No fewer than five firefighters with the Lagos State Fire Service were injured in the Ajegunle and Surulere areas of Lagos State.

While an unnamed senior official had his ear cut with a broken bottle, another had a bottle smashed on his head, while three others were reportedly manhandled.

A fire truck was said to have also been damaged in the melee.



It was learnt that some hoodlums, who wanted to loot property in some buildings gutted by fire in the areas, resorted to attacking the firefighters to eliminate oppositions on their way.

A statement on Thursday by the Lagos State Fire Service said the officials ran for dear life to forestall a confrontation that could lead to total breakdown of law and order.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said such was the lot of firefighters in the state while striving to save lives and property.

He said the five injured officers were responding to emergencies when they were attacked, adding that such would no longer be allowed.

He said, “The state has observed with dismay the frequent attacks on its officials and obstruction of same from carrying out their official duties by hoodlums.

“Over five officers were seriously injured on Idewu Street, Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle and Odunsi Street, Itire-Surulere. The officers were dedicated and hardworking, and their motive was to save lives and property.

“The gallant officers responded to distress calls and were about to carry out their statutory duties when the hoodlums, who wanted to avail themselves of the opportunity to loot and steal from fire victims, saw them as obstacle and started attacking, stabbing and chasing them from the scenes of the fire incidents.

“A senior officer’s ear was stabbed with a broken bottle. A bottle was smashed on another’s head, while others were manhandled. In order to prevent a confrontation and breakdown of law and order, the officials retreated and ran for their lives.”

He commended the Divisional Police Officer at Itire for intervening and rescuing the officers from further assault.

Fadipe appealed to members of the public to desist from attacking firefighters and damaging government facilities, saying culprits should be ready to face the full wrath of the law.

Youths exhuming the bodies…on Tuesday

IT was too bizarre to be hidden for too long; the story of the three decomposing corpses and a human skull exhumed from a building in the Ugwuaji area of Enugu State on Tuesday. Yesterday, the Tricycle Riders’ Association (TRA), popularly known as ‘Keke Riders’, identified the three victims in the suspected ritual killing as their members.

This was as the Police in Enugu said yesterday that it had intensified efforts to identify and arrest the owner of the said building, where the three bodies were exhumed.

Speaking when he led the executive members of the association on a condolence visit to the Enugu Central Mosque at Asata Enugu, chairman of the union, Ikah Benjamin Ejiofor, described the gruesome murder of the keke riders as “most wicked and despicable”.

He gave names of the victims as Babangida Sule, Ashahabu Dauda and Ismahil Abdulahi.

It would be re-called that three dead bodies were on Monday exhumed from the foundation of a building project, located at the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

Ejiofor, who was moved to tears, described the killing as most barbaric and against the principles of life.

According to him, “Our members are rendering very important service to the society and it is so bad that the same people we are serving will turn back to treat us this way.

“We are grieved so much over this colossal loss and that is why we are here to commiserate with the Hausa community in Enugu. We are, indeed, in this tragedy together; we are so much pained,” he said.

Giving insight into the incident, Ejiofor said the Keke riders left their different units on Saturday but never returned, adding that “a search party was later organized and that is the result of what we saw on Monday.

“At this moment, our plea to security agents is that this evil should not go unpunished; no stone should be left unturned in a bid to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book. We cannot categorically say whether they were killed for ritual or not, because even their tricycles have not been found. So, we are leaving that aspect for security agents.”

He advised keke riders to henceforth stop picking people or dropping passengers at isolated areas.

In his remark, one of the leaders of the Hausa community in Enugu, A.A. Sambo, described the death of their brothers as most shocking.

“We lack words with which to describe this situation. It is so sad that vibrant young men left home in the morning in search for daily bread but never returned alive; it so sad that they were hacked to death in such manner,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, one of those who participated in the search further disclosed that apart from the fresh bodies of the three keke riders, there were about five other human skeletons.

“We even saw some female bags at the scene, which suggests that some women must have also fallen victims,” he disclosed.

Police Public Relations Office in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, said the command would do all at their disposal to unmask the owner of the building, stressing that already investigations have been intensified to unravel the cause of the murder.

There is outrage in Enugu State following the discovery, Monday evening, dead bodies buried in shallow graves along the Enugu Port-Harcourt Express Road.

According to DAILY POST, the incident, which occurred at the Ugwuaji Area of the State has kept residents in tears. It was gathered that human parts and fresh dead bodies were discovered at an uncompleted building, inside a bush along the Express Way.

A source hinted that curious villagers raised the alarm, which prompted security agencies to invade the location. In the meantime, villagers are pointing accusing fingers on a new church located close to the scene.
One of those who were at the scene described the act as “wicked and the most inhuman action I have seen in my entire life.”

“I was traveling when I saw the crowd there and had to stop. This is wickedness of the highest order. Accusing fingers are being pointed at a particular new church along that road; I don’t know who did this; but I must say that the wicked will never go unpunished.

“People no longer value human lives; for whatever purpose this was done, it is heart breaking”, he lamented.

However, the police is yet to make official statement on the matter.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, says there is a deliberate plot by some individuals to rub his name in the mud through fictitious reports in various blogs and the social media.

He said the smear campaign was tagged, ‘Destroy the reputation of Tinubu and his relationship with Buhari’.

Tinubu said this in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Sunday Dare, on Tuesday.

He said most of those behind the act were aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party that had failed to recover from the defeat in the 2015 election.

Tinubu alleged that some of them were being probed for corruption and had decided to push him into the controversy to whip up public sympathy.

He said, “The individuals behind the plot are mostly scared PDP elements made frightened by the Buhari anti-corruption campaign. They direct this falsehood at Tinubu in the futile mission of trying to drive a wedge between the President and Tinubu to disrupt the progress being made against corruption and to destabilise the APC.

“But their PDP is already something by-gone, buried under the mass of its corruption and wrongdoing. They fight for a cause that has no cause. They are mercenaries of all the ills and defects that the people want excised from our body politic. Thus, we must do the people a public service.”

The former governor of Lagos State said he never granted any interview regarding President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to run for re-election in 2019.

He also denied reports that he partook in the $2.1bn arms scam.

Tinubu said he had a list of the blogs that were carrying the false news and would soon expose their sponsors.

He said, “In the last six weeks, the Tinubu Media Office has monitored the stream of false, distorted media accounts written against Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We have learned that there is a concerted, wilful campaign tagged, ‘Destroy the reputation of Tinubu and his relationship with Buhari.’

“As part of this ugly plot to cultivate the worst of lies against the national leader of the APC, several blogs and online sites recruited to launch this smear campaign have manufactured stories to advance this sinister plan to taint the public mind with gross lies disguised as news reports and interviews.

“Fallacious headlines such as ‘Reasons why I collected N9m-Tinubu’ and ‘I will not return N9m-Tinubu”. “I am afraid PDP will stop Buhari in 2019 – Tinubu,’ are being paraded. Try as hard as they can the creators of these false tales and misleading headlines will fail miserably.

“Their stories cannot stand up to the slightest scrutiny. They are patently false and we condemn in the strongest terms those involved in this anti-Tinubu racket.”

Tinubu said such a smear campaign was nothing but libel and would not be taken likely.

The APC leader said some of them had even gone as far as cloning the letter head of his media office, warning that those behind the campaign would soon be brought to justice.

He added, “While these fellows may think themselves cunning, they might have outwitted their very selves. In writing these stories, they have committed clear libel. In abusing the media office letterhead and name, their misrepresentations amount to forgery.

“They laugh now but walk on thin ice. Soon, that ice will break and they shall have nothing but the weight of their wrongdoing to blame for their predicament that will soon come.

“After identifying the bloggers and paid hatchet writers perpetrating these wrongs, the Tinubu Media Office is taking the step to alert the public to beware and be weary of hatchet writers, false prophets and paid bloggers. The Tinubu Media Office has the names and online sites recruited for this campaign and will not hesitate to make them know if they do not desist from their negative mission.”
