t is know fact that the ruling political party in Lagos state has always been in opposition party from second republic. Since 1979, opposition party has always been the one controlling Lagos state even when the federal capital was in Lagos. Jakande won the election in Lagos state as a governor under the platform of UPN while Shagari won at the federal level under NPN. In 1983 , some of the states in south west like Oyo and Ondo were taken over by NPN which was the party at the federal level. But they couldn’t succeed in Lagos. Olunoloyo and Omoboriowo won in Oyo and Ondo state respectively under NPN before the democratic rule was truncated by the military. Between 1991 and 1992, Social Democratic Party (SDP) was more popular in South west than National Republican Convention (NRC). Dapo Sarumi and Femi Agbalajobi were the main contender for governorship ticket under SDP in Lagos state. At the end of the day, both Sarumi and Professor Femi Agbalajobi, were disqualified from further contesting, not because they did anything bad but because it was a No-Retreat, No-Surrender scenario. Yomi Edu was presented by the party, but he was defeated by NRC candidate, Micheal Otedola. Which was the only NRC governor in South-West. The MKO Abiola won the election under SDP which was annulled by IBB. Since 1999 till date, People Democratic Party (PDP) has been ruling at the federal level. Alliance for democracy (AD) won all the states in south west including Lagos in 1999. During 2003 election, all the states in south-West were lost to PDP except Lagos. In 2007 and 2011 elections , opposition party ACN won the election in Lagos. Another election is fast approaching, many people have been clamouring for change of power at both federal and state level in Lagos. if the history will still repeat itself, there are two options. 1 PDP retaining the power at Federal level and APC retaining power at the state level in Lagos. 2 Power change at both federal and Lagos state level. Which one will you prefer. |
