leadership of the APC is aware that because of the early but illegal campaign, President Jonathan has locked down the South -South and the South- East.

“To counter this, we are looking for somebody who can lock down the North- West and the North-East.

“If things continue as they are today, the North-Central will be split between the APC and the PDP. If this happens, the South-West will then play the role of decider.”

Efforts to get comments of the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, on the impact of Atiku’s planned declaration on the party did not succeed, as he was said to have travelled to Dubai.

He had not responded to the email sent to him at the time of sending this report.

PoliticsINEC Distributes PVC In Oyo by donnn(op): 6:44am On Aug 12, 2014
The Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Nasir Ayilara, said the Independent National Electoral Commission would start the distribution of the Permanent Voter   Cards in the 4,783 polling units across the 33 council areas of the state on August 15.

During a meeting of the state Inter-Agency Committee on Voter Education and Publicity held in Ibadan on Monday, Ayilara said the exercise would last two days. He said the objective of the meeting was to create awareness for the exercise.

He said, “The INEC in Oyo State will be distributing Permanent Voter Cards from August15 to August17, 2014.

“INEC has made provision to register new voters who might have lost their cards. Those who register during the stipulated time will have the opportunity to collect their cards two months before the next general election in 2015.”

The registration of such category of voters will take place between August 23 and 25 while those who failed to get their PVC during the scheduled period will have the opportunity to do so on August 20 when a mass distribution of the PVC will take place.

The REC said the various exercises had commenced well ahead of the 2015 election in order to have enough time to address controversial cases and allow all eligible voters to exercise their franchise rights.

“INEC will provide adequate security for the exercises so that it will not be hijacked by hoodlums. The success recorded in Osun State election will be replicated all over the country during the next elections and subsequent ones. More enlightenment campaigns will be carried out before the election in 2015,” Ayilara said.

EducationScrap ASUU by donnn(op): 7:05am On Dec 11, 2013
ABAKALIKI- GOVERNOR Martin Elechi of
Ebonyi State yesterday called for the
disbandment of the Academic Staff Union
of Universities, ASUU in the country,
following its alleged antecedent of
sabotaging the effort of governments in the
area of education and provision of
infrastructural facilities to institution of
higher learning.
The governor made the call during an
interactive session with members and
executives of the state chapter of the
Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ.
He described ASUU’s action as a sabotage
of the education sector and the corporate
existence of country; stressing the need for
the union to always consider the future of
students while taking steps to contribute its
quota towards the improvement of the
education sector.
He said: “The major victims of this strike are
not government but the students and
things are not what they should be.
“ASUU is due for proscription; the way they
are going is sabotage to the existence of
the country. When I travelled I heard that
lecturers had resumed in EBSU; my plan
was that if any lecturer is to resume he or
she is to renounce their membership of the
union.
“At a point in time, history must change if
not we will keep drifting; in EBSU, it is still a
case of no work no pay.”
On Ebonyi indigenes who were disengaged
from Abia State civil service, the governor
noted that the state had no covenant with
the affected workers that they would be
reabsorbed into Ebonyi State civil service.
He noted that what was necessary was for
the state to ensure that their retirement
benefits were duly paid to them.
It should be recalled that over 80 Ebonyi
indigenes who were disengaged from Abia
State civil service had staged a peaceful
protest at Government House, Abakaliki,
and other relevant government agencies in
the state in 2010.
The indigenes, who were mostly from
Ebonyi South and North senatorial districts
of the state were seen carrying placards
with various inscriptions, such as ‘a
sojourner has a home’, ‘we have come
home for sense of belonging’, ‘Ebonyi state,
salt of the nation, we embrace you’, East or
West, North or South, Home is better’,
Governor T.A. Orji says no to two dual
citizenship, His Excellency, Ebonyi state
Governor, kindly receive your people’
moved around the vicinity, chatting songs
to reflect their state of despondency.
Spokesman of the group, Mr. Okoro
Chibuike Uduma, pointed out that the
reason they were disengaged was because
the governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore
Orji, wanted to implement the payment of
the N18, 000 minimum wage for only
indigenes of his state.
According to him, most of them were
disengaged from Abia State Local
Government Education Authority, local
government councils, among others
