REGISTRAR and Chief Executive of National Examinations Council, (NECO) Professor Promise Okpala has said that the Council has no power to stop any strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) even with the negative effect the last Industrial action had on the conduct of its SSCE Examinations nationwide. Professor Okpala who was addressing Journalists during the official release of this year’s June/July School Certificate Examinations in Minna yesterday said despite the initial set back, the Council was still able to release results of the exams 63days from the last paper. According to him, “This is in line with our concerted effort to enable candidates access admission into institutions of higher learning without having to lose a year.” The Registrar disclosed that a total of 1,168,535 candidates registered for the examination out of which 1,166,118 actually sat for the examination. A breakdown of the results shows that a total of 859,998 candidates were able to score five credits in the various papers. Professor Okpala disclosed that when compared with the previous results, there was a “remarkable improvement” in the results of candidate in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, English, Economics, Chemistry and Government. He said for example in Mathematics, candidates recorded 73.0% credit this year as against 57.7% last year, Physic, 77.9% this year as against 53.3% Chemistry, 76.9% as against 53.4% and English 79.7% as against 53.9% last year. The Registrar disclosed that 381,361 out of the total number that registered were absent from the examinations while 88,884 results are also pending for various degrees of irregularities but promised that the results of those cleared will be release as soon as they are properly screened. Fifty two blind candidates sat for this year’s examination as against 33 for last year NECO HAS FINALLY RELEASED 2010 NOV/DEC GCE RESULTS, CALL ME FOR CELEBRATION, |
