Understand trends in the job market

There will always be certain career paths that are growing and more in-demand than others. You must understand these trends. If you are unsure of what skill to obtain, think about pursuing a career in an in-demand sector. In today’s world, education, IT, and marketing are some of the most stable, in-demand career fields.

A report by McKinsey, drawing on survey data from nine countries, found that less than half of employers (43 per cent) were able to find the skills they needed in entry-level workers.

With the job market in Nigeria already beginning to take a hit amidst an impending threat of a recession, the country’s unemployment rate, (which at an all-time high of 33 per cent) is bound to exacerbate further.

With just 5 per cent of workforce formally skilled and 70 per cent of the 35 million youth who enter the workforce each year not “job ready”, despite the gains from educational attainment and a wide range of initiatives by the government and the private sector.

One reason for the sluggish uptake of young people for entry-level jobs in India is the distinct mismatch between the current skills and the skills required for newer jobs.
In order to keep pace with the fast evolving labour market, we need to address this gap which obviously is not happening with the present skill training curriculum — at least not at the pace that the labour market demand, he said.

This study also highlighted youngsters today are aware of the need to be tech savvy, and therefore digital literacy was a high priority topic for most aspirants.

1. Healthcare

The health sector helped the U.S. recover from the 2008 financial crisis. The sector added 2.8 million jobs between 2006 and 2016, which was nearly seven times faster than the overall economy. During the ten years since 2008, the sector has grown jobs 20%, while the average rate for the economy was only 3%.1

The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects healthcare jobs to grow at an annualized rate of 18% from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the rate of the rest of the economy.2

Healthcare Management, a guide to healthcare degrees for prospective students, says there are four reasons for the booming healthcare sector. First, an increasingly aging population is creating a need for additional services. Second, chronic conditions suffered by the aging population are increasing the demand for healthcare workers.

Third, medical advances and improvements are expanding the type and number of jobs available. And finally, federal healthcare insurance reform has increased the number of people seeking routine medical care.

As a share of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), health spending accounted for 17.7% in 2018.3 Additionally, investor interest in healthcare and biotech stocks continues.

2. Technology (digital Skills)

The tech sector is a huge component of the U.S. economy, according to Cyberstates 2019, an annual analysis of the nation’s industry published by CompTIA.4 Employment in computer and IT is projected to grow 11% from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations.5

Demand for additional workers is stemming from cloud computing—the collection, and storage of big data and information security.6

The impact of the tech industry has affected nearly every state, and, according to Cyberstates 2019, the industry is ranked in the top five economic contributors in 23 states and in the top 10 of 28 states.7

Technology plays a role in almost all other sectors, such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, transportation, education, and energy. The Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous vehicles, and augmented and virtual reality are all changing society and industries.

3. Construction (machinery Operators)

Construction has been a growth industry in all areas. This includes residential and nonresidential builders, contractors, and civil engineers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction and extraction occupations are projected to grow by 4% from 2019 to 2029, which is nearly as fast as the average for all occupations.

The growth is, in part, being driven by population growth, which is increasing demand for new buildings, roads, and other structures.8

Construction spending hit an annual rate of $1.365 trillion during 2019, according to data from the Census Bureau.

With a landmass bigger than India, China, the US and Europe combined, few doubt the scale of the African continent and its resources. However, until recently, only some have seen it as the growth market that it is fast becoming.

Africa has grown its economy by five per cent annually over the last decade. With its population steadily growing towards two billion, the continent is projected to have the largest workforce by 2040. Also, with a collective GDP of $2.6 trillion by 2020 and $1.4 trillion of consumer spending, many see the impact of around 500m new middle-class consumers.

After witnessing its worst recession in half a century in 2020, Africa’s economy is forecast to grow at a healthy pace of 3.8 per cent in 2021, driven by rising global demand as restrictions are eased, untapped market opportunities, a rebound in commodity prices and a rise in oil prices.

While Africa’s vastness and diversity allow for entrepreneurship to flourish across communities, it also poses challenges to creating universal solutions for issues such as poverty and food security, because each country has its unique capacity for innovation. For instance, while Ethiopia, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya ranked in the top 10 fastest growing economies worldwide in 2020, the continent still holds some of the poorest nations in the world.

African economies are not the same in design. We have the oil exporters: Nigeria, Angola, Libya and Algeria; and the more diversified economies found in Egypt, South Africa and Morocco. Then there are countries transitioning from agricultural to manufacturing and service economies, such as Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, and Cameroon.

In a bid to diversify away from resources, several nations have been pushing hard to grow other sectors of the economy. For example, while Nigeria remains very much an oil-exporting economy, its service sector now accounts for 60 per cent of its GDP. Its film industry, Nollywood, was valued at $3.6 billion in 2016 and is projected to be worth $6.4 billion by 2021.

In Angola, Africa’s second-largest oil exporter, fishing, agriculture and manufacturing growth now means that a third of government revenue comes from non-oil sources. After the success of m-Pesa mobile payments in Kenya in 2007, many African states have become world leaders in fintech adaptation.

In addition to government support, Africa is attracting global investors due to its vast resource base and untapped market options. Recently the UK pledged to invest $4.5bn in Africa by 2022, which is expected to create jobs and accelerate economic activities.

When we probed into whether Nigeria needs a stronger naira, we mentioned that GDP per capita is a more effective way to measure an economy. Based on steady growth in GDP per capita over the last decade, here are the top five most prospective African countries to watch.

Mauritius
Aided by an extremely favourable tax regime, the GDP per Capita in Mauritius is equivalent to 72 per cent of the world’s average. The financial sector remains one of the main drivers of Mauritius’ economy – notably through cross-border investment activities and banking services. Between 2011 and 2020, Mauritius improved its GDP per capita consistently from $8123.6 to $10,644. Mauritius is such a politically and socially stable economy that it is ranked 21st among the most peaceful countries in the world. Also, the country recently signed a trade agreement with China, making its transportation and financial sectors even more prospective.

Morocco
In 2011, the North African country’s GDP per capita stood at $2948.84. Since then, it has witnessed constant growth in its GDP per capita, save for 2020. Morocco’s GDP per capita is expected to reach $3,240 by the end of 2021. According to Trading Economics, it is projected to trend around $3350 in 2022.

Morocco’s economy benefits largely from political stability. In less than a decade, Morocco rose from 114th to 53rd on the ease of doing business rankings. Global Data expects Morocco to be the fastest-growing major economy in Africa.

Rwanda
Since 2000, Rwanda’s economy has grown at an impressive average of six per cent year over year. The East African country is reaping from the efforts it has made to improve its operating environment. Rwanda ranks second in the world for ease of property registration, behind only New Zealand. Rwanda’s GDP per capita maintained an upward trend from $630.93 in 2011 to $834.39 in 2020. Trading Economics expects Rwanda to become wealthier than ever next year, with its GDP per capita around $870 in 2022 and $890 in 2023.

Kenya
Kenya is one of the leading tech hubs in Africa. Nicknamed the Silicon Savannah, Kenya’s economy has been on an upward trajectory in recent years, growing between five to six per cent. According to the World Bank, it is one of the world’s top performers in Starting a Business and Getting Credit.

Kenya moved steadily from a GDP per capita of $1,202.12 in 2011 to $1,513.44 in 2019. Despite the economic downturn of 2020, it stood at $1,475. The East African country’s GDP per capita is projected to reach $1550 in 2022 and $1600 in 2023.

Cote D’Ivoire
Regarded as Francophone West Africa’s economic hub, Ivory Coast is the world’s largest exporter of cocoa beans. Despite a dramatic economic decline in 2020, GDP per capita stayed slightly below the previous year’s record high. Between 2011 to 2020, its gross GDP per capita steadily ascended to $2,310 from $1,526. Analysts expect Ivory Coast’s GDP per capita to reach 2330.00 USD by the end of 2021. They also project $2360 in 2022 and $2400 in 2023.

The University of Ottawa has announced special scholarships for students from Nigeria and other African countries willing to study courses in engineering, sciences, and social sciences faculties. The institution explained that the scholarships under the ‘Entrance and Excellence Scholarship for African Students Studying in English’ would provide incoming students with a four-year scholarship to cover the partial cost of their university’s tuition. This was contained in an update on the institution’s website titled,’ Scholarships for African students studying in English’. The institution listed courses the gesture would cover to include Civil Engineering; Chemical Engineering under engineering faculty. While Social sciences courses include Sociology; Anthropology; International Development and Globalization; Conflict Studies; Public Administration.

The update read, “The University of Ottawa is proud of the diversity of its international student body. This renewable scholarship is offered to international students who are citizens of African countries, who are admitted in the Fall 2022 term (September start date) or later with an admission average of 80% or higher, who are studying in English, and who enroll in one of the specified undergraduate programs in the faculties of Engineering, Science, or Social Sciences.

''This significant financial contribution to their education reduces their tuition fees by $17,500 to $25,000 for the excellence scholarships and by $12,000 to $20,000 for the entrance scholarships, depending on the program annually. “All students who are eligible for this scholarship will automatically receive it upon enrolment. It will be applied directly to their tuition fees.

“The Entrance scholarship cannot be combined with the Excellence Scholarship for African Students Studying in English.”
