PoliticsBREAKINGNEWS: Rivers Assembly Majority Leader, Chidi Lloyd, Arrested For Murder by donPhill(op): 9:21am On Jan 03, 2014
BREAKING NEWS: Rivers Assembly Majority
Leader, Chidi Lloyd, Arrested For Murder
The Rivers State Police Command said it had arrested the Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Chidi Lloyd, for the alleged murder of his kinsman, Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo and a police sergeant, Urang Obediah. A statement made on Thursday night indicated
that Lloyd was purportedly arrested on his way
to join the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi,
in his private jet in order to escape justice.
The statement sent via e-mail by the State Police
Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad,
specified that Lloyd knocked down Obediah
while pursuing Ejeuo, identified to be his
political opponent. Lloyd, who was still standing trial for his
involvement in the fracas that took place in the
State House on July 9, 2013, was said to have
rammed into Ejeuo’s Passat car with a
bulletproof vehicle and killed him (Ejeo).
The police command pointed out that it had
initially thought it was an auto accident until
Lloyd relocated to another hospital, “conscious
of what he did.” “The Rivers State Police Command has arrested
Hon. Chidi Llyod of the Rivers State House of
Assembly for murder of police Sgt. Urang
Obediah and Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo, his kinsman
and arch political opponent. “He was arrested on his way to join Governor
Amaechi Rotimi in his private jet at the Airforce
base to escape justice. “Hon. Chidi Lloyd on December 30, 2013 while
pursing his political opponent, knocked down
Sgt. Urang Obediah, in spite of his effort to stop
him, rammed and killed him and went ahead to
crush the Passat car of Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo was
driving and killed him. “Initially the Police thought that it was a mere
accident, which ought to have been a
manslaughter. The Commissioner of Police
directed ACP Aliyu Garba, the Area Commander
Metro, to visit him in his hospital bed and
commiserate with him, conscious of what he did, Chidi Lloyd relocated to another hospital. “Facts emerged that Chidi Lloyd drove a bullet-
proof vehicle while pursuing his political
opponent, late Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo, and he
(Lloyd) knocked down Sgt. Urang Obediah,
who died on the spot and (Lloyd) moved
ahead to smash a political opponent in his Passat car who equally died instantly,” the
statement reads. The statement added that late Ejeuo, who
hailed from the same place with Lloyd was
believed to be in the PDP camp led by Elder
Felix Obuah.
The statement also indicated that the Leader of
the House allegedly escaped from the hospital
where he was being guarded by four
policemen. However, a top government official told our
correspondent that the claim by the police that
Lloyd tried to join Amaechi in his (Amaechi)
private jet in order to escape justice was a
blatant lie. It will be recalled that Lloyd, who presented
himself to the Nigeria Police after a video clip
showed him hitting a member of the House of
Assembly, Mr. Michael Chinda, with a mace on
the head, was charged to court on a six-count
charge, including attempted murder. Lloyd was later granted bail in order to receive
medical attention after sustaining injury during
the July 9, 2013 free-for-all in the chambers of
the State House of Assembly.

PoliticsNasarawa Assembly Overrules Al-makura, Pass LG Law by donPhill(op): 9:09am On Dec 31, 2013
Nasarawa Assembly Overrules Al-Makura,
Passes LG Law •Assembly Acted Out Of
Ignorance, Says State Attorney General The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on
Monday overruled Gov .Umaru Al-Makura
when it passed into law the state Local
Government Amendment Bill 2013. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
the bill stipulates one-year tenure for elected
council chairmen and councillors At the plenary on
Monday, the lawmakers passed the bill into law
through a simple majority voice vote. After a prolonged debate over a letter sent to
the assembly by the Governor, explaining his
inability to sign the bill into law, the lawmakers
invoked the powers conferred on them by the
constitution to override the decision of the
governor to ensure passage of the bill into law. The action followed a motion by the Majority
Leader, Mr Godiya Akwashiki (PDP, Nasarawa-
Eggon West) on the issue. Akwashiki argued that since it had taken the
Governor more than three months to sign the
bill into law, far beyond the 30 days allowed by
the constitution, the assembly was left with no
option than to override the executive and to
pass the bill into law through two-thirds simple majority. Earlier in his submission, Umaru Tanko-Tunga
(APC, Awe North), cautioned both the
executive and legislative arms of government
against taking decisions capable of causing
more hardships to the people at the
grassroots. “The people at the grassroots are the meal
tickets of both the executive and legislature
and as such we should be careful not to
subject them to further hardships”, he said. Tanko-Tunga, who described the one-year
tenure passed by the assembly for elected
council officials “as not practical”, however,
disagreed with the executive for allowing the
Nasarawa State Independent Electoral
Commission (NASIEC) to commence preparations for the council elections even in
the absence of the requisite law. Through a voice vote, the Speaker, Alhaji
Ahmed Musa Mohammed, pronounced the
passage of the State Local Government
Amendment Bill into law. Commenting on the development, the state
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,
Mr Innocent Lagi, said the lawmakers acted out
of ignorance. “The assembly cannot overrule the executive
and pass a bill into law through a voice vote”,
he said. (NAN)

Nairaland GeneralNigeria To Expire By Midnight-groups by donPhill(op): 8:57am On Dec 31, 2013
Nigeria To Expire By Midnight – Groups Nigeria expires at 12 midnight, according to
some ethnic nationality groups inn the country. The groups believe the Amalgamation Treaty
of January 1, 1914, which joined Northern and
Southern protectorates created Nigeria with a
life span of 100 years. The ethnic nationalities, which included
Federation of Oodua People, Middle Belt
Congress, Lower Niger Congress and Oporoza
House, which congregated on the banner of
Movement for New Nigeria, MNN, said Nigeria
would become history after today and therefore urged all Nigerians to embrace the
national conference to agree on fresh terms of
co-existing. Speaking at a briefing held at Freedom Park,
Lagos attended by Elder Fred Agbeyegbe, Co-
coordinator; Tony Nnadi, Secretary-General;
Mrs Hilda Dokubo, Timi Kaiser Ogoriba, Chief
Dan Ekpebide, Abuka Onalo, Ambah Binaebi,
Shade Olukoya and Leye Akinmodiro, the groups urged President Goodluck Jonathan to
speed up the national dialogue, warning that it
would be disastrous to hold the 2015 elections
without a new constitution emerging from a
national conference. “The mention of 2015 in Nigeria’s political
discourse instantly evokes two ominous
conjectures. One is the haunt of the US
intelligence prediction that Nigeria will
disintegrate before 2015. “The other very bloody prospect swirls around
the 2015 electoral round in which a northern
politician assumes that there would be trouble
if the elections are rigged.” Nnadi said: “What the British did in the
amalgamation treaty was to consolidate all the
treaties that they signed with the different
ethnic nationalities they subdued in the
process of their conquest. “By 1914, the various treaties were
consolidated so as to be recognised in
international law. Under international law,
every treaty has a life span of 100 years. The
Amalgamation Treaty took effect on January 1,
1914, which means that it will expire on December 31, 2013. “The second challenge for Nigeria is that the
1999 Constitution, which General Abdulsalami
Abubakar gave to Nigeria made certain
proclamations that are rooted in falsehood
because it was not a constitution drawn up by
Nigerians. “What will hold Nigeria after December 31 is a
hope that the national conference will produce
another document that Nigerians would
accept.” Professor Akin Oyebode, a lawyer, however
disagrees with the groups, as he said Nigeria
will not expire because the amalgamation was
not put in place by a treaty, but by an order in
council by the British Parliament. According to him, the process of amalgamation
started in January 1900, when the British
Parliament issued an Order-in-Council through
which the Royal Nigeria Company, which
succeeded the United African Company, ceded
its power to the British Crown and resulted in the amalgamation of the Southern
protectorate. He said the British Parliament also issued an
Order-in-Council which resulted in the
amalgamation of Northern protectorate in
1906. The amalgamation of Northern and
Southern protectorates took place in 1914
through another Order-in-Council. He said the order was used in British territories,
which had no legislature to issue such
legislative instrument. He said it was through
the order that Nigeria got her independence in
1960. Professor Oyebode agreed with moves to
convene a national conference because the
1999 Constitution, which was foisted on
Nigerians by the military, shared the same
features and characteristics with the
Amalgamation Acts which were enacted without the participation and consent of
Nigerians. According to Oyebode, the 1999 Constitution is
nothing but Decree No. 24, which has since
been identified as a fraudulent document. Noting that the 1999 Constitution may be valid
but not legal, he said “what we should expect
is for the proposed national conference to lead
to a constitutional conference through which
Nigerians can produce a document that they
can respect.” Speaking in the same vein, legal icon, Professor
Itse Sagay (SAN), who argued that there was
no law that automatically gives a treaty of 100
years life span said: “I totally disagree with the
group that the 1914 amalgamation was by a
treaty. “It was a union imposed on us by the British
who were colonial overlords of Nigeria, then
recognised by international law, which was a
legitimate power to join the Northern and
Southern protectorates. “So, it was not a treaty at all. If it were a treaty,
both parties could have sat round the table to
negotiate their merger. But there wasn’t
anything like that at all. “The people just woke up one morning and
found out that they have been joined together
by the superior colonial force. “Meanwhile, contrary to their belief that a treaty
can expire, it can be forever and can be
terminated by either party. A party can
withdraw from a treaty at anytime, provided
certain conditions are met,” he said.
