Students of all public and
private primary as well as
secondary schools
throughout the country
are to remain at home
until February 4 in order
to allow school premises
to be used for the voters
registration exercise
starting later this month,
the Federal Government
announced yesterday.
Schools are supposed to
resume for the second
term of the 2010/2011
academic session this
week and next week.
But in a public notice
published yesterday,
signed by G.Y. Bello on
behalf of Education
Minister Professor
Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai,
the Federal Ministry of
Education said it was
postponing the
resumption date for all the
schools because the
Independent National
Electoral Commission
[INEC] would be using
public school premises as
registration area centres.
The notice said “as part of
preparations for the
voters registration
exercise, INEC has planned
to use public institutions
(primary and secondary
schools) as registration
area centres nationwide.
“In consideration of the
need to have successful
and hitch free registration
of voters for the conduct
of 2011 elections, the
Honourable Minister of
Education has approved
the extension of the
resumption date for all
public and private schools
for the term 2010/2011
academic session to 4th
February, 2011, except for
SS III students who are
preparing for their final
examination.”
The voters registration is
part of the processes
leading to the general
elections scheduled for
April.
However, President of the
Nigeria Union of Teachers
[NUT] Michael Aloba
Olukoya disagreed with
the government’s move,
saying, “Children in the
public schools are at the
receiving end. I am not
comfortable with such
unnecessary delays. It is
not good at all because it
is at the expense of public
schools because they are
always made to bear the
brunt for such policies.
Government should look
inward and ensure there
is no recurrence of such
issues. As a professional, I
didn ’t think it is all that
good. They are making
use of NYSC members
and not teachers; I think
the schools can still go
ahead. The postponement
is uncalled for because
there is no way it will not
affect the academic
process at the end of the
day.”
He said, “Sincerely, too
much of holidays for
public schools for a cause
other than their own is
becoming too
worrisome.”

So evry1 shuld be in d schul on 9th and join d early mornin queue cos am sure u must av heard d hardness of reg in our schul and as for d fees dere ar stil negotiatin.
