Career › Re: Is Remote Job Hunting Becoming Too Exhausting? by DrAda(f): 5:56am On May 12*. Modified: 8:37am On May 12 |
GANTUX: I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
For years, one thing I’ve noticed is that finding good opportunities often takes far more time than it should.
You open multiple platforms.
You scroll through pages of listings.
You filter through roles that don’t fit.
You open tabs, close tabs, save some, ignore some, then repeat the whole process again the next day.
Sometimes after spending all that time, you still feel like you haven’t found anything truly worth applying for.
And sometimes the really good opportunities move fast.
By the time you see them, hundreds of people are already there.
Personally, I don’t think the biggest problem is lack of opportunities.
I think a big part of the problem is the amount of noise, manual searching, and how much time it takes to find something relevant.
That can become mentally draining, especially for freelancers and remote professionals who are already trying to balance work, clients, learning, and life.
I’ve been thinking deeply about this because it’s something I’ve dealt with personally for years.
Curious — what part of remote job hunting drains you the most?
Is it the endless searching, low-quality listings, too much competition, or simply finding the right opportunities too late? It can really be a struggle. Whenever I am rejected and that happens quite a lot, I always send an email thanking them and wishing them well while saying to myself that they have lost an incredible staff to work with. This keeps my morale up. I also do my research to see where I am falling short compared to my peers in the global space and I try my very best to fill that gap. With perosnalized AI, applying for these jobs usually take a few minutes so that's not really a hassle. Recently, a senior colleague who got a remote job confided in me that she applied to hundreds of job positions before she succeeded. I remember her story anytime I am rejected so I never stop applying. Do not despair, all it takes is a single opportunity and your story changes forever so keep at it. |

Akalia: I don't like you women for this admission. Even my own wife could be playing along because of benefits the whole time. Geez!!! You had asked and I answered honestly. Why are you then getting annoyed? Also, benefits may mean different things to different women. For some, it could mean financial gains and for others, a high emotional intelligence, kindness and gentility, etc Saying that you don't like us because of my feedback kinda puts you in a certain box in terms of personality which means that you need to work harder at the alternative which is being a good provider or any other thing that makes your wife tick. It's just the way it is And please I speak only for myself and would like to plead that you do not extend my opinions to your wife's perceived actions or emotional status. We are all wired differently. |

Foreign Affairs › Re: Nigerian Doctor To Pay $1m Fine For Cutting Down Trees by DrAda(f): 6:46am On May 09 |
adenigga: Oakland’s City Council has voted that a Nigerian medical doctor, Matthew Bernard, and his wife will pay a fine of nearly $1m for felling 38 legally protected trees on and around their Claremont Avenue property in the United States.
A California-based media platform, KQED, reported that more than 20 residents at a public hearing on Tuesday demanded enforcement of Oakland’s tree protection laws.
They argued that the leafy canopies of the trees in the area were important for wildfire prevention, public health and environmental equity.
Diaspora Tales reported last month that Bernard and his partner, Lynn Warner, said they removed trees from their property on an arborist’s advice.
At the hearing on Tuesday, the Nigerian medical expert told the council that the trees removed from his property nearly four years ago were “dead, dying, leaning,” or in “hazardous condition.”
The city, however, disagreed and fined Bernard and Warner $915,135.40 and placed a claim on their property that would prevent them from developing or selling the land until the fine was paid.
Defending the fine, a community tree specialist, Erys Gagnez, said, “Trees of that size are not commercially available for replacement. Even with replanting, it will take decades, even centuries, to restore the ecological and protective functions that were lost. The scale of the fine reflects this reality.”
