https://images.agoramedia.com/everydayhealth/gcms/Epilepsy-symptoms-722x406.jpg I don’t know if anyone has ever put up a post about epilepsy or people living with epilepsy before, here on Nairaland, but even if someone already has, it doesn’t matter because reading about this topic again is not a wasted effort. It would very much enlighten people that didn’t know anything about it before, and would also re-enlighten people who already have previous knowledge about it. Many times I’ve happened to be present in places where people who suffer from epilepsy start convulsing or having an epileptic seizure, but instead of people moving in close to help the person through their crisis, they move away from them, usually because of the fear of contracting it instead, and it just breaks my heart when they are treated this way because people with epilepsy are totally harmless. It is important that people know that epilepsy is not contagious at all. What usually scares most people away from helping people with epilepsy when they are having their seizures is mainly the white stuff that foams out of their mouth, however, it is important everyone knows that it is nothing to worry about at all. It is just ordinary foamed up saliva which is totally harmless. Many people are obviously still holding on to unnecessary fears and false beliefs about epilepsy in their minds, and I just felt I should do something to break them free from it by helping them really understand what epilepsy actually is, and also teach them how to help people with epilepsy and how to behave around them. Epilepsy is simply a chronic disorder that occurs as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke. It is usually treated by medication and in some cases by surgery, devices or dietary changes. https://youngheartsed.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/epilepsy-brain-waves.jpg?6e6354&6e6354 During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behavior, symptoms, and sensations, sometimes including loss of consciousness. There are few symptoms between seizures. Epilepsy is not contagious (you can't catch it from someone who has it). It's not inherited or passed down through families in the same way that blue eyes or brown hair are. But someone who has a close relative with epilepsy has a slightly higher risk for it than somebody with no family history of seizures. There are two types of epileptic seizures people with epilepsy may have and they include, 'tonic-clonic' or 'convulsive' seizures and 'focal seizures'. If you see someone having a tonic-clonic or focal closure, The next few paragraphs explain how you should help them or behave around them and also when you should call for an ambulance or seek for professional medical help. Tonic-clonic (convulsive) seizures Tonic-clonic seizures or “grand mal seizures” as they used to be called are the type of seizure most people recognize. Someone having a tonic-clonic seizure goes stiff, loses consciousness, falls to the floor and begins to jerk or convulse. Sometimes they may lose control of their bladder or bowels, and bite their tongue or the inside of their mouth. White people who experience it may go blue around the mouth due to irregular breathing. However, that might not be easily noticed when it comes to people of color. Things You Should Do These are things you should do or how to help if you see someone having a tonic-clonic seizure. You should... • Protect them from injury (remove harmful objects from nearby) • Cushion their head • Look for an epilepsy identity card or identity jewelry – it may give you information about their seizures and what to do • Time how long the jerking lasts • Aid breathing by gently placing them in the recovery position once the jerking has stopped (see the picture below) • Stay with them until they are fully recovered • Be calmly reassuring https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/sites/epilepsy/files/info/images/recovery-position.png Things You Should Not Do: These are things you SHOULD NOT do if you see someone having a tonic-clonic seizure. You should not... • Restrain their movements • Put anything in their mouth • Try to move them unless they are in danger • Give them anything to eat or drink until they are fully recovered • Attempt to bring them around Call for an Ambulance or Seek For Help If: • You know it is their first seizure or • The jerking continues for more than five minutes or • They have one tonic-clonic seizure after another without regaining consciousness between seizures or • They are injured during the seizure or • You believe they need urgent medical attention Focal seizures You may also hear this type of seizure called a partial seizure. Someone having a focal seizure may not be aware of their surroundings or what they are doing. They may have unusual movements and behavior such as plucking at their clothes, smacking their lips, swallowing repeatedly or wandering around. Things You Should Do: These are things you should do or how to help if you see someone having a tonic-clonic seizure. You should... • Guide them away from danger (such as roads or open water) • Stay with them until recovery is complete • Be calmly reassuring • Explain anything that they may have missed Things You Should Not Do: These are things you SHOULD NOT do if you see someone having a tonic-clonic seizure. You should not... • Restrain them • Act in a way that could frighten them, such as making abrupt movements or shouting at them • Assume they are aware of what is happening, or what has happened • Give them anything to eat or drink until they are fully recovered • Attempt to bring them around Call for an Ambulance or Seek For Help If: • You know it is their first seizure or • The seizure continues for more than five minutes or • They are injured during the seizure or • You believe they need urgent medical attention *Medical facts about epilepsy and epileptic seizures in this article were culled from articles here and here.
