The Peoples Democratic Party Staff Welfare Association has alleged that the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, worked against the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The aggrieved workers made this known in a statement by the chairman of their association, Ngozi Nze and secretary, Dan Ochu-Baiye in Abuja on Saturday.

According to the workers, Metuh worked against Jonathan because he lost the post of the Director of Publicity of the Presidential Campaign to Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode.

The statement read: “We have incontrovertible evidence that the man who is PDP Publicity Secretary worked assiduously against the presidential candidate of the PDP, former President Goodluck Jonathan in the last election in order to requite the ex-President for rejecting him as Director of Publicity of the Presidential Campaign which was given to Mr.Femi Fani-Kayode, a development which came after Metuh had squandered a whooping sum of N450m media fund earlier approved for the office of PDP Publicity Secretary by Jonathan.”

The association also described as an absolute bunkum, a clumsy, and blundering blackmail, an allegation by Metuh that the staff members were being sponsored by the ruling All Progressives Congress.


The workers said that such a weak shot from a “mortally crippled arsenal of witch-hunt is incapable of breaking the resolve of the staff to expose the thieving band in the NWC and restore the core vision of the party.”

“We are not surprised that the allegation will become the most fashionable means of covering tracks,” the statement said.

The angry workers are also asking the NWC members to account for the over N12bn which they said were squandered by them in just nine months.

According to them, “We therefore place on record that the majority of the establishment staff of the PDP are not just unrepentant members of the party who have spent over 16 years in service; who have assimilated the PDP ethos as a way of political life but are also the repository of the party’s institutional memory whose spirit can hardly succumb to the ephemerality of power loss.”

They alleged that in the January 2010 Anambra governorship election, Metuh as National Vice-Chairman, South-East abandoned Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the PDP candidate while openly galvanizing support for Hope Democratic Party candidate, who they described as his friend and benefactor.

“The PDP did not only woefully lose in Otolo Nnewi Ward 1 of the Party’s zonal Vice Chairman but came a distant third in his polling booth! What a faithful party officer!”

They asked Metuh to explain what he did with “the huge sum of N70m that he collected in July in the name of fighting the APC in the media.”

In his reaction, Metuh through his aide, Mr. Richard Ihediwa, said he was ready for probe, adding that those behind the statement chose to drift away from issues and narrowed on him.

He said such was not unexpected given the his role in “rebuilding his party and how uncomfortable the APC has been for his outspokenness.

“We are aware that the anti-PDP forces have easily found a handful of disgruntled PDP employees as willing tools to attack Metuh with a view to bringing him to public odium, distract him and deny our party a credible voice to propagate its positions.

“These forces had even gone to the extent of engineering some discontented PDP members to portray statements by the National Publicity Secretary as his personal opinions in the attempt to discredit and intimidate him.”

“We make bold to state that Metuh, being aware of the challenges that comes with his new role, has offered himself, his office as well as all his private companies for probe by the Department of State Service or any other government agency for that matter.”

President Muhammadu Buhari declared yesterday that with the formation of a stronger regional coalition, Nigeria and neighbouring countries now have an increased capacity to deal effectively with Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.

According to him, the full activation and deployment of the Multi National Joint Task Force which has been established under the auspices of the Lake Chad Basin Commission will lead to the speedy defeat and elimination of Boko Haram.

The president stated this at an audience with Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa.

Buhari said with the Command and Control Centre of the Nigerian military now in Maiduguri, Borno State, the morale of troops in the front-line states has improved significantly.

“You can tell the Secretary-General that we are doing our best and our best will be good enough for the nation and the sub-region”, the President told Chambas.

On the forthcoming elections in Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea and Burkina Faso, the President also called on the United Nations to assist African countries in the acquisition and use of innovative technologies to ensure more credible elections.

“When citizens recognize that their votes count, it will boost their confidence in democracy and their countries’ electoral systems,” he said.

Buhari recalled that in the last general elections in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) used smart card readers to authenticate prospective voters, even as he observed that while Nigeria could afford the use of such technology in its elections, other African countries may require support and assistance from the international community.

On his part, Ibn Chambas commended President Buhari for his strong and positive actions against terrorism, saying his successful visit to Cameroon this week and his reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of all border issues with Cameroon was a welcome development.



Orders Immediate Release Of N5bn For Victims, Says N33.54bn yet to be redeemed

Meanwhile President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday directed the Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Danladi Kifasi to facilitate the immediate release of the N5billion pledged by the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration since August 2014 for the Boko Haram Victims Support Fund (VSF).

The President gave the directive after the VSF presidential committee headed by Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.) briefed him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Danjuma had informed President Buhari that out of the N55.92billion pledged at the fund-raising dinner for the Fund in August last year, N33.54billion outstanding was yet to be redeemed, including N5billion from the federal government.

He explained that, while his committee currently has N23.33billion in four bank accounts, the committee had received approval from the immediate past administration to incorporate the fund into a trust fund in order to “insulate it from political interference”.

Accordingly, Danjuma requested the president to use his office to persuade all organizations and individuals to honour their pledges to the committee.

After ordering immediate payment of the N5billion pledged by the federal government, President Buhari also urged the committee to ensure proper coordination with other government agencies providing support and assistance to victims of terrorism.

The President assured Danjuma and members of the VSF committee that his administration was taking proactive steps to defeat terrorism in the country.

He said that despite the challenge of acquiring much needed strategic equipment and weapons to confront the terrorists, the Nigerian military has recently gained much ground in its effort to defeat and degrade Boko Haram.

Danjuma also told journalists after meeting with the president that they informed the president about what the committee had done and what it plans to do in the nearest future.

He said, “You know we were launched during the fund raising which took place a year ago. The total amount of money that was pledged by various contributors was slightly more than N50 billion. Of this amount, only N23 billion have so far been redeemed. So, there is a lot of money out there.

“Of the organisations and individuals, that have not fulfilled their pledges, the federal government is one. We are expecting N5 billion from the federal government and the President promised today that he would honour the pledge of the Federal Government”.

On what the committee was doing to recover the funds pledged by others, the former Defence minister threatened that the committee may resort to publicly naming those who have refused to pay with a view to shaming them.

He said, “We plead with them quietly but we may also resort to naming and shaming. We will continue to ask people who pledged to honour their pledges. You the press should assist us in raising the fund.

“N20 billion is a drop in the ocean compared with the needs of the victims and if really the war stops tomorrow, already those displaced are really looking for support to go back to their homes and this N20 billion is nothing”.



We Share Information On Boko Haram With Nigeria – US

The United States has said it is supporting the Federal Government in terms of intelligence sharing in the fight against Boko Haram.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, stated this on Friday in a Facebook question and answer session.

Entwistle pointed out that the US government under President Barack Obama was doing its best to help Nigeria win the war against terrorism.

The envoy added, “No partner is doing more to help you against Boko Haram than the United States. We hope to train more of your troops; we are glad to discuss weapons transfers and we engage in significant information sharing, which I cannot discuss in detail in this setting.

“We also are doing everything we can to support the population of internally displaced Nigerians from the north-east and to help Nigeria create conditions that will prevent something like the scourge of Boko Haram from ever happening again in Nigeria.

“The US has for years had a beneficial working relationship with the Nigerian military, especially in the counter-terrorism struggle against Boko Haram. Now more than ever, we are committed to assisting our Nigerian partners as appropriate. That involves training, sharing of information and, in some cases, helping the Nigerian military with its equipment needs.

“The Leahy amendment requires that for all countries, we cannot train known human rights abusers or that our equipment be used in depredations against civilian populations.”

Entwistle noted that paying attention to human rights would not distract from fighting terrorists.

He explained that on the contrary, it would make for a stronger counter-terrorism effort since it allowed the military to keep civilian populations on their side in the midst of the incredibly difficult task of fighting terrorists, who did not care about human rights or protecting civilians.

On Nigeria’s stolen money allegedly in US banks, the ambassador stated that the US government was ready to continue its efforts to “find funds that were ‘looted out of the country’ and may now be in the US bank accounts.”

He, however, urged Nigerians to exercise patience, saying the process of finding the looted funds was an “extremely complicated process which takes detailed investigation.”

According to Entwistle, the cases can sometimes take time in the US courts.

Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie is the Emeritus Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos. He was the founder of the soon to commence Augustine University, Ilara, Epe, Lagos State. In this interview with KENECHUKWU EZEONYEJIAKU during an inspection of the school to ascertain its level or preparedness for commencement of academic activities, the Cardinal bared his mind on the deteriorating standard of education in the country, a situation which he noted was what necessitated the establishment of the institution; to offer a holistic education.

You have a huge structure here. What is the rationale behind it?

WE’VE been thinking of helping the Federal Government in educating the citizens, especially the youths, and we discovered that there is a big lacuna in the kind of education that our youths are getting today. So, the Catholic church of the Archdiocese of Lagos felt it is something good to put an institution, a tertiary institution that will help train Nigerians and give them holistic education, proper one. Not the kind you find in other places.

What differentiates this institution from other private institutions, especially church owned institutions?

I have just told you that it is going to be holistic – every part; it is not just going to be academic. Probably, before you see really what we are doing, it will be about three or four years when the first group will go out, then you begin to see what the Catholic Church is doing. I cannot stand here immediately and tell you, this is what we are going to do. I don’t believe in that; I am not a politician; I want you to see things by yourself.
How much will the school charge? This is because there is this thing about church-owned institutions charging what is normally out of the reach of their members…

It is not only church-owned institutions. Anybody who wants to offer something good must be ready to spend money. If you want your child to go into a good school, you must be ready to spend money because it is an investment, life investment. If you want us to give you a rickety kind of education, we can do it so you can bring any Tom, Dick and Harry; then they get nothing.

Look at when we took over schools, take, for example, St. Gregory’s or St. Finbars’ College, there were more than 3,000 students in a school; we had to weed them out, even though some parents and students were not happy, but we had to do that because those were not the kind of pupils we want for our education. Now go there today and see.

So there must be that clear-cut difference. You talk of morality, you talk of spirituality and not only academics should be there. We want students that will come out from our institutions to make the mark; there must be that difference. For example, I am a priest; we are marked out among other people and that is seen in anything we do. We don’t have to ring our bells that ours is the best school. No! The schools speak for themselves.

What has it cost the Catholic Church to create this; and how are the programmes going to accommodate persons of other faith?

Coming to the money, I must tell you this: we have invested a lot of money in this place as you can see by yourselves, and we are still spending and we will continue to spend for the foreseeable future because it is a lifetime thing; it is not something you just do today and then you fold your arms or something you do for money, no.

I cannot tell you precisely how much we have spent here, but I know we have spent billions, I can tell you that authoritatively. I mean, look at the structures. Even when Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) delegates came here, they were surprised to see what is already on ground in comparison to what they have been seeing elsewhere. And that is the Catholic Church for you when they do something.

Whether it is going to be faith-based or not, I don’t think so, otherwise, we will be failing in our ministry. When Lord Jesus Christ came… any good evangelizer will not just say, ‘I’m only going to look after my people, I don’t care about the other people’. No, that is not that. God is the father of us all. He didn’t say “I am only for Christians, for Catholics, for Muslims…” No! He is the father of everybody. Any good faith-based institution must look at everybody.

Go to any of our schools, you find Muslims there, you find Christians of other denominations. We don’t differentiate. If we are doing something and you want to go, you are free. I remember when I was in charge of the primary school, St. Mary’s, Broad Street, Lagos Island, one Colonel in the Nigerian Army came and met me and said: “I don’t want my children anytime we want to eat, they start doing this (sign of the cross). What is that nonsense? They won’ eat without driving away flies.” I said, “sir, you know one thing I will ask you to do and it will be good for you and for your children, just take them out”. The man said “No! No! But I like the school.” I told him “then, that is it. Leave it, when they come out from the school and grow up, then they will take anything they want out of the school.” That’s all. We force nobody, no one.

I think that is fair enough not to force anybody, ‘you must be here, or you must be there’. No! That’s not education.

When is the school starting operation?

I think it is September. I don’t know, I am not quite sure, but they are preparing the ground for matriculation.
The former Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola recently canvassed that there should be ranking in terms of academic integrity in our nation’s universities. And he made this suggestion based on the corruption in the university system- incidents of cultism, inducement of lecturers financially for grades, sexual harassments. Are you worried in that regard?

I am greatly worried. And you cannot blame these children because this is the kind of society we leave for them. Didn’t you see what happened in the National Assembly? Fathers throwing chairs to their colleagues; what example are they setting for their children, even to students? And these are leaders and lawmakers of tomorrow. What are you going to say to that? This is where everything should begin.

The NUC should try to tailor things to the way that it is going to be beneficial to the nation. I blame them. What are they looking at? At least, they are in charge of the tertiary institutions I believe. What are they doing? Tomorrow, a lot of these boys that passed out of these rickety institutions will still enter the National Assembly.

Do you know how many lawyers we have today in the country? Innumerable. Why are they rushing there? Is there no other thing that they can do? And more and more are still going in for law; the same thing with economics. Everybody is rushing, rushing, for what? What are they looking for there? There are so many other courses… I don’t know. The Vice Chancellor and others will give you whatever you want about the academics of the institution; I don’t think I am competent enough for that.

His Eminence, there is this allegation about private institutions of late, what they do is to award First Class arbitrarily. Is this institution going to be different?

Before you land, I can promise you that it is definitely going to be different. Otherwise, I won’t be bothering my head thinking about giving the nation a university.

You know we have a College of Education in Akoka, Lagos State. Somebody just muted it at one of the school’s convocation ceremony. He said: “His Grace”, then, “why not turn this place to a university?” I said “what, this place?” He said, “of course, you can do it.” I said, “sir, I don’t think so. Look at this place, we are still trying to develop it and you are telling me about turning it into a university.” So that idea sank into me. I said, “Ok, God will do it”. That’s how we got it.

You see, I believe in one thing, that this heavenly father that we all look up to, He has a way of tailoring us the way he wants us to go. But unfortunately, we are so egoistically minded that we don’t just care; we want to do things our own way, ‘I have arrived, no one can control me.’

Look at our youths, look at the kind of names they call their fathers – ‘Old School’ and all sorts of names, and the parents will be looking at them, that it is not their fault. Rubbish! We are destroying these children and God will ask us: ‘You asked for children, I gave you, look at what you are returning to me’.

So, these are the kind of things that are happening.

His Eminence, it is an allegation too that Catholic institutions are known to be costly – Loyola Jesuit College and many others. Will the Augustine University expected to take-off by September, still be up there?


Before you land again, I had just answered the question earlier that ‘obe to donu owo lopa’. If you want to buy a good thing, a quality something, you just have to spend. Don’t forget that the lecturers have to be paid, the institutions have to be maintained; the students themselves, they want this they want that, you have to provide them. Where do you think I get the money from? You think I have a mint? I haven’t got a mint. You asked me earlier how much we have invested here, I told you that all I can tell you is that billions have gone into this place. You can see it by yourself and we haven’t started o! We haven’t started at all. It’s not easy.

Will there be provision for scholarship?

I don’t know. That depends on the Archbishop. I know we have a scholarship scheme going on, but whether the money in that account is buoyant enough for that, I don’t know.

President Muhammadu Buhari declared Saturday in Abuja that his administration will do all within its powers to ensure that no Nigerian child is ever infected with polio again.

Speaking at a brief event in the Presidential Villa to mark Nigeria’s successful completion of one year without any reported case of the wild polio virus, President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government will mobilize and deploy all necessary resources to efficiently complete the task of eradicating polio from the country.

“Today, 25th of July, 2015, Nigeria has successfully completed one year without any case reported of the wild polio virus.

“Achieving this feat has placed us firmly on the path to eradicating this paralyzing disease from our land.

“I seize this opportunity to call on Governors, our traditional and religious leaders, the private sector and our mothers and fathers to redouble their efforts to ensure that every child and every new born baby is vaccinated with the polio vaccine and other life saving routine vaccines,” President Buhari said.

The President personally vaccinated one of his grandchildren against polio at the occasion to demonstrate his commitment to eradicating the virus from Nigeria as well as the safety and efficacy of the polio vaccine.

President Buhari thanked all Nigerians and foreign partners who have support the country’s polio eradication programme in several ways.

He said that he looked forward to the formal declaration of Nigeria as a polio-free country in 2017.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed the reasons why he allowed himself to be arrested by the Abacha regime despite many opportunities to escape and accept an offer of political asylum by the United States.

Obasanjo was among the opposition lights that were against the regime of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who ordered their arrest, trials and sentences but spared their lives due to international pressure.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday told the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers that nobody would be treated as being above the law by the present administration.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, the Vice-President spoke while granting audience to the leadership of the union at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Osinbajo told his guests that ensuring that no one is above the law is the first rule of any developed country.

He said there was no reason why Nigeria also should not be well run like such countries.

He added, “Good economies are run by men, not spirits. Men and women like you and I, flesh and blood. There is no reason why our country cannot be well run. The key is the rule of law.

“We insist that the rule of the law be maintained, that no one is above the law. Nobody is above the law; it is the first rule. The President has committed himself to this. He said it yesterday again in the US, that nobody is above the law.

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said the surveillance helicopter purchased by his administration would soon be given the necessary assistance it requires by the Federal Government.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent by the media aide, to the governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, on Saturday, the governor said this when the Police Community Relations Committee paid him a courtesy visit.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Mr. Gboyega Famodun, had on June 22, accused the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan of frustrating the plan of the governor to put the chopper into use to assist security agencies in surveillance.

Famodun said the FG-controlled Nigerian Communications Commission refused to provide the special code for the helicopter to be linked with ground equipment provided by the state government for surveillance.

But Aregbesola said, “With the recent government at the centre, the helicopter we purchased for aerial surveillance will be in full operation with the issuance of the sort code needed for its operation.”

Aregbesola also called on the police committee to treat the issue of cultism with seriousness, noting that cultism must not be allowed to grow in the state.

He said, “I want all hands to be on the deck to make our state a no-go area for people with criminal intent. Despite our ranking as one of the least state with crime in the country, much still needs be done to get rid of the little criminals still hanging around the state.

“We are among one of the states with the purchase of high numbers of equipment, we have armoured personnel carrier that can convey 20 armed policemen with surveillance camera and other security gadgets mounted on it.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Abubakar Marafa, lauded Aregbesola for providing operational vehicles and other equipment for the police in the state.

The CP, who was represented by Mr. Tunde Showole, said with the numbers of vehicle and other equipment provided by the state government, the police does not have any excuse regarding operation vehicles.
