The Nigeria Customs Service has confirmed an incident in Katsina State where its operatives were forced to give bags of seized rice to armed bandits in order to save their lives during an operation.
Speaking in late 2025, the Katsina State Controller of Customs, Aliyu Muhammad, disclosed that the operatives encountered heavily armed bandits while transporting a consignment of seized rice. According to him, the officers were outnumbered and outgunned, prompting them to hand over seven bags of rice from the 37 bags seized to de-escalate the confrontation.
Muhammad explained that the decision was taken purely as a survival measure, stressing that the officers faced imminent danger and lacked immediate reinforcement.
