Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, did not fly the same presidential aircraft with him to their Otuoke country home to participate in Saturday’s state Houses of Assembly election in Bayelsa State. Jonathan disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists after casting his ballot at 1.50pm at polling unit 039, Ward 13 in Ogbia Constituency 3. Curiously, only his mother, Eunice, accompanied him to Otuoke for the election on Saturday. The First Lady has not also visited her husband’s home state since he lost in the March 28 presidential election to APC’s Muhammadu Buhari. She was, however, reported to have landed at Okrika, her community in River State, days preceding the governorship and state Houses Assembly elections. Jonathan, who was responding to a question on why Patience was not with him at Otuoke on Saturday, unlike the case on March 28, said he and his wife flew different aircraft from Abuja. He quickly added that Patience was being expected in Otuoke to undergo accreditation and also cast her vote. “We used different aircrafts. She was supposed to be here. And we’ve been expecting her and we hope she will still come. “The only problem is whether she will meet up with the accreditation period. But, she is supposed to be on her way”, Jonathan explained. The President, however, expressed delight that Nigeria was consolidating on her democratic efforts. He said it was imperative for the citizens to avail themselves of their civic processes as elections were conducted every four years. “But, I’m quite happy I have done my own civic duty and I expect all of you (journalists) to do the same”, he said. Jonathan stressed that only House of Assembly election was being conducted in Bayelsa and that had accounted for the low voter turn-out in most of the polling units across the state. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/04/came-polling-centre-without-wife-jonathan/ |
Some youths in Isale-Eko area of Lagos Island, on Saturday threatened to burn down the palace of Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, if the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwumi Ambode, loses the governorship election. Some of the youths who gathered outside the Iga Idungaran palace of the monarch said the statement credited to Oba Akiolu where he threatened Igbos in the state with death if they voted against Ambode may have swayed votes in favour of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jimi Agbaje. One of the youths, named Wasiu, said the only saving grace for Oba Akiolu is for Ambode to emerge victorious at the end of the exercise. According to him, there are lots of Igbo traders in Lagos Island who are APC loyalists, but many of them have vowed to vote for Agbaje after the monarch’s threat. Shouting at the top of his voice, Wasiu said: “We are waiting for the outcome of the result to determine our next line of action. We have laboured for Ambode all this while, even some of my friends have died when PDP supporters attacked us. But now Akiolu wanted to rubbish everything we have done. “Some of our Igbo friends who are APC supporters have said they will vote against the APC even if it will cost them their lives. We will burn down this palace if Ambode loses and nothing will stop us,” he said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/04/ambode-youths-threaten-raze-akiolus-palace/ |
Governor Rochas Okorocha has said that if defeated in Saturday’s governorship election in Imo State, he will congratulate whoever emerges the winner. He stated this while speaking with journalists after casting his vote at Ogboko Ward 2 in Ideato South Local Government Area of the state. “I will congratulate whoever wins the election. Why not? But, first, let us do things properly,” Okorocha said. The governor, who claimed that the card reader failed to capture his fingerprints during the accreditation process, commended the state branch of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the smooth conduct of the election. He said, “So far, the election has been quite peaceful, especially in Ogboko Ward 2 where I voted. As we would expect, this is a violence-free area in the history of Imo State politics. There has never been any record of violence here. But this cannot be said about places that are notorious for election violence, such as Mbutu in Aboh-Mbaise LGA. “I have heard about political thugs hired by some politicians to cause mayhem in some polling units. The same thing is going on at places like Ohaji-Egbema, Oguta, Ezinihite and Ngo-Okpala, to mention a few. We must condemn election violence in all ramifications.” The governor called for a judicial panel to look into the causes of election crises in some parts of the state. He also commended the security agencies for their role in the elections. “I learnt that some people in fake military and police uniforms, as well as a man found with AK47 rifles, were arrested by security men. If such arrests had happened during the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, things would have been much better.” http://www.punchng.com/news/i-will-congratulate-winner-if-i-lose-okorocha/ |
