Shun Social Vices, Magu Charges Youths

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has emphasized the need for Nigerian Youths, especially students to shun all forms of social vices.

Magu gave the charge on July 31, 2019, while speaking at an event organised by the National Orientation Agency at the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, on the theme: “Social Vices In Tertiary Institutions: Case Study of Cyber Crimes and other Related Offences”.

The EFCC Chairman who was represented by Olamide Sadiq, Head, Advance Fee Fraud Unit of the Commission, Ilorin Zonal Office, urged the students to be mindful of people they associate with.

He said: “When we are talking of social vices in Tertiary Institutions, it involves so many things.

“Youths of today are the leaders of tomorrow, you are becoming elders gradually, so you must keep away from evil things such as internet fraud, drug abuse, and cultism among others.

“There are so many things we do with our mobile phones, which our laws frown at, the main causes of social vices is peer group, some people perpetrated internet fraud and other fraud related offences and went away with it, but you might not be lucky, that is why am here this afternoon to advise you on how to do the right thing at the right time.

“Since we started our operations here in Ilorin, the Commission has secured over 20 convictions, majority of them are students, you must not do something that could jeopardise your future.”

Sadiq further told the gathering to be cautious of people they associate with.

He said: “Sometimes this year, based on intelligence reports, we arrested some internet fraudsters in Agric Estate, Ilorin, they were arrested alongside their girlfriends. I can see potentials among you, I see governors among you, I see ministers, commissioners, lawyers among others,” he said.

The Kwara State Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi declared the programme opened. .

FG to install CCTVs along highways, monitor bushes using drones - BUHARI

President Buhari has said his administration will install closed-circuit television, (CCTVs), on highways and other strategic locations, to help curtail and expose crimes. .

Responding to an address by the traditional rulers led by the Ooni of Ife , Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi during a courtesy visit to the State House, the President said: “Working with the state governments we intend to beef up the equipping of the police force with advanced technology and equipment that can facilitate the work of the security agencies.” .

The President disclosed that he “will be issuing directives to the appropriate federal authorities to speedily approve licensing for States requesting the use of drones to monitor forests and other criminal hideouts.”

He added that, “We also intend to install CCTVs on highways and other strategic locations so that activities in some of those hidden places can be exposed, more effectively monitored and open to actionable review.” .

He spoke further: “This administration will continue to do everything necessary to protect the lives of all Nigerians and ensure that every Nigerian in every state is safe, and that our people can live in peace and harmony, regardless of ethnicity, religion or region. .

As a government, we remain committed to the ideals of our democracy, particularly entrenching the rule of law and the sanctity of life.

Laspotech student owing tuition, commits suicide after being ridiculed

Bamidele Damilare, a Business Administration student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, has died after drinking a poisonous substance.

It was gathered that he went into depression after one Mr. Pears, their course coordinator, insulted and abused him over his inability to pay his tuition. .

His colleagues protested over his death, today, however, they were rebuffed by Mr Pears, who said Damilare’s death was none of his business. Security operatives were later called in to harass the students.

Turkish bee on death row, declare wanted after escaping in U.K

A rare bee – the osmia avosetta species – that arrived in the UK from Turkey in someone’s luggage, has escaped after sentenced to death and it’s now wanted.

The bee, which poses a very serious threat to the UK bee population, had been due to be destroyed by Defra, but it has now vanished. .

It had built cocoons out of flower petals in the conservatory of the Toy family when they returned from Dalaman. The cocoons that it built are due to be taken away today and destroyed by the The Animal and Plant Health Agency. .

British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) says the bee could have a ‘devastating effect’ on British bees and endanger them by spreading deadly viruses, or multiply and eventually out compete British bees..

An APHA spokesperson said: ‘We remain vigilant, working closely with the National Bee Unit and their nationwide network of bee inspectors to monitor the situation.’

Veteran Nollywood actress, Kemi Afolabi, was Thursday rushed to a hospital in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, after falling ill due to the stress associated with hajj exercise, Iszzyblog reports.

It was gathered that Afolabi had been showing symptoms of illness while in Madinah. She was seen sleeping in the bus during Ziyara (visitation to historical sites). .

While Afolabi joined the other pilgrims to some of the sites, at other sites, she sat in the bus. It was learnt that the eight hour drive from Madinah to Makkah last Tuesday took a toll on her.

Dr Abideen Aro, a medical practitioner attached to the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board (LSMPWB), Afolabi had symptoms such as fever, headache, loss of appetite and weakness.

He said: “We have warned the pilgrims before leaving Nigeria to use anti-malarial drugs as prophylaxis. But unfortunately, in her case, she didn’t use the drug due to oversight.”

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari says the corporation has no secret accounts that breach the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

Group Managing Director, Mele Kyar Kyari disclosed this when he received the Chairman and members of the Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Public Property in Abuja on Monday,

In a statement issued by Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the spokesman for the corporation, he said that the NNPC had nothing to hide as it stood to gain a lot by being transparent in all areas of its operation. He reiterated that NNPC had no secret account, adding “there is no single account NNPC is operating that is unknown to the Federal Government. ” Any account(s) outside the TSA platform are partner accounts which we have obtained due approvals from the government,’’ he noted. Kyari, who observed that all monies belonging to the corporation were domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), added that the Corporation’s account managers remained the CBN and the Accountant-General of the Federation.

On the lease renewal fees on Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 67, 68, and 70 by ExxonMobil, Kyari said the company paid 600 million dollars which were their equity contribution of 40 per cent of the Joint Venture Agreement. According to him, NNPC is to pay the remaining 60 per cent but it unnecessary as it is representing the government.

“Ordinarily, NNPC would have contributed the balance of 60 per cent of the amount which literally meant government paying monies to itself. There was no need for that,” Kyari said. Shedding more light on the alleged non-remittances of taxes and royalties by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), NNPC’s upstream arm, the GMD said there were outstanding payments which arose as a result of the pillage that occurred before 2015. He, however, assured the Panel that the present administration had made concerted efforts to reconcile every payment due to the Federation on taxes and royalties.

“The only outstanding payment is the 600 million and we have a pre-payment plan with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) such that by mid-2020, we will have money left to be paid,” he noted. On alleged non-remittances by some oil companies operating in the country, Kyari said it was the responsibility of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and DPR to collect taxes and royalties from oil companies, including those on Joint Venture (JV) and Production Sharing Contract (PSC) arrangement. He further noted that the NNPC would provide the necessary support to the agencies concerned in that regard though it had no legal obligation to do so.

“As an enabler organisation, we will support them because we see our roles beyond our immediate responsibility,” he said. While affirming the Corporation’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Kyari said the Corporation was one of the most accountable public institutions in the country, ‘’This is the only company that publishes its operations and financial reports monthly. I am not aware of any company that does that in the world.

“Every member of our Management shares the vision of Mr President that Government’s institutions must be accountable to all Nigerians. “We know that we will gain more by being more transparent. We have nothing to hide,” Kyari told the Panel. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Presidential Panel, Chief Okoi Obono- Obla said their visit was to seek synergy with the NNPC toward reforming the country and particularly to clear the air on issues relating to the operations of the Corporation.

He expressed the Panel’s satisfaction with NNPC’s “frank and honest responses on the issues raised, describing the Corporation as a very important and transparent national institution with a GMD who had a track record of accountability and transparency in his public career.

“The GMD has a reputation for being an apostle of accountability and transparency. I feel very happy that somebody like him is coming out to clarify the key issues. Nigerians have been misled, it behoves on every organisation to tell Nigerians the truth to engender transparency in the entire polity,” he said.

We Have no Link with DataPro Ltd, Unaware of its North-west Seminar-EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has noted with dismay, a publication from an organization that identifies itself as DataPro Limited, wherein it purports to have collaboration with the Commission’s Special Control Unit against Money Laundering, SCUML, and wishes to inform the general public that no such collaboration exists with the said company.

We also strongly state that it is entirely the figment of the imagination of those behind the company, which claims to be “Nigeria’s Premier AML/CFT (Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Terrorist Financing) compliance academy,” to imply that the EFCC is involved in the organization of what it touts as “nationwide awareness training programme” on money laundering and terrorist financing, and “sensitization of all reporting institutions for the 2nd round” of a mutual evaluation of the country in this year’s last quarter, involving Designated Non-Financial Institutions, DNFIs; themed: “Closing the AML/CFT Compliance Gaps among DNFIs in Nigeria”. We are unaware of this programme, let alone being part of its organisation.


The EFCC frowns at this attempt by the DatatPro to peddle influence and name-dropping, including that of its senior officer for the seminar.

The Commission in no unclear terms disassociates itself from the event, said to be for the six states of the North-west, slated for Tuesday 6 and Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Grand Ibro Hotel, Sokoto.
